Sounds like a good idea, I'd suggest using CollabMaint rather than a

I seems I'll need to clarify this as well, as it's not correct, and has
been brought somewhere else... The rest has already been explained
several times, and I don't think there's any need to be repetitive.

This is not correct. The changes referred to in bug 375711 were
introduced when:

  Wichert reindents configure.c:

Initial version by Wichert of showpkg.c:

New function by Fumitoshi Ukai in archives.c:

Initial version of tarfn.c (git history does not go further and the
ChangeLog is not detailed enough, from the header I assume it was
  Bruce Perens):

I doubt actually this caused any merge conflict, given that those files
had been this way for a long long time.

It does not matter if it was a mistake or not, this kind of change
should have never landed in any unrelated non-official branch mixed
with other stuff. And I disagree that no one would want to change
coding style as I explained in:

The patch in that bug had been partially applied (explained at [0]):

And I guess at this point I should have just closed the bug, but this
was a continuos source of conflict, so leaving it open seemed to be
the less annoying.

I disagree with the rest of the patch[1], which was also wrong (due to
the resulting mixed indentantion), as I explained at:

  [0]

  [1]

I said in [0] that "I think that those changes were done on purpose".

Besides from maintaining a list of [1]UnofficialTools, we
should start thinking about having a shared place with cool scripts
that we could put together to be "team maintained" and kept
up-to-date more frequently, something like a justforfun.debian.net

We can also steal the scripts not frequently updated from

Yes, one of the reasons for those changes was to accomodate the needed
stuff for Solaris and other systems. I've not forgotten this and
it's also on the TODO list. Will get to it before the .17 upload.

If a (char *)0 doesn't work as a pointer argument that's expecting
(int *)0, then calloc or memset of a structure with pointer members
probably won't reliably give you null pointers. The amount of code that
depends on that behavior is *significant*. It's fairly rare to see UNIX
code that doesn't make that assumption.

The only possible exception is if (char *)0 and (int *)0 both use all-zero
bit patterns but are different sizes. I've never heard of an architecture
that did that. (I *have* heard of architectures in common use where a
pointer to data is a different size than a pointer to a function, but
function pointers are very rarely passed to variadic functions.)

I don't see the "major improvement". Why would you want to use this? I
see two reasons:

- There is a real Recommends: relation, but the target package is not
available on some architectures. In this case, excluding them from
the recommends list would hide the bug instead of fixing it.

- In rare cases, I can imagine that some really low-level tool is not
available, especially on different kernels (kfreebsd or hurd, for
example). While this is a legitimate reason, I think it's so rare
that it certainly doesn't count as "major improvement".

This sounds useful, indeed. If you have the coding skills, I think
patches would be appreciated. ;-)

Bug#470795: RFH: apache2 - Co-maintainer wanted

2008-03-13 Thread Stefan Fritsch
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request assistance with maintaining the apache2 package.

The package is not in a bad shape, but I just keep up with new bug reports and
haven't been able to actually reduce the bug count for some time. The other
Apache Team members are currently mostly inactive.

The new co-maintainer(s) should of course have experience as apache user.

This RFH also includes the ssl-cert, apr, and apr-util packages. But those
are less work and have fewer bugs.

I know about kbd building a udeb, and the consequences of that, and I
think that I have enough knowledge about a maintainer’s duties to cope
with kbd’s issues.

[PATCH] debootstrap new options to list and check suite

2008-03-13 Thread Julien Kerihuel
Hi List,

Please find attached a small patch which add new options to debootstrap
script and manpage:

--list-suitelist available debootstrap suites
--check-suite=A check if suite A is supported by debootstrap

These options may be useful to developers willing to have a build system
where they can customize the debootstrap SUITE parameter and perform
sanity check before executing the script (e.g. ./configure
--with-suite=sarge).

The patch also adds --version to the man page.

Cheers,
Julien.

I'm aware of this, however, the cups/X fork is only for the server side.
On the client side there is normally an SSH fork involved, but I'm
working with the freenx people who have a patch to nxproxy so that it
doesn't need nxssh.

These ITPs are for an NX client with the above patches so that openssh
can be used rather than nxssh.

I think I didn't see it on this discussion, but there is also the risk of a
factual fork of dpkg between Ubuntu and Debian, and that would even be
worse..

Suggested improvements for handling Architecture independent packages

2008-03-13 Thread Julian Andres Klode
Dear readers:

I would like to suggest two major improvements related to packages which are
"Architecture: all".

The first thing I want to suggest is the handling of dependencies. When building
a package, you can use "Depends: package [arch1 arch2]" which means that it
depends on package only on the architectures arch1 and arch2. But this only
works for architecture dependent packages. Therefore, I would like to not
process this "command" during the build-time, but do it at the installation
time.

This is especially useful for recommends, since all recommends have to be
available. Without it, the best way is to only suggest the package.

One could also use package | not+ARCHITECTURE, but this results in half-broken
dependencies. And it's more complicated.

I suggested this first in Bug#436733 [1]

The other suggestion [2] is to add a field called "Install-Architecture" to the
control file, listing architectures for which this package should be available.
Another idea is to use "Architecture: all [i386 amd64 ppc]", which seems to be
better [3].

It would be great to add the needed functionality before the release of Lenny,
so we can start using it in Lenny+1.

The second suggested improvement could be used before the release of lenny,
because it would only require changes to dak (and maybe dpkg-dev, lintian). dak
would parse the value of "Architectures" to check for the architectures listed
in "[i386 amd64 ppc]".

When the package is added to the Packages file, the field gets changed to
"Architecture: all". This would be the easiest way.

Regards,

Julian

Just curious:
One of the major complaints about NX (iirc) and the reason why it wasn't
packaged for Debian yet, is that it basically was a fork of the
complete Xorg/Xfree86 sources (which understandably didn't make our
security team happy).
Is nxcl a reimplementation that solves this problem?
Does it allow to implement the NX server as an extension for Xorg?

Cheers,

Right, but note that these are branches that are explicitly advertised

Sure, but keep in mind that RT is intended for coordinating the actual
upload, and not primarily for reporting the bug itself.

Maintainer involvement is always desirable because it's better if
someone familiar with the software prepares the upload. With complex
packages, maintainer involvement is a must.

It's not clear from the bug reports what's causing this regression, so
there's little what we (the security team) can do what other interested
parties can't do better and more quickly.

Not only I can be a sponsor but I will be able to help with the script
part of the package if you need.

However since this package is part of the core of Debian, I prefer your
taking over to be announced first in debian-devel (and thats why I am
sending my reply to debian-devel too).

Let me remind to the readers of debian-devel that currently there are
two console packages in Debian -- kbd and console-tools. Console-tools
has no upstream maintainer and because of this the Debian maintainer of
console-tools has aready tagged several bugs as non-fix. The console
utilities of the installer are entirely based on kbd and not on
console-tools. Because of this kbd needs to be properly maintained.

I requested adopter for this package because it was never my intention
to maintain "kbd". The maintainer of "kbd" is the group "Console
utilities maintainers" and when this group reduced to only one member
(me) I had to take over.

Should the RT also be used for breackage caused by a security update?
E.g. Icedove is pretty broken since the last update:
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=466527
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=465531
Is the security team interested in this kind of information our should
this be handled by the maintainer?
Cheers,

That's interesting. I didn't know that. It's true that my coding
style may be influenced by factors which are no longer relevant.
Normally I prefer to be correct with respect to the specification
rather than conducting extensive research into behaviour of various
systems, whereever possible.

Do you happen to know if Samba also uses NULL to pass an int* to a
stdarg function ? Guillem does that too.

I don't know if there are any plausible machines out there where
int*'s and char*'s have different representations but in fact just the
other day I was having a conversation about how on certain weird
ARMish chips (where pointers address words, not bytes) that would be
one reasonable ABI given the architecture.

Running indent on an existing body of code is a bad idea.

This is done at the beginnings of projects precisely to avoid this
kind of nonsense. If I had written a `coding style' document in the
root of the dpkg tree then Guillem would probably have now felt
entitled to just change it.

What I'm flaming about is that WE STILL DON'T HAVE TRIGGERS !

The _excuse_ that has been given is that the git log was not pretty
enough and they didn't like the formattting.

That's what I did, in Augustt and in October. The third time I did
it I uploaded the result. It got unaccepted because the dpkg team are
more interested in blocking.

I'm not sure how I'm making a mountain out of a molehill.

I'm complaining that Guillem and Raphael have refused for 6 months to
take my code because of complaints which are both trivial and wrong.

Description : keyboard shortcut extension for icedove

Nostalgy adds keyboard shortcuts to change the current folder, to move/copy
selected messages into another folder, to add/remove/view tags; the selection
of the target folder is made through an auto-completion box where you can type
part of the folder name. There are also commands to improve the navigation
 between Thunderbird's three panes

Because you are listed at

   http://www.drive5.com/muscle/

as author of muscle and thus I think you are interested in the
fact that there are projects who have probably reasonable patches
against your program but did this on older versions. If I would
be in your shoes I would try to work together with them to get
reasonable input for my project.

Kind regards and thanks for your quick response

 Andreas.

[Robert and Todd please read below about some issues about muscle]
Everybody: PLease keep the debian-med mailing list in CC. We would like to
build reasonable Debian packages out of a uniform source that contains all
features that are needed and as less bugs as possible. The Debian-Med
mailing list might serve as a common discussion forum to avoid a fork.

On Thu, 14 Feb 2008, Charles Plessy wrote:

I had a very quick look to the sources, and I am wondering if mauve
can work with muscle instead of clustalw. This would solve the licence
problem. However, it needs a specific patch on Muscle. I can try to
submit it to Muscle's upstream if necessary. Otherwise, it may be
possible to build two different binary packages from the same source
pacakge (like vim or centericq).

I would like to have a quick update onto Mauve issues:

  1. Packages for libGenome are just uploaded the day before yesterday.
I expect it to be available at the Debian Mirror soon.
  2. To prepare at least local Mauve packages I continued to package
libClustalW and libMeme (which depends from both) and putted my
 efforts to
  http://people.debian.org/~tille/packages/libclustalw/
 and
  http://people.debian.org/~tille/packages/libmeme/
Where the later one is also in our SVN because it can be distributed
easily once the preoconditions (either a clean libClustalW or
the libMuscle replacement mentioned above are available.
  3. My next step should be
  http://gel.ahabs.wisc.edu/mauve/source/mauve_2.1.1/

Aaron, a new library tarball libMUSCLE-1.0.0.tar.gz occured at this location
for version 2.1.1 and while you used version 1.0.0 you mention in the file
AUTHORS:
It contains bugfixes and new features to the original 3.6 code. But
upstream now has version 3.7. So I _really_ like your atempt to build a
library and I would love to convince the muscle authors to build their
binary linked against this library, but I'm afraid by the current approach
we might end up with a fork. :-(

Could you please clarify things. My prefered way to go would be:

  1. Take the latest Muscle upstream source (including patches for
 gcc 4.3)
  2. Choose a new version number.
  3. Change the build process using automake / libtools to build
a dynamic and static library from muscle code and link the
 executable against this library.
  4. Link Mauve binary against this library.

I'd volunteer to provide any help that might be needed but please try to
avoid confusing your users by using different versions that have good
chances to drift away from each other.

Aaron, just for the sake of my private packaging: Do I understand things
right that your libMUSCLE is a replacement for libClustalW and I might be
able to drop libClustalW in favour of libMUSCLE? My plan is to work on Mauve
Debian packages in my private repository until the issues above will be
solved nicely.

Kind regards and please remember to keep the Debian-Med list in CC to have a
record for all other potential packagers in our crew. (I'm happily not
alone ;-))

  Andreas.
