There is no significant API change; this just shortens the version string and marks the start of the third decade of Linux. Are we sure that the change won't be reverted later in the RC cycle? This change will break a lot of software that rely on detecting the kernel version to make some decisions. Then it was broken already. Maybe the 3.0.0 could be released as 2.6.40 to avoid unnecessary breakages? I would strongly oppose doing such renumbering in Debian. It is possible that Linus changes the version back to that, but I doubt it. We could delay uploading it to unstable for a while if this is necessary to allow time for fixes to userland. (But I do not want to wait for the many OOT modules which will undoubtedly break.) Ben. Re: PPAs for Debian
I too believe PPA for Debian is a must have, I personally was thinking of making my own repository where I would store packages before having them pushed into Debian, even if it was for experimental. Putting packages on Ubuntu PPA just doesn't feel right, thus I fully support this idea and would even help with realization of the same if the time allows me. Re: squeeze-updates during Squeeze installation
I also saw this error message but only under special circumstances. I believe when I installed from a DVD and selected to not use a mirror. Yes, this is how to run into this error. It's still somewhat disturbing. Maybe we should keep an empty stable archive on volatile.debian.org in the mean time. Either that or how possible would to it be to make some kind of redirection? I have just read a Debian 6 review[0] with the same (and other) suggestion for improvement in the installer. Maybe someone wants to take a look. Hauke [0] http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2011/02/14/debian-6-review/ I agree, changes could definitely be made on the installer. Re: Invitation to the BSP in Mönchengladbach (Germany), 22-24 January 2010
I'm definitely interested in participating! One question tho, since I'm from Bosnia, what other activities (perhaps involving Debian) could I be involved in during this whole week, since I wouldn't come to Germany just for two days ... suggestions? Share :) Adnan On Wed, Dec 2, 2009 at 3:27 PM, Bernd Zeimetz b...@debian.org wrote: -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, to help Debian freeze[1], there will be a Bug-Squashing-Party in Mönchengladbach, Germany on the weekend of 22-24 January, 2010. It will be held in the office of the German Open-Source-Support-Center at credativ GmbH[2]. Even if you are not a Debian developer, but are interested in helping Debian to get all the open release critical bugs fixed, you're welcome at the BSP. There will be enough developers around to sponsor your NMUs. Some more information about BSPs and RC-Bugsquashing can be found at [3] and [4]. Targets for the BSP are: * Take care of bugs found by piuparts[5]. * Help the ipv6 release goal by adding ipv6 support to programs which do not support it yet. There is a list of bugs to work on, but continue to file new ipv6-related bugs if you find them - and fix them! * Find obsolete and unmaintained packages in testing/unstable and file RoQA removal bugs. Coordination for the BSP is done on the wiki page[6], where you'll also find transport and accommodation details. Mönchengladbach is located about 30km west of Düsseldorf and 50km north-west of Cologne. If you need accommodation please add yourself to the list on the wiki page as soon as possible. Re: libswt and eclipse
Adrian, Are you planning to adopt both azureus and swt-gtk, or just swt-gtk? Adnan On Thu, 2009-06-25 at 15:12 -0400, Adrian Perez wrote: Ok, I was expecting to upload it later, but since I got the answers from the maintainer, then I'll upload it for weekend review to mentors.debian. I know there's work to do still, but I've tested the packages, they install-purge gracefully, are almost lintian-clean (besides the fact that gives me debhelper-no-misc-depends). I've made a few hello-world-kind of program using SWT without any compile or runtime errors. Please keep an eye on it. I'll be working on it at the weekend too, so if you could give your points earlier, that would be great. Adnan Hodzic was also interested in adopting swt-gtk and azureus. If you like, you could collaborate with him. Thanks for considering adopting swt-gtk and azureus. They could use a maintainer that uses Azureus more frequently than I do. Cheers, Shaun 2009/6/25 Adrian Perez adrianperez@gmail.com: Thanks for your reply. I know I could upload to mentors. But since it's quite ethical to request the maintainer's feedback before adopting a package, I was asking because I have no way of establishing contact with him, since I've tried a lot in the last days. I'm currently doing some refinements, and planning to add the x86_64 and ppc versions as arch-patches. I think the previous maintainer could sponsor it, but because he is probably off, then I should RFS it. Thank you all.
