Bug#440607: ITP: steam-powered -- Valve's steam game content delivery system

2007-09-03 Thread Michael Gilbert
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Michael Gilbert [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Package name: steam-powered
  Version : 6

* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: shell
Description : Valve's steam game content delivery system

This package is a wrapper that makes it easy to install and run Valve's
Steam program via wine. The intent will be for this package to be a
part of the contrib archive. A preliminary version of the package has
been uploaded to debian-mentors for review and testing, [1]. There has
already been some interesting discussion on the mentors list. Please
read [2], [3], and [4] to get up to speed. I am looking forward to the
discussion and getting this package added to the archive.

Steam (www.steampowered.com) is a game content delivery system
developed by Valve software (http://www.valvesoftware.com). This is
a windows application, which is supported on your Debian system via
wine (http://www.winehq.org). Not all steam games work at this time,
but many do. Games that work very well include half-life,
counter-strike, half-life 2, and counter-strike: source. More
information about steam can be found at http://www.steampowered.com.

(BTW, this makepasswd doesn't seem to be isntalled by default)

And can also be easily patched (I bet).

Also, as a makepasswd user, I often have to invoke it as
makepasswd --minchars 8 since several passwords I have to generate
require a minimum of 8 characters anyway.

Cheers.

It seems you disagree, but don't really give a rationale for it except
some other programs we have in Debian default to 6 chars. Am I right?

And what's the rationale to change the minimum length to 8? It won't
help security, as people who pick weak passwords now, will still pick
weak, but longer, passwords.

I agree with Bas here: I'm all for removing the Debian deviation from
upstream, so please go ahead with that, but raising it further is not
necessarily a useful thing to do. I can easily think of a 6-char password
that is a lot more difficult to guess than an 8 char one.

2007-09-03 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

[Steve Langasek]
Does anyone else have a reasoned argument why Debian should have a
weaker password length check than upstream (4 chars instead of 6)?
If not, this will be changed in the next upload of pam.

I've been told that the schools using Debian Edu in lower grades pick
very simple and short passwords for the kids, and this will become
harder if the minimum lenght is increased. Thought it was best to
bring that up publicly.

I am not sure if these schools practice is a good idea, nor if it
should be allowed in the future, but it should at least be part of the
background when the change is considered.

Happy hacking,

They will, of course, be able to change the default value for the
minimum password length to something less, so I don't think that's a
reason against changing the default length.

hopefully published soon.

backports tool

2007-09-03 Thread Luis Matos
Hello there ...

i had an idea that probably someone already had ...

i am using etch and i use anjuta for c/c++ development.

i would try anjuta 2.2 because it seems to be a huge improvement over
1.2.4. To do that i have to put the sid sources to sources.list,
re-compile some stuff and then install them.

the search for the dependencies and download one by one is a complicated
and time wasting task.

how about the development of tool on we could:

 - add the sid repos to sources.list
 - with a simple command download every needed source package
(dependencies)
 - build the packages
 - install all the packages.

examples:

  apt-backport install anjuta -t sid

this would download all needed dependencies from sid, recompile the
needed and install all.

  apt-backport build anjuta -t sid

builds the needed dependencies and anjuta

is this doable?

Honnestly, it seems difficult and dangerous to automate that way.

when you backport a package there are plenty of reasons you should take care
of dependencies, in particular when there's a major upgrade at some point.

It is often the case that you better downgrade some package's build dependency
than automatically download and compile the latest version.

My though in your case would be that you better setup a sid chroot with
automated tools like debootstrap and then try your applications without
having the risk to break the system as a whole..

This should be done manually, it only has to be done once anyway.

You would have to do some kind of recursion here to build all required build
dependencies in the correct order. This might get pretty bloated, just think
of gimp which requires an up to date version of gtk which needs an up to date
version of glib...

 is this doable?

Sure, it is (basically anything that can be expressed by some kind of
algorithm is doable ;-). However, I think it makes much more sense to take the
time (once!) to build a clean backport of the package in testing which can be
uploaded to backports.org, so anybody can benefit from it.

Cheers,

this is meant for users to use not-in-backports situation, like testing

This tool can also be used to backport some packages. With the

I am developing some software and i like to test some newer (like

Quickly checking the discussion archive (which I've linked from the wiki

- discuss a policy change on -policy
- implement a lintian check (a warning for the moment or even less)

Anything else?

I agree with Bas here: I'm all for removing the Debian deviation from
upstream, so please go ahead with that, but raising it further is not
necessarily a useful thing to do. I can easily think of a 6-char password
that is a lot more difficult to guess than an 8 char one.

Especially when the most common response I've seen to a system saying that a
password is not long enough is to start adding easily guessable extension
strings to the password the user already picked, NOT to sit back down and
think up a better, intrinsicly longer password:

e.g.

password: apple
Too short, must be 8 characters!
password: apple123

password: dog
Too short, must be 8 characters!
password: dogabcd

So raising the minimum length doesn't necessarily result in better
passwords -- *especially* not from the kind of user who uses a derivative
of apple or dog[1].

And maybe it's not 1234 or abcd, but I'd wager a lot of people have some
sort of algorithm -- or will quickly make one -- to extend a picked
password without starting from scratch when e.g. a bunch of unimportant web
services demand 15 character passwords. =)

Anyway, poor password pickers will still be poor even if you force them to
long length ones, and good password pickers will still be good even if you
force them to a shorter length. (Remember that there still quite a few
systems out there that have a *maximum* password of 8 characters, so you
have to get creative anyway...)

However, all that said, you have to draw the minimum line somewhere, 8 is a
subjectively better arbitrary default than 6, and it's also good to match
upstream in this case.

[1] Seriously similar to real passwords I've seen in the wild.

That's true. Ideally, we would replace passwords with a better
authentication system, but I'm not sure that's going to be feasible.

If we decide to stick with short passwords (and I'm not opposing that,
Steve's explanation of his strategy made sense to me), we should make
sure that we keep the default install such that network access to the
computer won't be possible. Then, if anyone installs openssh-server or
something, it's their own fault.

(If we wanted to be really evil, we would have openssh-server verify
that a valid password is of high quality before it accepts it.)

Why? Is some kind of i18n process missing or are translations just

I'm unsure how to best combine gettext with the template system used.
(There is libtemplate-multilingual-perl, but that doesn't use gettext)
So I'm currently not able to display the existing translations.

packages.ubuntu.com still runs the code from that repository. But for

* Package name: apparmor
  Version : 2.0.2

* URL : http://en.opensuse.org/Apparmor
* License : GPL
  Description : application security framework

AppArmor is an application security tool designed to provide an
easy-to-use security framework for your applications. AppArmor
proactively protects the operating system and applications from
external or internal threats, even zero-day attacks, by enforcing
good behavior and preventing even unknown application flaws from
being exploited. AppArmor security policies, called profiles,
completely define what system resources individual applications
can access, and with what privileges. A number of default profiles
are included with AppArmor, and using a combination of advanced
static analysis and learning-based tools, AppArmor profiles for
even very complex applications can be deployed successfully in a
matter of hours.

This should trigger the lintian tag md5sums-lists-nonexisting-file, but
lintian.debian.org doesn't see any instances of that tag in the archives.
I'd be very interested in example packages, since it sounds like the
 lintian test may be broken.

I know of a package of the TeX team where they build font files or such,
create the md5sums for them and remove these files from the package, but
leave the md5sums and the entries in lists. In postint they rebuild these
files from those shipped in the package.

The intention is that the package with the files is 60MB and without the
files it is 10MB, IIRC, and it's easy to rebuild them in postinst.

Sorry, I can't remember the name of the package.

Bye, Jörg.

The reason why I'm mailing debian-devel is that I've seen this behavior

Sounds like an issue lintian could catch, so I suggest filing a wishlist

There is none about this in particular, but #53490 (second-oldest bug

But I'm in no hurry to drive such a change from the PAM side. I know that

Right, I know there are going to be use cases where 6 is too long for the
minimum length, and users will need to lower the setting in
/etc/pam.d/common-password. Do you think we need to provide some hook for
these Debian Edu users to change the setting automatically, via preseeding
or otherwise, or do you think users this is a corner case even within Debian
Edu?

fail2ban is an easy way to do this (for ssh and optionally anything
else that people will try to bruteforce.)

Description: bans IPs that cause multiple authentication errors
 Monitors log files (e.g. /var/log/auth.log,
/var/log/apache/access.log) and temporarily or persistently bans
failure-prone addresses by updating existing firewall rules. The
software was completely rewritten at version 0.7.0 and now allows
easy specification of different actions to be taken such as to ban an
IP using iptables or hostsdeny rules, or simply to send a
notification email. Currently, by default, supports ssh/apache/vsftpd
but configuration can be easily extended for monitoring any other ASCII
file. All filters and actions are given in the config files, thus
fail2ban can be adopted to be used with a variety of files and
 firewalls.
