[EMAIL PROTECTED]: port qualification declarations for etch
Hello world! As you readers of d-d-a know well by now, one of the goals of the release team for etch is to put into effect standards governing which ports will be included in the release. The two month period for requalifying existing ports, set out in [0], has already begun, and it would be great to begin getting input from porters to help us fill in the table at [1]. It also wouldn't hurt porters to get feedback about which criteria their ports are currently failing to meet, so that they can either figure out how to meet them by November 20 or work with the release team to refine the criteria. To that end, I would like to invite you to join Anthony Towns and myself on IRC this Sunday, October 9 from -0200 UTC in the #debian-tech channel on irc.oftc.net. The goal of this two-hour session is to come up with a qualification declaration for as many architectures as possible, and to further refine the architecture criteria as necessary. A wiki page for the event can be found at [2]. This is also something of an inaugural event for the #debian-tech channel. If you don't already know about #debian-tech because you don't follow Planet Debian religiously (you know, with scented candles and angst, like any True Blogger), you can learn more about this new Debian channel-with-a-twist at [3]. The channel ops welcome your participation in this experiment, both for this event and in general. We ask that you read the channel charter[4] before joining the channel, so you are aware of a few basic ground rules; however, we do want to emphasize that the goal of the channel is to provide a friendly, easy-going, and productive environment and hope you will find that to be the case in spite of (and in part, because of!) our uncharacteristic moderated approach. So whether you're blocking out two hours on your weekend calendar, or just stopping in, we look forward to seeing you on #debian-tech this weekend! Cheers, -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. bootcdwrite
Hi As per my emails yesterday about a kiosk system, I've tried to generate a live CD using bootcdwrite from the bootcd package, and it produces an iso, I can mount the iso, and I can burn the iso (using k3b) - the CD just won't boot, either with Qemu or with a real system. Am I missing some special setting in bootcdwrite.conf? I am using the default - just changed the location where it produces the .iso. I don't understand why it wouldn't be bootable. New XTerm package, independent from X.Org, in experimental.
Hello, dear developers. In the XSF we are trying to prepare for the upcoming release of X.Org 6.9/7.0. Apart from the tremendous effort that David Nusinow is putting in the experimental packages for 6.9, we are going to finally deactivate xterm building in the 6.9 tree. For all of you that do not know, XTerm has been developed since 9 years ago or so by Thomas Dickey, apart from the XFree86 tree, as a set of patches. Even now that XFree86 and X.Org have different trees, both merge periodically with Thomas in order to have latest xterm. Given that XTerm has had a completely independent codebase since several years ago, it is a perfect candidate to be splitted from the tree. The amount of surgery was very small. :-) I have just uploaded xterm_204-0pre1 to experimental. This release fixes also several bugs in the alternatives system for x-terminal-emulator. Also it fixes the mess in /etc/alternatives on install and purge. The most prominent changes are that I dropped those pesky /usr/X11R6/* dirs and that xterm is now compiled with 256-colour support. xterm is now installed in /usr/bin, the manpages in /usr/share/man, and so on. Before anyone speaks, there are several things remaining in the packages: - The copyright note is yet incomplete. There are several copyright notes remaining, from the myriad of different contributors in the xterm sources. Thomas Dickey, that is very intimate with the code, has approved a new version of the debian/copyright file that I will ship in the next release. - The manpages keep ending in .1x.gz. I do not know if this is correct. David Nusinow is going to keep (as far as I know) that extension in 6.9 tree, but I am not against the change, now that we will follow FHS. - XTerm #204 is not the latest version! I know, I know, it is #205, but when I began to work on it, it was, I swore. That is a minor problem. - Oh, yes. My package is only compiled for i386. O:-) Please test it and report problems. I am specially interested in regression tests, i.e., things that worked before 204-0pre1. Note: this mail has a Reply-To header to debian-x@lists.debian.org, as I thought that it is better to keep the replies there (and to the fact that I do not read debian-devel). dh_libtool proposal (-dev dependencies on -dev from libtool)
This is an informal proposal for a dh_libtool program which I was considering implementing over the next few days. I'm not so sure though after reading bug 192008, so I thought I'd bring it up here and see if there's any kind of consensus. Basic problem: -dev packages for packages that use libtool need to have runtime dependencies on the -dev packages that provide the .la files that they need at link time. Basic proposal: provide dh_libtool to automate this. Note that this is called dh_libtool and not something more general to make it clear that it is addressing only the subset of the general problem that directly relates to libtool. This seems like a normal enough case to require a special case even if that special case doesn't fully solve the entire problem. Objections raised in 192008: this solution misses several cases including multiple -dev packages providing the same library and packages that don't use libtool. Joey Hess raises objections very clearly in his response to bug 192008, and I find them convincing, though sometimes we may fail to provide a solution that's good in many cases because it isn't good in all the cases we can think about. I'm not convinced that this tool couldn't still be useful as long as its limitations are understood. Details: In late July, there was a thread on debian-devel about handling -dev packages' dependencies on other -dev packages as required by libtool among other things. (Subject: SUMMARY: Re: shared library -dev package naming proposal) The thread discussed various aspects of libtool brokenness, but regardless of any of that, I had suggested that we have a program that could populate these dependencies automatically by parsing .la files, and various participants liked the idea. I had intended to implement this program during some time off I have between jobs. I'm now in that time off period and intend to work on this over the next few days. The proposal is to have this program populate a substvar named ${libtool:Depends}. I've studied this problem at a cursory level, and this is what I currently intend to do: * Traverse the directory to be installed for .la files * Parse the .la file to read dependency_libs item; scan this item for other .la files * Determine what packages provide the given .la files * Filter out packages that are already in the dependency list * Place the resulting packages in the libtool:Depends substitution variable This would, like other debhelper tools, take various arguments to control which package is being scanned and to control other aspects of the behavior that should be configurable. I will also study dh_shlibdeps and dpkg-shlibdeps to make sure that I'm not leaving anything out that's important. For the initial version, I will not overdesign this with anything analogous to shlibs files, though it would probably be important to at least support local overrides in case a .la file is provided by more than one package and the packager wishes to specify a specific dependency on one other than the one that is installed. (This case would not be covered by simply excluding existing explicit dependencies.) If this catches on and libtool isn't fixed to make it unnecessary, then some additional infrastructure support analogous to shlibs files could be added. In the mean time, versioned dependencies on other -dev packages can be listed explicitly or handled in local overrides, even though this has the unfortunate property of requiring the packager of the dependent package to keep track rather than the packager of the package that provides the lower .la file. For testing purposes, I would create a native package called dh-libtool that I would probably just put in my people.debian.org area. If people decide that this is a useful item, it should presumably be included as part of debhelper and also invoked from debhelper.mk in cdbs. (Other builder helpers that invoke debhelper could also be modified as needed, of course.) In that case, I would suggest it to the debhelper maintainers. There's actually a proof of concept script written by Michael Dänzer posted to bug 192008 (which I saw after writing all of the above) that could be a good starting place if this is actually worth pursuing. Comments? If there's no consensus, I'll probably abandon this project and just use a script to help me do it by hand when I need to do this. -- Jay Berkenbilt [EMAIL PROTECTED]

But I'm not really in favour of this at all. I think we should rather concentrate on avoiding the need to have those depedencies in most cases. Some things I think about: - It shouldn't be using the dependency_libs in most cases on atleast Linux in the first place when creating shared libraries. In that case, there shouldn't even be a reason to parse that line. The current Debian version is patched not to link to those libs, but it still parses that line anyway. Upstream is looking into a better fix for the whole dependency problem when linking, and it might be nice to fix that too. - There was talk about libtool dealing with missing .la files. I don't see how this would work. If you're trying to link staticly, it will need that file, for shared see above. What we could try and do is reduce the libraries that are in the dependency_libs field. For instance on Linux, when we only provide a shared lib, it's not needed to have anything in the dependency_libs. - Something else I wonder about is wether it currently works recursivly or not, I would need to check the code. If it did, we can probably also reduce the number of libraries in the dependency_libs for the general case. It now atleast has a list of all libs it will end up linking to, even for indirect dependencies. It really should only list the direct dependencies. This would also make it so much easier to change some dependency at a lower level, and we don't have to go and relink all the libraries like we for instance had to do in case howl was removed from main. Anyway, it would be great to get all those things in a new upstream libtool version. Kurt -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: new source package producing old deb's is not regarded as NEW
On Tue, Oct 04, 2005 at 07:01:07PM +0200, Frank Küster wrote: this week I uploaded a new source package, libkpathsea3, that produces existing binary packages (libkpathsea3, libkpathsea-dev). I was surprised to learn that this package was not subject to NEW processing, but rather was simply treated as any existing package. Your observations are correct, this is indeed what happens. The override file, which determines what packages are allowed in and what packages get in NEW for manual review, is simply a list of allowed package names. The assumption is here indeed that only if a totally new name comes about, it should be manually checked. There is a list for binary package names and for source package names, currently source packages are allowed if they occur in *either* of those two lists. As it happens, due to some changes in the details of the override file handling, new source package names will soon make the package go to NEW too, even though there already exists a binary package by that name. That the new source package name already exists as binary package name is quite exceptional, but in this case indeed it matters. Re: Bug#331528: ITP: debinstaller -- a graphical frontend for installing local .deb packages
I wonder why nobody did implement that feature before. I imagine (without knowing much about APT's internals), the pseudocode would look like that: - install command gets the list - if the package does not exist in the cache and the given string is a file, then: - read the metadata of this package - creating a virtual sources set containing that package and inject it somewhere in APTs graph representation. The access method would be file:, and it should get the highest possible priority (at least higher than any seen priority) - install the prerequisites and then the package with the usual methods fi would it not be simpler to have have apt just ask dpkg what the dependencies of the passed .deb are and then install the dependencies (and their dependecies) and then just pass the deb directly to dpkg? I see no need to create a virtual sources set or worry about priorities as the next time the apt is run the package will be seen as 'obsolete or locally created' (unless it exists in the repository), and therefore would use whatever priority apt gives such packages. But then again this might be too mutch of a kluge. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I think that there should be a way to use apt to install a .deb with automatic dependency handling (in fact when I first began using debian I tried several times to install a .deb using apt). I don't know why this functionality was never written. It seems to be fairly trivial. Perhaps there were some reasons that precluded this feature? Re: dh_libtool proposal (-dev dependencies on -dev from libtool)
[Jay Berkenbilt] Basic proposal: provide dh_libtool to automate this. Note that this is called dh_libtool and not something more general to make it clear that it is addressing only the subset of the general problem that directly relates to libtool. I'd suggest the name dh_libtool_deps or something - 'dh_libtool' could be a lot of things - it might run some transform on *.la files to be shipped, or update the in-tree copy of ltmain.sh from debian's libtool package, or who knows what. * Determine what packages provide the given .la files * Filter out packages that are already in the dependency list * Place the resulting packages in the libtool:Depends substitution variable I'd argue to go one step further and invent a virtual package like 'no-static-link-support' (well, a shorter name would be better) and generate each dependency on libfoo-dev | no-static-link-support. Then I can install one little equivs package to prevent installing a bunch of -dev packages I don't need. But maybe that's just me. Peter signature.asc Description: Digital signature

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Format: 1.7 Date: Mon, 3 Oct 2005 12:04:44 +0200 Source: xterm Binary: xterm Architecture: source i386 Version: 204-0pre1 Distribution: experimental Urgency: low Maintainer: Debian X Strike Force debian-x@lists.debian.org Changed-By: David MartÃnez Moreno [EMAIL PROTECTED] Description: xterm - X terminal emulator Closes: 305540 311438 315195 318280 318513 324352 Changes: xterm (204-0pre1) experimental; urgency=low . * The xterm package has been splitted from the upstream X.Org tree, in advance of the upcoming modularization in X.Org 7.0. * First release to experimental, in order to test if the transition has been successful. * Credit is given to X Strike Force for their good work over these years, keeping a bunch of old entries from current X.Org changelog. * Most of the corresponding code has been imported from the X.Org packages. Obviously, debian/rules has been revamped and simplified. * New upstream release (patchlevel #204). - The mere existence of independent packages for xterm eases the identification (i.e. xterm's version). Thus it closes: #324352. Also added a patch to version.h in the meanwhile to override the X.Org 6.8.2 string in the configure script. - Work around quirk in shell which allowed user to run uxterm script when there was no UTF-8 locale installed by entering sh -x uxterm. Also popup an xmessage to show the problem for users who run this via a GUI (closes: #318513). - Disallow changes to fonts, toolbar and scrollbar when the vt100 window is iconified, to simplify management of the active icon. - Fixes to make -geom option work properly with the toolbar configuration (Gentoo Bugzilla #90717, #91967). - Minor improvements to scrollbar layout. - Improve initialization due to utf8 resource by loading the utf8Fonts resource in the case where locale resource is false. Also in this case, do not disable switching UTF-8 mode on/off. - Minor optimization of TrueType font-loading. Load italic font only when needed. - Correct variable used to store temporary result from lookup of bold font, when initializing the wide-bold-font data and no immediate match is found by asking for a bold variant of the wide-font. The result was to use overstriking rather than the actual bold font (this is the fix for #318162, patch by Eugene Konev). - Modify initialization of allowSendEvents and allowWindowOps to prevent modification with the editres protocol. - Add support for interpreting the underline attribute as an italic font in Xft mode (patch by Chuck Blake). - Improve initialization of toolbar. - Fix logic in find_utmp, which did not reset result in getutid(), causing an infinite loop in some conditions. - Set the _NET_WM_PID property. - Change default values for minBufSize and maxBufSize to 4096 and 32768 respectively so that the initial read request will match the value from before changes to use sched_yield(). - Make paste of UTF-8 faster for Western character sets by checking range of incoming data. - Added experimental option to allow applications to get or set the selection data. - Fix an off-by-one error parsing -S/nn option (closes: #311438, thanks to Peter Chubb). - Fix an initialization bug from patch #201 that broke logging. - Amend change to command-line processing in patch #201 to avoid conflict with -e option (closes: #318280). * debian/control: Removed Conflicts with xbase 3.3.3.2whatever, and suidmanager 0.50. They are not even in Sarge. * The patch structure is basicly the same as in X.Org. The corresponding patches from X.Org patch tree have been extracted. Added a change in the .TH field of the manpage in order to shut up lintian. * Added --enable-256-color to configure (closes: #305540). * Moved away things from /usr/X11R6/ to /usr, now that we are free of imake's shackles. As a bonus, it removes several lintian warnings. Renamed things in debian/xterm.{postinst,prerm}. * Added an override file for lintian warning about setgid in xterm. * The postinst script is now fixed, and it points to correct manpages (closes: #315195).
