Re: Offering up the List Manager position

1997-12-17 Thread Martin Schulze
Hi everybody!

   After seven or eight months as Debian's mailing list manager, I'm
 ready for a change of pace. I'd like to offer up the position to any
 interested individual(s).

   I'm offering the position because I haven't been spending as many
 late nights at my day job's office, and I've become involved with making a
 local computer store into an ISP. Unfortunately, my free time is not
 spent in front of machines with decent bandwidth to be able to administer
 mailing lists, so I've been behind on a lot of the processing stuff. I've
 also felt as though my performance at my day job is slipping a bit (just
 my inability to properly manage and focus my time), so I'd like to curb
 that before it gets too far out of hand.

   If anyone is interested, please feel free to contact me and I've
 give a full rundown of what I see as being involved.

I am the backup list manager and I will keep that. Whoever wants
to take over the job you're not alone.

Regards

Joey

 No, that's a bad idea. A package might silently build incorrectly

 Unfortunately hard-coding the architectures which do (or don't) have

That's what I wanted to prevent but I'd be happy with any other

Problems compiling packages

1997-12-15 Thread Martin Schulze
Good evening,

during compiling re-packaging of some libraries on the powerpc I
noticed several problems regarding our libc.

On the powerpc - as on the alpha - there is no libc5 package and will
never be (I guess). As a result compilation of any library that
provides both a libc5 and libc6 release will fail, and so does the
packaging step.

I'd suggest that all such packages only try to compile and package the
libc5 packages if there is a libc5 installed.

Thanks,

Joey

It should be compatible to xlib6, so if you have that one installed

Mailinglists documented

1997-12-02 Thread Martin Schulze
Good evening folks,

  Much of the the conversation between Debian developers and users is
  managed through several mailing lists. Debian GNU/Linux is
  developed through distributed development all around the world.
  Therefore email is a preferred way to discuss various items.

  All the mailing lists that are served on lists.debian.org are now
  documented in one file and this should reflect their actual state.

  You'll find this file on your favourite Debian mirror in
  /debian/doc/mailing-lists.txt. This file is a complete rewrite.

  Thanks to Bruce Perens for contributing the first version of this
  file. I took over maintenance of this recently. I will try to keep
  it up to date and to describe new lists.

better? I'm not sure if this is important. If the tool should
be used on every system, we should use the perl tool. We cannot
recommend another high-level interpreter (python) - perl should be enough.

 # Currently, we have a problem with compressed HTML: we can access
 # compressed HTML fine, but links don't work very well. The problem
 # is that the link says foo.html, and the actual file is
 # foo.html.gz,
 # and the browsers and servers aren't intelligent enough to handle
 # this invisibly. This means that we can't install compressed HTML, if
 # it contains links.

Wouldn't it be a cool project if we would improve all Debian used
browsers to handle this and give back the code to the upstream
release?  I like the idea.

 Seconded.

 However, we should probably distinguish between local daemons and
 network daemons. I think it is pretty safe to start lpd on every
 machine, since the default configuration would not accept queries from
 foreign hosts. If I install the lpd package, I would not like to be
 asked whether this daemon should be started!

Really? I haven't noticed that there is a switch at lpd similar to
'-r' on syslogd. Nevertheless, even local daemon can cause security
problems and if the user doesn't need it why should that daemon be
started?

I could live with your addition but I would like to be prompted,

Re: Documentation Policy

1997-06-21 Thread Martin Schulze
Christian Schwarz writes:
 Hi folks!

re

 So I suggest the following policy. Note, that this is just a summary, not
 the actual text.

  The unification of Debian documentation is being carried out via
  HTML. However, we'll still provide GNU info documentation, where
  available.

  Thus, every package that contains documentation in a convertable
  format has to provide HTML documentation.

  The documentation will be distributed via several packages:

foo-doc-html  for HTML docs
foo-doc-info for GNU info docs (where available)
foo-doc-xxx for other formats (only where appropriate)

  (An example for the last case would be DVI documentation for TeX
  related packages.)

  If the documentation files in all available formats do not require
  more than 100k of disk space _together_, they may be included in the
  main package. Otherwise, the will have to be distributed in
  seperate packages, one for each format.

 Any comments?

I don't like the idea of splitting packages that much. It increses
the confusion for users. For new users it is incredible difficult
to install Debian because of 1000 packages.

And for my feeling the documentation belongs to the package itself.
I don't want to install another package just because I need some
documention.

OTOH I do understand your way.

Re: How do we encourage bug reports?

1997-06-11 Thread Martin Schulze
Good morning Enrique and others!

Perhaps the `bug' package should be priority standard? It does make
bug reporting much easier.

   Yes, and when it installs itself, from `deity', it should stop with a
  message to be read, (any key to continue) which advertises `bug's
  presence and explains how, why, and when to use it, and invites people
  to do so.

 Wasn't one of our goals to allow an unattended installation?

We're far away from that. Many packages are asking questions so that
the installation really takes some time, answering all of them, selecting
the packages c.

Perhaps you could think over the whole thing and how we could arrange
to have an installation without the need to answer questions.

 Should this CVS repository be mandatory, i.e. does every Debian

 How much disk space will this take ?

Don't seriously bother about disk space. Debian has a fond of money
from which additional disks could be paid. But a problem that I
see is that it would be good if we could have _some_ mirrored cvs
archives, i.e. there are a lot of european maintainer and it does
make sense if we have a master cvs server cvs.debian.org and a europe/
german secondary. I don't know if and how we could arrange that uploads
reach the master, too.

  also it would
  help to coordinate updates (think of the menu package - this way we
  could have send diffs direct to the maintainer).

 My favourite example ;-)

And everyone would be able to get an older version than the actual, too.
My favourite example: just after setting up an exchange system for
my server a friend of mine encountered that the new uucp package was
unusable, if I had installed it, the result would be horrorous (sp?).

 So I'll repeat this: IMHO Currently the overhead of fixing a bug and
 publishing the fixed version is too high. For unstable it would be
 enough to check-in the fix (e.g. an added menu file, a spelling-fix).

 Please note that the procedure for stable might be different.

Hmm, where is the change? You still have to publish the fixed version,

While configuring this package one is asked the following question:

Now give the full device name that the mouse is connected to, for example
/dev/tty00. Just pressing enter will use the default, /dev/mouse.

Mouse device:

/dev/tty00 is the first serial interface on some other unices, such as
NetBSD. On Linux this is /dev/ttyS0. I would like to have this
changed. :-)

ae as default editor?

Bug#4297: msql 1.0.16 cannot connect to remote DBs

1996-09-03 Thread Martin Schulze
Hallo Brian!

}When I try to run any of the msql programs, it fails to connect to remote
}databases. Connecting to these from a 1.0.14 client works fine.
}
}$ relshow -h gate
}Connect: Connection refused

Could you please give me more information? What you gave me, isn't
enough. I work with the msqld on three machines: Linux 1.2.13
(a.out), Linux 1.3.100 (elf) and SCO ODT 2.3. I can connect to all
three engines from all three machines. I have installed the Debian
sources on them.

Does your remote engine run on the same port as the local one?
I.e. 4333. Does the other machine run Debian Linux?

Have a look at the manpage, you can specify a host using '-h
gate:1222' if the other engine runs on port 1222.

Bug#4254: msql config problems

1996-09-03 Thread Martin Schulze
Hallo Brian!

}Version: 1.0.16-2
}
}After upgrading from v1.0.14...

I have tried this, too, but haven't had any problems.

}The /var/log/msql directory is:
}
}drwxr-x---   2 operator msql 1024 Aug 23 15:11 /var/log/msql/
}
}It should be owned by root.msql and have the permissions 775.

It is owned by msql.msql. There might be a problem with your uid/gid
that I don't understand because the postinst is testing and correcting
them. I change it to mode 755.

}The /etc/msql.acl file is:
}
}-rwx--   1 operator msql  300 Aug 23 15:08 /etc/msql.acl*
}
}It should be owned by msql.msql and have the permissions 775.

It _is_ owned by msql.msql and should never be a+x. As this file
contains rules for accessing databases that no everyone should know I
don't believe that is should be world-readable. Especially because of
miserable access rules every user could easily think of spoofing.

}*** The install script removed the existing msql.acl file I had made.
}Good thing I make backups!

I'm awfully sorry, this seems to be the case because of msqld replaces
msql-server. This didn't happen here.

}Fixing these and restarting using /etc/init.d/msqld start gives
}the following error (repeatedly)...

}Can't start server : UNIX Bind : Permission denied

Then another msqld is already running, kill it with killall.

}
}mSQL Server 1.0.16 starting ...
}
}
}The unix socket is:
}
}srwxrwxrwx   1 root root0 Aug 21 15:52 /dev/msql=
}
}This should probably be owned by root.msql, but shouldn't be the
}cause of this problem.

No, my msql-package doesn't provide a socket in /dev but in
/var/run/msql. This socket was used by the old msql package.

}Trying to stop these repeated message by doing /etc/init.d/msqld stop
}gives the following error:
}
}callandor:/etc# /etc/init.d/msqld stop
}ERROR : Can't connect to local MSQL server
}rm: /var/run/msqld/shutdown: Permission denied
}rm: /var/run/msqld/shutdown: Permission denied

This all seems to be a result of incompatibilities betweeen these two
packages.

}The shutdown file is:
}
}-rw-r-   1 root root5 Aug 23 15:52 /var/run/msqld/shutdown
}
}Since I ran the stop command as root, the only thing I can think of here
}is that something is running as user/group msql and could thus not access
}the shutdown file.

Do you still have any problems after rebooting? (this erases every
eventually running old daemon)

Joey

Bug#3961: 14 character file name limit in zoo

1996-08-12 Thread Martin Schulze
Good morning Carl!

}Package: zoo

}Zoo seems to have some 14 character filename limits, even though the ext2
}filesystem doesn't have such a limit. I can store long filenames, but
}an extract seems to truncate the name at 14 characters. I have an a.out
}version that doesn't seem to have the same problem, but I am not sure
}if I had compiled it, or had gotten it from a very old slackware install.

As zoo comes from DOS I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to
support long filenames.

BETA: miniSQL database engine tools v1.0.16

1996-07-12 Thread Martin Schulze
Good day folks,

I have worked with the mSQL database engine for some time now and
decided to package it for Debian Linux. Unfortunately I'm not the
only one that works on this, but my counterpart seems to be quite slow
with answering his mails so I steped forward and finished the package
without waiting for his replies.

I'm now at the point where I for myself use the package and where I
would like to invite everyone to take this package into her/his
personal betatest and send me comments and enhancements.

There is a todo-list but I think I will release it even without having
done everything noted there. :-/

a) I have splitted the package into 4 parts to provide a maximum of
   flexibility.

   - libmsql1
 contains the shared library (only a static lib on a.out systems)
 all other packages depend on it.

   - msqld
 contains the database engine itself

   - msqladmin
 contains some programs to maintain the engine and databases

   - msql
 contains user programs to manipulate databases

   - msqlperl
 contains a library for perl that provides an easy environment for
 programing database applications

b) This mSQL package needs a special user id `msql' to maintain
   databases. Please make sure that a user and a group with that name
   exists. (on my system they are uid=gid=25, if you choose different
   values, you HAVE TO recompile the package)

   Unfortunately Bruce hasn't reallocated one for me but it's on his
   list. I would recommend an entry similar to the following in your
   password file:

   msql:password:25:25:mSQL Database Manager:/var/lib/msql:/bin/sh

   Then the whole engine can be controlled by a special user account.
   This account may receive some mails so please also make sure that
   they are read. ;-)

c) Does it make sense to put msqlperl into the misc section (it's as
   free as perl itself), while libmsql1 on which it depends has to go
   into the non-free section?

You will find the package as source, diff and .deb's at the following
location: ftp.infodrom.north.de in /pub/people/joey/debian/beta.

Please send me comments about it.

Have a pleasant weekend,

Joey

Bug#3539: (no subject)

1996-07-10 Thread Martin Schulze
Subject: mkisofs stops if an error occurs

Package: mkisofs
Version: 1.05-1

mkisofs unfortunately stops if a permission problem occors on the
source filesystem, like a directory isn't world executable or readable.

I would appreciate if it would report a warning and go on. Some users
(like myself) can't provide two times 650 MB for creating an image, instead
they have to nfs-mount all the stuff somewhere. If there is confidential
stuff in a dirctory

Bug#3540: mkisofs stops if a problem occurs

1996-07-10 Thread Martin Schulze
Package: mkisofs
Version: 1.05-1

I would appreciate if it would report a warning and go on. Some users
(like myself) can't provide two times 650 MB space just for creating an
cd image, instead they have to nfs-mount all the stuff somewhere. If
there is confidential stuff in a dirctory that should not occur on the

Bug#3703: mkisofs stops if a permission problem occurs

Package: mkisofs
Version: 1.05-1

I would like to add this as a hint to the existing bugreport
but as usual I can't find it.  I even haven't received a
confirmation.  Anyway...

I would appreciate if mkisofs would test each file for read access
while it builds its directory structure and _before_ it tries to
create the image (and would stop after it has built 600 of 650 MB).
This could save the user a lot of time, especially if the machine
that builds the image isn't the fastest one.

Martin

Automatic mount of cdroms

1996-06-30 Thread Martin Schulze
Good night folks,

normally cdrom drives are marked with `noauto' in the /etc/fstab file
to provide a smooth booting process. Does Debian provide a tool that
regularily tries to mount the cdrom drive? If not, I would be happy
to contribute with one and its manpage.

I'm not sure to which package it then should belong. The cron
package? Another base package? A package of it's own? I won't do
that, just ad an option to one of the base packages.

Have a nice sleep,

Some questions concerning further sysklogd upload

1995-11-25 Thread Martin Schulze
Hi folks!

We (Greg and myself) are now at a late stadium right before releasing
1.3 of our sysklogd package. To have a smooth introtuction I have to
get some answers to some questions before can it for debian I
have. Hopefully the maintainers are willing to answer. :-)

1. Who is responsible for kernel versions? If you use a kernel version
   less than 1.3.43 you'll need to apply a patch. So I probably need
   to know the maintainers of the 1.2.x and 1.3.y versions.

2. Who is responsible for entries in the /etc/services file?

3. How do I get a possibly non-existing manpage removed within the
   installation procedure?

Have a nice weekend anyway,

Joey

Bug#1853: top fails after 130 processes?

1995-11-13 Thread Martin Schulze
Hello Karl Ferguson!

}Package: procps
}Version: 0.97-4

}I was running top on my system tonight and it showed the stats of 124
}processes etc etc. Then on the next view 5 seconds later it spits out:
}
}top: Help!  Too many processes
}
}Then it exits, and wont let me run it until it's below 130ish - is this what
}it's meant to do? Otherwise killing processes that run away when using over
}120 odd processes would be murder going through a normal ps list.

As I remember this is a strange behaviour. It is based in two things:

a) newer kernel have a process limit of 256, if I'm correct. (I don't
   remember where this is defined)

b) Older kernel only have a limit of 130 or so. A `top' that was
   compiled on such a system will only allow you to have that much
   processes.

In former times this was a trick to test the distribution. You can
easily check wether the maintainer made the work to compile this
himself or to copy it from whereever. I'm a bit confused if this beat
Debian, too.

Bug#1833: srb@cuci.nl: patch for Debian sysklogd package]

1995-11-10 Thread Martin Schulze
Hallo Bruce Perens!

}Note that Stephen is the author of the Procmail and SmartList programs
}(which operate our list server). Turning off the fsync is indeed a big
}win on a machine that operates mailing list. There may be 4 syslog() calls
}for each subscriber every time a message goes to a mailing list. This
}ends up being continuous disk rattling.
}
}This switch solves the immediate problem, but making a way to tune this
}in syslog.conf would be even nicer.

So you would like to have something like

auth.info/var/log/auth
mail.info-/var/log/auth

in the configuration file? The `-' indicating that the logfile
shouldn't be fsync'd?

I have to think about it some time.

Bug#1792: vipw, vigr missing

1995-11-06 Thread Martin Schulze
Dear Ian Jackson!

}Package: miscutils?
}Version: 1.3-2
}
}There should be vipw and vigr scripts for editing /etc/passwd and
}/etc/group. This is so that it is easy for the sysadmin to do the
}locking necessary to ensure that updates do not get lost.

vipw is encluded in util-linux. (latest version 2.5, 2.6 will be
a havily improved package)

In the util-linux package actually there is no vigr included. But
for some reason I work on this. Perhaps it would be a good idea
if the miscutils maintainer (I don't know who that is) could
contact me then.

Re: package uploading probs

1995-10-30 Thread Martin Schulze
Hallo Matthew Bailey!

} directory across some sites with good connectivity and use rdist(1) to keep
them
} in sync? Major mirror sites might be good canditates for this.
}
}I would probably suggest just mirror as a program to keep them up to date.
}If there is a SINGLE site then this would not be a problem.

Are you sure that mirror is a good idea? How are files on a european
mirror deleted? I won't make sense retrieving them again every hour.

}I would mirror them into a directory called
}private/project/incoming-europe I have talked about this before but I
}beleive that no one was able to come up with a site.

}Let me know the URL and I will begin an hourly mirror of it, asuming that
}is OK with the rest of Devel.

I think it's a good idea. There are some debian mirrors in europe I
know of: ftp.leidenuniv.nl and somewhere at *.uni-dresden.de.

If you decide to so, It would be a good idea if that machine gets an
alias as ftp.europe.debian.org, so that it can be easily found and
used.

Re: Distribution

1995-10-30 Thread Martin Schulze
Hallo Ian Jackson!

}So, what we're left with, if you agree with my release strategy, is:
}
} released - debian-0.93
} debian-0.93/binary [ bugfixes and urgent releases only ]
} source
} ms-dos
} Packages - binary/Packages
} disks

So bugfixes et cetera still go into a released release (eh published
release). So we run into the great slackware problem that there are
tons of version 2.2 (as an example).

I don't agree to that. What about the following:

released - debian-0.93
debian-0.93/binary
source
ms-dos
Packages - binary/Packages
disks
updates/binary [ bugfixes and urgent releases only ]
source
ms-dos
Packages - binary/Packages
disks

Then it's a static Debian GNU/Linux 0.93R6 for say half a year. Only
some updates will go into the updates directory. Users who download
0.93R6 once won't have to check for everything if they want to have a
problemless release. They can look at the updates dir. And cdrom
vendors don't have the problem that their just pressed cd is outdated
just by publishing it.

What about 1.0? Ian Murdock told us that it will be fully ELF, so we
all have to creat ELF packages?

} doc/   [ Shouldn't we merge doc/, info/ and some
} info/of project/ ? ]

   yes!

}Does this seem good to people ?

Partially

Bug#1739: syslog is uncommented in /etc/services by default

1995-10-25 Thread Martin Schulze
Hallo Ian Jackson!

}Peter Tobias asks me in email:
} Ian Jackson wrote:
}  Package: netbase

}
} I've now tracked down what it is that keeps reenabling my syslog's
} network listening: the netbase package's /etc/services file has syslog
}  uncommented.
}
} Commenting out the /etc/services entry is of course a very nasty way
} of nixing syslog's usually-undesirable network listening feature, but
} we should leave things that way until the syslog package is improved.
}
} Why do you think it's a bug in the netbase package? This feature (and
} the syslog entry in /etc/services) is enabled on the systems that
} support it (at least on those I have access to). And I see no problem
} having it enabled by default. Anyway, it shouldn't be fixed by
} commenting out the syslog service in /etc/services. It should be fixed
} in the syslogd package.
}
}It's a security problem, because it allows any machine anywhere on the
}Internet to make your maching completely unusable very easily. syslog
}writes its logfiles to disk synchronously, and the logs can fill up
}the disk too.

Yes. We (the sysklogd developers) found this problem long time
ago. Future releases will have a switch (-r) that has to be set if any
message should be received from remote. Otherwise the syslogd won't
open the socket for reading. This to look in the future...

}Most people do not need or want the remote logging feature.

That's correct.

}It should therefore be disabled by default.

dito

}I agree that it shouldn't be fixed by commenting out the syslog entry
}in /etc/services, but that seems to be the only avenue open at the
}moment. Please keep the entry commented out until the syslog package
}is fixed.

I have one more comment to make. What do you think about an
explanatery text when installing the sysklogd package. This could be
done in my postinst script (if I'm not mistaken).

Joey

Debian Incoming

1995-10-21 Thread Martin Schulze
Hi folks!

While uploading a packages just a moment ago, I noticed that files in
the Debia Incoming area are of mode 666. So everyone can overwrite
them. :-( I noticed it because unfortunately while uploading the
connection timed out and normally I am not able to overwrite the empty
file, but here I was.

I think it would be much better if new files are of mode 644 or
600. What do you think?

This behaviour can be easily specified in the ftpaccess file with the
following line:

# Upload is only allowed to /incoming. All files will be owned by
# ftpadmin.ftp with file mod 0644.
#
upload ~ftp /debian/private/project/Incoming yes ftpadmin ftp 0600 dirs

Cheers

Bug#1708: passwd' not interruptible when invoked by `adduser'

1995-10-21 Thread Martin Schulze
Hello Ian Jackson!

}Package: adduser? miscutils?
}Version: adduser (1.94-1), miscutils (1.3-2)

No. libc.

}If I run adduser, and then decide to abort after having been presented
}with the password prompt, I can't do it with ^C. passwd apparently
}ignores ^C, and ^D simply produces another passwd prompt. Presumably
}I would have to type in a password twice to escape; instead, I used
}another terminal and killed the adduser process.

Because I have heavily modified the passwd program in the last days I
checked this report...

The reason is not in the adduser nor in the miscutils (or util-linux
where my passwd comes from). It's in the libc itself.

The passwd programm just makes a system call:

-- [passwd.c]
pwdstr = getpass(Enter new password: );
if (pwdstr[0] == '\0') {
puts(Password not changed.);
exit(1);
}
--

Looking at the source of libc you'll find the code that is responsible
for disabling ^C:

-- [getpass.c] ---
ttyb.c_lflag = ~(ECHO|ISIG);
ioctl(fileno(tty), TCSETS, ttyb);
--

The above code (from util-linux) will accept an empty password
(generated with ^D) - and won't change anything. For me this is a
correct behaviour - I can live with that.

I haven't looked at the passwd program that is used by Debian.

So far,

Joey

Bug#1713: procps: manpage doesn't tell the truth

1995-10-20 Thread Martin Schulze

Package: procps
Version: 0.97
Package_Revision: 4

The manpage ps(1) tells us:

--- happs 8--
COMMAND-LINE OPTIONS
   Command line arguments may optionally be preceeded by a
   '-', but there is no need for it. There are also some
   long options in GNU style; see below for those.

   (..)

   wwide output: don't truncate command lines to fit on
one line.
--- happs 8--

But ps does something else. You may specify up to three 'w's in the
command line and you'll only understand the behaviour if you look at
the code:

--- happs 8--
int set_maxcmd(int w_opts)
{
struct winsize win;

maxcols = 80;
if (ioctl(1, TIOCGWINSZ, win) != -1  win.ws_col  0)
maxcols = win.ws_col;

switch (w_opts) {
case 0: break;
case 1: maxcols += 52; break;
case 2: maxcols *= 2; break;
default: maxcols = MAXCMD;
}
return maxcols - strlen(hdrs[CL_fmt]) + 7;
}
--- happs 8--

I would recommend a) change the manpage entry or b) change the whole
handling of 'w'-processing. If the maintainer is interested, I can
send him a patch for the latter

Joey
