Re: adding desktop files to misc packages
Russ Allbery [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Joey Hess [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Assuming that's accurate, I don't understand why we would want to add desktop files to lots of non-Gnome, non-KDE applications such as xgalaga and kobodeluxe[1]. It seems that if we added desktop files for _everything_, the abovementioned benefits would basically be lost. And we'd have to maintain both desktop files and Debian menu files for _everything_, which turns the abovementioned technical infelicity from not very nice but manageable on a small scale, to a gobal PITA. A related question that I've been wanting to ask for a while: is it possible to automatically generate desktop files from the menu files? If not, should we be enhancing the menu format so that we can? Or, perhaps an even better approach would be to swap that idea around and create the menu files from the desktop files, so that we get the benefits of the desktop file format, and also allow older systems supported by the Debian menu system to gain access to them. Perhaps systems patched to use the Debian menu system could be updated to support the menu files directly? I have also wondered for a year or more now if the continuation of Debian menu is largely NIH now that there is a cross-distribution, cross-desktop standardised menu system which we could (presumably) compatibly upgrade the menu system to use if we so chose, and then eventually retire it completely if possible. Re: Considerations for 'xmms' removal from Debian
Kapil Hari Paranjape [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: The maintainers of the xmms package in Debian are proposing the removal of the aforementioned package. Please read on. The rationale given does not seem to clarify why the proposal is for removal instead of the maintainers just orphaning the package? * There are a number of other GTK 1.2 packages. GTK+ 1.2 (and GLib 1.2) were abandoned upstream over *six years* ago. It's rather probable (nay, doubtless) that there are unidentified and unfixed security problems with these libraries. Given that upstreams have had over five years to port their code, it is time to drop dead code that is not maintained, IMO. It's not like there isn't huge amounts of compatibility code in GTK, GDK and GLib to ease such porting (I've used it myself). A minimal port is often just a bunch of regex search and replace operations, with some small amount of rewriting. Note that this is irrespective of how good XMMS is or is not. The libraries it depends on are dead, and they should have upgraded years back. Regards, Roger -- .''`. Just FYI, a few weeks ago I merged and re-diffed all of the Debian patches for 0.79 against the latest upstream PAM, 0.99.7.1. You can find the source package here: http://people.debian.org/~rleigh/pam/ However, there's at least one bug in there that's preventing it working properly. It's likely there has been a trivial error when hand-merging all of the old patches. It's also possible that they need more work to work with the new PAM; I've re-done the patches where needed, but it's possible that the internals have changed sufficiently that it's broken. Unfortunately, I'm too busy right at the moment to spend enough time on debugging it and/or re-verifying all of the new diffs. If you, or anyone else, has any free time and wants to push the latest PAM into unstable, this is something that could use some attention. If you're bored at DebConf, this could be the thing for you! The easiest way to get started is to compile a debugging version of libpam and install it. NOTE: Install into a chroot or you will knacker your main system (you won't get to log in again!). The NCBI non-redundant database (nr). Having this packaged and frequently updated (maybe in volatile) would be fantastic. There are also quite a number of other significant (popular) databases used for bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics and other biological fields which would be really nice to have in Debian. Here's a selection: ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/blast/db/ ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/refseq/ ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/repository/ ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/pub/taxonomy/ Because these are all in standard formats, it might even be possible to have updated packages generated and uploaded semi-automatically. These would be really useful in conjunction with much of the bioinformatics software already available in Debian, which could make good use of them if they were put in standardised locations. As has been mentioned previously, a separate archive section so that mirrors could skip them would be nice. Together, all these databases are eye-wateringly huge. Especially when uncompressed. Perhaps just using sqlite as an (optional) cache for dpkg and/or apt would bring sufficient improvements to systems which desire it That could actually be quite difficult - how would you migrate from one to the other? If the database is just a cache, then it should get transparently rebuilt as soon as you change it. The installer will inevitably use the smallest possible combination of packages, the finished installation might need to use sqlite. Besides, you still have the same problems of trying to copy package sets and having to run sqlite before anything else can be done. If it's an optional cache, then there's no need to actually build the cache if it's not possible; you can just fall back to the real data. Migrating from a busybox rootfs (without dpkg) would potentially cause more problems and making busybox depend on sqlite is plain crazy. Sorry, but I fail to see the connection between busybox and sqlite. If enabled, sqlite would be part of dpkg, probably either statically linked or dynamically loaded. I would think static, for safety. Regards, Roger -- .''`. Help/maintainer wanted for Gutenprint
Hi folks, Due to time constraints I expect to continue to at least October, I'm not able to devote sufficient time to the Gutenprint packages in order to do a good job of keeping on top of bug reports, keeping up-to-date with new upstream versions, and testing to make sure it is well integrated with the rest of the Debian printing infrastructure. So far things haven't been too bad because there hasn't been a new stable upstream release. There has however been a new development release, and it would be nice to get that packaged and tested. I'm looking for a co-maintainer to help take care of the packages, and possibly take over them completely if I fail to find enough time in the future. I would be available to help with any issues with the packaging, testing, etc.. Volunteers would need to have at least one model of Epson inkjet, and HP or other supported models in addition would be useful. Making regular use of the package is really a must. This includes: cupsys-driver-gimpprint (transitional) cupsys-driver-gutenprint CUPS driver escputil Printer head cleaning/alignment/ink level checking foomatic-db-gimp-print (transitional) foomatic-db-gutenprint Foomatic data gimp-print GIMP Print plugin gutenprint-doc User manual gutenprint-locales I18n ijsgimpprint (transitional) ijsgutenprintGhostscript IJS driver libgutenprint-devMain dev package libgutenprint-docAPI reference and developer docs libgutenprint2 Core library and modules libgutenprintui1-1 (only used by cinepaint) libgutenprintui1-dev (only used by cinepaint) libgutenprintui2-1 (only used by gimp-print) libgutenprintui2-dev (only used by gimp-print) Many thanks, Roger -- .''`. Bourne shell assistance needed for Bug #422909
Hi folks, Bug #422909 has resulted from a broken assumption in how the shell would handle errors, and I'm unsure exactly how to do this correctly. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Given that this can in some circumstances result in severe dataloss, I'd very much like to get this right. The actual problematic code is here: http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/buildd-tools/trunk/schroot/bin/schroot/setup/10mount?op=filerev=0sc=0 : # Unmount all filesystem under specified location # $1: mount base location do_umount_all() { $LIBEXEC_DIR/schroot-listmounts -m $1 | while read mountloc; do if [ $AUTH_VERBOSITY = verbose ]; then echo Unmounting $mountloc fi umount $mountloc || exit 1 done || exit 1 } The problem here is that if schroot-listmounts segfaults (the trigger in this case) or returns an error, the script continues without any indication of the fact, despite set -e being in effect. In this bug this results in a failure to umount a set of mounted filesystems, and then an rm -rf taking out all the data further down the line. A small testcase to demonstrate: int main (void) { char *s = segfault me; *s = 'p'; return 0; } #!/bin/sh set -e # This SEGV goes unnoticed. ./segfault | while read line; do echo Line: $line done || exit 3 # This one is noticed. ./segfault true How can I rewrite the while loop securely (and preferably avoiding tmpfiles), such that any bad exit status or failure will result in immediate termination of the script with an error status? Sorry if this is too basic for -devel, but I need to be sure it's correct. Many thanks, Roger -- .''`. Re: Mandatory -dbg packages for libraries?
Steve Greenland [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: On 22-Apr-07, 14:39 (CDT), Neil Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'd like to see all library source packages having a minimum of 4 binary packages required by Policy: the SONAME, the -dev, the -dbg and a -doc package. (Libraries for perl or other non-compiled languages would be exempt from -dbg packages but not -doc.) 1. Rather than cluttering the archive and Packages file with -dbg packages that will (mostly) never be used, how about mandating a debug target in library debian/rules files, so that when someone does need the debug package, it's trivial to build. Since the person most likely to need the target is the package maintainer, there would be some incentive to make sure it works. When I have needed to debug problems in the past, this has sometimes meant over a day of rebuilding large libraries when the problem covers several shared libraries. I would have saved hours if I could have just installed some prebuilt -dbg packages and run gdb. Even more importantly, I want to use the debug package matching the version *and build* the user reporting the problem has. If it's due to e.g. a buggy header in a build dependency causing a misbuild, I would miss this when I rebuild it. I have had this bite me in the past. I would personally support the requirement for every binary library package to have a separate -dbg package containing the debug symbols. Even if they don't get regularly used, they are worth it for when things go wrong. We can then just ask the user to install libfoo-dbg and send us a backtrace, whatever the package or library. For big and/or popular applications, it would also be nice to have -dbg symbols for them as well. If there are concerns over archive size, why don't we drop all static .a libraries at the same time. Given that in Debian we typically always link dynamically, is there a need for .a libraries in all but a handful of cases? 2. Why a seperate -doc? API docs should be part of the -dev package. I'm going to guess that for *most* libraries, the docs are a trivial part of the size of the -dev package. For libraries using doxygen, it can generate megabytes of documentation, even for small libraries if you enable all the call graphs and things. Unless I'm actually developing using a particular library directly, I don't want disk space wasted by its docs. It also means less to download when autobuilding stuff. For those with significant documentation, sure, a seperate -doc makes sense, just as we do now. Agreed. Regards, Roger -- .''`. Re: When to upload a package which fixes FTBFS with GCC 4.3 ?
Charles Plessy [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Le Mon, Apr 02, 2007 at 10:21:22PM +0100, Martin Michlmayr a écrit : Your package fails to build with GCC 4.3. Version 4.3 has not been released yet but I'm building with a snapshot in order to find errors and give people an advance warning. In GCC 4.3, the C++ header dependencies have been cleaned up. The advantage of this is that programs will compile faster. The downside is that you actually need to directly #include everything you use (but you really should do this anyway, otherwise your program won't work with any compiler other than GCC). Some background of this can be found at http://gcc.gnu.org/PR28080 I have a question : I read in the link you provided that binary program will be smaller if compiled with gcc 4.3. Does it mean that I should wait for gcc 4.3 to become the default compiler before uploading a new version which fixes the bug, in order to take advantage of a rebuild, or will there be a mass rebuilding anyway ? (CCing to -devel in the hope that the question is not too naive and has a general interest.) Fixing the bugs well in advance of a compiler transition makes the transition far smoother. It should be trivial to schedule binNMUs once the new compiler is the default, and it's probably going to be a while for 4.3 to be the default, given that 4.2 isn't yet released. Given that all these fixes are in fact bugs due to missing headers, I can't see any reason not to fix them at the earliest opportunity. Personally, I'll be uploading fixed versions of my packages as soon as etch is released. -- .''`. Re: Debian in Sanger (Re: update on binary upload restrictions)
Paul Cager [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Tim Cutts wrote: What I'd actually like is some sort of non-root packaging system so that users could build software with decent dependency checking for their shared software infrastructure. Can dpkg be cajoled into doing that? Could you use a schroot instance to do that? You can if you combine it with sbuild (specifically for Debian packaging, though). However, it's still a bit risky, because there are ways the user could abuse their access to the chroot in order to subvert the system (e.g. via the debian/rules binary target or in the postinst of a package pulled in as a build-dependency). Worse, the current design allows the sbuild user unrestricted root access to the chroot. If you don't use schroot, sbuild *requires* unrestricted sudo access to the host system! I do have plans (post-etch) to eliminate the user access to the chroot via sudo or schroot, so that sbuild should become safe for untrusted users. Once I have got my thoughts organised, I'll post them to buildd-tools-devel in the next week. Regards, Roger -- .''`. You mean a shortcoming of apt-get? I think aptitude manages this more naturally. If it really does then we could use aptitude in sbuild. If you have the time please do try. Alternatively, how much of the apt-get logic lives in libapt? We could just use libapt directly. Re: Request for virtual package ircd
Aurélien GÉRÔME [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hi, On Thu, Oct 12, 2006 at 12:10:51AM +0200, Mario Iseli wrote: as described in http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/virtual-package-names-list.txt I announce here my idea of the virtual package ircd. When I count correctly are at the moment 7 different IRC-daemons in Debian and they logically conflict with each other. So I would think an official virtual package would be a fine solution. There are also IRC services which work in general with all ircds, so it would be easier if those packages also could only depend on ircd. As the (co-)maintainer of 2 IRCd packages and 2 IRC services packages, I completely disagree. Some IRC servers do *not* conflict, so a virtual package is unnecessary. The Conflicts and Provides are orthogonal. Certainly, you can conflict with the same package you provide, but this is not needed here. If they conflict, like ircd-hybrid and dancer-ircd, it is up to the maintainer to manage the conflicts. Yes, or even better to arrange things such that they no longer conflict. Some services, if not all, are designed to work on a specific IRCd. For instance, hybserv is supposed to only run with ircd-hybrid and dancer-services to only run with dancer-ircd. I do *not* want to undertake the maintenance of a services package on other IRC servers that the one for which it is designed. Then in this special case you would continue to depend upon the specific package, rather than the virtual package. Why is this a problem? Regards, Roger -- .''`. Re: Policy regarding virtual packages
Roger Leigh [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Following some discussion with Marco d'Itri about inetd, I'd like to put forward some more general thoughts on virtual package handling for some comments. Currently, virtual packages (such as mail-transport-agent) cannot be specified by themselves. They can only be used in combination with a non-virtual package which provides the default implementation. For example: Depends: exim4 | postfix | mail-transport-agent or Depends: exim4 | mail-transport-agent This means that 1) Each package depending on a virtual package must specify a real package 2) There is no central policy defining which package is the default implmentation--each package could specify a different default 3) Changing the default is a lot of work--every reverse dependency must be updated. For the case of mail-transport-agent, this could be simply solved by the creation of a mail-transport-agent-default package. This would be an empty package, doing nothing but providing this dependency: Depends: exim4 | mail-transport-agent All packages wanting to depend on mail-transport-agent need only have Depends: mail-transport-agent-default When exim4 becomes exim5, or some other MTA, only the mail-transport-agent-default package would need updating. For the new inet-superserver virtual package, there are potentially over 120 packages which would need to add Depends: openbsd-inetd | inet-superserver However, I feel that this is too many places to hardcode the openbsd-inetd default (Marco d'Itri does not believe this is worth the effort, but I personally think that it will potentially prevent a lot of future effort). Here, I think a means of specifying a distribution-wide default is much better than requiring each package to separately specify it. For this case, I would like to create an inetd-default (or inet-superserver-default) package, which would simply be Depends: openbsd-inetd | inet-superserver and all inetd-requiring packages would just use Depends: inetd-default See http://people.debian.org/~rleigh/inetd-default_1.tar.gz and http://people.debian.org/~rleigh/inetd-default_1.dsc There are some other useful side-effects: Custom Debian Distributions can easily change the -default package to customise the distribution defaults. Example: Scott Remnant recently blogged on -planet about the upstart init/cron/inetd replacement being developed in Ubuntu. This would replace openbsd-inetd, and with this scheme would require a one-line change to a single package. Other CDDs might want to use other inetds, e.g. xinetd, or a null inetd which does nothing. For MTAs, other distributions might want to switch from exim4 to a more lightweight MTA (or even a null MTA for minimal systems). This system would allow that to be simply and easily configured. Was there any further discussion needed about this? The only objection I saw was to the package naming, which I would like to hear alternatives for (currently $virtualname-default). I also got one mail privately concerned that packages should still be able to specify a particular preference should they need it; it is of course possible to have a preference | virtual-default dependency. Unless there are any valid objections, I would like to implement the above inetd-default packages for etch. This would require mass-filing bugs against about 200 packages; they were listed in an earlier inetd thread. This would switch their current openbsd-inetd/netbase dependencies to using inetd-default. Implementing it for all other virtual packages would also be nice (particularly m-t-a), but does need approval first. Any further comments? Thanks, Roger -- .''`. Update: status of inetd
Hi folks, Following the last thread on the subject, several things have happened: 1) All packages depending on netkit-inetd have had their dependencies replaced with a netkit dependency. 2) netkit now only depends upon openbsd-inetd, so netkit-inetd is now no longer used by either new installs or upgrades from sarge. 3) netkit-inetd (netkit-base) is now ready for removal from unstable (see #383960). I'd like to propose the following as the next step. I was going to leave this until after etch, but further consideration made me realise it needs doing before, otherwise etch-etch+1 upgrades will break (or it will have to wait until etch+2, and that's too long). What I'd like to propose is this: 1) Split out update-inetd from netbase into a new inetd package. See http://people.debian.org/~rleigh/inetd_1.tar.gz http://people.debian.org/~rleigh/inetd_1.dsc as an example of what I'd like to do (Md should probably be the maintainer here, since it is derived from netbase). This - provides a single package for all update-inetd-using packages to depend upon - provides a default inetd dependency, so all packages wanting an inetd just need to depend on it, rather than hardcoding the default inetd in every package. - inetd-providing packages need to Provide internet-super-server - it doesn't depend on netbase, to prevent a circular dependency, but will post-etch. 2) netkit needs to drop the files moved into the inetd package above, and Depend on inetd. This will - ensure update-inetd is present by default so sarge-etch upgrades will work. - can be dropped post-etch. 3) All update-inetd users need to depend on inetd instead of/in addition to netbase. The complete list is: afbackup amanda-client amanda-server apt-proxy asp atftpd bidentd biff binkd bitlbee bootp bozohttpd cfingerd csync2 cupsys-bsd cvs cyrus-imapd cyrus-pop3d dbskkd-cdb dhcp efingerd exim fakepop fam ffingerd fingerd firebird2-classic-server fspd ftpd ftpd-ssl gidentd gnats gtalk gwhois heimdal-kdc heimdal-servers heimdal-servers-x hotway ident2 ifcico ipopd isdnvboxserver kerberos4kth-servers kerberos4kth-servers-x kftgtd krb5-ftpd krb5-kdc krb5-rsh-server krb5-telnetd ktalkd leafnode ltsp-server lukemftpd mailutils-comsatd mailutils-imap4d mailutils-pop3d masqmail micro-httpd midentd mooix ndtpd netkit-inetd nntp node noffle nsca nullidentd oftpd oidentd openbsd-inetd p10cfgd pawserv pidentd popa3d poppassd postfix proftpd proftpd-common pure-ftpd-common qpopper qpopper-drac remctl-server remstats-servers rlinetd rsh-redone-server rsh-server rstatd rusersd rwalld samba sendfile sendmail-base sidentd skksearch slidentd smail smtpd sn solid-pop3d sslwrap statd swat talkd teapop teapop-ldap teapop-mysql teapop-pgsql telnetd telnetd-ssl tftpd tftpd-hpa uucp uw-imapd vsftpd wipl-client-inetd wu-ftpd xfingerd xtel xtell zmailer Once steps 1 and 2 above are compete, I'd like to mass-file bugs against all these packages, and then if neccessary NMU the dependency change a few weeks later, so we can ensure everything is fixed before etch is released. Any comments? Regards, Roger -- .''`. Policy regarding virtual packages
Hi folks, Following some discussion with Marco d'Itri about inetd, I'd like to put forward some more general thoughts on virtual package handling for some comments. Re: Status of inetd for etch
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Marco d'Itri) writes: On Aug 10, Roger Leigh [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: installed, all using the same configuration file. Is this a use case we really want to support? Are there really setups running multiple inetds for a good reason? Having a virtual A good reason usually is using features not available in a single package (especially inetd vs. inetd). It's not hard to manage anyway, my scheme allowed this. We don't allow multiple mail-transport-agents, even though they have different features. Do we have a real, demonstrable, use-case for permitting multiple inetds? To me, it seems rather more manageable to have just one, particularly because they all generally use the same configuration file. If this is something only one or two people with specialised needs do, they can surely sort it out by themselves, as they would if they had a specialised mail setup. * netkit-inetd I agree that it should be removed from the distribution, or at least replaced by openbsd-inetd as the default inetd. In that case, would it be possible for a netbase upload changing Depends: openbsd-inetd | netkit-inetd to Depends: openbsd-inetd or even Depends: internet-super-server | openbsd-inetd to allow for a future virtual package? openbsd-inetd could implement the virtual package right now, and the other inetds can fix up their dependencies after. - The other packages have different init script names or need some work on the package dependencies (e.g. inetutils-inetd). xinetd is in the same situation, but also needs some work on update-inetd before it will be suitable as a replacement. ITYM lots of work. Perhaps it simply needs approaching in a different way. Rather than a hugely complex update-inetd, why not have each inetd provide one which works for them (with a common implementation for the traditional format)? On removal, they can (if using a file other than /etc/inetd.conf) dump their configuration there to allow migration between inetd packages and do the opposite on install. * IPv6 transition - Should individual packages be made to listen on both tcp4 and tcp6 sockets, or should this be done by the inetd itself, or even update-inetd? Only individual packages know if they support IPv6. So what are you proposing as the solution here? Should each package call update-inetd twice, for both v4 and v6? (Assuming they support both.) - Some inetds automatically listen on v6, whereas others need it I call them broken. I believe that administrators do not expect that services are exposed to IPv6 connections unless they are configured this way in inetd.conf. Why? All the other major daemons listen on both by default, and I do expect inetd services to do the same where possible. Most of the services are already protected by TCP wrappers, so you would need to explicitly add [::] to /etc/hosts.allow to get an IPv6 connection. Users upgrading from woody or sarge to etch will not be switched to openbsd-inetd, whereas new installs will use it by default. Did you actually test this? Status of inetd for etch
This post is about some issues with the various inetd packages in etch (and unstable). This is a case where I think some coordination between all the packages or some inetd package policy would make them all generally more usable. The currently available inetd packages, and a summary of their state: +-+- Package | IPv6 support| Source quality / comments +-+- inetutils-inetd | tcp = tcp4 and tcp6 | OK, but upstream quiet | | micro-inetd | Partial | Not a proper inetd replacement | | netkit-inetd| No, and it will be | Terrible. It won't even build | difficult to add| from the .orig.tar.gz, and the | | tarball is a mess. IMO, should be | | removed from Debian. | | 102 outstanding bugs. | | openbsd-inetd | tcp=TCP4, tcp4, | OK. Bug in reload (#382404). | tcp6, tcp46 | Bug in restart (#376716). | | | | rlinetd | Yes | Not a drop-in replacement. | | superd | No | Unmaintained. Candidate for | | removal? | | xinetd | tcp4, tcp6 | Good, but not currently a drop-in | | inetd replacement (but could be | | configured to do so). +-+- Outstanding issues -- * There is no inetd virtual package, so multiple daemons may be installed, all using the same configuration file. Is this a use case we really want to support? Are there really setups running multiple inetds for a good reason? Having a virtual internet-super-server package or similar with appropriate dependencies would make them rather more interchangeable, as for e.g. mail-transport-agent. * There is no common init script name. Same problems as above. * netbase only depends on two inetd packages (openbsd-inetd and netkit-inetd; a virtual depends plus a default would be nicer. * netkit-inetd - No upstream. - Last maintainer upload was 22 months ago. The last three uploads were NMUs. - It doesn't build from the original source. - The original source is a horrible mess, with code duplication (the source tree has a duplicate copy embedded within itself), and i386 ELF object code and binaries code in the tree. - The C source itself is not very nice. - Is this really fit to keep in Debian? It might be better to remove it entirely given its terrible state. * openbsd-inetd is the only drop-in replacement at this time - The other packages have different init script names or need some work on the package dependencies (e.g. inetutils-inetd). xinetd is in the same situation, but also needs some work on update-inetd before it will be suitable as a replacement. * IPv6 transition - Should individual packages be made to listen on both tcp4 and tcp6 sockets, or should this be done by the inetd itself, or even update-inetd? - Some inetds automatically listen on v6, whereas others need it explicitly enabling. What should tcp vs tcp4 vs tcp6 (and the same for udp) imply? - Some general policy would be useful here to make the behaviour consistent and to make IPv6 support as painless as possible for users. * Upgrade from sarge and earlier The inetd daemon installed by default: etch: openbsd-inetd | netkit-inetd sarge: netkit-inetd woody: netkit-inetd (netkit-base, split from netbase) potato: (in netbase) slink: (in netbase) Users upgrading from woody or sarge to etch will not be switched to openbsd-inetd, whereas new installs will use it by default. Removing netkit-inetd from the netbase depends should permit this, but a complete removal would perhaps be the best option. While it's probably too late to fix up update-inetd and all the inetd integration issues for etch, fixing the netbase dependency and eliminating netkit-inetd is doable. Any thoughts or comments? Christian Aichinger [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: On Tue, Aug 01, 2006 at 10:24:32AM +, Reinhard Tartler wrote: The sbuild package in debian however adds more features, like schroot support. With this, it can use schroot to create temporary, clean chroots from tarballs, block devices, create lvm snapshots on the fly and so on. I read Roger, that even xen support is planned. Xen support is planned, but not for the immediate future. I'm waiting on its inclusion in the kernel, and a working powerpc32 port. So it's more of a medium- to long-term goal, unless there are any Xen fanatics who step up to do it sooner :) schroot is another very very useful tool. It gives me more or less instant access to clean chroots on lvm snapshots for experimenting, building, developing and testing. When I didn't know schroot could do this I wrote a script to do that myself: http://greek0.net/lvmchroot/lvmchroot_0.5-1.dsc It's geared towards creating and maintaining chroots on LVM logical volumes, creating snapshots as needed. It also takes care of creating the initial chroots on LVs, it can automatically upgrade them, etc. Plus they're better documented (IMHO) as schroot, for which I couldn't find any useful docs. A complete copy of the docs is here: https://alioth.debian.org/docman/?group_id=30471 I agree they aren't the most user-friendly in the world; some additional explanatory material would help a great deal. I think schroot has a slightly different focus, which would account for the differences. schroot focuses on allowing user access to, and maintainence of chroots. It plays no part in the initial chroot creation, or performing stuff like keeping them up-to-date. It delegates this to other tools, like debootstrap and the sbuild chroot tools (in /usr/share/sbuild). lvmchroot, on the other hand, assists with initial chroot setup, and snapshot creation but doesn't handle the chroot(2) stuff to allow user access. As a result, I think the two tools could complement each other nicely. I would be very happy to add additional helper scripts to schroot, and merge missing features. One thing we don't currently do is allow the user to specify the LVM snapshot name; it gets a UUID. Having this as an option would be nice. Some of the sbuild scripts could also be merged with lvmchroot, such as buildd.chroot. If the schroot maintainers agree we could try to merge my stuff into schroot. That would be really cool. We are part of the buildd-tools project on Alioth: https://alioth.debian.org/projects/buildd-tools/ so subscribing to the list would be a good first step. Re: cdrtools
Erast Benson [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: On Thu, 2006-07-13 at 12:59 +0100, Ian Jackson wrote: Erast Benson writes (Re: cdrtools): Joerg clearly stands that: 1) Makefiles != scripts or at least it is unclear whether Makefiles may be called scripts: GPL §3 requires the scripts for compilation to be provided but as a first note, it is unclear whether Makefiles may be called scripts. This is an absurd interpretation. `The scripts used to control compilation and installation of the executable' would be an empty set for much GNU software if it didn't include the Makefiles. It is obvious that that phrase was included in the GPL specifically to ensure that the build system is covered. If it's not obvious to someone then that person is either (a) dishonest or (b) astonishingly out of touch with reality. I don't want to insist on (1) too. But I must agree with Joerg that it is unclear if Makefiles could be called as scripts for compilation. This is a minority viewpoint, IMO. We could argue for months about what a script is, but that wouldn't help much. Makefiles are often referred to as build scripts, and I don't think many folks would argue that they are *not* scripts. Look at the complete definition: , | The source code for a work means the preferred form of the work for | making modifications to it. For an executable work, complete source | code means all the source code for all modules it contains, plus any | associated interface definition files, plus the scripts used to | control compilation and installation of the executable. ` Makefiles are programs written in non-scripting language. To understand what non-scripting language is, I googled this: I'd define a scripting language as one which requires you to put $ or whatever in front of variable names, and makes quoting strings an optional construct, and does string variable substitution inside string constants unless you force it not to with odd escape characters. A non-scripting language is one which has simple, clear-cut lexical conventions and parsing syntax. You are going into nitpicking arguments about semantics and definitions at this point, which is not particularly useful: you are wasting everyone's time, including your own. The intent of the GPL requirement is clear: the build system in a distributed source tree licensed under the GPL must be GPL (or compatible with the GPL). That is, the mechanism used to build GPL code is an intrinsic part of a GPL licensed work, and so cannot be licensed in an incompatible manner. Regards, Roger -- .''`. Re: Broken applications: Could we be honest?
Art Edwards [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I have been writing to the list about two applications that are so broken on the AMD64 distribution that they render the box pretty useless. From the look of things, we are talking about a single bug in a single library. So the system is hardly useless. We just need to fix that bug. Please start by filing a bug report. I can't see anything here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=lesstif2 A new version was released a month ago, but hasn't yet been packaged. It may be that it has already been found and fixed upstream. http://www.lesstif.org/ReleaseNotes.html You could try building it yourself to find out. [...] Unless such core pieces as the debugging tool (ddd) and the data display tool (xmgrace) are working, it is dishonest to pretend that the 64-bit version is ready for testing. It would be very nice if you, and other distro's, were to put appropriate caveats on the websites, saying that 64-bit is really not ready for the prime-time desktop. That way, we could make better purchasing decisions. I don't think anyone is being dishonest, but you are exaggerating the seriousness of the situation. Once a bug is found, please report it and it will get fixed. It can't be fixed if the maintainer is not made aware that there is a problem. Re: xmgrace ddd again
Art Edwards [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Neither xmgrace nor ddd will allow text input for AMD-64 architecture. This is a severe problem. I'm writing to the developers list because their common problem probably means there is, perhaps, a library issue. I shouild point out that I have built from sources and have exactly the same problem. For what it's worth, I have exactly the same problem in fedora core 5, but not on Fedora Corre 4. They both have the lesstif widget toolkit in common. Refer to Debian bug #230910 for more N: information, or simply update your tar-version and rebuild. (along with several other files). These filenames are indeed exactly 100 characters long, as mentioned in the referenced bug. The bug, however, indicates that this may not have really been a bug in tar but rather was a bug in dpkg with its inability to handle filenames that were exactly 100 characters (apparently one isn't supposed to nul-terminate in that case). It sounds like a bug that dpkg is using the old v7 tar format which had that 99 char limitation.s Why can't dpkg use the newer ustar or pax formats? -- Roger Leigh Printing on GNU/Linux? http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/ Debian GNU/Linuxhttp://www.debian.org/ GPG Public Key: 0x25BFB848. Re: Hidden files
Joey Hess [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Henrique de Moraes Holschuh wrote: It flags alarms, it is obscure, and generally it is bad form to have hidden files anywhere but under user homes anyway. There certainly is no excuse to have anything hidden inside the system hierarchies, you WANT to easily know what is there. Sure there is. For example, mooix uses .mooix as a flag file in directories that are mooix objects, and uses other dotfiles inside objects for fields that are only accessible by methods of that object and are hidden from casual interspection (as opposed to public fields). It is always bad practice to hide things from the user or system administrator, particularly outside their $HOME. If you need to store additional metadata about files or directories, you really should be using POSIX 1003.1e extended attributes. It's supported by glibc.
