GCC 4.0 as the default GCC / C++ ABI change

2005-07-05 Thread Matthias Klose
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

With today's dinstall run, new gcc/g++ packages are entering the
archives and GCC 4.0 is the default gcc/g++. Starting from now, please
DON'T upload any C++ code, which build-depends on a library written in
C++ that is not yet converted to the new C++ ABI. Details for the C++
ABI change are at the end of the message. How do we go on?

- - The buildd admins make sure, that build-essential (= 11), gcc (=
  4:4.0) and g++ (= 4:4.0) are installed on the buildds.

- - Package maintainers must update all their build environments to
  gcc (= 4:4.0) and g++ (= 4:4.0).

Each of the three following points can be done in parallel:

- - Rebuild C++ applications, which do not depend on any other C++
  library besides libstdc++.

- - Rename and rebuild C++ libraries, which do not depend on any
  other C++ library besides libstdc++. See below for the details.

- - All other applications and libraries have to wait, until the C++
  related build dependencies are available for the new ABI. It's
  important to adjust the build dependencies and the dependencies of
  the -dev packages to the first version of a package, which is built
  for the new ABI. See below for the details.

For the time until all C++ libraries are converted, we use the
following NMU policy for uploads related to the C++ ABI change:

- - 0-day NMU's allowed for all C++ library packages, which are uploaded
  after the g++ default change, and are completely ignoring the C++
  ABI change.

- - 2-day NMU's allowed for all C++ library packages, which are uploaded
  after the g++ default change, with serious bugs in the packaging
  (i.e. wrong package name in shlibs file, missing conflicts/replaces,
  library package without a library, etc).

- - 5-day NMU for all C++ library packages, which can be converted, but
  are left alone.

i.e. if libfoo1++ depends on libbar1++, libfoo1++ can be NMU'ed 5 days
after libbar1++ is uploaded.

Besides the C++ ABI change, all m68k and hppa packages depending on
libgcc1 have to be rebuilt to use libgcc2.

Have fun

Matthias

PS: Some of you know, that Ubuntu did the C++ ABI change at the start
of it's release cycle. For most if the libraries, patches are
available. These have to be adjusted, at least for the version
numbers. These patches may be outdated, some think they are too simple,
and it doesn't make sense to submit those to the Debian BTS. All
others may have a look at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/CxxLibraryList

C++ ABI Transition
==

Debian already had a C++ transition in 2002. Still remember? We are
proposing the same schema for the forthcoming ABI transition. The
following text is derived from this plan.

- - Why do we need one?

  Because GCC 3.4/4.0 changed the C++ ABI. You can't mix a C++ library
  compiled with GCC 3.4/4.0 and a C++ application compiled with an
  earlier version, or vice versa.

  Transitions are painful. This will be no exception. The rules here
  are designed to make it as smooth as possible, but it's still going
  to be unpleasant. We have to do it, we can't stay with GCC 3.3 for
  ever.

  Other distributions did already switch to 3.4 or 4.0, and most of
  our ports will have much better toolchains with the newer compiler.

- - How is it called?

  The C++ ABI has many names (no, actually only two). G++ 3.2/3.3 have
  the Version 1, 3.4/4.0 have the version 2. To get the ABI version:

g++ -E -dM -  /dev/null | awk '/GXX_ABI/ {print $3}'

  Compilers with ABI version 1 print '102', those with version 2 print
  1002. During the last C++ ABI transition package names were renamed
  from libfoo to libfooc102. So rename them to libfooc1002 this time?

  No,
  - if your package is called libfoo1, add the string ''c2'' to the
package name (see below).
  - if your package is called libfoo1c102, then replace c102 with c2
or drop the ''c102'' from the package name (see below).

- - So what're we going to do?

  We're going to rebuild all C++ packages with the gcc-3.4/4.0 ABI.

  * If you have workarounds to build with a specific gcc version on
certain architectures, these should be removed. Also if there are
specific optimization settings that have been used to workaround
compiler bugs, these should be removed, if possible.

  * Please don't add build dependencies on g++ (= 4.0) or
build-essential (= 11).

  * There will be a Lex KDE (i.e. don't rename library packages depending
on kdelibs4 / kdelibs4c2, the KDE maintainer should followup on this.

  * Add a build dependency on c++abi2-dev for all source packages, which
build using g++, but which binaries do not depend on libstdc++.
I.e. packages like festival.

  * If you maintain a library written in C++

* Wait until all of your dependencies have been uploaded in c2
  versions, and rebuilt on all architectures (check the
  update_excuses file).

In 32 KB ci potrebbe
stare un capitolo di libro. A parte la risposta di Filippo

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-italian/2005/07/msg6.html

default messaggi in solo testo.

Grazie per la lettura, e scusa se sembriamo secchi ma queste sono liste
dove ci si vuole capire al volo senza scrivere troppo.

 I beg to disagree here. As long as an appropriate priority is used
 (here, probably low) and the requirements mentioned by Petter are met
 too, I don't see why using debconf for its purpose would harm,
 actually.

Policy 3.10.1 says Package maintainer scripts may prompt the user if
necessary. Is it necessary to ask this question when there is a
sensible default?

I thought policy said something stronger than that, but I seem to be
wrong. Best practice used to be to ask questions only when there was no
sensible default whatsoever. Not to ask everything possible just because
you can.

Indeed, but IMHO low questions are just a waste of packaging work and,
moreover, waste the time of translators who do not see the priority
from the templates.

There is a reason that packages generally don't ask for user-related
configurations (ever seen vim: do you want to enable syntax
highlightning by default?). It does make sense on complicated server
packages which should run out of the box, but changing the user
interface of a graphical editor is neither complicated, nor is it
necessary to make the package work.

1. It's linking with openssl, and claiming to be LGPL, which

PTS keyword for [EMAIL PROTECTED] messages

2005-07-05 Thread Jeroen van Wolffelaar
Hi,

Since the move of the BTS from master to spohr, the PTS keyword for
control@ bugs messages accidently changed from 'bts-control' to 'bts'.

Since nobody complained (afaik) for nearly 1.5 years, I guess this
feature wasn't really used anyway, and I propose dropping it. People's
bts keyword will be set to bts || bts-control, and bts-control will
stop being a valid tag.

It is wrong, because upstream can decide at some point in the future
that the ABI is stable, and then start to call it libssh.so.0 or
libssh.so.1. It is much safer to use libtool' -release flag, so that it
is called libssh-$VERSION.so.0. To achieve that, just use something like
this in Makefile.am:

UP_VERSION=$(something that returns 0.11, the current version)
libssh_la_LDFLAGS = -release $(UP_VERSION)

Hi!

 At least some of them are of woody-proposed-updates, which got dropped
 from the database, and hence from pool. Indeed, the corresponding
 Packages.gz files on the mirrors didn't get dropped yet, which is a
 minor bug.

 woody-proposed-updates got dropped because there is no more point
 release of woody, so the proposed-updates of it simply are no longer
 relevant.

I see. Thus, I simply have to wait until woody-proposed-updates is
removed from the ./dists/ tree as well.

 Any files missing from other Packages files than these? If so, please
 list the Packages file that has a broken reference to a certain .deb.

See the attached file with a grep for all file names complaint as
missing with their according Packages file. Most of them indeed are from
woody-proposed-updates, but the first few are from sarge.

From the look of it, your packaging looks wrong.
You're probably creating a package that ignores SONAME versioning.

   I'm not exactly sure to completely understand what you meant, since I'm
   only a beginner, but I tried to correct it. Could you please check it

  I have two comments:

  1. It's linking with openssl, and claiming to be LGPL, which
I understand to be incompatible.

 I assume that linking with libcrypto.so and not libssl.so does not
 change the problem?
 I'll talk to upstream about that, and see if he could add an exception
 for linking with openssl, as said in the openssl faq.

  2. I think the upstream either doesn't care or much understand
shared library versioning; it's a nascent shared library which
will undergo several revisions of ABI/API changes.
I would consider calling its SONAME 'libssh.so.0' to be
something prone to failure.

 What I don't understand is that objdump -p /usr/lib/libssh.so.0 | grep
 SONAME returns 'libssh.so.0'. Doesn't this mean its SONAME is
 'libssh.so.0'? If it does, where is the problem?

I misread you. Forget what I said.

 I set the shared library version to 0.0.0 since it's the first debian
 package release.
 I was planning to version next release 1.0.0, since interfaces will be
 removed and since it will break backward compatibility, independantly
 of the version number upstream will give to his release. Is this wrong?

  I'll talk to upstream about that, and see if he could add an exception

 There is no need for an exception for LGPL software.

  What I don't understand is that objdump -p /usr/lib/libssh.so.0 | grep
  SONAME returns 'libssh.so.0'. Doesn't this mean its SONAME is

  I set the shared library version to 0.0.0 since it's the first debian
  package release.
  I was planning to version next release 1.0.0, since interfaces will be
  removed and since it will break backward compatibility, independantly
  of the version number upstream will give to his release. Is this wrong?

 It is wrong, because upstream can decide at some point in the future
 that the ABI is stable, and then start to call it libssh.so.0 or
 libssh.so.1. It is much safer to use libtool' -release flag, so that it
 is called libssh-$VERSION.so.0. To achieve that, just use something like
 this in Makefile.am:

 UP_VERSION=$(something that returns 0.11, the current version)
 libssh_la_LDFLAGS = -release $(UP_VERSION)

I see your point. I tried to fix that. Hope I didn't do it wrong

Should the package name contain the version number? (like the libssl
packages)

Thanks for your help.

 I don't understand your modifications. There are differences in the
 Makefile.in and configure files, but no differences in the Makefile.am
 and configure.ac files. Also, I don't understand the shlibs.local file.

The modifications in Makefile.in were made to change the SONAME and
filename of the library (now libssh-0.11.so.0).
I don't remember changing anything in the configure file.
There is indeed no changes in Makefile.am and configure.ac files since
they don't exist.
The shlibs.local was designed to be the shlibs file for the package, but
was useless since the shlibs file used is the one created by
dh_makeshlibs.

  Should the package name contain the version number? (like the libssl
  packages)

 Yes, it should be called libssh-0.11-0.

I'd rather call it libssh0.11 or libssh-0.11, since the -0 is the
package version number (I took the libssl0.9.7 package as example :
package name is libssl0.9.7, package version is 0.9.7g-1, and package
filename is libssl0.9.7_0.9.7g-1_i386.deb).

Bug#317081: ITP: hs-plugins -- Dynamically Loaded Haskell Modules

2005-07-05 Thread Florian Ragwitz
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Florian Ragwitz [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: hs-plugins
  Version : 0.9.8
  Upstream Author : Don Stewart
* URL : http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~dons/hs-plugins/
* License : GPL-2
  Description : Dynamically Loaded Haskell Modules

hs-plugins is a library for loading plugins written in Haskell into an
application at runtime. It also provides a mechanism for (re)compiling
Haskell source at runtime. Thirdly, a combination of runtime compilation
and dynamic loading provides a suite of eval functions. Values exported
by plugins are transparently available to Haskell host applications, and
bindings exist to use Haskell plugins from at least C and Objective C
programs.

Hej.

Come watch Liza get freaky!

When he unbuttoned his pants, she was wide-eyed looking at its massive girth in
horror!
But she finally managed to choke it down and then got it stuffed in her hole !

Cherry loved getting that black pole inserted way deep up inside her and she
moaned and groaned as her vagina got hammered good!

Hi John,
It seem from my observations that the debian release process has several
'hint's used: unstable to testing(britney), what not to build for arch
x(wanna-build),
linda/lintian check. It would seem to follow: to hint for known
circular dependencies.
Cheers,
Kev

 While I do find the above idea very useful, how does it help with the
 circular dependency issue? Could there be another tag
 ``In-Case-Of-Circular-Dependecy-Install-Me-First: True'' ? This would
 help in the case of *known* circular dependencies, and it leaves the
 thinking up to a human (or perhaps an autobuilder that has attempted
 various means of installing the circularly dependent packages, and
 determined a working method) instead of leaving it up to the client
 system to guess.

The discussion that prompted the above is that many circular dependancies are
caused by -data pacakges depending on -bin packages of tools to utilise that
data, so that the data packages are not left lying around on the system if the
tools are removed. The above addresses _those_ circular dependancies, because
it gives more data to the tools about what's independantly less useful than
the current 'libs' section, (as used by deborphan for this purpose).

(As far as this set is concerned, I feel that Depends _should_ mean This
doesn't work at all without that rather than This is useless without that.
And data, as far as I'm concerned, works by its very existance, even if the
right tool is not immediately at hand.)

There's another, more difficult class of circular dependancies which involves
parallel-installable shared library packages depending on a common binary,
which depends on one of the parallel-installable shared libraries. Or something
like that, anyway. ^_^

The above doesn't address this second class at all, as far as I can see, but
some kind of solution seems to have been come up with, at least for fontconfig.

Description:
 kdelibs- KDE core libraries metapackage
 kdelibs-bin - KDE core binaries
 kdelibs-data - KDE core shared data
 kdelibs4   - KDE core libraries
 kdelibs4-dev - KDE core libraries (development files)
 kdelibs4-doc - KDE core library documentation
Closes: 309955 311710 316255
Changes:
 kdelibs (4:3.3.2-7) unstable; urgency=high
 .
   +++ Changes by Adeodato Simó:
 .
   * Do not depend on the disappeared libjack0.80.0-0. Achieve so by updating
 the libtool used to build to the one currently in sid, so that it prunes
 unnecessary dependencies.
 .
   * The above libtool update removes the kdelibs4 dependency on libmad0, so
 closes: #311710 (does not have a versioned dependency on libmad0).
 .
   * Do not unconditionally remove /etc/kderc and other files in /etc on
 upgrades. Whatever those bits were there for, can be removed now that
 Sarge is released and shipped with them... (Closes: #316255) Deleted the
 now empty preinst scripts for kdelibs4 and kdelibs-bin.
 .
   * Acknowledge NMU by Frank Lichtenheld, thanks! (Closes: #309955)

 - debian/login.defs:

 Closes: #269583
   - Correct the assertion about the variable defined by QMAIL_DIR
