Not only that, but Evince can be quite slow at rendering complex documents.

Are there any benchmarks on that? poppler (on which evince is based)
aims to be better than xpdf in that, but it seems some of the additional
functions have slowed it down. The poppler people appreciate input on
that, with example files etc.

Of course, everything highly depends on your definition of light. If I
were to make a list of packages for a light desktop, my selection
 would be entirely different.

One thing at least is clear: xpdf only depends on a couple of xlibs,
whereas libpoppler pulls in libcairo and one of the frontend libraries
(qt or glib).

This is pretty exciting, especially for people like me who loved Eiffel
when we were young idealistic students but wandered away due to the
fragmented community and the pain of having to write a wrapper every
time you want to use a library. Will ISE release the Gtk wrappers they
obviously have and the OpenGL wrappers they presumably do?

If people make a fork to add ++, break, and continue, and everyone uses
them, will B. Meyer finally become slightly less uptight and embrace
them
as well? :)

Well, the wiki page has a last change date. The AM (or FD) will notice
that it's not up-to-date and they can ask you to update it.

Really it's only important to have it ready when you start the process,
and if all goes well the idea is that your process starts immediately
because we've gotten rid of the backlog due to our changes.

Even if that's not the case, you will notice when you're getting at the
top of the waiting list and at that time you could decide to update your
wiki page.

It's not necessary to be up-to-date always.

TI calcs related packages up for adoption

2006-04-13 Thread Julien BLACHE
Hi,

I am putting the following (source) packages up for adoption:
 - tilp: TI calculator - PC communication program for X
 - tiemu: Texas Instruments calculators emulator
 - skinedit: skin editor for TiEmu
 - tidev-modules: Sources for drivers for Texas Instruments calculators link
cables

And their support libraries, too:
 - libtifiles0: Texas Instruments calculators file formats library
 - libticables3: support library for Texas Instruments link cables
 - libticalcs4: provides functions to communicate with TI calculators

I kind of lost interest in the TiLP project, thus I'm no longer the
best maintainer for these packages.

Note that TiLP II and TiEmu III are out upstream; it is a new
generation, and they need newer versions of the libraries. If you're
interested in adopting the above packages, you should probably package
the new versions, then ask for removal of tilp, tiemu, and libti*.

The packages are now orphaned, feel free to pick them up.

WNPP Bug#:
 - tilp: 362157
 - tiemu: 362159
 - skinedit: 362161
 - tidev-modules: 362162
 - libtifiles0: 362166
 - libticables3: 362163
 - libticalcs4: 362164

Assuming that the virtual package 'sunwlxsl' doesn't have conflicting

IMHO the gtk (v1) applications are a little ugly and the Gtk2 slow.
But the applications with a theme without many resources can be
faster.

That's an admiral goal, however I would be prepared for a great deal of

happy with what I ended up with.

I would like to receive opinions about my packages list:

  - xfce4 (beautiful!)

You may want to offer a choice of window manager. On low-end machines
I'm partial to WindowMaker, but IceWm, FluxBox, or BlackBox are also
 good choices.

  - gdm

If you're going to pull in gnome depencies anyway gdm is a good choice,
otherwise wdm may be better (but AFAIK wdm isn't keyboard-only
 friendly).

  - gftp
  - mozilla-firefox

I would also install dillo that the user has a choice between a fast,
but no javascript, css, java, flash, etc support (dillo), or a slow (on
the hardware you describe) browser that is otherwise great.

Dillo is faster. I used here but some sites doesn't open very nice and
Dillo doesn't have compatibility with the WM (copy and past functions
for sample).

  - mozilla-thunderbird

On a P1?! No way. Thunderbird is slower than molasses in January. I
would recommend Sylpheed or Sylpheed-claws as a much faster/better
alternative. In fact I have recently switched to sylpheed-claws on my
personal workstation (Duron 850M/2.2G) because it's so much faster,
keyboard-friendly, and I'm finding it a better piece of software.

Yes! Sounds good. Is more one option

  - menu

I'd recommend against making an install task that is both about console
and GUI. Console vs desktop should be different tasks IMO. They
could, however, be part of the same cd (set).

  - gcalctool (or xcalc)
  - evince

Any particular reason for not just using xpdf?

Evince have more resources and combine with the Xfce interface.
In the reality I would like to keep the applications with the same
appearance. Possibly gtk2.

  - eog
  - gaim
  - zip
  - unzip
  - arj
  - bzip2
  - file-roller
  - gnome-utils
  - inkscape
  - gimp
  - abiword

This is what I would use too, but I know someone who swears by LyX on
low-end machines, so you may want to check it out. LyX is a GUI for
LaTeX (and maybe DocBook, but I'm not clear on that) that is apparently
easy to get started with and works well for writing reports and
 technical documents.

I will add in my list...

  - gnumeric
  - gnumeric-plugins-extra
  - gnome-system-monitor
  - firestarter

Those all look good. You may also want to toss in a couple of small
 graphical games.

I made some tests with sucess in my machines with the following setup:
  Pentium 166 MHZ - 64 MB RAM - HD 2 GB

What do you mean by success? Installs and can load, or you have tried
to do some of your usual activities and found the experience
reasonable? I know that when I was working on this, that I was getting
frustrated by the speed (though come to think if it, I was also using
32 MB RAM) of firefox and some other apps. I also found that the 1.2
GB drive I had was pretty cramped, and that I couldn't install
everything I had on the cd I made up (and which I already considered
 cramped).

Yes, with 64 MB RAM the things happens a little more fast. The firefox
is slow but only until start.

Having said that, I have been considering trying again, now that a
medical condition is under control and not interfering with my ability
to focus, if I can find the time between work (which at present is not
even computer related) and the various other projects I have on the
go. If you need a tester I will likely be able to help.

Ok!

Also I have a number of scripts and things that I was making to make
life easier for this project. I was also trying to go the debian's
package list to categorize everything, and to pick out and test various
apps that could be useful on a low end machine.

Send me...
Perhaps we can use in Debian...

 Best of luck!

 Daniel

P.S. I have cc'd you because I don't know if you are subscribed to
 debian-devel or not.

In the majority of the times the user doesn't knows what is XFCE.
IMHO, xfce is seemed Gnome and Kde.
The idea is to have good applications for a light desktop (no depend

Assuming that the virtual package 'sunwlxsl' doesn't have conflicting
meanings on different architectures, I see no reason not to provide the
virtual package on all architectures. Non-OpenSolaris derived architectures
may ignore the virtual package entirely, but that isn't harming anything.

Its not harming, yes, but it will show up as an unrelated info.

I'm a bit confused about why you need to Provide a crazy sun package name,
though -- are you intending for the Debian packaging system to integrate
with the native packaging system somehow, and the two to cooperate?

Not exactly having two packaging system installed.

There are two reasons for those virtual package names:

1) Utilize existing SVR4 packages;

Since a lot of software comes as SVR4 packages, they needs to be
seamlessly installed on NexentaOS without too much pain for end user. It
includes third party kernel drivers like 3c9xx, user space stuff like
JRE/JDK, Oracle, Sun Studio, NetBeans, StarOffice, etc

We already extended alien package to fully support SVR4 conversion,
now I'm thinking of the way to provide utilities set which will do such
an installation on the fly. I.e. it will be based on SVR4 utilities
interfaces but backend will be in Debian format. i.e. instead of dpkg
-i package user will call pkg_add -d package and pkg_add will do
on the fly conversion into .deb with subsequent dpkg -i ... invocation.

Since outside packages assumes SVR4 core packages to be present, we need
to provide virtual names to make such an installations possible.

2) Make OpenSolaris core happy and share some common packages.

OpenSolaris core has 200+ and number is growing as Sun keep open
sourcing new code according to their Roadmap[1]. Those packages has
interdependence as per original SVR4 meta organization. It also includes
packages which could be shared outside of core. Good examples are
libxml2, libxslt, perl, etc which are in native SVR4 form looks like
accordingly sunwxml, sunwxslt, sunwperl, etc. Therefore, to share common
packages we need to provide virtual names and virtual names should match
original crazy names because of internal core dependencies and possible
outside packages (1).

To make all this work cleanly, we are thinking to extent dpkg (related
bug [2]) with modified conffiles format as:

conf-file [action-class-name]

[action-class-name] is similar behavior to original SVR4 specification,
i.e.

i.name - invoke when conffile gets installed
r.name - invoke when conffile gets removed
...

Once we have the above implemented, it would be trivial to cleanly
convert SVR4 packages on the fly, so this would a prerequisite for (1).

The problem is not rebuilding, the problem is having several dozen other
packages completely blindsided by this change *with no coordination*. The
Xorg 7.0 transition was presented to the release team as no big deal, just
splitting the package. Instead, it's leaving half the packages in the
build queue unbuildable because of disruptive changes that no one thought
worth mentioning.

I agree with the principle of dropping .la files in cases where .pc files
are available as a better substitute, but not without *coordinating* with
people. The repeated statements from the release team that library changes
should be coordinated aren't some whim of those wacky RMs that should be
ignored; keeping a handle on the disruptive changes going into unstable is
essential if we're going to keep the announced release schedule.

So far I'm very unimpressed with the resultant bug count from the Xorg 7
transition.

Anything uploaded this way will still fail to build on all other
architectures, so will have to be handled manually by the buildd
maintainers. If this is for Debian, please wait until the package is
buildable again with pristine unstable before trying to upload it.

Bug#362266: ITP: scribus-ng -- developmental version of the desktop publishing program Scribus

2006-04-13 Thread Oleksandr Moskalenko
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Oleksandr Moskalenko [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: scribus-ng
  Version : 1.3.3.1
Upstream Author : Scribus development team [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://www.scribus.net/
* License : GPLv2
  Programming Lang: C++
Description : Developmental branch of the document layout program Scribus

Scribus is an open source desktop page layout program with the aim of
producing commercial grade output in PDF and Postscript, primarily, though
not exclusively for Linux. This package contains new generation branch of
scribus that is still in active development, but is a lot more featureful
compared to the stable 1.2.x branch (scribus package) and sufficiently
stable to warrant its inclusion into the Debian distribution.

Scribus can be used for many tasks; from brochure design to newspapers,
magazines, newsletters and posters to technical documentation. It has
sophisticated page layout features like precision placing and rotating of text
and/or images on a page, manual kerning of type, bezier curves polygons,
precision placement of objects, layering with RGB and CMYK custom colors. The
Scribus document file format is XML-based. Unlike proprietary binary file
formats, even damaged documents, can be recovered with a simple text editor.

Scribus supports professional DTP features, such as CMYK color and a
color management system to soft proof images for high quality color printing,
flexible PDF creation options, Encapsulated PostScript import/export and
creation of 4 color separations, import of EPS/PS and SVG as native vector
graphics, Unicode text including right to left scripts such as Arabic and
Hebrew via freetype. Graphic formats which can be placed in Scribus as images
include PDF, Encapsulated Post Script (eps), TIFF, JPEG, PNG and XPixMap(xpm),
and any bitmap type supported by QT3.

Printing, PDF and SVG creation are done via custom driver libraries and
plug-ins, giving Scribus inventive features: the abilities to include
presentation effects with PDF output, fully scriptable interactive PDF
forms, SVG vector file output. The internal printer drivers fully support
Level 2 and Level 3/PDF 1.4 postscript features including transparency and
 font embedding.

When run from KDE, Drag and Drop, for example from desktop to the canvas,
is enabled. There is easy to use drag and drop scrapbook for frequently
used items such as text blocks, pictures and custom shaped frames.

Depends. IceWM with a tiny Filemanager (eg. emelfm) suffies my idea of

xfce4 | x-window-manager.

 - evince

As other pointed out, does basically the same job as xpdf but pulls half
of the Gnome.

 - eog

As said, Gnome bloat. Use gqview or pornview.

 - gaim

Please depend on gaim | psi | licq or so.

 - arj

Who cares about arj nowadays? I suggest installing the unp package
instead, it will tell user which program is needed to install for a
certain type of archive.

 - file-roller

Is there really no other choice without GNOME dependencies?

 - wvdial

What's wrong with chat?

 - gnome-ppp

Bloat for a simple task like Interface status watching. Configuration
can be done wiht pppconfig once. And even then, it's too specific for a
Desktop meta package, IMO.

 - gnome-utils

You can replace all of them with lightweigt alternatives: xwd (or import
from imagemagic or even gimp for screenshots), ding, locate (make some
GUI), superformat (make some GUI, I have written one years ago, see
GSwissKnife on Freshmeat).

 - inkscape

Too specific for a Desktop package.

 - gimp
 - abiword
 - gnumeric
 - gnumeric-plugins-extra
 - gnome-system-monitor

The last time I used this monitor, it was the application using much
more memory than every other one. Do you really want it for a
lightweight desktop?

 (closes: #356887)
   * The chanlog entry in 1.2.4-2 refering to vanessa libraries and
~/.magic is incorrect. While the description of the .magic problem
is accurate, the affected dependancies are libstonith0,
libpils0, and possibly others, but not vanessa, as linux-ha
does not use thos libraries. This is a cut and paste error
as I updated the perdition packages at the same time.

Binary: wfaroese aspell-fo ifaroese
Architecture: source i386 all
Version: 0.2.16-1.3

Maintainer: Peter Makholm [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Changed-By: Pierre Habouzit [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Description:
aspell-fo - The Faroese dictionary for aspell
ifaroese - The Faroese dictionary for ispell
wfaroese - The Faroese dictionary / wordlist
Closes: 313087 319673
Changes:
 ispell-fo (0.2.16-1.3) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Non-maintainer upload.
   [ Pierre Habouzit ]
 .
   * Update Standards-Version to 3.6.2.
   * Update debhelper compatibility to 5 (and raise buil-dependency).
   * Use patch from Jurij Smakov to implement correct aspell migration.
 .
   [ Jurig Smakov ]
   * Implemented required changes to adapt aspell-fo to latest aspell and
 dictionary packaging policy:
 - Added the dictionary info file, installed as
   /var/lib/dictionaries/common/aspell/aspell-fo.
 - Switched to 'Architecture: all', as the arch-dependent files
are now generated at install time.
 - Added dependency on aspell (= 0.60.3-3), dropped dependency
   on libaspell15.
 - Changed Provides to aspell-dictionary instead of aspell6-dictionary.
 - Changed debian/rules to generate an arch-independent word list
instead of aspell master file, it installs into /usr/share/aspell.
 - Added build-dependency on aspell, since it contains the prezip
utility required for building the compressed word list.
 - Added the files required by new aspell.
 - Added an invocation of installdeb-aspell to debian/rules. It
installs the dictionary info file and adds postinst and postrm
scripts which register and deregister the dictionary.
 (Closes: #319673)
   * Changed all references to the name of the language to its code (fo), as
recommended by aspell manual and the policy, to avoid the problems caused
 by inconsistent naming. (Closes: #313087)

Hash: SHA1

Format: 1.7
Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2006 23:28:05 +0100
Source: rzip
Binary: rzip
Architecture: source i386
Version: 2.1-1
Distribution: unstable
Urgency: low
Maintainer: Alec Berryman [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Changed-By: Alec Berryman [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Description:
rzip - compression program for large files
Closes: 297701 299327 315382 319158 353109 355835
Changes:
 rzip (2.1-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream fixes a bug that prevented some files from being
 uncompressed. Closes: #353109.
   * The man page in the previous version incorrectly stated the default
compression level; this was a mistake while backporting changes for 2.0-2.
The patch with the error has been removed and the man page again correctly
states the default compression level (-6). Closes: #299327.
   * 10mod_time.dpatch from David Frey: preserve modification times. Closes:
 #315382.
   * 20long-options.dpatch: implement GNU-style long options.  Closes: #297701.
   * 30man_spelling corrects a spelling error. Spotted by A Costa. Closes:
 #355835.
   * 40runzip.dpatch: link rzip to runzip as the bzip2 and gzip packages do.
 Closes: #319158.
   * 50fhs.dpatch: Don't install man pages into /usr/man.
   * Update standards version.
   * Provide a more enlightening description of rzip in debian/control.
   * Fixup copyright file to correctly attribute copyrights for md4.* and
 rzip.c.

Accepted germinate 0.12 (source all)

2006-04-13 Thread Colin Watson
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Format: 1.7
Date: Mon, 3 Apr 2006 23:25:23 +0100
Source: germinate
Binary: germinate
Architecture: source all
Version: 0.12
Distribution: unstable
Urgency: high
Maintainer: Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Changed-By: Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Description:
germinate - Expand dependencies in a list of seed packages
Closes: 360631
Changes:
 germinate (0.12) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Upload to Debian (closes: #360631).
   * Switch to my debian.org maintainer address.
 .
 germinate (0.11) dapper; urgency=low
 .
   * Fix plantSeed() backward incompatibility for *-meta/update scripts by
 defaulting seedrelease to None.
 .
 germinate (0.10) dapper; urgency=low
 .
   * Add seed distribution name to seed descriptions in the Why column.
 .
 germinate (0.9) dapper; urgency=low
 .
   * When processing the build tree, germinate is (correctly) careful not to
promote packages from lesser seeds, since we still want to consider them
(e.g.) part of ship even if they're build-dependencies of desktop.
However, this sometimes caused us to select the wrong alternative from
 an or-ed build-dependency (e.g. redland Build-Depends:
 libmysqlclient15-dev | libmysqlclient12-dev | libmysqlclient10-dev and
libmysqlclient15-dev was in the Ubuntu supported seed). To fix this,
process the packages at that point anyway and just avoid promoting them.
 .
 germinate (0.8) dapper; urgency=low
 .
   * When identifying extras, check for binaries built from multiple source
packages and skip any superseded binaries.
   * Change default for --components to main and restricted, since the Ubuntu
seeds rely on packages from restricted in order to germinate correctly.
 .
 germinate (0.7) dapper; urgency=low
 .
   * Depend on python-apt (thanks, Jani Monoses).
 .
 germinate (0.6) dapper; urgency=low
 .
   * Add regular expression support in seeds. Weaken architecture
specification error checking in order to be able to use [...] in regular
 expressions more easily.
   * Add support for including all the binaries from a given source package
 (using %source) in seeds.
   * Add germinate --cleanup option, to prevent caching of Packages and
 Sources files.
   * Add germinate --source-mirror option, to allow Packages and Sources
files to be on different mirrors (e.g. Ubuntu ports architectures).
 .
 germinate (0.5) dapper; urgency=high
 .
   * Stop accidentally including extra in the all and supported+build-depends
 outputs.
 .
 germinate (0.4) dapper; urgency=low
 .
   * Don't attempt to satisfy versioned dependencies of .debs using virtual
packages, as the packaging toolchain doesn't support that. (udpkg/anna
do support this for .udebs, and the installer relies on that.)
   * Change default distribution to dapper.
 .
 germinate (0.3) breezy; urgency=low
 .
   * Add a man page for germinate.
   * Explain in pkg-diff --help that you can supply a list of seeds to
 compare against as non-option arguments.
   * Update pkg-diff's default seeds to 'minimal standard desktop', to match
 the breezy seeds.
   * Add germinate --seed-packages option, to allow calculating dependencies
of individual extra packages during a germinate run.
   * Policy version 3.6.2. No changes required.
   * Update GPL notices with the FSF's new address.
 .
 germinate (0.2) breezy; urgency=low
 .
   * Fix formatting of output lines with UTF-8 maintainer strings.
   * Really pick the first reason from the build-dependency tree to display
 in output files.
   * Record allowed d-i kernel versions on a per-seed basis, so that we can
have some kernel versions supported for netboot installations only.
   * Force a trailing slash onto the end of any --seed-source argument.
 .
 germinate (0.1) breezy; urgency=low
 .
   * Initial release.
