Re: First pass all buildds before entering unstable
Am 19.11.03 um 07:42:18 schrieb Andreas Tille: After each buildd was able to build a package the whole set with all architectures enters unstable at once. Yeah, cool. That would get rid of many buggy packages. And many clean ones. Some buildd are horribly behind time. No offence meant, it's not necessarily sloppy maintainers, rather it's slow computers and extremely complex packages. Take workrave, for instance. Perfectly stable, as far as I can tell. Not built recently on m68k (because of libgnomeuimm2.0-dev), not built on alpha for a very long time (same reason). It's not in testing, which is bad enough, with your idea only ancient versions would be in unstable. Don't get me wrong. I actually quite like the thought. It just won't work. Perhaps limit it to when it's built for i386, powerpc, hppa and arm. (That's were I got all my architecture-dependent bugs from, and they are all quite current.) Am 25.07.03 um 10:04:26 schrieb David Pashley: Probably the biggest unicode problem I have noticed is with man and/or less where it can't display dashes correctly. At least it doesn't seem to work out of the box. What's a dash? Sorry, but you have to be more specific here. There's the minus sign (usually introducing options) and the hyphen (for hyphenation). If the latter cannot be shown, it might also be a deficiency of the font you use. Bye, Mike -- |=| Michael Piefel |=| Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin |=| Tel. (+49 30) 2093 3831

Am 25.07.03 um 11:38:33 schrieb Andreas Metzler: No. see policy. sensible-editor is just for programs for which it is very hard to adapt a program to make use of the EDITOR or PAGER variables Okay, so when somebody is not able to set their EDITOR variable, isn't it quite safe to assume that they are not the people who are satisfied with vi as their editor? In summary: Someone said vi should be an alternative for editor, because /usr/bin/editor is called from other programs; that suggested you can't use vi then from there. Which isn't true, just set EDITOR. On my system, /usr/bin/editor can be a dangling symlink, it never gets called. Bye, Mike -- |=| Michael Piefel |=| Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin |=| Tel. Am 25.07.03 um 11:43:15 schrieb Adrian 'Dagurashibanipal' von Bidder: Hmmm. This is really funny. Look at http://fortytwo.ch/~avbidder/man-page.png. Good you mention it. File a bug against gnupg. It uses '-' in its manpage where it should use '\-'. What I don't really get: I use the same font for almost everything (lucidatypewriter), definitely so for the mail composer and the konsole. So while the fact that copy-pasting it 'solves' the problem hints at a font problem, I copy and paste between windows that use the same font... Whatever your konsole and your kmail is doing with it... As far as I can see, there's no lucidatypewriter ISO-10646 font, but I don't have all the packages installed. Preferably ASCII, yes. I seem to remember having once read that the input actually is in Latin-1. There, 0xA0 is a non-breaking space. I wouldn't rely on this, though. Many manpages are in Latin-2, since man used to not do any conversion at all, assuming input would be in the same encoding as output. Re: How to gracefully rename a package?
Am 24.07.03 um 16:19:15 schrieb Daniel Kobras: [...] But I also wanted to be nice to the user and automatically remove the dummy dx-dev once it's no longer needed. Therefore, libdx4-dev replaces anything in dx-dev, and dpkg removes the package. [...] Cool strategy, but in general too complicated.[1] It happens from time to time that a rename has to take place. Perhaps the maintainer made a mistake in the past, perhaps upstream decided to change the name of the program (Phoenix - Firebird). Currently, you make a new package, with Replaces: and Conflicts: and stuff, but it will not be installed. So you make a transitional package with the description can be removed, but that's ugly. (All this is exactly what Daniel said already, just a little more general.) What I would like to see is some means to make this process easy. Such as the following algorithm: If package A disappears from the distribution, but there is a package B that replaces it, install that automatically.[2] I'm not sure whether this might have any unwanted side effects... Alternatively, there could be a new control field, say Supersedes:, which would result in the above behaviour. Of course, there'd have to be a change in policy... In any case, package frontends would have to implement it first, so it could be used only after the next release. Bye, Mike [1] The new package perhaps has a slightly different set of files. [2] Well, perhaps not in pure apt-get, but in dselect. -- |=| Michael Piefel |=| Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin |=| Tel. (+49 30) 2093 3831

Cool, so many names... I'm aware that it's not dpkg's responsibility. It's not necessary, dpkg is really low level. Things like this have to be implemented in frontends anyway. (Didn't I say that in my last mail?) And that's OK, people shouldn't use backends or be aware of the problems that they might be getting. Many people use apt-get as their frontend, although it's supposed to be a backend. I believe that's wrong. But anyway it could be integrated into apt-get as well, even if Jason disagrees. root (~) # apt-get install fileutils Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree...
