And I suppose Marco must remove all /usr dependencies from everything

 This would be a lot more
 productive than acting as a lemming following every stupid decision
 of RedHat, and in the process give us choices in how we setup things

 early boot (recovery) system in / without it).

The initramfs is your early boot system.

* Package name : ted
Version : 2.22
Upstream Author : Mark de Does m...@mdedoes.xs4all.nl

* License : GPL
Description : lightweight .DOC editor

This was included in previous versions of Debian, but removed, *I believe*,
for the reason that it was thought to be unmaintained... The current
version has now switched to using GTK+ and was released five months ago. (
previous version is over seven years )

The only valid .DOC editors in Debian are LibreOffice and AbiWord, which
are both somewhat bloated (especially LibreOffice, as it's in Java) ... I
believe Ted is a nice lightweight alternative.

 I guess that really depends on what non-graceful breakage means. I
 personally assume that not installing recommended packages can mean that
 for example the default configuration of the package does not work at
 all and the user has to write their own configuration to make the
 software work.

.. as long as there is some indication that the problem is a missing
Recommends.

devscripts does a lot of (much appreciated) work for this and other
packages don't necessarily have to go that far but there should be an
obvious statement (in the package description if short, in the
README.Debian / man page if longer) that error foo means that you
either install the recommended bar or adjust your configuration by
doing baz. That would be something close to graceful breakage.

The kind of handling done by devscripts would be nice to see in other
packages. Lack of such handling could also be seen as a bug in the
package and does not mean that the package must Depend on something
which is not directly necessary. Fix the bug, not mangle the packaging
to workaround the bug.

I haven't allowed Recommends to be installed by default since it
became the default - without problems so far. Makes me think that other
maintainers aren't risking the default implementation being broken when
a Recommends: is missing or else implementing something akin to the
devscripts approach.

(Emdebian simply doesn't implement Recommends. emgrip (1))

Please don't distort other people's opinions to make rhetorical points.
We've had multiple discussions on this topic, and very few people were
expressing the opinion that mime-support was better than the XDG MIME
system, let alone awesome. They were, rather, pointing out that they
use a bunch of applications that don't USE the XDG MIME system, and
therefore its theoretical benefits aren't actually useful to them right
now.

I think there's general agreement that in an ideal world everything would
use the XDG MIME system or something equally rich and not the old metamail
system. But we can't fix every piece of software that we use overnight,
particularly given that the conversion from a metamail-style system to the
XDG MIME system is not exactly a trivial endeavor for any piece of
software that uses MIME heavily.

That's the reason why people are pursuing generating the metamail-style
database *from* the XDG MIME specification so that we can use a richer
specification in as many places as possible but fall back on the previous
standard for applications that still use it.

And still, it's not clear why the author can't just use the standard

 Michael Biebl bi...@debian.org writes:

  Imho moving pam modules around is just wasted (maintainer) time.
  A much more sensible approach is to just lift the /-vs-/usr restriction.

 We just had a long discussion about this. I think it's fairly safe to say
 that while there are a number of people who think the distinction is not
 particularly meaningful, there are others who still use it for various
 reasons, and there's no consensus for doing this right now.

Much of this lack of consensus comes down to a misunderstanding of the
actual parameters.

The Fedora implementation does not require us to drop support for /usr as a
separate filesystem. It only requires us to ensure /usr is mounted before
init is started.

 - /usr as a separate filesystem mounted from an initramfs: supported
 - /usr on the root filesystem: supported
 - /usr on a separate filesystem without the use of an initramfs: not
   supported... and no discernable user demand for this.

My knee-jerk reaction to the Fedora proposal had been that it was sick and
wrong and would cause unacceptable breakage for users on upgrades if Debian
adopted the same plan. However, I struggled to formulate a concrete
scenario where losing support for that last configuration would actually
make a difference.

No one in the various threads on debian-devel has presented such a scenario.
They've all been arguing the straw man that /usr as a separate fs is not
supported, which is not what's on the table.

I brought this topic up for discussion at the last Ubuntu Developer Summit
as well; there again, no one was able to come up with a real use case that
is not handled by the Fedora design.

So Ubuntu is intending to follow suit on this and mount /usr from the
initramfs. It's just not worth the effort to do otherwise - and up to this
point, Ubuntu actually has done the work to make sure /lib was
self-contained for boot, so we do have some experience there with how much
work is actually required (and btw, some experience with how quick Debian
maintainers are to pick up the related fixes, since many of the changes were
forwarded to Debian and sat for quite a while without being merged). It's
not just the one-time effort to change the packaging, either; remember that
the *-dev* package has to always go to /usr/lib even if the *runtime*
library goes to /lib, which causes some maintenance overhead in splitting
the files this finely (i.e., debian/rules basically needs some horrible code
to re-make symlinks dynamically). As I recall, e2fsprogs and util-linux in
particular have required some real ongoing effort to maintain this split
correctly, and I've seen plenty of packages getting this wrong and putting
.so symlinks in /lib (where ld doesn't see them!), or worse, .a files,
defeating the purpose of a small / partition.

This, plus the extensive upstream use (IMHO misuse) of software installed to
/usr as part of udev rules, means that in reality an ever increasing number
of libraries need to be shipped in /lib to properly handle bootstrapping the
mount of /usr using only the contents of /.

In contrast, if we use an initramfs to handle mounting of /usr, we move all
the complexity out of the packaging and instead pull components into the
small initramfs only as needed. As far as I've been able to determine,
there really is no downside to the user from making this switch.

previous is still a very young project and many features are
still missing. Packaging previous for Debian will make the
emulator available to a broader audience and hopefully gain

Discussion of uscan enhancement 1 (Was: uscan enhancement take 3: script hook)

2012-08-30 Thread Andreas Tille
Hi,

I repost some extract from some private discussion about the
Files-Excluded enhancement of uscan where Nicolas Boulenguez found
some issues. (Nicolas, I hope you don't mind if I quote some of
your non-private remarks in public.)

Nicolas problem is mainly that if you specify

Files-Excluded: foo

and foo is a directory nothing is removed because the algorithm
requires to specify rather

Files-Excluded: foo/

I wonder what you might think about this.

On Thu, Aug 30, 2012 at 02:32:56AM +0200, Nicolas Boulenguez wrote:
  I can not confirm that anything is removed if you only specify
   Files-Excluded: foo
  (and your example below does not provide a testcase for this statement)

 You are right. Apologizes. I was confused because I could never
 imagine that two behaviours were intended depending on the existence
 of an internal slash.

Well, the '/' simply marks a directory - that's all.

 Assume that a and b are directories, if I understand well, the
 current behaviour is to recursively remove a/b/, a/b and a/ but
 to ignore a. I do not find that intuitive, and would suggest to
 document it clearly.

Could you suggest a wording which fits the requirement of clearly
documented. It is required that there is distinction between files and
directories (see the discussion on debian-devel, for instance [1] and
[2]). If I would feed 'a' to the removal algorithm it could simply
happen, that a file c/a would be removed as well but it should not.

 If you keep it, the implementation could avoid
 splitting and grepping twice:

 foreach (split /\s+/, $data-{files-excluded}) {
if (grep {/\//}) {
 # delete trailing '/' because otherwise find -path will fail
 s?/+$?? ;
 # use rm -rf to enable deleting non-empty directories
 `find $main_source_dir -path $main_source_dir/$_ -print0 |
 xargs -0 rm -rf`;
 } else {
 `find $main_source_dir -type f -name $_ -delete`;
 };
 };

 In the specific case of Files-Excluded, the packager is supposed to
 know well whether (s)he removes a file or a directory,

Yes, exactly this is the sense. The maintainer is supposed to know what
he is doing. That's intended. :-)

I could imagine to do a

  if (grep {/[^\/]\/[^\/]/}) {

to make sure the slash is *inside* the string because if it is only at the
beginning or the end we can safely files and directories.

 and I would
 rather imitate rm -rf, which accepts a/b/, a/b, a/ and a:

  foreach (split /\s+/, $data-{files-excluded}) {
  # delete trailing '/' because otherwise find -path will fail
  s?/+$?? ;
  # use rm -rf to enable deleting non-empty directories
  `find $main_source_dir -path $main_source_dir/$_ -print0 |
 xargs -0 rm -rf`;
  };

 Did I miss something important?

In this case you can not specify something like

*.jar

for jar files hanging around in lib/*.jar or so. The code which tries
to distinguish between files and pathes enables removing files in all
directories.

 In any case, you may want to double-quote $main_source_dir as you
 did for $main_source_dir/$_, in case the parent directory name
 contains a space.

Right. Commited and pushed.

Hope this clarifies things a bit.

Thanks for your testing

 Andreas.

Supporting /etc on a separate filesystem from / violates half a dozen

Yes, even if that is not simple in every way.

If it's about just adding more bugs without bringing anything good

But as long as:
1. It breaks nothing for existing installations (i.e. does not

2. It has something, that is not provided by other packages,

3. There's someone willing to maintain it and fix the bugs.

As long as all 3 points are true — why not? ;)
I would apply these points to every ITP, not just openrc.

PS: IMHO, saying things like Linux is not about choice and
Debian is not about being universal just scares maintainers

If people become happy fixing bugs in their own toy ports —
let them work! More happy people is good for debian, isn't it?

 Could you suggest a wording which fits the requirement of clearly

Here is the meaning of Files-Excluded patterns, as I understand from
the perl code at
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=users/tille/devscripts.git;a=blob;f=scripts/uscan.pl;hb=bb686d032543d8ba8c5cd9c36ff8c2d9c3310761#l1493

 If $pattern contains no slash, then
  (A) execute `find $main_source_dir -type f -name $pattern -delete`
   That is, remove all *files* in all subdirectories whose *base name* match.
 Else
  (B) remove the trailing slash from $pattern, if present
  (C) execute `find $main_source_dir -path $main_source_dir/$pattern
   -print0 | xargs -0 rm -rf`
   That is, remove all *files or subdirectories* whose *full path* match.

Jonas says that this imitates Files patterns, but
http://dep.debian.net/deps/dep5/#files-field mentions

 Patterns match pathnames that start at the root of the source tree.
 Thus, Makefile.in matches only the file at the root of the tree,
 but */Makefile.in matches at any depth.

I understand that matching depends only on the existence of the path,
not on it being a file or a directory. So
- foo should match foo, even if a directory.
- foo should not match bar/foo, even if a file.
- foo/ should never match, even if foo is a directory.
In short, I would only expect (C) as the implementation.

 It is required that there is distinction between files and
 directories (see the discussion on debian-devel, for instance [1] and
 [2]).
 [1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2012/08/msg00512.html
 [2] http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2012/08/msg00449.html

In [2], Jonas says I believe it is better to..., but does not
explain why.

  If I would feed 'a' to the removal algorithm it could simply
 happen, that a file c/a would be removed as well but it should not.

With (C), the a pattern will not remove the c/a file.

 In this case you can not specify something like
 *.jar
 for jar files hanging around in lib/*.jar or so. The code which tries
 to distinguish between files and pathes enables removing files in all
 directories.

With (C), the *.jar pattern will remove lib/foo.jar and usr/lib/bar.jar.

This suggestion is unrelated, but I repeat is because it was hidden in
the huge quoted mail. If we keep the current meaning, I suggest that
the implementation at
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=users/tille/devscripts.git;a=blob;f=scripts/uscan.pl;hb=bb686d032543d8ba8c5cd9c36ff8c2d9c3310761#l1493
avoid splitting and grepping twice.

foreach (split /\s+/, $data-{files-excluded}) {
if (grep {/\//}) {
# delete trailing '/' because otherwise find -path will fail
s?/+$?? ;
# use rm -rf to enable deleting non-empty directories
`find $main_source_dir -path $main_source_dir/$_ -print0 |

Are they needed to mount other filesystems? Are they needed for `root`
user to log in? If not, why bother? ;) (see a long explanation below)

 A much more sensible approach is to just lift the /-vs-/usr restriction.
 The obvious way is to not use a separate /usr anymore or simply mount
 /usr via the initramfs.

It doesn't really solve a problem, it just turns one problem into
another one. I'll try to put some details in.

It was long time ago, there may be some mistakes in my explanation,
please correct me if they are.

Many (most?) major successes in IT history were about inventing a good
standard communication interface to do things. IBM PC was successful
because it could be assembled from standard easily accessible components,
and was easy to upgrade by just replacing those components with newer
ones. That worked so good because there were standard interfaces for
devices (ISA, PCI, AGP, etc).

Similar things happened to the systems, installed on IBM PC. For many years
typical OS booting looked very simple: BIOS just executes first 512 bytes
of HDD (MBR, aka Master Boor Record) and it did not care what those bytes
do. That simple idea allowed to install any OS, one just had to wrote its
OS loader into MBR. And that made it possible to write many different OSes,
which brought more success to BIOS approach and IBM PC.

Then the dual(multi)-boot idea arose. To make it possible to install several
systems there came boot loaders (I've seen some ancient DOS-time boot
managers but don't remember their names any more). They also worked for
UNIXes (and linux). Boot loader just started OS kernel and did not care what
it's going to do next.

POSIX was so great that it allowed a great idea of network file systems.
Each machine did not have to contain everything locally any more, it could
just have a bare minimum, and mount everything else from a local server.
For linux it meant that kernel mounts a small root partition, which in turn
mounts everything else.

Kernel, obviously had to reach its root partition. Thus all the disk
controllers drivers and filesystem modules had to be built into the kernel.
When one wanted to change disk controller he had to rebuild the kernel,
otherwise kernel could not get to root filesystem. That was not good, so
initrd came to the rescue. It was basically a small root-like image, it's
only goal was to help kernel reach the root partition (which could mount
everything else anyway).

All this turns into a standard boot sequence:
1. BIOS runs boot loader
2. Boot loader boots kernel (optionally with initrd/initramfs)
3. Kernel mounts root partition (/)
4. Root partition mounts everything else (/usr, /var, /home, /srv, /opt...)
5. Then all the programs are started
And each of these steps appeared for a reason.

This standard boot sequence brought a great flexibility and allowed people
to turn their systems into whatever they need. Separation between steps was
very clear:
* Things that might be needed to mount other filesystems belong to /.
* Things needed to reach / belong to initrd.
* If something does not mount, admin must be able to log in and check/fix
things (that's why /root is not /home/root).
That allowed a small (even read-only) root partition that should probably
never break because of power outage, which is good for servers.

Everything was good. The problem came from the Internet and network-mounted
filesystems. Modern networks allow to mount filesystems using nfs/samba,
and an Internet connection to do that could be brought up with help of such
things as network manager, wpa_supplicant, usb_modeswitch, and so on. So
the problem is that if we continue to literally follow that separation
(things that might be needed to mount other filesystems belong to /)
we should put more and more software to /, thus defeating the purpose of
good small root partition.

And here comes the question: where to put new programs, to / or somewhere
else (/usr, or maybe /opt)? Things were even worse because almost nobody
remembers anymore what this separation was used for.

Then a radical suggestion appeared: since nobody remembers why it was done
that way, change the historical sequence and merge #4 into #3, by having
initramfs mount not just root partition but also mount /usr (and then even
move /s?bin to /usr). But it does not really solves the problem. It just
turns the question what should be a part of the root partition into
question what should be a part of initramfs.

This approach has an advantage: initramfs can be generated dynamically, so
one can dynamically rebuild it including required network stuff there. But
it also have major disadvantage — it's

Changes:
 munin (2.0.6~git-1) experimental; urgency=low
 .
   * 2.0.6 is actually unreleased still, this is based on the current git
 commit 6183662. The following fixes are included:
 - munin-node: more secure state file handling, introducing a new plugin
   state directory root, owned by uid 0. Then each plugin runs in its own
   UID plugin state directory, owned by the said UID. (Closes: #684075),
   (Closes: #679897), closes CVE-2012-3512.
 - munin-cgi-graph: ignore @ARGV to fix CVE-2012-3513 (Closes: #684076),
   thanks to Helmut Grohne hel...@subdivi.de
 - munin-cron: call munin-graph with --cron argument (Closes: #685343)
 - Master/Node.pm: fix _node_read_fast() to accept all valid returns
   (Closes: #686089) and _do_connect() to not use an uninitialized
   variable. (Closes: #686090)
 - munin-async: make spoolread less restrictive about (valid) plugin names
   (Closes: #686093)
   * Update Location and Scriptalias in shipped apache.conf to reflect changes
 introduced upstream in 64dfec73 coming in 2.0.6. This fixes a regression
 introduced in fixing #682869.
