Re: Debian is switching to EGLIBC
Aurelien Jarno aurel...@aurel32.net writes: Michael Prokop a écrit : * Josselin Mouette j...@debian.org wrote: Le mercredi 06 mai 2009 =C3=A0 18:18 +0200, Michael Prokop a =C3=A9crit : Where did this decission (and the discussion around it) took place? I can't find anything neither on debian-devel nor on debian-devel-glibc. Do all maintainers need your approval before switching to another branch for packages they maintain? No. Though I think that for essential packages like libc it could be worth a public discussion. Should we also ask permission to everybody before uploading a new version of the libc? Of course, not :-). But this one sounds like a big change on the face of it and raises concerns (lsb, compatibility with other distros etc). Obviously the fact that the upload has happened means that the Debian libc team does not consider that a risk. Even so, I belive a announcement about the planned change to d-d and d-d-a would've been a good idea (as opposed to learning about it on slashdot). Frankly there is far less difference between GLIBC 2.9 and EGLIBC 2.9 than between GLIBC 2.9 and GLIBC 2.10. I guess the concern is not what's the difference today but rather what's the roadmap down the line. Given the EGLIBC position statement EGLIBC strives to be source and binary compatible with GLIBC this may not be a concern. Again, a posting to the mailing lists would've cleared the air. I could also have just taken the EGLIBC patches and put them in debian/patches, no one would have noticed. That's probably true :-). It was installed about 3.5 years ago. How much RAM/CPU does the machine have? How fast are the disks? I have a Athlon X2 3800+ with 2Gig of RAM. To install a single package it takes 10s real time. I have a SATA 250GB disk. I have ~1500 packages installed. On a 2.8 Ghz P4 with 512MB RAM (~1800 packages) it does take 20-30 seconds. I also note that dselect eats up 40+ MB on this second machine and really slows down the machine during an install. -- Ganesan Rajagopal -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I don't think so (except maybe udev, but servers can happily work without udev). What is the reason to start nfs from one time initialization subsystem? Portmap and nfs can be started in runlevel 2 to 5. That's debatable. However current Debian policy as per /etc/rcS.d/README is = The following sequence points are defined at this time: * After the S40 scripts have executed, all local file systems are mounted and networking is available. All device drivers have been initialized. * After the S60 scripts have executed, the system clock has been set, NFS filesystems have been mounted (unless the system depends on the automounter, which is started later) and the filesystems have been cleaned. = Besides NFS, if your entire access to the network requires IPsec, you cannot even ssh outside the box unless racoon sets up a tunnel. It's really a critical service in that sense. Ganesan -- Ganesan Rajagopal -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: racoon and bug 372665
Milan == Milan P Stanic [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: README says that in the /etc/rcS.d/ should go scripts which are executed once during boot. In debian policy manual rcS.d is mentioned only once in section 9.3.4, but from short description it is not clear could the daemons be started from scripts in that directory. Some daemons _need_ to be started from /etc/rcS.d (udev for example). Another good example is portmap for nfs. If you're mounting nfs volumes over IPsec then, racoon needs to start to setup the IPsec tunnel. Yesterday I installed racoon but not configured it and on the next reboot it blocked start-up process. I had to manually remove /etc/rcS.d/S40racoon to boot machine. This should not happen. What do you mean blocked the start-up process? My mistake. I should say boot process. Sorry for inconvenience. I understood that. I am still not clear why it would interfere with the boot process. That was with racoon patched to work under runit (or other supervisor software like daemontools). When I reinstalled racoon from testing it doesn't block booting process. But that gives mi a hint. If some daemon process could not be started (for whatever reason) it should not block the booting. racoon should come up just fine even if it fails to negotiate any tunnels. Any way, the default policy does not even setup any tunnels. Let me know if you're still stuck; I can try your patches in a test setup with runit when I find some time. Re: Packages violating policy 8.2
Goswin von Brederlow [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: If the library is only internal then this falls under 10.2 I think, which is only a SHOULD diretive. You're right. This falls under 10.2 and as I mentioned before, moving the library to a subdirectory of /usr/lib is a pain. The bug though sounds like Kilian Krause is asking you to make the library public so he can link against it. Do you ship a shlibs file? From the bug you aren't shipping a *.so link for linking which is correct for an internal library. The library is an internal library and will not be made public. I'll tag the bug wont-fix. Re: Packages violating policy 8.2
Manoj Srivastava [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I am not sure the sections need clarification, inasmuch as they do not really apply to setools. I might clarify that 8.2 is meant for packages that provide shared libraries for general use by other package developers, and it implies a certain level of assurance that the rug shall not be yanked out from under the aforementioned developers feet. Manoj, I have a package (ipsec-tools) which has a similar situation to setools and already has a bug filed for it (See #314981). I considered moving the concerned shared libraries into the plugin directory because these shared libraries were only for the ipsec-tools binaries and not for general use. That would need lots of unnecessary changes to the makefiles, probably fiddling with the dreaded RPATH etc. So, I think a clarification will be nice. Re: python version?
Andreas Barth [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: An upload of python-defaults switching to 2.4 has been repeatedly asked during the last months, and it was ignored by the maintainer. I'm not aware of anything preventing this upload currently. The maintainer is not ignoring it, but the transition needs to have some issues fixed first. (And if you want to discuss aboutt hat, please leave -release out of the discussion. :) The last time this came up in, the majority view was to transition to 2.4 as default the old way rather than keeping it pending for so long. Re: idea for project machines
Christoph Berg [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I was ranting about that on irc before, and was told that this is 1) considered to be a security risk and 2) not worth the effort. The additional concern I had was that an automatic solution would put less load on DSA. How about providing this access only in a Xen guest? I know we don't have Xen enabled kernels in the official repository yet, but this seems to be a feasible approach in the near future. Bartosz == Bartosz Fenski aka fEnIo [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I would prefer to be maintainer of the well known distribution which *doesn't* bump versions only for the fun of it. Exactly. This time I think it would have been justified. Consider * A new installer * Linux Kernel 2.6 * Gnome 2.8 * KDE 3.3 * glibc 2.3.2 * Several new architectures 4.0 would be justified. I know that for most people numbers have some magic meaning, but please can we try to provide stable OS by its quality and not version number? Calling sarge 4.0 won't make it better. It won't, but it would (rightly) indicate that it's a major upgrade from 3.1. Re: free accounts on a Debian sarge server
Sam == Sam Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: We are offering free accounts on a Debian sarge server, including ssh, vnc/X11, web, email, rsync, svn, darcs, ultra-fast internet access and many more services to come - basically we're happy to set up whatever services you might want. We also offer some free human services, i.e. technical support, web design, programming and mentoring. Nice :-). What hardware? I'd like access to some ppc64 hardware. Debian ppc machines all seem to be ppc32.
