It might be possible to rename the binary and symlink "drive" to it, which
would allow you to give the binary name over easier

I don't know the exact way, but you can do it with some debian/rules magic.
What's the issue with patching the non-affected arches?

The package infernal has also dropped i386 support for this reason. Using
it's example, this can cause issues for downstreams with i386 arch:all
builders. Just something to consider

XFCE is short of maintainers, both upstream and debian, but 4.12 is
expected to be released sometime in the next 6 months. That said,
everything both debian and upstream is stable, and a number of 4.11
"development release" packages are able to be uploaded to experimental
if more people come onboard to help with the resultant bugs.
