I'm guessing the LDAP interface is temporarily offline; aba mentioned a few days ago that he's moving some of his servers around, this could be related. The bts2ldap fullindex on merkel only lists some 4000 bugs, so that's indeed the cause for the pts/ddpo/etc to list so few bugs. This is being investigated, though there no ETA for the fix yet. Re: PHP License for PHP Group packages
It would be most helpful if we could make some progress on this issue. There are a handful of RC bugs whose maintainers are trying to work with their upstream authors to find resolution. In some cases the upstream authors believe that the problem should be fixed with the new PHP License. It is becoming unprofessional for us not to be able to give them a straight answer. Once again, I repeat my claim: that the 3.01 version of the PHP License is equally fit for licensing PHP itself and PHP Group software. This claim has been upheld over months of sporadic discussion on the matter at debian-legal. Given the lack of disagreement on this issue, I would again like to request that the FTP Masters update their policy to accept PHP Group packages with the PHP License, in addition to PHP itself. Or in the absense of a willingness to do so, please step forward so that we can further this discussion and deal professionally with the upstream authors of the current RC bugs related to the PHP License. cheers, Charles -Original Message- From: Charles Fry [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: PHP License for PHP Group packages Date: Fri, 6 Jan 2006 18:41:33 -0500 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: debian-legal@lists.debian.org FTP Masters, As you are well aware, the current REJECT-FAQ[1] forbids the use of the PHP License for anything except for PHP itself. In August I contacted the Pear Group about this[2], to no immediate avail. In October Joerg Jaspert opened a number of RC bugs with existing Debian packages of Pear packages which use the PHP License (bugs 332606, 332607, 332608, 332609, 332610, 332611, 332613, 332614, 332615, 332616, 332617, and 332618 are still open). In November I sent a message to all upstream maintainers about the situation, requesting them to change their license. Pierre Joye, a member of the Pear Group, reported in bug #332607[3] that the Pear Group had asked the PHP Group to modify the PHP License in order to make it fit for use by Pear packages. Soon thereafter he announced[4] version 3.01 of the PHP License was released, and that it should fix the problems we were concerned with. Since that time there has been an ongoing discussion about the PHP License. While many are concerned that the PHP Licence itself is not free (even for PHP), it appears that the new PHP License can be applied on equal grounds to both PHP and PHP Group software, thus making it as fit for use with Pear packages as it is for PHP[5,6]. Given this new development, I would like to request that the FTP Masters start accepting PHP Group packages licenced under the PHP License (at least as long as the PHP License is still considered free enough for PHP in Debian), or at least join the current discussion, pushing it to one of its two logical conclusions: the acceptance of the PHP Licence as free for PHP and PHP Group software (and an accompanying update of the REJECT_FAQ, and the closing of the open RC bugs in Pear packages), or the rejection of the PHP License for both PHP and PHP Group software in Debian (and the opening of an RC bug with PHP itself, and a request to the PHP Group to further update their license). thanks, Charles 1. http://ftp-master.debian.org/REJECT-FAQ.html 2. http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/08/msg00188.html 3. http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/11/msg00259.html 4. http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/11/msg00260.html 5. http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/12/msg00142.html 6. http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2006/01/msg00056.html -- Take a tip For your trip No wet brush To soak Your grip Burma-Shave http://burma-shave.org/jingles/1931/take_a_tip -- Pa acted So tickled Ma thot He was pickled He'd just tried Burma-Shave http://burma-shave.org/jingles/1942/pa_acted signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Angst provides methods for aggressive sniffing on switched local area network environments. It dumps the payload of all the TCP packets received on the specified ports. Debian Installer team monthly meeting minutes (20060128 meeting)
(reply-to: debian-boot) The ninth Debian Installer team meeting was held from 17:00UTC to 18:09UTC on Saturday January 28th 2006. There were about 73 people connected to the channel during the meeting and 13 of them spoke during the meeting at least once. The full log of the meeting is available at http://people.debian.org/~bubulle/d-i/irc-meeting-20060128/log Beta2 release - Most of the meeting discussions were targeted at the D-I etch beta2 release process. Please refer to http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2006/01/msg00559.html for the current timeline. Kernel status - The transition of 2.6.15 kernel packages to testing is what determines the whole schedule, so the discussion was initially focussed on this. An upload of 2.6.15-4 packages to unstable is planned around this week-end. (2/2 note: did not happen yet) A dependency loop exists with udev but is not release critical, from the RM point of view, so this should not prevent 2.6.15-4 to enter testing. Frans confirmed later with Steve Langasek this is a RC issue but couldn't find the bug anymore. Maximilian Attems mention a leak with md (drivers?) which supposedly has been fixed in lkml. Whether this is RC or not needs to be determined. In short, the transition of 2.6.15-4 has to be fasttracked and we have to remind all our fellow developers that this is a blocker for D-I beta2 release. Initrd generators - No blocker issue remains. There is work on klibc and stuff that needs choices and decisions (see the meeting log for the details) but this is anyway not a blocker for us as there are working options for all arches with some recent work on base-installer. Status of udebs transition -- Almost all general AND arch-specific udebs have been rebuilt and uploaded. Some work remains for m68k and hppa. Frans will post a reminder to the porters. hppa needs to switch from 2.6.14 to 2.6.15 and upload its arch-specific udebs (post-meeting update: Dann Frazier did the uploads, except kernel that will be handled by Bdale Garbee). m68k needs kernel udeb updates and its arch-specific udebs as well. base-installer will be rebuilt and uploaded to fix the last discovered untranslatable strings and add the needed translations. An iso-codes upload could trigger some interest in rebuilding localechooser and then add some more translations for country names. choose-mirror could benefit from this as well. Christian will first check whether he can do the NMU for iso-codes (usually well accepted by its maintainer). A request to hint locales (and therefore) should be sent as its 2.3.5-10 version is needed by localechooser. There is no blocker except the presence of a udeb requiring a request from us. (post-meeting update: this has been done by Frans) Release blockers The main blocker is obviously the kernel transition. See above. Other issues exist: Some work should still be done on localization-config to integrate the stage1. Konstantinos Margaritis will be unavailable for months, thanks to the Greek Army. He's currently seeking for someone to act as l-c co-maintainer during that time. Anyway, even without l-c, the localized installs work pretty well as X now successfully detects the needed keymap. So, this issue is not a blocker. A few UTF-8 issues currently exist. The weirdest one seems to be corrupted display (Mojibake) with languages *not* using UTF-8 (such as Korean) when debconf screens are shown during pkgsel runs. The workaround is to switch all languages to UTF-8 (which is pretty much the case now). These UTF-8 issues have to be coordinated. Miroslav Kure volunteered to follow all such issues and summarize them on the wiki, for instance in http://wiki.debian.org/UTF8BrokenApps. There seems to be some brokeness with aptitude on hppa. The issue has to be made clearer right now. Julien Louis will do an install report of the issue he encountered. Both hppa and m68k are currently uninstallable because they are being ignored for testing migrations and bugs are preventing some packages in base from being updated which causes debootstrap to fail... All these are actually not really blockers except the issue of the netinst image (and, of course, the kernel transition). Finalize the schedule - Nothing really worth mentioning. The blocker is the kernel transition. Frans schedule is still pertinent. Heavy testing can already begin, by using the daily builds (the dailies point to sid_d-i, which is currently appropriate). Official testing and filling the release-checklist file in installer/doc/devel will begin when all udebs have been migrated to testing and the daily links have been switched for etch_d-i. This ends discussions directly related to beta2. partman-crypto status - Most issues are summarized on http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstallerCrypto. Max Vozeler explains that the main blocker to build and upload a
Automatic testing of .deb's
(Note crosspost to debian-devel and ubuntu-devel. If your reply does not concern both Debian and Ubuntu, please remove the inappropriate list. And of course, in general, do not CC individual posters unless they ask for it.) Following discussions at Ubuntu's Montreal meeting, on debian-devel, and elsewhere, I've done an initial implementation of my planned automatic testing framework. In many ways it is still a proof of concept, and it lacks many useful features, but it can already be used to test packages in a chroot in a basic way. The package with the test machinery is `autodebtest'[1] and can be found[2] in Ubuntu dapper and Debian sid. The dependencies are relatively conservative so I think the .deb should install and work with breezy or sarge too. There is currently only one test in one package. I picked `mawk' as an example because it is a package which is (i) very stable (ii) has limited dependencies and (iii) has at least some upstream test suite. The new test runs the provided upstream mawk tests (they are not separated out by the upstream test suite so it looks like one test from the autodebtest point of view). This new version of the mawk package has not been published anywhere yet. So, I have appended the (small) patch to this message. Next on my todo list for this project is to try to integrate piuparts somehow. This will mean inventing some machinery for `any package' tests. Should I file the mawk patch, attached, as a wishlist bug against mawk[3] ? It would be nice to be able to integrate the tests for each package as far upstream as possible; at the moment, that probably means putting it in the Debian packages. Re: NEWS.Debian abuse
FWIW, the developer's reference has a section describing proper use of NEWS.Debian files. I post it here in full because IMHO many developers need to read this again. In particular, many NEWS.Debian files I have seen are not properly formatted (many use changelog style bullets and are unnecessarily terse) and do not speak to the correct audience (users, not package developers). 6.3.4. Supplementing changelogs with NEWS.Debian files -- Important news about changes in a package can also be put in NEWS.Debian files. The news will be displayed by tools like apt-listchanges, before all the rest of the changelogs. This is the preferred means to let the user know about significant changes in a package. It is better than using debconf notes since it is less annoying and the user can go back and refer to the NEWS.Debian file after the install. And it's better than listing major changes in README.Debian, since the user can easily miss such notes. The file format is the same as a debian changelog file, but leave off the asterisks and describe each news item with a full paragraph when necessary rather than the more concise summaries that would go in a changelog. It's a good idea to run your file through dpkg-parsechangelog to check its formatting as it will not be automatically checked during build as the changelog is. Here is an example of a real NEWS.Debian file: cron (3.0pl1-74) unstable; urgency=low The checksecurity script is no longer included with the cron package: it now has its own package, checksecurity. If you liked the functionality provided with that script, please install the new package. -- Steve Greenland [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat, 6 Sep 2003 17:15:03 -0500 The NEWS.Debian file is installed as /usr/share/doc/package/NEWS.Debian.gz. It is compressed, and always has that name even in Debian native packages. If you use debhelper, dh_installchangelogs will install debian/NEWS files for you. Unlike changelog files, you need not update NEWS.Debian files with every release. Only update them if you have something particularly newsworthy that user should know about. If you have no news at all, there's no need to ship a NEWS.Debian file in your package. No news is good news! -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature
timezone data packaged separately and in volatile?
Hi, I just realised that the timezone data in glibc is taken from an upstream database (namely ftp://elsie.nci.nih.gov/pub/). This data sometimes changes, more rapidly than our release cycle (and than any release cycle we can reasonable have). Examples include the Cuba no stop to daylight saving nearly last-minute change in November 2005 (affecting changes effective 1 October 2005) or the upcoming Indiana changes (to be effective in April 2006) that got into the database on 30 January 2006. Currently, for these changes to propagate to Debian, these delays occur: - upstream glibc synchronises with their upstream (this took about month and a half for the Cuba example). - glibc release (or Debian packages CVS snapshot or Debian glibc patched for newer upstream upstream release) - Debian packages glibc release, with all portability issues and all. - Debian release What I propose, due to the somewhat tight schedule sometimes in play: - Package the timezone data as a separate (source+binary) package tzdata, directly from glibc's upstream. - Put that package in volatile.debian.net . This would allow updating the timezone data, that is subject to short-delay political changes, independently from the sensitive libc6{,.1} package. And thus have it in volatile :) The tzdata package could be the only source of timezone data (and libc6{,.1} would depend on it, it would be required, essential) or libc6{,.1} could still ship its copy, which would be diverted by tzdata and replaced by its newer copy. In the second scenario, I'd imagine tzdata to be of priority important or standard and installed by default on new installs (maybe suggested / recommended by libc6?). Probably making it simple and taking the first solution would be best. libc6 currently Replaces: timezone, timezones, which suggests that we were doing something like that before but we moved away from this solution. Why? The Debian glibc maintainers seem to sometimes go to a newer-than upstream tzdata release in the Debian patch. Is there any issue I'm missing? Mike Hi Mike, of course someone can learn about a package or term used in a package from a source other than the short or long description and then choose to use a package but doing an 'apt-cache search show' is supposed to be useful. And if it requires a person or google search to explain why I may want to use a package, the person may not be available and google could take time and may never lead to a sufficient explanation which leads to joe user who may not have net access or sufficient human resources ever using a package. So basically some descriptions need to be edited to define some terms more but not to an encyclopedic degree. And thus you need to find the balance between terseness and verbosity. The debtags may address this issue, but they are at times cryptic and thus need a definition. I was just looking at 'molphy' and found tags for 'culture::bosnia' and 'admin::logging'.
