From the ffmpeg README.Debian: Currently the following video encoders are disabled in the ffmpeg package: H263, H264, MPEG2 video, MPEG4 and MS-MPEG4. Once i686-bigmem packages for 2.6.31 get autobuilt (KMS wasn't compatable with PAE prior to this release), I'll follow up to 521596 if config changes seem to be necessary after all. As I mentioned on the intel-gfx list. For KMS on Intel you'll need to boot with video=i915:modeset=1 Also, make sure you're using 0.93.4 or later of initramfs-tools. Ubuntu, Knoppix, and Debian all produce Mode Not Supported messages on the TV but produce no display. If I try to use the Debian Install disk to create a new system, the boot up stuff displays fine, but when it gets to the first installation screen the text is diagonally ripped and unreadable. On one of my laptops, even in windows there is no display. (I assume that the graphics card in that machine doesn't support the screen modes necessary.
