But clamz is in contrib, so my media player must go into contrib, even though it's free and depends only on free programs, and it's not useful only in combination with non-free data. That would allow your package to go in main and still use the funtionality of clamz in case it was installed. Sure; what I wanted to point out (and I probably wasn't clear about it) is that the dependency relation is transitive, so the policy assumes that a package depending on one in contrib must be in contrib too. On the other hand, the property of being useful only with non-free data it's not carried along with a dependency relation (i.e. a package depending on an other that is useful only with non-free data doesn't have to be useful only with non-free data itself), so if this becomes a criterion to put a package in contrib that assumption is not grounded any more. One can surely devise some technical tricks to avoid dependencies, but it's really the semantics of Depends: and contrib that have become broken. On 5 March 2010 17:46, Yves-Alexis Perez cor...@debian.org wrote: Le 27/02/2010 22:11, markus schnalke a écrit : Man pages have one more important advantage: Every command has one. Which is not true, and the point of the discussion. I think it should have read: They (should) provide a uniform way to access documentation. Of course, we could try to force on every program a sensible behaviour WRT -h and --help switches, but it looks way harder to me than provide an eventually minimal man page to every program. I am not aware of any other help system that has this property (well, maybe GNU info aims to be the one, but it's even less universal than man). I reckon this uniformity is very valuable, and should not be easily discarded as an outdated legacy for GUI programs. Just speaking for myself, but I *first* run app --help to get some quick help, and only if I need more specific information I run the about/help menu item, or the manpage in case of a command line application. --help always works with GTK stuff (and I thank GTK for that), but it's not universal. some application use -h; except, for instance, cfdisk takes -h as a switch to set the number of heads, and a confused user could be lead to do stupid things by that (ok, this is streched, but I'm sure there are quite a few other traps like this on a common debian installation) Many programs don't have an help switch; usually they have a manual page, but the user is forced to roam around several sources of information before he gets help. So, it's not that man pages are good because they are man pages, but because they seem the most plausible candidate to be a uniform and universal source of information about installed programs. If less important, is something similar to what we do by packaging programs: packaging is quite a huge effort, couldn't we let users compile their programs or use binary installers? But aptitude is what made me fall in love with debian, and I think I'm not the only one. If I need a program, 99 percent of the times I just have to fire aptitude and search it (or even search debtags if I only know what I need and not which program provides it! how cool is that?). This is wonderful. It'd be even more wonderful if we could have something similar for documentation. Re: Removing the manpage requirement for GUI programs?
2010/2/27 Josselin Mouette j...@debian.org: GUI applications usually take only a few simple command-line options, and more importantly, when you use a modern development framework, these options will always be documented correctly with the --help switch. Manuals are not only for documenting command line switches, they should actually explain how to use a program. I found the lack of good man pages one of the most annoying and widespread problems of OSS. Unfortunately, this gets more and more common with GUIs, as if a graphical program could always be self-explanatory. I completely agree that a debian maintainer can't take the burden to write every man page upstream has not written, but that doesn't change the fact that a missing, outdated or incomplete manual is a bug - to be forwarded upstream if possible. As has already been noted, the policy says there SHOULD be a manual page, so a missing one doesn't make a package RC buggy. On a side note, I find the habit of replacing the manual with on-line html documentation terrible - we don't live in an always on-line world yet. Manual pages, OTOH, are not maintained properly by upstream developers. Sadly you are right. Please try to educate upstream whenever possible. Writing good documentation has never been fun, but it dramatically improves the usefulness of a program. 2009/9/14 Hans-J. Ullrich hans.ullr...@loop.de: Problem: Whenever I upgrade to a new kernelversion, or there are new versions of kernel-modules or other packages, which are only available in source-code, it is necessary to build the new versions manually. This is rather annoying and it might be a problem for not experienced users. With module-assistant comes a script that does almost what you want, you just need to make it check for an argument, and add -l $1 to m-a's command line. It's at /usr/share/doc/module-assistant/examples/non-interactive-auto-update.sh Drop the script in /etc/kernel/postinst.d/ and it should build every module that you have unpacked in /usr/src for the new kernel Maybe this could be added to m-a documentation, with a drop-and-use script? Re: Discussion: New feature for source packages
2009/9/15 Hans-J. Ullrich hans.ullr...@loop.de: Hi Luca, just to make it clear: It is not the problem, how I can solve this problem! This problem I can easy solve with a little shell script. But there are lots of unexperienced users, which are not able to script themselve. They are just users. For those people I am looking for a solution. That's why I proposed to ship the script in examples: we could say in the documentation that if the user wants automatic building he just need to copy it in /etc. An unexperienced person needs to read m-a manual anyway, and copying a file is something I expect a debian user to be able to do. The alternative could be to ship script in /etc/kernel/postinst.d to be activated via a /etc/default/ configuration file. My suggestion was, to implement a new option into postinst as default. Maybe the change will be accepted? We will see IMHO, building and installing kernel modules without user intervetion isn't a sensible choice, you can do a lot of harm that way... Cheers, Luca P.S. I tried to set up a kernel hook with the script I attached before, but failed. If run by the kernel package postinst, m-a can't get the lock on /var/lib/dpkg/lock, since it's already being used by the package manager installing the kernel, so it either fails the prepare stage or can't install the compiled packages. The same would go with triggers, I guess. Luca -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-devel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Re: postfix as default-mta? [Re: Bug#508644: new release goal default-mta?]
2009/5/7 Brian May b...@snoopy.debian.net: esmtp can do this, if you configure it to use procmail or something. I use and like esmtp, but I don't see how we could depend on it as default MTA if it has to deliver local mail: like you said there must be procmail installed and esmtp needs some configuration to use it. Maybe a meta-package depending on esmtp-run and procmail with a postinst script to configure esmtp? Or, if configuring esmtp to use procmail doesn't do harm if the latter isn't installed, it could be set this way by default and then a simple meta-package would do. However, I very much dislike this Unix feature as it means mail can accumulate on any {user, system} account on any computer and not get noticed by the {user, system administrator}. Not getting mail from cron is worse I think... I would instead like to have something popping up when I log in in X saying me You have mail, like it happens by default if I log in from terminal (and in movies from the '80s). Re: RFA: acpi-support -- glue layer for translating laptop buttons, plus legacy suspend support
2009/4/12 Raphael Hertzog hert...@debian.org: Expect grumpy people every time that you add something new that they have to learn. I also had troubles with hal and X when I tried the X servers in experimental. But I have not read any serious criticism based on technical facts in the bug report you showed. I don't know if the fact that hal has 65 (sixty-five) outstanding bugs (many of which lay unanswered, some since YEARS), plus 10 forwarded bugs, qualifies as technical. But it's a fact. And not of the most pleasing kind. An other fact is that there is quite a big effort in the linux community to achieve fast start up, since this will strongly push linux spread on small devices like palmtops or netbooks. Hal is often horribly slow to start, spending several seconds in no-ops, just waiting for things to happen. A third fact is: if there's something new to learn, ok, it takes time but it's always good. But I'll need documentation. Basically the only documentation in the hal package are these lines: quote HAL is a hardware abstraction layer See http://www.freedesktop.org/Software/hal for lots of documentation, mailing lists, etc. unquote Please note that at that address there are NOT lots of documentation. There is something, mostly aimed at programmers. (The hal-doc package, as well, contains documentation for the APIs) I'm a user, pleased when things just work. I'm less pleased when I have to configure things to make then work, but I still feel it's ok. When I have to depend on a piece of software that either works on it's own, or it's impossible to configure, I start looking for that well-known coloured window logo. And I don't feel it's ok. This is just my personal experience with hal; an experience that makes me nostalgic of linux a couple of years ago. But I kind of feel I'm not alone. Re: RFA: acpi-support -- glue layer for translating laptop buttons, plus legacy suspend support
[not CC-ing the RFA, I did it by mistake before and I don't think this is so relevant to that specific matter] 2009/4/15 Mike Hommey m...@glandium.org: Bug count is not a good metric. Take a look at the bug count for linux-2.6, glibc, iceweasel... Fair enough. Is there a convenient way to measure how long a bug stays unanswered? Or could someone suggest a better metric? Because I have the feeling that many hal bugs are just kept undealt (upstream as well), way more than with other packages, but it could be just a feeling of course. Anyway, I take back that point; I stand with the others: I do think hal is an obscure, user unfriendly, hardly configurable system. I see it is where a part of the community is heading, so we'll have to live with that, until something better pops up; but users shouldn't be forced to use it, when it isn't necessary. I don't want my X server to wai 30 seconds to start, because it has to wait for hal, when the rest of the system is ready in less then 10 seconds. I feel xorg.conf it's a neat way to configure it, because I can do it with a text editor, and I don't have all those XML tags in the way. If I'll need sophisticated hot-plugging, I'll switch; but as long as I don't need the feature, I don't want to pay the price, as Arjan van de Ven put it. Re: Yes, we have bugs
2009/4/15 Josselin Mouette j...@debian.org: Or maybe it is just that the Utopia maintainers, just like those of Linux, KDE, GNOME, Mozilla or X.org, receive too many bug reports compared to the amount they can handle. Bugs assigned to HAL are often caused by buggy drivers or other kernel bugs, or they need workarounds specific to the hardware. They are clearly not the easiest to deal with. Joss, I was explicitly asking if there is a better metric, and I stated, both a line before your quote, and a line after, that the bug count is not a fair way to measure the quality of a package. Just to prevent a possible flame over the quality of hal maintainers' work, which was not my aim at all. I see that I could have been less aggressive in my mail, and that a rant against hal maintainers can be read in it. That was unintended, I'm sorry. My point is different: hal is a pain for a lot of users. I don't blame you nor anyone else. But please, pretty please, don't force it on every one if it's avoidable. [The rest of the mail is just more ranting on how hal sucks, skip it if you like] HAL is flawed for various reasons, and people have started to write a much lighter replacement (devicekit). Nevertheless, it still does the job correctly, and I’m happy that the last piece of the desktop that did not correctly support hotplugging now does. But what if I don't need hotplugging? Why should I bear hal flaws if I don't need its features? You must be joking. HAL is much faster to start than X, furthermore it allows for asynchronous device detection, which means both can be started in parallel. Maybe for your systems. In on of mine, it waits several second for my empty cd drive to tell it what it has inside. On my netbook, it takes more than one second out of eleven in the boot process: that makes 10%. Gdm probably takes more, but it forks after ~0.2s, so the process can go on. Anyway, with hal I have to wait for hal to start, and then for X to start, and I can't start them in parallel. I agree the HAL FDI files’ syntax sucks, but they allow to directly ship in packages a number of configuration snippets relevant to specific hardware – this is how we can really improve out-of-the-box hardware support. I'm not saying that this shouldn't be possible, just that users shouldn't be forced to use it. Re: Yes, we have bugs
2009/4/15 David Nusinow da...@gravitypulls.net: Please see the reply I just posted to the bug for a partial explanation of why using hal is important for more than just hotplugging. I'll be writing up a more complete explanation soon. I understand that hal fills an important gap in linux; I think that from an architectural point of view, an abstraction layer is the way to go. The problem is that, in my experience, hal is a horrible piece of software. It makes my (computing) life worse. Its obscure, erratic behaviour and the lack of documentation make me feel like when I was using windows 98. (ok, not *that* bad, but kind of) I am willing to pay the price to avoid it as long as possible (hopefully it will get better, or replaced, in the future), and since it looks like it's possible ATM, I would really be happy if X did not depend on that. (I see you've written that probably X dependency on hal will be demoted, I appreciate.) 2009/4/15 Tollef Fog Heen tfh...@err.no: A machine without USB or PCI is not a particularly common sight those days. Heck, even machines without SATA are becoming uncommon. I should have stated more clearly that I meant hot plugging for X. I hotplug my USB disks since when hal didn't exist. I never hot plugged a SATA disk, but I don't think you need hal to do that. Anyway, you are being PC-centric. Debian is getting on many low power devices that often don't have USB, nor PCI, nor SATA, though they have a graphical interface (e.g. mobile phones). And a bloat like hal hurts even more there. Re: Yes, we have bugs
2009/4/15 David Nusinow da...@gravitypulls.net: This is absurd. You agree that Hal fills an important need, yet you don't like it because it's currently buggy? What the hell are you doing running I wrote that **an** abstraction layer is the way to go. I deem hal flawed by design, sorry about that, all my skills (not that impressive indeed) and will wouldn't help a scrap. unstable if not helping to develop the operating system? If there's bugs then we need to find them and fix them. I don't think the lack of bug reports is the one problem affecting hal. That said, I report bugs when I find them and they're not already in the BTS. I send patches when I like the software enough, and I'm good enough (neither of these is the case with hal). and they need to be written. But by saying you don't want us to fulfill a major need in the OS is basically saying that you don't want Debian to develop any more. If that's the way you feel, then I don't think you should be running unstable and posting to debian-devel. I think I (and the other people who are against X dependency on hal) have been pretty clear on the fact that we would just like an alternative, not to kick hal away (we're not stupid nor crazy). I think this would be good for debian. I see you want to drag this in a flame, so I step back, I can live with equivs as long as possible instead of wasting my time writing emails. So long, Luca P.S. I agree, and I'm a bit concerned that everybody seems to think that it's a good idea to increasing the number of required seconds, while I really think that it's a terrible idea. IANADD, but I think that if the concern is that amendments aren't going to have enough seconds, you could amend the proposal not to affect them: after all once you're having a ballot, having one more option is not that huge effort more for the voter, so it seems sensible that amendments need fewer seconds... Re: Bug#513575: ITP: fswebcam -- Tiny and flexible webcam program
2009/1/31 Erik Schanze schan...@gmx.de: Have you already tried it? I tried to try it, it segfaults. It wouldn't be able to skip frames anyway. But this is not the main problem: dvgrab also supports UVC (USB Video Class) compliant DV devices using Linux kernel module uvcvideo, which is a V4L2 driver. Most webcams (well, at least all I've tried) are not DV compliant, they don't output DV or HDV streams. Re: Bug#513575: ITP: fswebcam -- Tiny and flexible webcam program
2009/1/30 Julien Cristau jcris...@debian.org: how many of those do we need? why this one in particular? I've been looking in Debian for a command line tool that takes pictures from a USB video capture device that doesn't support MJPEG, and couldn't find one (besides mplayer - but in a really hackish way); fswebcam does (it accepts input in a number of formats). It can skip an arbitrary number of frames before recording one - an essential feature for both the webcams I've tried, since the first few frames are crap. It can record an arbitrary number of frames, then average them and output just one picture, which is handy if you have a cheap device that produces a lot of noise. It can perform some easy manipulation on the images directly. It's really good for scripts. It doesn't need an X server. It's small and easy. And all this in 143k installed. If I missed a tool with these features, please give me some pointers... Cheers, Luca -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-devel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? 2009/1/30 Rodrigo Gallardo rodr...@nul-unu.com: And, in any case, please do put (a summary of) that list in the package's description. Your users will be most pleased. Does this look better? Fswebcam is a tiny and flexible webcam command-line program for capturing images from a V4L1/V4L2 device. It accepts a number of formats, can skip the first (possibly bad) frames before performing the actual capture, and can perform simple manipulation on the captured image, such as resizing, averaging multiple frames or overlaying a caption or an image. 2008/12/13 Jens Peter Secher j...@debian.org: The package version is libpam-ssh_1.92-3 in experimental. I have tested it extensively, but there is an awful number of ways to use the module, so I might have missed something. Re: For those who care about pam-ssh: RFC
2008/12/16 Jens Peter Secher j...@debian.org: That is intentional to make it harder to tell the difference between which users exist and which do not. (I know, it was just to point to the fact the pam-ssh is actually running) Using option 'try_first_pass' does not make any difference when no previous module has asked for a password. Mmm, it makes the module to ask the unlock password just if it finds the ssh key (if I take it away, I'm asked for the ssh password, but it still doesn't work for it doesn't find the key anyway) authoptionalpam_gnome_keyring.so Ahh, Gnome Keyring. I commented it out, no difference... working. If you find something that is not working in such a basic environment, you should try to add the 'debug' option to pam_ssh and watch /var/log/auth.log. This is a snippet from auth.log Dec 16 00:30:21 glenda pam_ssh[6179]: debug1: Authentication debugging. Dec 16 00:30:21 glenda pam_ssh[6179]: debug1: Looking for SSH login keys in /home/luca/.ssh/login-keys.d/. Dec 16 00:30:21 glenda pam_ssh[6179]: debug1: No SSH login keys found. Dec 16 00:30:21 glenda pam_ssh[6179]: debug1: Grabbing password from preceding auth module. I tried copying the key in .ssh/login-keys.d instead of linking it, I tried, just for testing, to make both the dir and the key world-readable, but no difference. I can't really see what I'm doing wrong... luca P.S. I keep sending private mails by mistake, sorry... -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-devel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: For those who care about pam-ssh: RFC
2008/12/4 Jens Peter Secher [EMAIL PROTECTED]: To do that you will need to change /etc/pam.d/ssh-auth to auth sufficient pam_ssh.so I know, that's why I'm not complaining =) May writing it in the README.Debian could be a good idea. Hmm, if noone else has access to the computer (including remote access) then the passphrase on the SSH keys do not need to be more secure than the login password. On the other hand, if there is remote access to the computer, then a weak password will enable an evil hacker to get into you account, copy your SSH key and brute-force attack the key elsewhere. So I do not really see your point. If someone has physical access to my computer, the only security is encryption. No sense for a strong login password, he could boot with an other OS or take out the HD and directly read the key (both options will take far less time then brute-forcing an even weak password by typing tries by hand). Brute forcing a strong encryption password would take a lot of time instead (I guess), which at least keeps safe computers not accessible to anyone else (I'm thinking about a laptop and a home server, if I get stolen of the laptop I can delete the public key on the server). Please correct me if I'm completely mistaken... Cheers, Luca -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: For those who care about pam-ssh: RFC
2008/12/3 Jens Peter Secher [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Because of the security implications of changing a PAM module, I would welcome some peer reviewing of the changes I have made. The new package has been uploaded to experimental, and the NEWS.Debian is as follows. Also, I would like comments in general about the whether there are better ways to solve the problems. As a user, I see a regression: I have @include (pam)-ssh-auth before @include common-auth in my confguration, and I use two different passwords for my local account and my ssh key; this way if I know I'll be networking I take the bother to type the long-and-very-secure password to unlock my key and get acces to the computer, otherwise I just hit enter and I'm asked for the simpler local password (I don't think there's really a point in a strong password if someone has physical access to the computer). This doesn't work anymore out-of-the-box. Of course switching back to the old behaviour is not a big deal, so I'm not complaining, just wondering if this change makes the package better fitted to what the user is expecting from it. Maybe I'm the odd one, I don't know; let me just point that with the new way the unlock of the key is not what grants you the access to the machine (which is what I would think ssh-auth do), IFUC. I also noted is that pam-ssh-auth and pam-ssh-session stayed in /etc/pam.d after the upgrade, I don't know if this is intended. Bug#502959: general: raff.debian.org uses non-free software

While the firmware is freely downloadable (as in beer) on HP website [1], we don't have the corresponding source code. May I ask how many computers does the project debian use, which have closed source BIOSes (or equivalent)? Should those machines be shutdown until there is enough coreboot supported [1] hardware available? And, may I ask an other question: should we really consider ourselves free, while we are just using free software, but not hardware? Should we stop using computers of which we don't have the projects, of which we don't know the internal structure? Should we stop using computers at all?
