Bug#740126: qtcreator: fails to find qtcreator docs
Package: qtcreator Followup-For: Bug #740126 Dear Maintainer, I just installed qtcreator initially with no help files as I have aptitude set to not automatically install recommended packages. I then installed the qtcreator-doc and qt5-doc packages plus the qttools5-dev-tools package and restarted qtcreator. I found the help contents was still blank and the qtcreator help system loaded a link into the default web browser instead. I found via a Web search the method to associate the help files manually as did the originator of this report. After manually adding the files the help contents is now populated correctly. The default swappiness setting (60) seems to be a horrible choice for desktops. Debian is not a desktop oriented distribution. This is evidenced by not having an alternate kernel in the archive with a desktop configuration. Other distributions do seem to have some sort of desktop performance advantage, it seems to me at least. Dotan, I think you may have already responded to these in another thread but after upgrading to 4.4 a few days ago and with a clean slate (by moving .kde and some other 'dot' directories out of the way) I'm down to one daily annoyance as you've already addressed in the BTS--Konsole beep. The other involves the very clumsy way by which separate wall paper may be placed on each desktop which currently involves activating Separate Desktop activities, then zooming out via the cashew, selecting the wall paper for each desktop, and then zooming back in which is a craps shoot as to which desktop will be where. There was a reply to that message about an intent to redo that particular functionality for perhaps 4.6 or so. It's not a show stopper but it's far from intuitive. On the flip side, I do like each desktop having its own activity as I can have different folder views or other widgets on a given desktop based on how I use it. for *my use* I have found KDE 4.4 quite pleasant over the past few days, perhaps aided by moving the old config directories out of the way. KDE unable to play complete K3B .wav files
Here is an oddity I've noticed for a while. When K3B finishes buring a CD it plays a sound file, k3b_success1.wav, which is a trumpet of several seconds. Lately I've only heard the first note or two. After a bit of checking here is what I've found: In System Settings configure notification (also from the same menu in configure K3B) only the first note is played. In Dolphin clicking on k3b_success1.wav launches gnome-mplayer and the entire file is played. Also in Dolphin with k3b_success1.wav highlighted clicking the play button in the far right hand pane plays the first three notes. In Audacity, k3b_success1.wav plays in its entirety. Looking at the waveform shows no reason to why it should be truncated by KDE. As an experiment I converted the three .wav files included with the k3b-data~all.deb package to .ogg format (which match the KDE files included in /usr/share/shounds) and they play fine. The k3b package may in fact be easiest to request that the sound files be packaged in .ogg format, but that only masks that fact that something in the KDE sound stack is having an issue with .wav files. My system is configured to use the Phonon Xine Backend in Sound and Video Configuration. I am avaluating KDE 4.4 as I updated this main desktop machine last night. So far, so good. As I was getting some weird behavior for the past several weeks so I moved ~/.kde out of the way after the upgrade and before starting KDE 4.4. So far, so good. I am still annoyed by the lack of a native Konsole beep and Device Notifier, while much improved, still lacks a way to simply mount removable media without having to run Dolphin (I mostly use Midnight Commander and I use a DE to ease working with removable media). I also think that setting a different wallpaper for each desktop could be more intuitive than having to enable desktop activities in the Settings Manager, then zoom out with the cashew, then set the wallpaper via right-click menu from each desktop, and find out it's a craps shoot which desktop has which wallpaper. But those are nits I've noticed so far and are fixable. Dotan, if you'd like more input from me, please ask. I really feel sorry that KDE 3 series is no more being developed, and when the day cames that I no longer will be able to use KDE 3, I will switch to Apple or even Windows, but NEVER to kde4 or Gnome! (and I feel many users out there think like me!!!) Well, don't go throwing the baby out with the bathwater as we say over here! I felt the same way but even though it is quirky, XFCE works fairly well as does GNOME in Linux Mint 8. Still, either pales in comparison to the KDE 3.5 as does KDE4 but at the end of the day, the DE is really not why I use a Linux distribution in the first place. I certainly understand both sides here. The hardest break for KDE 4 was/is probably the social provocation it induced. For over a year, the developers that were working hard on getting things fixed did hear a lot of you are stupid, you do not listen to users and give me kicker back comments. It's not just the developers to blame if they do not have the patience to answer every akonady sucks comment with proper reasoning. During that time, I gave the devs the benefit of the doubt understanding the new directions they were taking and buying the hype that things would be improved. After a a year of use of KDE4, I disagree that much is improved for *me*. I'm fine with the devs doing whatever they want with the codebase--it's theirs after all--but when I as a simple user feel left behind at the station then I must consider the alternatives. It's not just the multitude of server processes that KDE4 seems to insist on running, but the lost functionality. To wit, I participated in an open bug on Konsole where the KDE4 version no longer generates the PC speaker style beep. I understand that to many the beep is annoying but I've heard it for so long that I now rely on it for efficient use of the terminal. The dev's reply was essentially, Too bad. Still, I'm not alone in regretting this small loss of functionality. After all, the code for the beep had to actively been removed in the newer versions of Konsole but as a Konsole user, I was never asked in any way how this decision would affect me. Too bad. Along the same lines, I cannot be convinced that Device Notifier is a suitable replacement for the similar functionality in KDE 3.5. Other tasks that I found easy in 3.5 are now cumbersome at best *for me* in KDE4. Now that my system is poised to update to KDE 4.4, I think this is where I'll get off the train and let KDE go where it wants and I shall go elsewhere. KDE 4.4 has only a handful of regressions from KDE 3.5.10, and they are not dealbreakers. Some of those are addressed in KDE 4.5. To me they are the little things that make 3.5 a pleasure to use and 4.x an impediment to my produtivity. The KDE 4 sux time has passed. If you still have problems with KDE 4, then please let me know what they are so that they can be fixed. The time for I tried it for 15 minutes and KDE4 sux comments has long passed, yes. I've given it a fair shake, I feel, I've tried asking politely for the things I liked about 3.5 to restored in 4.x only to be brushed aside by KDE devs. So *for me* KDE4 is not my vision of an ideal desktop environment. YMMV and I wish the KDE4 team and its users all the best. I may check in again some day and see how things are going. This is Free Software after all where one may come and go as one pleases. I have been doing that as a work-around which is not ideal as it is much slower than the PC speaker beep, especially for tab completion. For some time I've been seeing an effect where clicking on the menu icon in the panel will show the menu briefly. The only way to keep it visible is to click and hold down the mouse button while navigating the menu. This is a very useful hint though. My guess is that the binary cache usd by the KDE menu to speed up loading of the menu entries has not been updated correctly. Try running kbuildsycoca4, probably with --noincremental and see if this helps. No change. I tried running inside a Konsole and logging out of KDE and ran it from a virtual terminal with X killed. One thing I noticed is that the laptop had a ~/.menu directory that was dated sometime in 2006. I moved it out of the way as the desktop machine didn't have that directory. That made no difference either. However, that directory showed only the one installed wine app that appears in the KDE menu. Manually add Wine desktop files to K menu?
Last year when I updated to KDE4 my Wine menu items disappeared. One app exists and it was reinstalled a few months ago. I have several Wine application .desktop files in ~/.config/menus/applications-merged/ but it seems as though KDE doesn't find them. Also, the various .desktop files exist in their own directories under ~/.local/share/applications/wine/Programs/ and KDE doesn't find those either. Some of these programs were installed after KDE4 was installed but still don't show in KDE's Wine submenu. Did you install the proper firmware package? The firmware is arguably non- free, so it doesn't appear in Debian kernels. It may appear in Ubuntu kernels because they take a different stance on such firmware. I think so as I have the firmware-linux package installed which pulled in firmware-linux-free and firmware-linux-nonfree. Last I checked (it was some time back) I think the Kubuntu installation has similar packages installed. Yes, pending a formal vote, firmware without source code will not be added back to the Debian kernel, and such firmware will be removed as bugs are filed against it. Apples and oranges. I did not ask for firmware, in fact this was before certain firmware was placed into non-free as I recall. Searching I came up with: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=375845 as the report. The actual closing report was that activating PREEMPT support triggered a lot of bugs but the possibility was left open of eventually enabling PREEMPT support. There are a couple of lines with PREEMPT in them that differ between the Sid kernel and the Kubuntu kernel here most that Debian sets CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE=y and Kubuntu sets CONFIG_PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY=y (they are consectutive lines in the config files). I agree with Debian's stance on the firmware issue. Others may not, even if they are similarly concerned with software freedoms in general. Searchbar in Konqueror
After a brief search I found that I needed to install the konq-plugins package for the searchbar extension which I did. When I go to Settings|Configure Extensions the Search Bar plugin is shown as available and enabled. When I go to Configure Toolbars, however, Search Bar is not one of the available options either as a seperate tool bar or as an option for an existing toolbar (I'd like to place it to the right of the address bar as it used to be). That said, I primarily browse with Iceweasel and that is about all I use this kaptop for except reading usenet with Pan. Once in a great while I'll fire up Konqueror but I do keep a Konsole open with three tabs. I even launch Xscreensaver instead of using the KDE one. Perhaps that has more to do with your video driver and kernel. I doubt it. I've filed a lot of crashes upstream and they are real. On the bright side, they are getting fixed quite rapidly so I'm optmistic. Other than Kwin, I'm probably not actually touching KDE all that much. The reason I started using it full time was its integration with hotplug devices such as insertion of a USB pen which wasn't handled at all by IceWM at the time. While I've been hit with some annoying bugs and a couple of lack of features like no system beep passed through Konsole, I've not seen the crashes. Perhaps that has more to do with your video driver and kernel. Other than KDM refusing to start since upgrading to KDE4, after installing kernel 2.6.29-2 the video stuff was much improved (I'm using the Radeon driver). At the risk of starting a flame war, it seems as though some of GNOME's philosphy has rubbed off onto the KDE devs. They now seem to worry about confusing and too many options and seem intent on following GNOME's path toward dumbing down the interface. If both major desktops head off in that direction it may be time to look for a third option. On my main workstation I still run KDE 3.5.10 and even though it is Sid, it hasn't been updated for several months and it's running just fine. I'm keeping Sid current on a T41 laptop and will only update the desktop once I feel KDE4 is ready for my prime time. In fact, I still have OOo Calc 2.3 installed on this machine as some later version screwed up the sorting rather badly. - Nate -- The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. Bug#526403: konsole: PC speaker beep is not passed from Bash through Konsole
Package: konsole Version: 4:4.2.2-1 Severity: normal The PC speaker style beep seems to no longer be available through Konsole. Playing a sound file is too slow for tab completion and other instances where Bash generates the ASCII Bell character (Ctl-G). In Konsole 1.6.6 (KDE 3.5.10) the bell is played as expected while in Konsole 2.2.2 (KDE 4.2.2) the bell is mute. No configuration of Konsole was ever required to play the ASCII Bell character in the past. Apparently the Ubuntu folks have backported the kernel drivers to their 2.6.28 kernel and while desktop effects work in Jaunty, they are much slower on my machine than the rebuilt drivers are with Debian 2.6.29 on my machine. Phonon gave me no sound and it claimed my sound device was broken (or some such language) while Audacious played just fine so the hardware/ALSA stuff was working. I installed the Xine backend for Phonon and now KDE sounds are working just fine and I purged the Gstreamer backend. However, in Konsole all Bash beeps seem to be suppressed. Lastly, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to tell the panel to only show the windows in a given desktop and not all at once. I know it's doable as I configured it that way on my Kubuntu installation. Also, KDE4 is much faster on my Debian installation than on my Kubuntu installation and I think the reason is that on the Debian side compositing is disabled and something is preventing it from working. Meanwhile glxinfo says direct rendering is enabled. This is on an IBM T41 laptop with a Radeon Mobility M7 graphics chipset. I installed Kaboom and perhaps it migrated more settings than it seems, but most of my KDE3 customizations seemed to have been lost. My experience upgrading to KDE4
Well, I took the plunge today upgrading to KDE4. I've tracked Sid for several years and never has it broken like today. :-D Installation of the mysqld package is hopelessly broken and hangs, only Ctl-C will break out of the install script. A number of packages complain about hal not being configured. Such is the fun of the new Free Desktop. I found kdm wouldn't start and the Debian User list recommended installing the desktop-base package which I did and now KDM starts, but I have no keyboard or mouse! I can't even get to a shell prompt. I guess the joke's on me. Fortunately, I have a boot menu option for a shell prompt so I can fix things as I receive advice. I guess the first order of business is fixing hal, but I don't see a bug that discusses a broken upgrade yet. Perhaps I need to remove it and reinstall it. According to bug #523187, apparently the splashy package was preventing invoke-rc.d from being able to stop/start packages. Once I purged splashy, mysql-server-5.0, hal, and all the other recalcitrant packages installed. Now KDM balks at startup occasionally. If I can get it to a shell prompt I can use the `startx' command and once I exit KDE4, then KDM will start. Go figure. At least I'm now at a place where I can work again. Odd behavior, multiple menu and toolbar entries
This has been vexing me for several months. I have used KDE on my desktop machine for about two years and it has been Sid the whole time and upgraded from somewhere in the 3.4 days to 3.5.7. Some time back I noticed that some applications would show duplicate menu entries, as though the entire menu was repeated. In other apps, or maybe the same one, a menu in the menu bar will be lost or say No Text! and in some cases the menu will be empty. Some apps have toolbar button entries duplicated as well. I've noticed Konqueror and KControl affected. Also, I can't keep KOrganizer from starting. It is disabled each time, but right clicking on it shows the Reminders Enabled unchecked but the Start Reminder Daemon at Login is checked each time. Even if I uncheck the latter option and stop the daemon, it will startup on the next login. I renamed my ~/.kde directory temporarily and that solved the KOrganizer issue, but the odd menu and toolbar issues remained. This is truly odd, unless some old config file didn't get purged in /etc and that is causing my issues. Maybe a year back I tried purging the entirety of KDE and starting over with no change of the results. I've got this thing configured as I like it and I really don't relish the idea of starting over. Panorama scannind with Kooka?
I really like Kooka and it works flawlessly. I want to do something extra. I am trying to scan a two-page advertisement from a magazine with my flatbed scanner. I have no problem with selecting one page at a time, but does Kooka support scanning a page and then a second so that the two are merged side-by-side? I tried Hugin, but I'm not an image geek so spending days learning to tweak it for a one-off scan merge is not in my schedule (my attempt came out horribly distorted on the righ side). I had everything up to date from Sid and still no joy. This morning I installed Linux image 2.6.16 and whadda-ya-know, everything works fine. I had been running 2.6.14 since January or so. Since udev, dbus, and hal are involved and closely related to the kernel, there was probably some caveat somewhere that I didn't find that warned about this very thing. It was strange that the device was being mounted correctly under /media, but KDE was never getting the message. I couldn't find any remarkable configuration between my Sid partition and a recently installed Kanotix version from mid April 2006. Window mini-icon (kwin)
This is probably a silly (read obvious) question, but how does one change or specify the mini-icon of windows kwin only uses the generic X for? I've Googled and read some KDE docs, but I've not figured out the answer. I use several apps, Mutt in a xterm and xfte that I would like to use their icons on their respective windows. Akregator does not update feeds after Etch to Sid upgrade
I've been using Akregator for a few weeks on a laptop that has been running Sid for a few months. The first version of KDE installed on it was 3.4.x. Since I like Akregator and since the migration of KDE 3.4.x into Etch is taking some time, I upgraded this box to Sid on Thursday evening and starting using Akregator. After yesterday and into this morning, it was obvious that the feeds are not being updated. I deleted all of the Akregator config fils from my home directory and added all of my feeds again. After an initial load of feeds from the various sites, they have not updated all afternoon even though Firefox shows that feeds like Slashdot have updated. Is anyone else seeing this? Any troubleshooting ideas? I opted to use KMail today for a second POP account and noticed it took a long time to open and once it did all of my current Mutt folders were displayed. Worse yet, it created several new directories under ~/Mail and reset all of the access times on the Mutt folders which really messed up Mutt's ability to tell me of new mail for a time. At the very least, KMail should notice when it is run for the first time that ~/Mail already exists (especially if KMail's private directories are not yet created) and prompt the user whether to use ~/Mail or offer to create a new directory and warn the user of the consequences. KMail should not assume that it is the only mailer used. I had a similar question maybe ten days ago and it is now working flawlessly. I have: Linux 2.6.12 udev pmount hal KDE 3.4.2 All I had to do was configure the desktop and select Behavior then the Device icons tab and enable Show device icons. From there I selected the ones I want to show. My CDs and DVDs appear as well as my USB stick and camera (USB mass storage). None of them mount automatically which is what I prefer as it is easy enough to right click the icon and mount the device. Removable media icon(s) on desktop?
Hi All. I transitioned to KDE 3.4.2 yesterday evening (I just couldn't wait anymore) on my Sid partition--so far very good! Based on my limited experience with KNOPPIX 3.9, I know that KDE can dynamically add an icon to the desktop when a memory stick or other USB mass-storage device is inserted. I installed the dbus, hal, and pmount packages and Konquerer dynamically displays icons for my memory stick and camera upon insertion and removal. Now, I would like these icons to pop up on the desktop instead of just in Konquerer. I know KNOPPIX does some interesting stuff with UNIONFS and I'm not sure if that is involved here. Also, it seems as though Konquerer uses an internal mount point as I was unable to find a traditional mount point with the mount command. How then might I be able to access the device such as through Midnight Commander? I've been a steady upgrader, now coming from the alioth 3.4.1 packages. The only things i can see is that I have enabled Show device icons and checked all the devices listed in the list below. They show up when I plug them in. Yeah, whaddayaknow! I got back to my laptop and found that option as well. Everything works perfectly. D'oh!!
