Perhaps something for a wiki page to gather the arguments for and against? combined approach: - useful for people installing both amd64+i386 edu machines - less packages on the DVD, thus different installs for DVD+CD for everyone - CD space issues, thus we install a kernel by default, which can only deal with a single core and 1GiB RAM maximum. splitted DVDs - less useful for people installing amd64, which according to popcon.skolelinux.org are 5% of our users - more packages on the DVD, probably the same installation whether DVD or CD based - 686 kernel on the DVD, supporting multiple CPU cores and more then 1 GiB RAM - amd64 DVD still exists, it's just an extra download for those few who need it. 5% of our users suffer a bit, for 95% having real benefits. To me it is+was obvious that the benefits outweight the costs. Plus: AMD64 is a great architecture, but I fear that in real world school scenarios i386 is most often installed instead+exclusivly, because it makes using certain very common nonfree tools much easier: adobe flash, googleearth and icaclient are all only available for i386. So every school I know just ignores amd64 and uses i386. Having a fully contained i386 DVD would be the most useful for those. cheers, Holger signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

It's mandatory for us in académie de Versailles to use DebianEdu, I have actually to install an other router. It would be great if one could be (optionaly) prompted to enter a different IP address for the network, gateway and tjener (and thus all machines). Several organisations use different network settings and need to change our settings, making the installation harder than it should be. Having a router and a network is very common today, but it's quite uncommon for them to be set to 10.0.2.1 and 10.0.2.0/23 like our settings requiere. IMO the best would be an extra kernel commandline parameter to trigger a set of debconf questions. Something for wheezy, /me thinks :) cheers, HOlger signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Bug#588510: #588510: rename thin-client-server profile
Hi debian-l10n-english people :) I've got an english wording question, where you maybe can help Debian Edu to find a good choice. In the past, Debian Edu offered four types of profiles to install: main-server, thin-client-server, workstation and standalone. The world was easy and the world was good. (These profiles and their names are shown during installation and used throughout our manual, so they are quite visible.) And then the world became better and we got a problem: the former thin-client-server was suddenly also able to serve (diskless) workstations, as the underlying technology, LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project), grew to support that. (In case you dont know: a thin-client is a machine running a local X server, with its root filesystem mounted from the thin-client-server and all the apps running on the thin-client server. The thin-client is merely a display so to say. OTOH a diskless workstation also mounts its file system from the LTSP server, but all apps run locally on the workstation.) So we want to rename the thin-client-server profile, to make it obvious that not only thin-clients are supported, but also diskless workstations (and also other types, like localapps-thin-clients, where only some apps run locally...) So we need a new name. ltsp-server is not a good one, because the technology used could change again tomorrow. (In fact, since a few days these servers _also_ allow access via remote desktop, a totally different technology.) So, my current proposals for a new name are: - GUI server - desktop server - console server Other, better suggestions? cheers thanks for your time, Holger signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
Re: dvd space issues
[Holger Levsen] Right. I thought the benefits were obvious, just like you probably did, when you changed the profile question yesterday, to display the expert options by default. _That_ is a change everybody will notice and will put cognitive strain on everybody, as there are now more options... Nope, the benefits of adding an extra option to the profile question are not obvious to me, but the effort involved in undoing the change is negligible, and no other parts in Debian Edu is affected. Because of this, I decided to give it a go, to get some feedback. I suspect it will be undone before Squeeze, unless the benefits are obvious to more than just me. It is a three line change in the debian-edu-profile shell script. I havent seen the evalutation for that. I wrote my evaluation to you on IRC when we discussed such change earlier. You even replied to it, so I thought you had seen it. For the rest of you, here are my pros and cons: - Adding more options to the profile question increases the congnitive strain of people installing Debian Edu, and increases the chance of selecting the wrong option. - Adding the minimal profile option to the default profile question make it more visible, and allow more people to be aware of the alternative and probably use it where it make sense instead of installing Debian because they are not aware of the Minimal option. - Changing profile question affect documentation writing, which have not started yet. I am not sure if the increased visibility outweights the increased cognitive strain. And if the evaluation of this is happening right now, I wonder why we dont do the same for the DVD split: just do it and then see how it works out. The DVD split is sligtly more work to undo (more editing of the build system - probably have to edit 5-10 files), and affect a lot of different parts of Debian Edu. The package profiles and the installation set are both affected if we split the DVD and start using the extra space, and undoing such change will be very hard. Providing more images affect the DVD distributors (Jim and others) and the sysadmins in schools that need to figure out which DVD they should use when they want to install Debian Edu. Because the impact is high and reversing the change is hard, I believe we should be more careful with a DVD split than a change in the default template to show during installation. combined approach: - useful for people installing both amd64+i386 edu machines - less packages on the DVD, thus different installs for DVD+CD for everyone - CD space issues, thus we install a kernel by default, which can only deal with a single core and 1GiB RAM maximum. Also: - Easy for distributors, only one DVD image to ship. No need to ask people what architecture they need, nor any change to send the wrong image. Half the production cost for a complete set of DVDs (as there is only one). - Easy for sysadmins, who only need one DVD, and do not need to keep track of several DVDs, one for each arch. - Less to archive in the project than with two DVDs per release, so we save some disk space on the archive disk. - Allow us to install i386 LTSP environment on amd64 servers. Changing this require code changes to debian-edu-config, or keeping i386 on the amd64 DVD. splitted DVDs - less useful for people installing amd64, which according to popcon.skolelinux.org are 5% of our users Is this because the amd64 servers installed from dVD would have to get amd64 LTSP chroots, or something else? Ie why is it less useful? - 686 kernel on the DVD, supporting multiple CPU cores and more then 1 GiB RAM This is only a benefit if we fail to drop packages we do not really want to install by default. If for example blender is removed, (or LTSP is changed to install i686 kernel), we can get the same advantage with the combined approach. - amd64 DVD still exists, it's just an extra download for those few who need it. 5% of our users suffer a bit, for 95% having real benefits. What do you mean? Why would amd64 users need an extra download? I would expect amd64 users download one DVD and i386 users download another DVD, and thus no extra download for any of them. To me it is+was obvious that the benefits outweight the costs. Did you take into account the logistical advantages of a combined DVD that were missing in your list? [Louis-Maurice De Sousa] To raise the quality of the project we need to be brave enough to actually select the packages we believe in and drop the others, I really don't understand this point of view. Just like Steve Jobs : We know, what you need If you fail to understand the difference between the filtering and quality service provided by Debian Edu and a news paper, picking the best and most interesting to save customers and users from having to do this themselves, and the blocking service provided by Apple and China, where access to non-approved things are blocked from the view of their customers and citizens, I have no idea how to illuminate your mind. So we need a new name. ltsp-server is not a good one, because the technology used could change again tomorrow. (In fact, since a few days these servers _also_ allow access via remote desktop, a totally different technology.) So, my current proposals for a new name are: - GUI server - desktop server - console server Other, better suggestions? As a non-technical with a more sales- and marketing background I will suggest : Desktop server (providing different installation options) and then we have the : Network server (providing different network services) (But then you could say that the Desktop server also provides network services..) -- Kåre Nordby Skolelinux Drift AS Norway -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-edu-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. apt-get upgrade 32-bit workstation to 64-bit?
Dear list, on a brand new 64-bit machine, I started with a Debian Edu Lenny workstation image (no LVM of course), that contains some manual tweaks like java installations. Hence, and because the install deadline is straight ahead, I dare not start from scratch with a 64-bit installation. But I consider an apt-get upgrade to 64 bit, if this is possible. To do so, I had to change the arch settings, somewhere? Our CPU is some Athlon X2 64bit with 3.2 GB RAM. Is it worth to upgrade at least the kernel to 64 bit or even the whole system? Bug#602621: drop start-wlan initscript
package: debian-edu-config Hi, debian-edu-config ships a start-wlan initscript, which is disabled by default and which has seen its last real development in 2005. In 2010 things have advanced considerably and this script is probably used no-where. Filing a bug to give people time+opportunity to respond and me not to forget about the issue :) cheers, Holger signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
Bug#602622: drop report-reboot init script
package: debian-edu-config debian-edu-config ships a init script, which is disabled by default and just informs someone via mail, that the machine has been rebooted and which the last 5 users have been. apt-get install logcheck also does this (and much more) so I consider this script pretty useless. (And harmfull as it slows down boot, needs to be maintained and confuses people when looking at the initscripts (eg to fix bugs in them)...) Filing a bug to give people time+opportunity to respond and me not to forget about the issue :) cheers, Holger signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
Bug#579290: which initscript / still useful to fix?
tags 579290 + unreproducable moreinfo thanks Hi Petter :-) I've been reading the 6 init scripts the debian-edu-config package is shipping (debian-edu-config.enable-nat debian-edu-config.fetch-ldap-cert debian-edu-config.open-backdoor debian-edu-config.report-reboot debian-edu-config.start-wlan debian-edu-config.update-hostname) and could not identify output send by echo directly by a default install, only the open-backdoor and report-reboot scripts have such outputs. Did you mean those two scripts? The others only use echo to explain their usage. And personally I think both these scripts shouldnt be used - and usplash has been removed also, so maybe just close this bug? cheers, Holger signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

[Holger Levsen] Did you mean those two scripts? The others only use echo to explain their usage. And personally I think both these scripts shouldnt be used - and usplash has been removed also, so maybe just close this bug? When I wrote this bug, most script did not use the lsb_* functions. I've updated a few over the years, but not checked how many were left. If only two are left, great! The open-backdoor script is still used as far as I know, to administrate schools locked behind a firewall. The report-reboot script is used some places, but its task might work better as a Nagios plugin. :) Happy hacking, -- Petter Reinholdtsen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-edu-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: should we really avoid the 686 kernel image?
[Vagrant Cascadian] this isn't exactly true... we have to have a -486 kernel to get LTSP working with the *defaults*. debian-edu could easily configure LTSP to use a -686 kernel; it would be merely one more divergence from the LTSP defaults. Right. Good point. I gave this a try, adding a LTSP override in d-e-config and changed the avoid entry debian-edu/tasks/common from 686 to 486. I look forward to see if it work. Should show up on the DVD in a few minutes. If it does not, hopefully we can find the cause and fix it. If not, it is easy to undo. I also changed blender and wxmaxima from depends and recommends to esuggests in the tasks, to save some space on the DVD. This made enough room for the Gnome dependencies, but we are still lacking the LXDE and the language specific packages, and probably some others as well. I also suggest to change kicad to suggest to not install it by default, to avoid pulling in extra-xdg-menus and avoid the Hamradio and Electronics toplevel KDE menus and get the KDE menus to try to fit the KDE menu list in the default size of the K menu window. The change is commited in svn but not yet uploaded. Happy hacking, -- Petter Reinholdtsen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-edu-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
