Re: hoe do I use spectacle screen recording?
Further to below, I note that simple screen recorder doesn't work with Wayland while Spectacle doesn't work with X11. I've been using Wayland for a few days now, and don't see any reason to revert to X11 so far. I guess I'll just have to wait for Spectacle to be fixed. :( On 2024-05-26 18:08, Gary Dale wrote: Spectacle is supposed to be able to do it. It's been a feature for about a year now. Spectacle is supposed to be able to do it. It's been a feature for about a year now. I thought it should "just work" but apparently not. hoe do I use spectacle screen recording?
I've just switched into a Plasma/Wayland session on my Debian/Trixie AMD64 system so I could try out screen recording with Spectacle. However I can't figure out how to get it to work. I switch to the "recording: tab, and select the video format, but then what? I can select "workspace", "selected screen" or "selected window" , after which clicking somewhere starts recording but the "Finish recording" button seems to react but actually does nothing. The recording timer keeps incrementing and I can't seem to save the recording. Am I missing something or is the screen recording facility simply not working currently?

Bug#1030396: kde-spectacle: Automatic clipboard copy does nothing
Package: kde-spectacle Version: 22.12.1-1 Severity: normal X-Debbugs-Cc: je...@sney.ca Dear Maintainer, I have kde-spectacle set up to automatically copy any screenshots to the clipboard so I can easily paste them into a chat application or image share site, etc. This has been my workflow for some time. Since the update to kde 5.26.90, the spectacle window shows a "The screenshot has been copied to the clipboard." tooltip, but when I go to paste, the expected image isn't there and I paste whatever else was the most recent thing in my clipboard. The "copy image to clipboard" button behaves as expected. So it's just the automatic function that is suddenly missing. Here's what the tooltip looks like - from this point I had to press the "copy image to clipboard" button to actually copy the image to clipboard. https://i.ibb.co/sV0ydQ4/image.png Please let me know if you need any more information or if I should file this upstream as well. Bug#993900: kde-spectacle: AVIF not working
KDE applications use kimageformats which use libavif to save AVIF image. Unfortunately, libavif in debian was built without encoders, so it is able to read AVIF but not to write AVIF. In order solve this problem, is is necessary to add new libaom (version 3 or 2) and/or rav1e to Debian. libavif doesn't work with very old versions of libaom. When one of those encoders are added to Debian and libavif package rebuilt, you should be able to save AVIF images from KDE applications like spectacle, gwenview, etc.

Package: kde-spectacle Version: 20.12.3-1 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, * What led up to the situation? Using Spectacle as usual, with AVIF format selected in configuration. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? Set AVIF in configuration, take screenshot, try to save picture or drag'n'drop from Spectacle. * What was the outcome of this action? See above. * What outcome did you expect instead? So when I type "ksnap" in my launcher, nothing happens anymore. I think that for the transition, a soft link and a .desktop file should be provided for a while, because it's not very immediate to know that now one has to type a different thing. Since ksnapshot was removed from Debian more than 4 years ago, it is time to close all the open bugs for it. Spectacle, even if it does something similar to what ksnapshot did, is a totally different application started from scratch (and thus not sharing anything code-wise with ksnapshot); because of this, there is no point in moving all the ksnapshot bugs to Spectacle. Most probably you have been using Spectacle already for a few years; we recommend to report bugs and feature requests for it directly to the upstream bug tracker system: https://bugs.kde.org/, product "Spectacle". No, the problem is rather that the new version of kimageannotator bumps the SONAME of the shared library from libkImageAnnotator.so.0.3.2 to libkImageAnnotator.so.0.4.0, which is a big no-no. This also means that kimageannotator sets the SONAME of its shared library to the full version number, basically breaking compatibility even in patch releases; this is _bad_... Also, the Debian packaging of it does not help detecting this kind of situations, as names the library package as if the SONAME was only "0": $ lintian -I -E --pedantic --no-tag-display-limit libkimageannotator0_0.3.2-2_amd64.deb W: libkimageannotator0: package-name-doesnt-match-sonames libkImageAnnotator0.3.2 I: libkimageannotator0: no-symbols-control-file usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libkImageAnnotator.so.0.3.2 -- Pino Toscano signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Considering that: - this is definitely not your first bug related to KDE software - you are a technical person I'm pretty sure you can be helpful and report this bug yourself to upstream, so to ease a bit the work of an already well overloaded packaging team. Bug#921436: kde-spectacle: rectangular region + dual monitor clips the desktop, making impossible to capture left monitor
Package: kde-spectacle Version: 18.04.0-1 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, My current setup is as follows: Two 1920*1080 monitors one to the right of the other, extending my KDE desktop from the main one to the right one. To reproduce the issue: * Press Print Scrn or run spectacle (other capture methods are not affected) * Select "Area: Rectangular Region" * Press "Take a New Screenshot" * The left screen (what used to be on the left monitor) gets shifted half of the screen to the left, showing only the right part; the right screen gets also moved to the left, showing the left part on the left screen and the right part on the right screen. The right part of the right screen gets black. See figure: vv Black region .,, ooo , * . *o ., o , * . *o ., o , * . *o ., o , ooo , ,,, ^^^ Invisible section . == left monitor , == right monitor * == left screen o == right screen When this happens, I cannot take a screenshot of 50% of the window of my main monitor. The typical use case I do of a rectangular region screenshot is to show the content of a windows without showing the border/url/status bar. I belive this is the same bug that the one reported at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kde-spectacle/+bug/1773246 This is a regression from previous versions/kscreenshot, as I used to use rectangular region screenshot a lot before on of the last updates. I don't know if it is however, a regression on the package or of any other kde/screen stuff it uses. Spectacle + emacs full screen
I don't know if the following is relevant... My emacs version is: 27.0.50, compiled from sources. I use emacs in full screen mode namely with: (toggle-frame-fullscreen) in my dot-emacs. In fullscreen mode, I don't have access to the panel, where my Spectacle widget is. And my purpose is to take a screenshot of emacs. Also Spectacle is configured so that it doesn't show any dialogue window, but instead goes directly to "select an area and then press enter; and then save the image silently; and go away". So I go on "konsole" (so I have access to the panel), then click on Spectacle, then do "Alt-Tab". First issue, I should be over emacs window, but it still shows me konsole window. (I've got a thumbnails column of all my windows when doing Alt-Tab, so I know I should be over emacs, but it doesn't show). Then it tells me that I can press Escape, to leave. But after doing so, it seems I have no mean to do actually anything anymore: plasma session is inaccessible (Alt-tab, or moving the mouse the the upper- left corner have no effect anymore; pressing "escape", or "enter" neither), and I can't leave Spectacle. Only solution I've found: go in another tty and do a killall spectacle. And when I come back, emacs which was originally "divided in two", isn't anymore, so it's been tampered during the operation. I don't know if that would be reproducible with a debian's version of emacs. Thanks, Chris

On a system that was still using the Oxygen widget style, normally I only use the oxygen icons, but while using the oxygen widget the panel and tray where behaving erratic/jumpy/fuzzy while taking a timed-snapshot with spectacle. I had already done the same on some other systems using stretch, buster and sid, so I changed the setting to use the qt-curve widget and the change was amazing and all was extremely stable and now spectacle is stable on all my plasma-5 systems using qt-curve while taking a timed-snapshot using spectacle. While spectacle does everything ksnapshot did, it is not compatibile with it: spectacle does not have the same the command line options ksnapshot had, so adding a ksnapshot -> spectacle symlink means there could be options mismatches. Usually we added symlinks in cases where the application was renamed (and thus it was the very same, just with a different name); in this case the spectacle and ksnapshot are not the same, and I don't think it's a good idea. (Also, even if a symlink would be provided, then it should be in the transitional ksnapshot package only, so installing only spectacle does not bring ksnapshot compatibility stuff.) > Transitions shouldn't silently delete commands. Bug#836728: kde-spectacle: Please provide .desktop file for ksnapshot
Package: kde-spectacle Version: 16.04.3-1 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, as kde-spectacle is replacing ksnapshot, what happened is that completely silently, on an update, ksnapshot got deleted. So when I type "ksnap" in my launcher, nothing happens anymore. I think that for the transition, a soft link and a .desktop file should be provided for a while, because it's not very immediate to know that now one has to type a different thing. Bug#836513: RM: ksnapshot -- ROM; dead upstream, replaced by kde-spectacle
Package: ftp.debian.org Severity: normal Hi, please remove ksnapshot from the archive: it is no more developed upstream, and there's spectacle (available as kde-spectacle) that does everything that ksnapshot did. (Also, src:kde-spectacle provides a transitional ksnapshot, so upgrades are convered already.) Thanks, -- Pino

Ah, that's because spectacle is currently built without the libkipi (which provides support for using kipi-plugins). I just uploaded kde-spectacle 16.04.3-1 that also adds support for them. spectacle and online services
ksnapshot supported uploading images online via kipi-plugins. I don't see this feature in current kde-spectacle. Google shows that there should be an "Online Services" menu folder in the Exort button but I don't have it. My gwenview still has a set of online export plugins in its plugin menu. -- WBR, wRAR signature.asc Description: PGP signature

You're right. I was somehow assuming that the bindeps were the result of a SONAME package change, but it is another -dev package altogether. Maybe ksnapshot would build just fine against libkf5kipi-dev, but I think a transitional package is the way forward here. > In any case, ksnapshot reverse dependencies need to be updated (we can't > drop ksnapshot without doing this first, and it's still an important > step even if we provide a transitional package), currently, the only > reverse dependency that needs to be updated is education-desktop-kde. > > I'll add the transitional package to ksnapshot, could you take care of > sending the bug report to education-desktop-kde? Basically, you need to choose between libkf5kipi-data or libkipi-data. libkf5kipi-data is indirectly depended by digikam, so you can't install digikam and ksnapshot together. Anyway, this is all a bit of nitpicking, I think that at this point we want to get rid of ksnapshot. So, I guess that a transitional package it the way to go. A simple binNMU would probably fix this, but ksnapshot has been replaced by kde-spectacle anyway. So I think the best way forward would for kde-spectacle to Break/Replace ksnapshot and then drop ksnapshot from testing. I not seeing how this could be fixed with a binNMU. Afaics, we could either disable the kipi support in ksnapshot, drop ksnapshot adding the breaks/replaces (that means that users will need to manually install kde-spectacle, kdegraphics or kde-standard), or provide a transitional package in kde-spectacle to replace ksnapshot. In any case, ksnapshot reverse dependencies need to be updated (we can't drop ksnapshot without doing this first, and it's still an important step even if we provide a transitional package), currently, the only reverse dependency that needs to be updated is education-desktop-kde. Bug#814712: RM: spectacle/experimental -- ROM; Mistakenly overtaken package name
Package: ftp.debian.org Severity: normal Hi, I've made a mistake packaging the new kde application "spectacle" (https://projects.kde.org/projects/kde/kdegraphics/spectacle), I overlooked the existing package "RPM Spec file generator and management tool" and uploaded the kde application to experimental. I'm really sorry, I'll rename the kde application, of course. But the spectacle package in experimental needs to be removed and I don't know what will happen with the version. :( Sorry for the mess.
