pbuilder and configure

2007-09-19 Thread Atsuhito Kohda
Hi all,

If I understand correctly it is recommended to use pbuilder
for packaging and I've done so when I updated packages recently.
Then I got a bug report that a nice feature was suddenly lost
and I found that configure script failed to find out very common
applications because pbuilder didn't install them.

I added necessary applications to Build-Depends for the moments
but I'd like to know what is a decent (not to say the best) way
to handle this problem?

Thanks in advance, 2007-9-19(Wed)

What you've encountered is something that people mostly consider a feature
of pbuilder. If you didn't have the package build prerequisites listed in
Build-Depends, those features weren't available on any platform other than
the one where you built the packages originally either. pbuilder behaves
(mostly) like the buildd network, so you get the same behavior that users
of other platforms would get.

The solution is indeed to have a proper Build-Depends.

Now, on the question of how to figure out what a proper Build-Depends is,
various people have different techniques. There are some scripts using
strace on configure floating around, for example. I personally prefer to
just read the upstream configure.ac file and see what it looks for.

Also, it is a good idea to disable feature autodetection and enable
wanted compile-time features explicitly, like this:

  ./configure --enable-packager-mode --enable-foo --enable-bar \
 --prefix= ...

Of course, not all packages support packager mode, but some do. Even if
it is not supported, it is a good idea to --enable and --disable stuff
explicitly.

Yes, I know it's a feature of pbuilder and I understand a problem
in other platform than where I built. That's why I uploaded a fixed
version before I asked the question here.
(Sorry my English was so inadequate.)

Okay, so basically I did a correct fix ;-)

One additional question. In case MTA, for example, there are
many candidates including virtual package for Build-Depends.

I guess exim4-daemon-light | mail-transport-agent
will be acceptable. Is this okay?

You could debate the usefulness of that technique, but if the author
prefers to do it that way, I see no reason why we should be deliberately
changing that. If it's clear to a human what email address is meant, just
follow upstream's prefered notation I'd say.

It's lynx-cur and it has an ability to mail so it is

Re: pbuilder and configure

It's lynx-cur and it has an ability to mail so it is
necessary to know what MTA is available, I guess.

Guessing does not help here, figure it out by reading the
configure/Makefile or whatever it is using to build, and patch it so it
doesn't rely on an installed MTA. Instead it should assume sane default
values (like talking smtp to port 25, or using /usr/lib/sendmail to
deliver mails, which is at least provided by exim, postfix and - of
course - sendmail). There are a LOT of mtas out there, and you want to
support them all (or at least the most common MTAs which are shipped
with Debian), right?
In fact I can't see any reason why a program should check for the name
of the avaiable MTA at all (except you're building an extension/... for
this MTA).

Cheers,

Re: How to start porting to a new ARCHITECTURE?

2007-09-19 Thread Michelle Konzack
Hello David,

Am 2007-09-17 19:46:20, schrieb David Given:
You've got two major tasks ahead of you:

 - - port gcc

OK, it seems that parts of gcc went used under Windows...
Maybe it will easy to port it native to Linux.

 - - port the kernel

Since it is a All-In-On-Chip, there is not realy much hardware support
needed. Floppy, CF-Disks as external controlers, USB is On-Chip same
for LAN, serial, ...

 - - cross-compile a basic userland

:-/

For the former, you'll need to write a new gcc backend targeting your
architecture, and then add support to binutils to allow programs to be linked.
This is not easy. gcc's innards tend to drive people mad.

While reading a little bit the gcc documentation, I am realy confuse
WHERE to start and HOW!

Once you have a compiler, you can then port the kernel --- this will require
development hardware with a good debugger (or, preferably, a reliable emulator
with built-in debugger support). You'll be wading neck-deep in the inside of
the kernel, although I gather it's not as bad as it used to be these days.

Now you have both a compiler and a kernel, you can use your compiler to
generate a userland --- as set of basic binaries to get your system up and
running --- and then boot your new system. This isn't too difficult, although
cross-compiling on gcc has its own horrors.

Once you've got it reliably self-hosted, you're most of the way there ---
setting up a basic Debian port is relatively straightforward.

Self-Hosted is my target since I have had MANY horrors with
cross-compiling

I'd suggest looking up a gcc and linux-kernel mailing list and asking there
 for more detailed info.

OK, I am on the LKM, but do you know a suitable gcc MAILINGLIST?
(I can not use NEWSGROUPS over GSM and since I can use E-Mail for
free using iMode... :-)) )

Thanks, Greetings and nice Day

At first you should check what is already available. I wrote a gcc
backend for a small RISC core during my internship. They told me, they
have an assembler. But it only was a hackish perl script. And the
functionality of ld and ar was not implemented at all. So I started
with implementing as, ld and ar. Half a year later, everything worked
fine and there was only one bug in the port I knew of. But I didn't
implement stuff like floating point. Of course, to get a compiler which
is able to compile itself more work is needed. And after that you
can start porting Linux...

start-stop-daemon --exec is incorrect on unionfs systems

2007-09-19 Thread Tzafrir Cohen
Hi

Debian Live is a live CD system based on Debian:
http://debian-live.alioth.debian.org/

Debian-live uses a unionfs system. The root filesystem is squashfs.

Let's look at exim4 on such a system. The init.d script seems to
misbehave:

debian:~# cat /var/run/exim4/exim.pid
5399
debian:~# ls -l /proc/5399/exe
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2007-09-19 18:34 /proc/5399/exe -
/cow/usr/sbin/exim4
debian:~# pgrep -l exim4
5399 exim4
debian:~# /etc/init.d/exim4 stop
Stopping MTA:No /usr/sbin/exim4 found running; none killed.
 exim4_listener.
debian:~# pgrep -l exim4
5399 exim4
debian:~# /etc/init.d/exim4 restart
Stopping MTA for restart:.
Restarting MTA: exim4.
debian:~# pgrep -l exim4
5399 exim4
5466 exim4

/etc/init.d/exim4 run eventually:

start-stop-daemon --stop --oknodo --pidfile /var/run/exim4/exim.pid --oknodo
--retry 30 --exec /usr/sbin/exim4

It has found the PID file. But (from a later invocation of the exim
init.d script):

debian:~# ls -l /proc/5620/exe
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2007-09-19 18:45 /proc/5620/exe - /cow/usr/sbin/exim4

Which means that its executable is not /usr/sbin/exim4 .
start-stop-daemon thinks that this is a new process that happened to get
that same PID later on.

(this is /cow , as I have installed the package on the live system. If
the package was in the squashfs , this would be
/filesystems.squashfs/usr/sbin/exim4 )

What can be done about this?

1. Avoid using --exec . Probably risking some false kills.
2. Ignore the problem, and leave squashfs systems broken.

Any other way out?

Imho dpkg -s (or apt-cache show, ) and dpkg -L are much more useful

out, and that's just too crude to be a real solution.

Too crude? That's a simple command, easily found in a relevant manpage. In
true Unix fashion, its output can be easily piped to other commands. What's

It doesn't catch files created by Maintainer scripts?

Speaking of non-free material which benefits precisely many users, I've

of the original flawed GFDL.

It's been two years since we last heard that correspondence with the
FSF over the GFDL was constructive, and we could soon expect a revised
version that would likely meet the DFSG.

What is the current state of the GFDL fixes?

Description:
 webcalendar - PHP-Based multi-user calendar
Closes: 293646
Changes:
 webcalendar (1.1.5-2) experimental; urgency=low
 .
   * debian/sql/upgrade-{my,pg}sql/1.1.5-2: Enable JavaScript menus when
upgrading from previous versions. These menus are new in the 1.1.*
series and are enabled by default in 1.1.5. However, they were but
were disabled by default in 1.1.2. Since the 1.1.2 version of the
Debian package was never in unstable/testing, we think it is
appropriate to force the setting of the MENU_ENABLED configuration
 variable.
   * debian/sql/upgrade-sqlite/1.1.5-*: Added scripts for upgrading from
1.1.2 when SQLite database was chosen
   * debian/patches/09_user-public-access.dpatch: When viewing the public
calendar, do not show Current User: Public Access in the footer of
the pages, which may be confusing for some users who do not know (or
care) about the WebCalendar concept of user. The Login string is
still shown. Note that this change is moot when enabling the top
 menu. Closes: Bug# 293646.
