ziguard.awk: Move link to link feature from vanguard to main dataform

When using BACKWARD=backward PACKRATDATA=backzone the symlinks might
point to the incorrect file (e.g. Africa/Asmera points to Africa/Nairobi
instead of Africa/Asmara).

Move the link to link feature from vanguard to main dataform to produce
correct symlink (e.g. Africa/Asmera - Africa/Asmara) in this case.

Bug#1021973: iconv: undefined symbol after upgrade

libc6 blacklisted due to issues we encountered previously

What kind of issues? Are they still relevant? Is there a bug report we could
look at?

In this case, I suggest you also block/pin libc-bin to the same version as
libc6.

Helmut, libc-bin could have a depends on libcX (>= ${binary:Version}), although
this is such a corner case that I don't think an update is necessary just for this.

Cheers,
Emilio

Bug#987266: preinst check for kernel release > 255 may no longer be needed

Hi,
due to

https://salsa.debian.org/glibc-team/glibc/-/commit/6ddfa57577af0d96df9ddd7be401f5ce9a9bcc0f
(a commit from 2004) the preinst script for glibc checks whether the
"z" in the "x.y.z" of the kernel version is less than 255. If yes,
the package refuses to install.

I hit this problem on a box with a custom 4.9.266 kernel.
Based on this lkml thread:

https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/7pR0YCctzN9phpuEChlL7_SS6auHOM80bZBcGBTZPuMkc6XjKw7HUXf9vZUPi-IaV2gTtsRVXgywQbja8xpzjGRDGWJsVYSGQN5sNuX1yaQ=@protonmail.com/T/,
the check is no longer needed because the kernel caps the version
code it reports to 255, even if uname prints a higher number.

Of course, you could conceivably still hit the problem with earlier

kernels, so I suppose the logic of the check should be modified, not
removed entirely, to be technically correct.

If forced at gunpoint to make a guess, I would guess, though, that

removing the check would have very little actual impact; it also
doesn't protect the user from installing a kernel with an
unsupported version number after having installed glibc.

Prompted by
https://lore.kernel.org/stable/yvaholtsb0nk0...@kroah.com/T/#t and
given this was addressed with
https://salsa.debian.org/glibc-team/glibc/-/commit/b3c76cf1cd0c8b6e4844c6362a45143c136a2900
is this something we should do consider as well for the older releases
where it is not acutally needed for people compiling their own custom
kernels?

Another stretch user brought this up [1]. I suppose there are and as time
passes (with current stable kernel versions getting higher) there will be
more users affected by this in buster and bullseye. Have you further
considered including this fix in a proposed-update?

Yep I have submitted #1005906 for bullseye, and I have committed the fix
to the buster branch, but not yet submitted the bug.

I was wondering what docker had to do with all this, until I realized you meant
#1005949 :)

Stretch is going to be more complicated as we still support 2.6.32
kernels, which means the third version level actually still makes sense.

I'm surprised we support that. However in any case we wouldn't need to backport
[1], we could just backport [2] and support both 2.6.32 as well as e.g.
4.14.264. Wouldn't that work?

Cheers,
Emilio

I'd rather you file RC bugs on them for this issue, and then they should get
autoremoved from testing.

No problem for me, but let's wait for the rebuilds at least until after the Perl

Re: Handling s390 libc ABI change in Debian

2014-07-28 Thread Emilio Pozuelo Monfort
On 14/07/14 22:36, Aurelien Jarno wrote:
 Hi all,

glibc 2.19 has changed the libc ABI on s390, more specifically the
setjmp/longjmp functions [1] [2]. Symbol versioning is used to handle
some cases, but it doesn't work when a jmp_buf variable is embedded
into a structure, as it changes the size of the structure. The result
is that mixing programs or libraries built with 2.18 with ones built
with 2.19 do not work anymore, usually they end up with a segmentation
fault. Some persons from this list have experienced that with perl.

We first thought it was limited to a few packages (even if all perl is
already more than that), but as time goes more and more issues are
found. libpng and gauche are also affected, the issue with mono is
also likely due to this ABI change.

According to upstream [3], the problem is that Debian doesn't do a mass
rebuild, which is the strategy chosen by Red Hat to handle^Wworkaround
this issue. This means some programs might segfault during the upgrade,
 or on partially upgraded systems.

Now we have to chose a strategy for Debian. I see multiple options:

 1) Ignore the issue and just rebuild (binNMU) the packages that seems
affected when we discover them. This means partial upgrades will likely
be broken, and that we might discover some broken packages only after
 the jessie release.

 2) Rebuild (binNMU) all packages. This means partial upgrades will
 likely be broken.

 3) Bump the soname of affected packages and rebuild their reverse
dependencies. It is the solution that is currently being implemented for
perl. It clearly won't scale if more broken packages (and even for
libpng) are discovered as it requires a source upload and a transition
handled by the release team. It also means breaking the ABI compatibility
 with other distributions.

 4) Bump the libc soname to libc.so.6.1 and do a libc transition. This is
probably what upstream should have done instead of breaking the ABI.
This is a huge work though, and this also means breaking the ABI
 compatibility with other distributions.

 5) Revert the ABI change. This is likely just postponing the problem as
the change is required to support future hardware. This also means
breaking the ABI compatibility with other distributions.

 6) simply drop the s390x port and tell users to either use an other

Status update:

So in the end upstream has agreed to revert the change that broke the ABI, and
that's what we will do as well. The biggest thing we need to revert with it is
the perl ABI, but since we're going to update to perl 5.20 in a couple of weeks,
we'll do the two at the same time to avoid having two perl transitions (one
everywhere and another one on s390x).

Thanks. I don't use s390x either, but clearly there are people who do, and
broken upgrades for a few weeks don't seem acceptable to me.

So do I wait until poppler is done? Please ping me when it's OK to upload.

I have thought a bit more about this. I was hesitant as there are lots of
packages involved, but thinking more about it, this should be pretty smooth. You
add perlapi-5.18.2d to perl-base's Provides, but you won't remove perlapi-5.18.1
or perlapi-5.18.2. Then perl-base can migrate immediately, and all the rebuilds
can migrate as well. Then after the rebuilds are done, you can remove
perlapi-5.18.1 and perlapi-5.18.2 from Provides.

What do we do with packages that fail to build? Remove the old s390x
binaries from testing? The source packages are going to cause trouble
for the 5.20 transition too, of course...

For leaf packages, we could possibly remove them. But why not just fix them
wherever possible? Do you expect many FTBFS?

I'm not very enthusiastic about this. It's basically lying: we don't offer
the old ABI anymore so we should be straight about it. An uninstallable
package seems better than a broken one.

But I can see it would help the transition, and it wouldn't cause a
regression, it would just make the fix take longer.

It would make the fix only take longer for people who do partial uploads, right?
The users who do a dist-upgrade and get all the updated perl modules that we
have binNMUed should be fine, right? And then after things have been rebuilt and
any potential FTBFS have been fixed, we drop the old perlapi Provides, and then
partial upgrades won't be possible (thus fixing that case as well). The
alternative is delaying the migration until everything has been rebuilt and all
the FTBFS bugs have been fixed. I think keeping the provides for now is a better
option, but I don't know Perl so I may be missing something. If you want to drop
them now, that's fine with me.

So yes, I can do that if you want.

Sure, fixing them is certainly preferrable :) It's just that I've
recently rebuilt the same set of packages for the 5.20 transition and
ISTR encountering quite a few known long-standing FTBFS bugs. I suppose
those packages aren't in testing anymore, though; I didn't look at that
 part much in my tests.

I suppose you don't have a list?

#735623 could be a problem. #742409 as well. That's not an exhaustive list and I
haven't checked if those could be removed from testing (if they are leaf
packages). That's why I think a smooth transition (i.e. keeping the provides for
now) would be preferable.

That said, feel free to upload perl now.

Regards,
Emilio

The problem is a missmatch between the jmp_buf size in perl vs. modules.
Aka the build against glibc 2.19 changed the public ABI of perl.

Yes, jmp_buf had to be increased to support new CPUs. This has been done
using symbol versioning, but unfortunately it doesn't work when jmp_buf
is embedded in a struct like in perl.

Upstream consider this as a non-issue and recommend to do the upgrade of
all the perl packages in a lockstep.

I see. A bit of googling turns up the related
  https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1064271

I note that Carlos O'Donell says there

I expect Ruby is going to fail also since it embeds jmp_buf similarly.

Has anybody noticed similar issues with Ruby?

So far I haven't, but as symbol versioning is used, until we start
mixing versions, the problem won't appear.

How do we want to fix this so upgrades won't barf in the users face?

The problem only concerns the jessie to jessie partial upgrades,
dist-upgrades should be fine. wheezy to jessie upgrades are also fine,
due to the perl 5.14 to 5.18 transition. If we want to fix that for
jessie to jessie, one way is to start the perl 5.20 transition.

So all libc6 reverse dependencies have been binNMU'd on s390x for this
in early June? It looks like some have a confusing changelog entry. I
checked libterm-readline-gnu-perl and libreadonly-xs-perl, which state
 Rebuild against perl 5.18.

I could make a sourceful perl upload incrementing perlapi-5.18.2 to
for instance perlapi-5.18.2d (and removing perlapi-5.18.1) on s390x
only. This would make ~500 reverse dependencies of perlapi-5.18.*
uninstallable and require a new binNMU round for them. As libperl5.18
 has a tight dependency on perl-base, I don't think we'd need to
do anything on the libperl side.

I think this would work fine. From the buildds point of view, the 500
binNMUs should not pose any problem, we have enough build power there.

I think this would be the right way fix this, but I suppose it would
affect ongoing transitions and the like. I'm cc'ing the release team
 for advice.

I have come up with:

https://release.debian.org/transitions/html/perlapi-5.18.2d-s390x.html

Although I would prefer to wait a bit and do 5.20 directly, I'm not affected by
this breakage as I don't have any s390x machines. So if you think this is
important enough, we could go ahead and do it now. The only conflict I see right

It'll still take at least a few weeks before we can do a clean perl 5.20
 transition. See #753529.

Bug#703545: libc0.1-dev: include prototype for pthread_condattr_setclock

2013-03-20 Thread Emilio Pozuelo Monfort
Package: libc0.1-dev
Version: 2.13-38
Severity: important

Hi,

Bug #667687[1] implemented pthread_conattr_[gs]etclock for
kfreebsd, but it didn't add a prototype to pthread.h.

This is causing glib2.0 to fail to build on kfreebsd, see
https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=glib2.0arch=kfreebsd-amd64ver=2.35.9-1stamp=1363706034

Is there a reason for them (and others that are implemented
in debian/patches/) not to have prototypes?

Regards,
Emilio

Bug#703559: libc6-dev: sparc: no prototype for prlimit

2013-03-20 Thread Emilio Pozuelo Monfort
Package: libc6-dev
Version: 2.13-38
Severity: important

glibc doesn't provide a prototype for prlimit in sparc. It probably
should as it implements that function.

This currently makes glib2.0 fail to build:
