The new USB Option WWAN modem device support a CDROM device, which holds

Therefore the firmware of the WWAN modem announce during the USB enumeration

This device is now called ZERO-CD.

ozerocdoff is a solution to switch off the ZERO-CD and allow the modem to
be a modem.

Initial packaging work can be found at:

Thanks for that reference, I wasn't aware that the goals of the FHS
had been expanded after the first few releases.

> Maybe you were thinking about the FSSTND?

The one grew out of the other. Anyway, I'm glad to know my
recollection of the FHS's purpose wasn't faulty, just (according to
the history presented there) superseded by later changes.

What reference do you have for that? My recollection of the FHS
purpose from its inception was that it was limited to GNU/Linux, just
as now.

Reiviving the FHS is great! Something that is bothering me a bit,
though, is that historically it seemed to try to cater to Unix in
general, not only Linux, even if most of the participants were coming
from the Linux world. So hosting it under the LSB auspices might deter
other Unix vendors to consider it or get involved, which would seem like
a regression. Maybe hosting it on a more neutral place would be better?

But will the legacy vendors make even more changes to make it even
easier to move off their platforms?

Thanks for this information. The package just needs to drop the
conflict, it's buggy anyway.

Additionally, maybe the package should be removed altogether (CC'ing
-qa). It has popcon 5, and hasn't seen a real upload for 6 years.

Cheers,

Old bug in ppmtofb is quite important

2009-02-19 Thread Jaap Boender
At the Mancoosi project (http://www.mancoosi.org), we've determined that this
bug causes 1591 other packages not to be installable if ppmtofb is installed
(and vice versa; ppmtofb is not installable if any of those 1591 packages are
installed).

The explanation: since ppmtofb conflicts with any python version strictly
higher than 2.4, any package that depends on python-2.4 will not be
installable together with ppmtofb, hence the 1591 packages (a full list, with
for every package the dependency path that links it to python is available at
http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~boender/ppmtofb_conflicts.txt ).

To determine this, we've used a tool that finds strong conflicts in a
distribution, i.e. pairs of packages that are installable separately, but not
together under any circumstances. In this case, ppmtofb is installable, all
the python packages are installable, but they can never be installed together.

The tool groups the conflicts by 'root conflict'; if two packages have a
strong conflict, there is always a 'real' conflict that causes this; in our
case, the conflict between python and ppmtofb. In this way, we can see that
there are 1591 strong conflicts caused by the conflict between python and
ppmtofb.

I do not see a libibumad tarball there, I did find OFED-1.4.tgz which contained
a SRPM for it... if this is the only way upstream distributes these libraries,
please suggest to them that it is better if they publish normal tarballs.

I have absolutely no clue what this does, except that it has something to do
with InfiniBand. What is MAD? What is OpenSM? What functionality does this
library provide? Also drop "OpenFabrics Alliance" from the short description.
If you want to mention it, do it in the long description.
