Yep. The problem is that you need umpteen iterations for the installation and you'll end up changing the FAI setup, installing, waiting half an hour, testing, doesn't work, change FAI, repeat. Or you'll fix it up by hand and forget to tell FAI of your manual changes to your next iteration will stop at the same position. And yes, I have experience with that. Currently I am working on a FAI setup for a lab of 10 Linux workstations which used to be manually maintained which just eats too much time... I patched FAI to do on-line updates, i.e. system updates without reinstallation. See http://www.physik.fu-berlin.de/~glaweh/pfai for details. In the near future, these patches will be merged into mainstream FAI, so 'softupdate' support will be available there. Thus, you can shorten your modify-test cycles quite a lot. the only things not handled by softupdate are (re-)partitioning (doesn't make much sense) and automatic software _removal_ when its not selected to be installed (I will work on this when the merge is complete). -- c u henning -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I can see how FAI is great if you need to punch out a huge load of identical machines; but to update the scripts after installation such that they would produce identical machines to the ones already running, would a) require a testing environment which we do not have (or cannot provide), and b) would take a lot of time that, I think, the admins do not have. I'm doing this since 2-3 years now with a massively patched version of FAI, which supports 'softupdates': everything except partitioning is changable at runtime within the normal FAI infrastructure. Change your FAI configuration, send an update-request to the client, and afterwards it will look similar as a newly installed machine. The update takes place on-line, so _if_ there are no major errors in your FAI-configuration, there even won't be any noticable downtime. Automatic testing of Debian packages
Hi I am writing this email as I think there could be done more to automatically test Debian packages. This would improve quality, as discovering errors is the first step in correcting them. I am not a Debian maintainer, but have been using Debian for 4+ years. As I am not an insider, I am likely to overlook some relevant information and I would be happy if people will correct me. I have looked at the Debian homepage to investigate what kind of auto-testing are performed. I found the auto-builder network (http://www.nl.debian.org/devel/buildd/), Lintian (http://packages.debian.org/unstable/devel/lintian) and Pbuilder (http://www.netfort.gr.jp/~dancer/software/pbuilder-doc/pbuilder-doc.html). The above mentioned software seems to test whether packages will compile or not. Furthermore, the software testes if packages comply by Debian policy. However, I would think that more could be done. It would be nice if packages were automatically tested under different setups, like language settings or other things that may affect a package. Also each package maintainer could supply a script which should test if the package ran properly. This script could then be run automatically on different architectures and setups (langauge settings and different settings for packages which the tested package depends upon). Do there exist, any other kind of automatic tests that I have not mentioned here? Anything else I have missed? Which errors are typical for Debian packages? This is important as certain kinds of error will properly newer be caught automatically. Any other comments would also be appreciated. Mads Lindstrm __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Ideally the program would be run from cron about once a week and email a status report. Is there a program already in existence that can do the check? Re: Automatic testing of Debian packages
[Mads Lindstrøm] Do there exist, any other kind of automatic tests that I have not mentioned here? More automatic testing would be good. Some packages run self-tests as part of the build process. More packages should do that. A long time ago, I wrote a prototype for testing package upgrades. It install a package in a woody chroot, edited source.list to point to sarge, and then run 'apt-get upgrade' in the chroot to see how that goes. All packages with no configuration changes are expected to upgrade nicely. Not all packages do. My prototype script is available from URL:http://developer.skolelinux.no/~pere/upgrade-testing/. I never found time to get any further. It would be nice if all packages in the archive was tested to check if upgrades will work as expected. (Of course, a more advanced test would modify the config files and see if the changes survived the upgrade, but that is left as an exercise for the reader. :) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Bug#303725: specter: FTBFS (amd64/gcc-4.0): syntax error before '{' token
Verdan writes: Hello With the attached patch 'specter' can be compiled on amd64 using gcc-4.0. It's not so easy. It was done that way to allow specter compile on gcc 2.95. This patch makes it impossible, so I hesitate to apply it. Moreover fourth version of gcc is really experimental, and if I had to choose specter compiling on 4 or 2.95 version I would choose 2.95. no, please don't. the gcc-4.0.0 release is announced for April. It's kept out of unstable due to the sarge freeze. you should not consider it experimental. For telling truth I don't know what to do now; upstream doesn't aprove this patch and won't include it in 1.4pre2 version of specter. I consider setting ,,wontfix'' tag. What do You think about that ? You can ask for the compiler version used and apply a patch or set a macro. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: Right of a maintainer not to respect FHS
Scribit Steve Langasek dies 04/04/2005 hora 00:42: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=300765msg=14 He has the approval of the release team. I didn't notice this mail in the time I was discussing with the maintainer. And it lacks explanation. When I read it recently, I thought it was some sort of error in an automated process. And I told the maintainer I thought he had no right to do a downgrade, and he never informed me that he had this approval: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=300765msg=30 : I insist: you do not have the right, Feel free to bring it up with tech committee. Downgrading a bug that is a clear violation of the policy just to have a package in the next stable release IS abusing the BTS. I'll try to make this really clear: The maintainer is primarily responsible for the severity levels of the bugs in their package. Basically, the only exception[1] to this are the RMs, who may decide that a bug needs to be above or below the RC threshold.[2] Considering the fact that the RMs have weighed in on this matter and have also decided that it is inappropriate for this bug to be RC, as well as the maintainer, you're fresh out of ways to legitimately change the severity of the bug. Just to restate what I said again: If you're changing the severity levels of a bug in a battle with the maintainer, even if your assesment of the severity is correct, all you're doing is abusing the BTS. Don Armstrong 1: Obviously, new information can change the severity of a bug, but if the maintainer changes it, it should stay that way. 2: But even they don't get to override the maintainer's decision if a bug is S, G, or C, or W, M, N, or I. -- Do not handicap your children by making their lives easy. -- Robert Heinlein _Time Enough For Love_ p251 http://www.donarmstrong.com http://rzlab.ucr.edu signature.asc Description: Digital signature
