Bug#325292: Is this bug still alive?

2006-09-06 Thread Matej Cepl
Hi,

I am just upgrading testing and apt-listchanges shows me this bug
as still alive. It is really weird, because apparently no KDE
application was harmed when upgrading qt library. Is it still
alive?

Misssing association for PDF?

2006-07-21 Thread Matej Cepl
Hi,

I have a problem with associating PDF for anything useful -- whether I do it
through Control Panel or Properties of the file, KDE doesn't like it
remembers the association and either claims that kdeinit couldn't launch
filename.pdf or (in better cases) I get the dialog box asking me which
application should be used for opening PDF file (and no, when I
check Remember to open with this application box, it doesn't remember
anything).

I tried it with testing user and there everything worked smoothly, so I
guess there must be something wrong with my ~/.kde. However, even when I
removed from ~/.kde/share everything except apps, config, and wallpapers
folders (while KDE was switched off, of course), it didn't help and the
error was same (this time in Which application to use? form).

I am doing research and most of my data are from Internet and many of them
in PDF, so this is really unpleasant.

Have anybody met anything so weird? Is it known bug, or is there known
workaround?

Thanks,

Matěj

could work without problems and I have hardly noticed almost dying Access
on the background. Whenever I run something more complicated in Linux (gcc,
update of slocate dbase), whole computer goes almost to halt (and it is not
that bad computer -- Dell Inspiron 2200 notebook w/ Celeron 1.4GHz, 512MB
RAM). I believe that Linux should have perfect multi-everything, but
apparently there is some problem with my configuration.

Can anybody kick me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Matěj

I used to date a woman who did PR and marketing for MS, so you
can imagine we had some in-depth and sometimes heated
discussions about MS vs. Linux and Macs.
Well, one day we were going hiking, and she presented me with
a really nice backback. The only issue with it was that it had
the MS logo emblazoned all over it. Of course, she knew
I wouldn't refuse it.
Anyway, she said to me, Isn't that nice? See? What'd RedHat
ever give you for free?
I replied, An operating system.
That was one long, quiet hike.

Shortcut for directory in File Open/Save dialog?

Yes, it is created with every start of X-session (roughly speaking, when you
log in through kdm) and it is full of unimportant stuff. However, when the
problem happens, it is usefull to take a look there, because there are
often quite interesting information -- like that you don't
have /etc/X11/Xsessions. Basically, /var/log/Xorg.*.log is interesting
until the kdm starts, and ~/.xsession-errors since then. The difference is
that starting of X itself is done under root's ownership (and thus logging
goes to the system-wide place -- /var/log), whereas sessions are run under
user's ownership and thus all logs go into $HOME/ .

Does it make sense?

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its

Yeah, amaroK and kaffeine (both with xine) are what I use as well and I

KDE forgetting all application keyboard shortcuts

2006-02-20 Thread Matej Cepl
Hi,

the same problem happens both to me (KDE 3.5.1 on Debian/unstable) and to my
wife (fresh upgrade to KDE 3.5 on Debian/testing) -- when new KDE session
is started no application shortcut (as defined in KMenuEditor or in Control
Panel/Regional Accessibility/Keyboard Shortcuts/Command Shortcuts) works
-- we have to go into Control Panel, try to re-define any keyboard
shortcut, and then magically all of them are active and working.

Did anybody meet with this bug? Is it already in bugs.kde.org (or
bugs.debian.org)? Is there a workaround available?

Thanks,

There are two methods (being a Czech student living in Boston, MA, I have a
lot of experience with i10n issues :-)). First, the old Unix method --
edit configuration file. In this case, it is /etc/X11/xorg.conf and one
of the sections InputDevice looks like this (line broken for this
message) for Czech/US keyboard:

Section InputDevice
Identifier Generic Keyboard
Driver kbd
Option CoreKeyboard
Option XkbRules xorg
Option XkbModel pc104
Option XkbLayout cz,us
Option XkbOptionscompose:caps,ctrl:ctrl_aa,\
lv3:ralt_switch,grp_led:scroll,grp:shifts_toggle
Option XkbVariantqwerty,
EndSection

Documentation for this is in /etc/X11/xkb/README.config.

Then there is KDE-way. Go to Control Center/Regional
Accessibility/Keyboard Layout and switch on keyboard layouts and then set
up your keyboard as you wish.

Switching options (for applet in kicker, which signalizes which layout is

artsd sound recorder directly saving to wav?

Hi,

artsrec -r 48000 -b 16 -c 2 out.wav

but I cannot make even artsplay play out.wav.

Can anybody help?

Bug#346029: libqt3-mt: Deadkeys don't work with Qt-based applications and cz keyboard

2006-01-04 Thread Matej Cepl
Package: libqt3-mt
Version: 3:3.3.5-3
Severity: important

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I am not sure whether I should file this here or against the
xlibs-data package, but the problem shows itself only in Qt-based
applications (both KDE and non-KDE, like lyx-qt) so I am going
here. When pressing deadkey with a letter, combination of which
gives Czech letter with diacritical mark (e.g., zcaron), I get
caron and letter-z as two separate characters, ˇz. Mozilla, plain
xterm (not konsole) work in this regard correctly (there are
other keyboard related issues here -- #345436 collects many of
them, but I have also #345893 -- which makes me wonder whether it
is not bug of xorg after all). Unfortuantely, this makes all
Qt-based application practically unusable for all Czech users.

This is my keyboard section in xorg.conf (I have switched off
international keyboard support in KDE Control Center, so it
should be all that is there):

Section InputDevice
Identifier Generic Keyboard
Driver kbd
Option CoreKeyboard
Option XkbRules xorg
Option XkbModel inspiron # or pc104 doesn't matter
Option XkbLayout cz_qwerty
Option XkbOptions
compose:caps,grp:led_scroll,grp:alts_toggle
Option XkbVariantbasic
EndSection

and this is the output of xprop:

chelcicky:~$ xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = xorg, inspiron, cz_qwerty, basic,
compose:caps,grp:led_scroll,grp:alts_toggle
chelcicky:~$

Any thoughts?

Best way would be 'Hibernate' option in logout window..

I thought about this a lot (albeit I have switched now to in-kernel suspend
after long time using suspend2, but that's besides the point, I still use
hibernate), but IMHO hacking logout window requires C++ patching, and I am
not able (and willing) to go there. What I did is just to create new item
in K-menu (with keyboard shortcut) which runs this script:

#!/bin/sh
if [ -z $DISPLAY ] ; then exit ; fi

kdialog --yesnocancel Suspend to RAM?
RESULT=$?
if [[ $RESULT -eq 0 ]]; then
   sudo -u root /usr/sbin/hibernate -F /etc/hibernate/ram.conf
fi

if [[ $RESULT -ne 2 ]]; then
   sudo -u root /usr/sbin/hibernate
fi

Certainly that your script will be different (e.g., something about the
lines of too-well known Are you sure? dialog box), but I think it is the
easiest way to go.

OK, do you have installed X.org or XFree86? Try (in X)

What's the result?

Proper configuration of X:

deb http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde-3.4.1/ ./

and then you can compile 3.4.2 quanta if you wish and if Quanta 3.3 (which
is in that repository) is not good enough for you.

Hi,

as a parallel question to the current discussions about compiling kaffeine,
may I ask one question about already installed one. I have here KDE 3.4.1
from alioth and kaffeine from main repository for testing. Unfortunately,
there is something seriously broken with it -- I cannot play even OGG
stream http://www.rozhlas.cz/audio/download/ddur_maxogg.m3u (which leads to
http://amp.cesnet.cz:8000/cro-d-dur-256.ogg, that I can play even with
Kaboodle). Kaffeine gives an error message (see attached screenshot, the
Czech text says basically the same as the English one).

What's wrong or what more information should I provide to fix it?

Best,

Matěj

P.S.: I heard somewhere, that when you are happy that cut and paste actually
works it's a sign you've been using X-Windows for too long. What can I say
about my pleasant surprise of how world is nice when Trash actually works
in KDE 3.4.1 and with Krusader 1.60.0? :-)
