Bug#381102: mismatching address space size

2006-08-02 Thread walter franzini

Package: linux-headers-2.6.16-2-686-smp
Version: 2.6.16-17

While (re)compiling the VMWare-Player module I get the following error:

--
acer:~# uname -a
Linux acer 2.6.16-2-686-smp #1 SMP Sat Jul 15 22:33:00 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux
acer:~# vmware-config.pl
...
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]
/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.16-2-686-smp/include/

The kernel defined by this directory of header files does not have the same
address space size as your running kernel.
--

Is it a problem of vmware-player?
Thanks

Bug#381104: usplash: 15 second timeout is sometimes not enough

2006-08-02 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: usplash
Version: 0.3a
Severity: minor

At the moment, usplash have a 15 second timeout. If no command is
sent to usplash for 15 seconds, it terminates and return to the text
console.

When using usplash in qemu on my laptop, it sometimse take more than
15 seconds between such commands during boot, and the splash screen
disappears. Would it be an idea to increase the timeout, or perhaps
make it configurable?

Re: Out of tree kernel images / Lustre image

Modules needs to be seperated from binaries.

Would it be OK for lustre to build its own out-of-tree kernel image

It is the same than fai-kernels which is scheduled for removal.

If you want to be correct, you can't use linux-source. So the security

What is the policy on this kind of thing?

As the kernel team to provide them. But with this flacky patchset, this
won't work.

When doing shutdown on a machine using usplash, the usplash process
isn't started at the begining of runlevel 6. It is started by
sendsigs halfway throught the shutdown instead. I'm not sure how
ubuntu starts usplash during their shutdown process (could be useful
to check out), but one way that work is to modify the init.d script to
start usplash in the 'stop' target.

The start and stop behaviour for usplash seem to be the wrong way, but
because sysv-rc runs start scripts after stop scripts, it need to use
a S-type symlink in rc2.d to stop usplash, and a K-type symlink in
rc6.d to start it.

This patch make sure the K-type symlink in rc6.d and rc1.d starts
usplash.

Bug#295678: PAE support in Debian kernel images..

2006-08-02 Thread Andre Tomt
I'd like to see it as a flavour. This is also how pretty much every
other noteworthy distribution is doing it (a -bigsmp or -pae flavour, so
there is some precedence.)

You'd be surprised on how many PAE needing servers there are in
enterprises. Having no officially supported kernel images for them is
like saying go standardize on RHEL or SLES instead. I've seen this
happen over issues like this.

Re: svn /patch-tracking/

2006-08-02 Thread Willi Mann

I've found http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/kernel/patch-tracking/ a really
useful way of knowing what the kernel team thinks about kernel
vulnerabilities. But it seems to have gone away. Has it moved somewhere
else, or is there a better way for me to check debians position against

http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/kernel-sec/patch-tracking/
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/kernel/?rev=7040sc=1

The svn log has the reason.

Bug#381171: linux-image-2.6.16-2-k7: Not all Sound/Alsa devices are created properly under /dev/snd

2006-08-02 Thread Eric Lavarde
Package: linux-image-2.6.16-2-k7
Version: 2.6.16-17
Severity: important

Hello,

I have the problem that the sound doesn't work with kernel 2.6.16,
whereas it works perfectly with 2.6.15. As you can see from the attached
outputs, the drivers loaded are the same, but certain devices just don't
get created. I couldn't find any related error messages neither under
/var/log, nor in dmesg.

Being able to upgrade would be really nice.

Thanks, Eric

Can you make an announcement to all oot-module maintainers, telling them

they will end up in an unsupported (no updates for point-releases, no
updates for kernel ABI bump updates) package.

What does no answer mean?

'We need more time to think about it', 'Yes, we will do that', 'No, we
will not do that', or 'Get lost, we don't care about that'?

There still is a lot of patching in the VFS stuff for intents and

ldiskfs for the lustre modules. Bits and peaces have been merged but a
lot remains to be in ext4 I believe.

Bug#380686: initramfs-tools: busybox mount doesn't support nfs

 sure initramfs-tools is flexible.

indeed. i really like it, overall.

i'm in exam time atm so quite busy,
i thought this busybox mount would make you happy for now.
very unhappy that the opposite is true.

oh well...

 so current direction is
 - improve nfsmount in klibc # find out what is missing or buggy

i just tried initramfs-tools 0.69b from etch, and nfsmount appears to
work fine for ltsp. we had enabled a workaround to use mount instead for
the ltsp packages, but that appears to be unnecessary with recent klibc
nfsmount.

and, from my breif and initial tests, it seems the nfsmount in sid is
also working, so maybe switching scripts/nfs to use nfsmount, as long as
you're planning on keeping nfsmount around... (and making it a variable,
so easier to enable a workaround... there's a patch for this in my bzr
branch mentioned below)

maybe also/alternately getting NFS support for busybox mount is also an
option, if we can nudge the busybox maintainers? (#348664: busybox:
consider CONFIG_NFSMOUNT).

all that said, i must say, i'm partial to regular old mount :)

hoped to do it today but studies hold me up.
patches in aboves directions will be merged,

my initramfs-tools bzr branch:

http://llama.freegeek.org/~vagrant/bzr-archives/initramfs-tools/vagrant-initramfs-tools

currently should contain a patch to make the NFS mount command a
variable, and defaulting to nfsmount, as well as (incomplete but
useable) patches for #380649.

soon to be more :)

also you can help me if you publish your qemu args,
 which usually contains the bootargs.

the full qemu (0.8.1-1) commandline i use is this:

qemu -hda /dev/zero -m 80 -kernel /opt/ltsp/i386/boot/vmlinuz \
  -initrd /opt/ltsp/i386/boot/initrd.img \
  -append nfsroot=10.0.2.2:/opt/ltsp/i386 root=/dev/nfs ip=dhcp
console=ttyS0,38400 \
  -nographic

i've also tried without the console=ttyS0,38400 and -nographic parts.

/opt/ltsp/i386 is populated using ltsp-server from current development
branches.

so that i can better take care of nfsrootstuff.

thanks!

this is definitely holding up initramfs-tools to testing,
as there we use nfsmount from klibc solution, which works
 for some setups.

right... well, nfsmount seems to be working now, and making it
configurable will greatly simplify workarounds in the future(hopefully
not needed)...

live well,
  vagrant

something in a kernel update causes the patch to no longer apply, I
would want to have a reliable contact (hopefully 2 people) whom we can

Bug#381242: linux-source-2.6.17: Documentation for MTD_NAND in .config contains broken link

The provided link to get more information from,

I did some researching and I think they moved the link to
http://www.linux-mtd.infradead.org/archive/tech/nand.html.

To fix this bug, change http://www.linux-mtd.infradead.org/tech/nand.html to

TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS IS ACTUALLY WHAT YOU INTENDED, SINCE I'M ONLY ASSUMMING

Etch timeline is unrealistic because non-free firmware is NOT being dealt with

2006-08-02 Thread Nathanael Nerode
The kernel freeze must be delayed quite significantly for a fairly obvious
reason: the Debian kernel *still* has a lot of non-free and sourceless firmware
in
it. Unfortunately, little to no progress has been made on this.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this is pretty obvious from looking
at the
linux-source-2.6.17 package: they're not trying very hard.

Start with drivers/char/drm/mga_ucode.h. This is distributable, because it's
under
a BSD license, but it's not free software, because there's no source code.
Continue with drivers/chare/drm/radeon_cp.h. This is from ATI and has no
copyright notices from ATI or license from ATI, so it's likely undistributable.

And those are two of the more prominent ones. I could list dozens.

If people will not take the firmware issue seriously, either etch will not
release
on time, or etch will be *yet another* release where Debian *breaks* its Social
Contract.

My patches for firmware loading for tg3 have been *removed* from the Debian
kernel.
drivers/net/tg3.c *again* contains the proprietary firmware, compiled into the
kernel.
At least it has proper copyright and license notices, so it's distributable, but
it's *still non-free*. This is a positive disincentive to work on fixing these
issues:
my fully functional work was simply rejected in favor of breaking the Social
Contract.

What can be done about this? If there is no plan for progress, I intend to file
'serious' bugs against each kernel package for each piece of firmware, which
might
at least make *someone* pay *some* attention.
