Re: responsibility for iptables bug
2009/9/15 Marco d'Itri m...@linux.it: On Sep 14, jida...@jidanni.org wrote: LB You could file this a a wishlist bug report against the iptables LB package, and see if the maintainer wish to add this file (or a larger LB /etc/sysctl.d/iptables.conf with some sane defaults). What makes you believe that the kernel defaults are not sane? This is an extra feature which is not required by most people, has a computational and memory cost and should not be enabled unless needed. Prey tell, what is wrong with maintainers of for example iptables, providing a conffile with samples (which may even be commented out) which they can reference to in their documentation, where they comment on the different settings? This is what we do with /etc/sysctl.conf today. And I still think a wishlist bug against iptables is appropriate and would have helped Jidanni, had it existed. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-devel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#522225: ITP: cpm -- Console password manager using PGP-encryption
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Lars Bahner bah...@debian.org * Package name: cpm Version : 25beta~beta1 Upstream Author : Harry Brueckner harr...@mm.st * URL : http://www.harry-b.de/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=harry:cpm * License : GPL Programming Lang: C Description : Curses based password manager using PGP-encryption This program is a ncurses based console tool to manage passwords and store them public key encrypted in a file - even for more than one person. The encryption is handled via GnuPG so the programs data can be accessed via gpg as well, in case you want to have a look inside. The data is stored as as zlib compressed XML so it's even possible to reuse the data for some other purpose. The software uses CDK (ncurses) to handle the user interface, libxml2 to store the information, the zlib library to compress the data and the library GpgMe to encrypt and decrypt the data securely. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (x86_64) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-devel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#339026: ITP: sguil -- Realtime network security monitor
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Lars Bahner [EMAIL PROTECTED] * Package name: sguil Version : 0.5.3 Upstream Author : Bamm Visscher [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : http://www.sguil.org/ * License : QPL Description : Realtime network security monitor Upstream is willing to change license if I can convince the authors of sancp and barnyard to do likewise. Sguil (pronounced sgweel) is built by network security analysts for network security analysts. Sguil's main component is an intuitive GUI that provides realtime events from snort/barnyard. Bug#339025: ITP: sancp -- network security tool designed to collect statistical information from network traffic
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Lars Bahner [EMAIL PROTECTED] * Package name: sancp Version : 1.6.1 Upstream Author : John Curry [ john dot curry at metre dot net ] * URL : http://www.metre.net/sancp.html * License : QPL Description : network security tool designed to collect statistical information from network traffic I am querying upstream for a new license. This is a network security tool designed to collect statistical information regarding network traffic, as well as, collect the traffic itself in pcap format, all for the purpose of: auditing, historical analysis, and network activity discovery. Rules can be used to distinguish normal from abnormal traffic and support tagging connections with: rule id, node id, and status id. From an intrusion detection standpoint, every connection is an event that must be validated through some means. Sancp uses rules to identify, record, and tag traffic of interest. 'Tagging' a connection is a new feature since v1.4.0 Connections ('stats') can be loaded into a database for further analysis. Sancp rules control three types of logging for a connection: pcap, stats, and realtime 'pcap' refers to packet data collected on the connection in tcpdump format, 'stats' refers to a single line summary of an entire connection once it is 'closed' 'realtime' is a snapshot of 'stats' based on the initial packet, for immediate reporting. Both 'stats' and 'realtime' contain a number of fields used for recording packet statistics, TCP flags, p0f data, and other vitals about how we handle the connection. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. version numbering
Hi, Please CC: me as I am not on this list! As I upgraded rscheme today to the final non-beta version I ran into problems with the version numbering. Eg: old version (0.7.3.3.b30-1) in unstable = new version (0.7.3.3-1) Upstream names the betas for 0.7.3.3 as 0.7.3.3.b1-b30 - as you no doubt already guessed. So now that there is no beta-versioning, the installer sees this as a lower number. I could of cource number the package as 0.7.3.3.c or 0.7.3.3.final, but I was wondering what The Right Thing To Do would be. A one line message stating This program was funded my multiple sources; see the file CREDITS would suffice. Debian should not stomp all over the author's intentions if it is reasonably avoidable. Then the default behaviour would be to honour Hans Reiser's wishes to the full extent. People needing to have a quiet run (from scripts or whatever could deliberately suppress the messages. Using the -q switch implies that you know the contents of the accreditation, but do not wish your scripts to be let in on the secret as well. Unfortuneately I do not program C. Re: plagiarism of reiserfs by Debian
On Mon, Apr 21, 2003 at 01:10:47AM -0400, Glenn Maynard wrote: This aside, it's very clear to me that responding to Hans is a complete waste of time. He's trolling. If he's just going to keep ranting aimlessly, I'd say Debian can only assume we're in violation of whatever the license is, that whatever the license is is undistributable, nuke the package and point people to a clearly free alternative (possibly written by far more reasonable folks), XFS. Let me just start with saying that I started out with agreeing with Hans until it became possible that he doesn't really know what it is he wants to be saying. That is: he obviously perceived Debian as having deliberately removed some credits, and - somewhat agitated - posted an e-mail about this to several mailboxes and lists, which is understandable to a certain extent. Now it would seem the reply from Debian has only agitated Hans further to the point where he isn't listening to what we are trying to convey to him about: manners; apologies; and request of clarification. I believe all Debian developers wishes to adhere to and honour the academian tradition of giving due credits. The way this discussion has turned out it seems that the way we practice the upholding of this tradition doesn't satisfy one of the upstream authors, namely Hans. I have been assumeing all along that this discussion was only relevant to the reiserfsprogs-packages, not the kernel-code itself. This may or may not be the case, but as fas as the filesystem utilities go there is of course a free alternative in debian in the progsreiserfs-package. So I propose that Ed drops the reiserfsprogs-package for now, initiates a dialog directly with Hans Reiser to see if this matter can be settled soberly, while the rest of us use progsreiserfs. -- Lars Bahner: http://lars.bahner.com/; Voice: +4792884492; Fax: +4792974492 Key fingerprint = A913 7B54 E5FC 804D C12B 18DE 493D 83DE 5DE6 C5D6
Re: Work-needing packages report for Apr 11, 2003
I am not currently using anything on the wnpp-list, but it seems to me that not all these packages are better off gotten rid off. Does anyone know something about the importance of these packages? Has/can someone run this against the popularity-contest? My point is that I could prolly adopt a package or two, but have no knowledge or particular interest in what is being offered. On the other hand we should probably take care of the packages we have before we take on new ones, I suppose. I would suspect packages like: exim-tls udhcpd defoma(!) mserver scanmail mnogosearch cadaver phpgroupware pppoeconf pptp-linux to be of some importance. I feel obliged to take responsibility for at least one of them, but - as I said - I use none of them (except for defoma of course). So, do we have some way of separating that which we really want to get rid off from that which unfortuneately has been orphaned? More over I wish to revive the inflammable discussion as to whether or not it would be a good idea to have a section in the archives for unmaintained, much like non-US or non-free. I really think it is the best thing for our users if they can see up front that the package that they are about to install is not necessarily likely to be bugfixed in the foreseeable future. Furthermore if they don't have the skills to fix things themselves, then they just cut of that apt-source. Lars. Lars, if ScannerDaemon will be added to the Debian packages, would it be possible to add AMaViS (www.amavis.org) to the packages, too? I'm not quite sure, if AMaViS has been already added to Contrib (as AMaViS depends - apart from ScannerDaemon - on commercial virus scanners). I talked to Graeme who filed an ITP (Intention To Package) for Amavis-perl in Debian( http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=121205 ), asking whether he would do it. If he doesn't I would be glad to try to do this. Re: Preparing a Proposal: 3 DD needed for every NEW package
On Tue, 2002-01-01 at 12:51, Egon Willighagen wrote: Yes, wether it is after 1 or 2 releases... IMHO, i think it is important that the Debian Project should decide what is good for the distribution... all packages that do not meet 'our' standard can be moved into unstable and being in unstable for some time, they move into the section unmaintained, which is not part of the dist, but is part of the Debian archive... Wouldn't packages suspected of being unmaintained be better off just but into an unmaintained section or be given a priority of orphaned or unmaintained? That way the package won't be moving about in the archive, only the override file is altered. This also gives an easy to pick up indication to the user community that something is happening to the package that might affect quality. The effect will be immediate upon the equivalent of ``apt-get update'', to more or less degree depending on whether section or priority was changed. Thus, first the package is given a lower priority. orphaned if that is the case or something like outdated, if the package is just seemingly ageing. Secondly, the package is moved to another section: unmaintained. Thirdly, after awhile with nothing happening and no one reporting on it the package can actually be moved to unstable; whereafter it possibly dies. If the package is indeed in use someone is bound to write an anxious email or file a bug report along the way, letting us know they are using it.And, of course there should be some sort of reporting to developers about which packages are moving this way. Perhaps membership to this, supposedly, very low traffic list could also count as a criterion of who is active and who is MIA? -- Lars Bahner, http://lars.bahner.com/ Nihil est sine ratione cur potius sit, quam non sit. pgpupWjbDoHJY.pgp Description: PGP signature
