This is an old kernel bug. See #433187[1] for reference

This is _no_ debian kernel.

Bug#459606: libc6: 2.7-5 breaks dpkg on sparc64

2008-01-07 Thread J.J.Green
Package: libc6
Version: 2.7-4
Severity: normal

On a regular dist-upgrade I get a hang on the libc6 setup

(Reading database ... 145775 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace libc6-dev 2.7-4
(using .../libc6-dev_2.7-5_sparc.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement libc6-dev ...
Preparing to replace libc6 2.7-4
(using .../archives/libc6_2.7-5_sparc.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement libc6 ...
Setting up libc6 (2.7-5) ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/gai.conf ...
[hangs]

The process tree at this time was

9772 root | | | | | `- dpkg
9773 root | | | | | `- frontend
9791 root | | | | | `- libc6.postinst
9836 root | | | | | `- libc6.postinst
9839 root | | | | | |- sed
9838 root | | | | | |- grep
9837 R root | | | | | `- dpkg-query

and the dpkg-query (running dpkg-query --status sysvinit) runs at 100%
cpu for at least 20 minutes, and does not respond to a kill -9 from
root! The only way I could kill it was to power cycle.
