GUI to ldap administration
Dear all, with the release of Debian Edu lenny 5.0.4+edu0 and the forthcoming release of Debian Edu lenny 5.0.4+edu1 development of Debian Edu Squeeze is brought more and more into focus. I would like to mention and stress the importance of a graphical user interface to ldap as essential and very important component of the DebianEdu/Skolelinux distribution. In my impression this component seems to be rather disregarded at the moment. Subprojects, regional or local groups try to address the problem with alternative tools that allow teachers short in time the easy administration of users, groups, machines or even more. Currently we provide lwat as very simple but also very limited GU-interface to ldap. The last upload to Debian happened almost two years ago on 2008-03-28, and upstream (in)activity is comparable. A lot of wishlist bugs have been filed, patches almost trivially to include are in the Debian BTS since ages. To me, it seems as if there are no resources left to ensure a minimum of maintenance, not to talk about further development and general improvements. I consider the administration of the ldap tree as core component of our system. Here, the teacher and very limited part-time admin closely interacts with the system, here he decides to take the burden of being the person responsible for it. If I look at the lwat login screen now, it welcomes me with typos in the text and a copyright notice from 2007; all in all not very encouraging. I think we need either to reactivate development and maintenance of lwat and manage to ensure this in the long term, or we need to find alternatives, evaluate these and decide to support a solution with active and reliable upstream. Without any further analysis I heard about gosa, CipUX, perhaps webmin can be repackaged [1] or phpLDAPadmin extended, ... no idea. What are your opinions with regard to this situation? Any suggestions and ideas how to improve it? However, it should be clear that we will have no chance to be competitive if we do not care. Regards Andi [1] It seems to be removed because nobody cared: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=343897 from a first glance it seems to be actively developed. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-edu-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#573079: debian-edu-config: Building LTSP chroot fail when using CD without local component
package: debian-edu-config severity: serious version: 1.436 User: debian-edu@lists.debian.org Usertags: debian-edu When installing using the testing based netinst CD, generating the LTSP chroot fail because apt is unable to fetch file:/cdrom/dists/squeeze/local/binary-i386/Packages.gz. The CD do not have a local part, so apt should not really be looking for this file. I traced this to our LTSP overrides in /usr/share/ltsp/plugins/ltsp-build-client/Debian-custom/015-edu-apt-source, where we add the local component every time a CD is used. The fix is probably to make this code conditional, by mounting the CD and checking .disk/base_components or something similar to see if the CD contain a local component. Bug#570782: squeeze: missing automount support
Here is some more information. I did a testing netinst CD install, with some workarounds to get the installation going. When the installation was done, no autofs-ldap or autofs5-ldap package was installed. When I added the lenny-test APT repository and asked to upgrade the packages, 'aptitude upgrade' installed autofs5-ldap. Not quite sure why it wasn't installed initially, nor why it was installed with the upgrade. Running 'aptitude why autofs5-ldap' report that it is installed because of the recommends in education-networked. Bug#570782: squeeze: missing automount support
tags 570782 + patch thanks [Petter Reinholdtsen] Not quite sure why it wasn't installed initially, nor why it was installed with the upgrade. I believe I figured out what is wrong. The packages uploaded to unstable and currently in testing is lacking the autofs-ldap reference in education-networking and the taskesel tasks, because the autofs-ldap package is missing in testing. The code autogenerating the tasks do not take into account that autofs5-ldap provides autofs-ldap. This patch should solve the issue, by telling the task building tools to use autofs5-ldap as an alternative to autofs-ldap. This might work with Lenny too, as autofs-ldap is prefered over autofs5-ldap, even thought both are installed, but I suggest we only upload this change to unstable and not to lenny. * List autofs5-ldap as an alternative to autofs-ldap, as the latter is missing in Squeeze.
