Bug#349354: initramfs-tools - kernel -udev dependency loop

2006-01-22 Thread Nikita V. Youshchenko
Package: initramfs-tools,kernel,udev

Currently:

  - recent linux-image packages depend on 'initramfs-tools | yaird |
linux-initramfs-tool', so initramfs-tools is the 'default' alternative

  - initramfs-tools depends on recent udev

  - recent udev refuses to install unless recent kernel is running

This loop needs to be broken somehow.

UML kernel define/config and arch/subarch

2006-01-22 Thread Mattia Dongili
Hello,

as some of you already knows I'm trying to add the um subarch to build
UML kernels.
I'm having some problems in forcing the kernel build with ARCH=um so I
suppose I'm missing something:
is arch/subarch support fully in place?
or is it just not appropriate for an 'um' subarch (not what I've been
told on irc)?

AFAICS $(ARCH) is used both in
dpkg-architecture -a'$(ARCH)' -qDEB_BUILD_ARCH
and friends and in
make-kpkg --arch '$(ARCH)' ...

and this is definitely not helpful for UML as it needs to build with
make-kpkg --arch um

Any suggestion?

BTW here's what I'm using:

/--- debian/arch/i386/um/defines ---
| [base]
| flavours:
| 686
| kernel-arch: um
| suggests: uml-utilities, umlrun, rootstrap
|
| [686]
| class: 586/K5/5x86/6x86/6x86MX UM
| suggests: uml-utilities, umlrun, rootstrap
| longclass: 32-bit UML 586/K5/5x86/6x86/6x86MX host
\--

and this modification to current scripts in SVN (I don't know why
builddeb is not there so I commented it out...)

Bug#333831: Combination of irqpoll and routeirq doesn't fix reboots entirely

2006-01-22 Thread Simon Waters
David Schmitt wrote:

Could you please retest this with a current linux image?

 2.6.15 will enter unstable tomorrow.

If this still isn't fixed, it'd be worthwhile to poke upstream
(http://bugzilla.kernel.org/) and point them to the logs here.

Okay at 2.6.15 Debian kernel binary 2.6.15-1.686 I get similar behaviour.

I need irqpoll to avoid the load of ide-cd waiting for a SysRq.

irqpoll everything works for a bit and them the machine spontaneously
reboots to BIOS screen whilst the CD is playing.

Will notify upstream. Thanks.

Bug#330081: Possible fix

2006-01-22 Thread Martín Ferrari
As I said in #343521, I had problems with this exact linux-headers
version when compiling zaptel-source with module-assistant, and when
compiling cxacru (non-debian) with make (make -C
/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.12-1-686/ SUBDIR=`pwd` modules). In both
cases, the version was set to 2.6.12 instead of 2.6.12-1-686,
generating wrong module information, and installing in the wrong
modules directory.

I saw that in pre-2.6.12 kernel-headers packages, in the file
include/linux/version.h would define UTS_RELEASE with the complete
version, including extraversion, as you can see:

/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.6.10-1-386/include/linux/version.h:
#define UTS_RELEASE 2.6.10-1-386
/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.6.10-1/include/linux/version.h:
#define UTS_RELEASE 2.6.10-1
/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.6.11-1-386/include/linux/version.h:
#define UTS_RELEASE 2.6.11-1-386
/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.6.11-1/include/linux/version.h:
#define UTS_RELEASE 2.6.11-1

In linux-image-2.6.12 this was not the case: the extraversion was not
present in UTS_RELEASE. I don't know if this was intentional, but
changing that value, solved all my module-compiling problems.

Regards, Martín.

Package: strace
Severity: important

Hi,

I've noticed (and other people confirmed) that strace is broken for
kernels 2.6.13 or later on sparc. The breakage appears to be independent
of strace version. To illustrate the problem, I attached two files, both
containing a log of 'strace /bin/ls'. First one (log_2.6.12) was produced
on etch system with strace 4.5.8-1.2, running the kernel 2.6.12 from the
linux-image-2.6.12-1-sparc64 (version 2.6.12-10) package. There everything
works as expected. The other one (log_2.6.14) was obtained using the same
version of strace, but the running kernel is 2.6.14 from the sid
linux-image-2.6.14-1-sparc64 package (version 2.6.14-2). There strace
output is clearly broken and the command hangs in the end. Others have
confirmed, that the same behaviour is observed with the current strace
version in sid.

Best regards,
