Bug#31352: Should be marked as wontfix?
On Mon, 07 Jan 2008, Christian Perrier wrote: Since the Debian project apparently intends to continue distributing non-free software, should this bug be marked as wontfix? The point is not even wanting to distribute non-free software or not. Even if Debian wasn't distributing non-free software (which is highly debatable), tools have no reason to blacklist repositories that do. Our priorities are our users blah blah blah. Of course, blacklisting repositories is not something acceptable. However, before closing this bug, it makes sense to verify that dselect doesn't show packages in Suggests: or Recommends: if they don't exist according to its list of packages. That way, when non-free is not used, non-free packages are not shown, which seems to be the right behaviour. Bug#458589: marked as done (dpkg-buildpackage should not call debian/rules with -j when DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS contains parallel=n)

(NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: dpkg-dev Version: 1.14.14 Severity: important Hi, dpkg-buildpackage now handles parallel builds with the following code: if ($parallel || $ENV{DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS}) { my $build_opts = Dpkg::BuildOptions::parse(); $parallel ||= $build_opts-{parallel}; if (defined $parallel) { $ENV{MAKEFLAGS} ||= ''; if ($parallel eq '-1') { $ENV{MAKEFLAGS} .= -j; } else { $ENV{MAKEFLAGS} .= -j$parallel; } } $build_opts-{parallel} = $parallel; Dpkg::BuildOptions::set($build_opts); } However, many packages don't support parallel building yet. I can see two use cases for parallel builds: (1) a developper that knows that his package builds fine in parallel, and that uses dpkg-buildpackage -j. (2) archive-wide rebuilds, or fast buildds. In case (2), the current code is harmful. The safe way to do parallel builds was to set parallel=n in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS, so the 10 or 20 packages where parallel building is supported can use it, and all the others will just build using one thread. I think that the current code should be changed to: --- dpkg-buildpackage.pl.orig 2008-01-01 23:06:39.0 +0100 +++ dpkg-buildpackage.pl2008-01-01 23:07:41.0 +0100 @@ -240,10 +240,9 @@ warning(_g(unknown sign command, assuming pgp style interface)); } -if ($parallel || $ENV{DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS}) { +if ($parallel) { my $build_opts = Dpkg::BuildOptions::parse(); -$parallel ||= $build_opts-{parallel}; if (defined $parallel) { $ENV{MAKEFLAGS} ||= ''; if ($parallel eq '-1') { This way, dpkg-buildpackage would simply ignore parallel=n in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS. An example of package that supports parallel=n but fails to build with dpkg-buildpackage -j is glibc. This change is very annoying: it makes it impossible for me to run archive-wide rebuilds using parallel=n... -- | Lucas Nussbaum | [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.lucas-nussbaum.net/ | | jabber: [EMAIL PROTECTED] GPG: 1024D/023B3F4F | ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: dpkg Source-Version: 1.14.15 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of dpkg, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: dpkg-dev_1.14.15_all.deb to pool/main/d/dpkg/dpkg-dev_1.14.15_all.deb dpkg_1.14.15.dsc to pool/main/d/dpkg/dpkg_1.14.15.dsc dpkg_1.14.15.tar.gz to pool/main/d/dpkg/dpkg_1.14.15.tar.gz dpkg_1.14.15_i386.deb to pool/main/d/dpkg/dpkg_1.14.15_i386.deb dselect_1.14.15_i386.deb to pool/main/d/dpkg/dselect_1.14.15_i386.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. Bug#157093: marked as done (ncurses-base: xterm-mono is not useable as an xterm without colors)
Your message dated Mon, 07 Jan 2008 11:02:04 + with message-id [EMAIL PROTECTED] and subject line Bug#157093: fixed in dpkg 1.14.15 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: ncurses-base Version: 5.2.20020112a-8 Severity: normal Hi, Fortunately, most programs, eg, jed, slrn, mutt, tin, do use and respect the default xterm foreground and background colors when they are configured to use colors. However, there are some programs which don't handle default xterm foreground and background colors properly, eg, aptitude, dselect, nano, etc. Now, what is the use of having the terminfo entry for xterm-mono, when it is not an xterm without colors? Try setting yor TERM variable to xterm-mono and then run dselect. The Home and End keys become dangerous to use, and often garbage is displayed on the screen, because the terminfo entry is now wrong. So, I really don't care what it is called, I just want a terminfo entry that is just like the xterm entry, but without colors, and unfortunately xterm-mono doesn't do this job. Bug#157093: marked as done (ncurses-base: xterm-mono is not useable as an xterm without colors)

Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: ncurses-base Version: 5.2.20020112a-8 Severity: normal Hi, Fortunately, most programs, eg, jed, slrn, mutt, tin, do use and respect the default xterm foreground and background colors when they are configured to use colors. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: dpkg Version: 1.3.22 Severity: wishlist Seen in src/archives.c: narglist[i++]= strdup(f); narglist[i++]= strdup(-print0); narglist[i++]= 0; execvp(FIND, narglist); ohshite(_(failed to exec find for --recursive)); The original code read: const char **arglist; ... arglist[i++]= f; arglist[i++]= -print0; arglist[i++]= 0; execvp(FIND, (char* const*)arglist); and is more correct. These calls to strdup are completely pointless; they should be replaced by assignments. Because this will cause some trouble with const-correctness because of the char** vs const char** perennial, the cast in the call to execvp should be reinstated. There is no actual _harm_ in using m_strdup here (see my other report about the lack of error checking), apart from a tiny performance penalty and a lack of clarity in the code, so I am setting the severity to wishlist. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: dpkg-dev Version: 1.13.21 Severity: minor Looking at the description for Depends: you'll see: Depends: package list List of packages that are required for this package to provide a non-trivial amount of functionality. The package maintenance software will not allow a package to be installed if the pack- ages listed in its Depends field aren't installed (at least not without using the force options), and will run the postinst scripts of packages listed in Depends: fields before those of the packages which depend on them, and run prerm scripts before. The last sentence is very long and incomprehensible. The first half is clear (up to ...force options),) but then the author tries to explain something about the order of certain scripts being run. If I denote with (a) the postinst scripts of the packages in Depends, with (b) their prerm and (a') for the postints scripts of the package(s) being installed, and (b') for the prerm scripts of same packages, I think I get as order: (b) (a) (a') but I am not sure. Also this seems to be for installation, but says nothing about upgrades (with possible new Depends:). I read file://localhost/usr/share/doc/debian-policy/policy.html/ch-maintainerscripts.html to understand this, but even there this level of detail is not given (it mainly talks about the scripts of the package being installed/upgraded an so on, and only very little about other packages). Given that this is a very complex issue, and that this is the only place in the entire man page the postinst and prerm scripts are mentioned at all, I suggest removing the second half of this sentence and add an appropriate reference in the SEE ALSO section to the debian policy or some other definitive reference. Alternative, you could start being more verbose also in other places of the man page regarding these scripts, but I think this would be out of scope here. If you'd like a patch for this suggestion, please tell me. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.14.6-grsec-cz03 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages dpkg-dev depends on: ii binutils 2.17-1 The GNU assembler, linker and bina ii cpio 2.6-16 GNU cpio -- a program to manage ar ii dpkg 1.13.21package maintenance system for Deb ii make 3.81-2 The GNU version of the make util ii patch 2.5.9-4Apply a diff file to an original ii perl [perl5] 5.8.8-4Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii perl-modules 5.8.8-4Core Perl modules Versions of packages dpkg-dev recommends: ii bzip2 1.0.3-3high-quality block-sorting file co ii gcc [c-compiler] 4:4.0.3-4 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-3.3 [c-compiler] 1:3.3.6-13 The GNU C compiler ii gcc-3.4 [c-compiler] 3.4.6-1The GNU C compiler ii gcc-4.0 [c-compiler] 4.0.3-3The GNU C compiler ii gcc-4.1 [c-compiler] 4.1.1-5The GNU C compiler -- no debconf information -- Dr. Helge Kreutzmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dipl.-Phys. http://www.helgefjell.de/debian.php 64bit GNU powered gpg signed mail preferred Help keep free software libre: http://www.ffii.de/ signature.asc Description: Digital signature ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Source: dpkg Source-Version: 1.14.15 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of dpkg, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: dpkg-dev_1.14.15_all.deb to pool/main/d/dpkg/dpkg-dev_1.14.15_all.deb dpkg_1.14.15.dsc to pool/main/d/dpkg/dpkg_1.14.15.dsc dpkg_1.14.15.tar.gz to pool/main/d/dpkg/dpkg_1.14.15.tar.gz dpkg_1.14.15_i386.deb to pool/main/d/dpkg/dpkg_1.14.15_i386.deb dselect_1.14.15_i386.deb to pool/main/d/dpkg/dselect_1.14.15_i386.deb A summary of the changes between this

There is no garbage if color is enabled, but then I have to look at the colors. If this turns out to be the cause, then I think dpkg (I guess) should warn the user about downgrades.. Downgrading has never been supported in Debian, and in the general case there's no way to fix a downgrade path for a package after the fact if there are bugs. If I were the maintainer I would close this bug, but at the very least it shouldn't be listed as RC, so downgrading. Yep, I agree, thus closing. regards, guillem ---End Message---

I have a pretty normal woody system. When I did an upgrade today, the first thing that dpkg was upgrade itself. Then it started segfaulting when it tried to do just about anything. I suspect there was a conflict with the sysvinit on which dpkg depends. My gut feeling is that sysvinit needs to be a pre-depend or something similar to avoid problems for other people during this upgrade. Like I said, this isn't researched and debugged but since my dpkg was unusable for awhile I figured it needed to be reported. It was actually an annoying experience. How did I get around it? I rebooted, ran dpkg --configure -a (as the segfault error message said) and dpkg successfully finished the upgrade of sysvinit and has not segfaulted since. -- -- Grant Bowman[EMAIL PROTECTED] ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Hi, On Sat, 2002-02-16 at 23:24:31 -0800, Grant Bowman wrote: * Wichert Akkerman [EMAIL PROTECTED] [020216 14:43]: Previously Grant Bowman wrote: OK, I didn't research this problem very closely, but I wanted to at least report it. Everything went fine through when dpkg unpacked the new dpkg. Then it segfaulted. Also given that the switch to the GNU install-info should be imminent, and that we'll most probably get rid of this program on that transition, I don't see the point in making it handle the old and new dirs. I'd say we just let it die. Thus closing this bug report. Thanks for the patch anyway! regards, guillem ---End Message---
Bug#458860: libstdc++6: Dependency on lib64gcc1 on i386

As my machine is i386 i.e. 32 bit only (pentium m) I don't want to have libc6-amd64 and lib64gcc1 installed. I checked the Debian Changelog but couldn't find any reference why this dependency was added. Please revert this change again. This seems to be new behaviour of dpkg-shlibdeps: I've binNMU'd gcc-4.2_4.2.2-5 on amd64 to get rid of the lib32gcc1 dependency.
