glibc 2.32 packaging

2020-08-13 Thread Balint Reczey
Hi,

I plan landing 2.32 in Ubuntu in the next weeks and I'd happily
contribute to the Debian packaging as well.

The Ubuntu packaging repository is at:
https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu/+source/glibc/+git/glibc

There is a also staging one with WIP branches:
https://code.launchpad.net/~rbalint/ubuntu/+source/glibc/+git/glibc

On Salsa there is no branch yet for 2.32 as I see and I'm wondering if
there is a git repository which accepts merge proposals.

I think setting up CI on Salsa would also be useful, at least I use it
for most of my packages.

Aurelien, I'd also be interested in the rpcsvc-proto package you
mentioned earlier [1] and I'd start maintaining it if Josue is not
interested immediately.

Cheers,
Balint

Thanks. In case, this was not clear, I hadn't added //TRANSLIT for
gettext messages, but for general output of mail messages in the
terminal (as transliteration is not enabled by default for such
output). But it appears that the "charset" variable is used for
anything related to the terminal (which makes sense for users who
set this variable to correct the charset obtained by default from
the environment).

I am reassigning the bug to the xfce4 package as Xfce maintainers
probably have a better idea how to configure Xfce than the glibc
maintainers.

Thanks for the reproducer, I have been able to identify the broken
function, I have reported the bug upstream as BZ#26383. While it is
clearly a regression, please note that adding //TRANSLIT to the charset
doesn't bring anything, as transliteration is always enabled for gettext
messages.

This is fallout from upgrading glibc to 2.31. It appears to have
been fixed as a side-effect of build system changes in gegl 0.4.18, so
upgrading to the version of gegl from testing/unstable should fix this.

This can only affect partial upgrades from Debian 10 'buster' to
testing/unstable or the future Debian 11 'bullseye'. Pure Debian 10 systems
are unaffected, and so are pure testing/unstable systems.

You appear to have a mixture of packages from the Debian 10 stable release,
and the Debian testing/unstable rolling release that will eventually get
released as Debian 11.

This is referred to as a "Frankendebian" system, and is not something that
can really be fully supported - we try to make it work, but realistically
the bugs that can happen during a partial upgrade will never all be found
or fixed. To make it work, you will have to upgrade some other packages
(in this case gegl, but probably a lot more) to their testing/unstable
versions.
