Bug#413377: linux-image-2.6.18: on upgrade get grub priority even if not previously selected

2007-03-04 Thread Leonardo Boselli
Package: linux-image-2.6.18
Severity: normal

After upgrade from 2.6.18-3 to 2.6.18-4 grub select this new kernel for boot,
even if previously default was set to a non-linux partition.
I noticed the problem also on another installation.
It wopuld be nice that, if the default kernel is not the one that is
upgraded, it would remain as a default.
(so, if my default is the fifth on the list, adding a new one should keep
that one as the default, not the freshly installed one. the automatic update
of grub should occour only if the new one is an update for the one that is
 the current default)

Bug#413392: linux-image-2.6.18-4-686: system freeze for `trident' video driver + `pop art squares' screen saver

2007-03-04 Thread Teodor
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-4-686
Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-11
Severity: important

Hi all,

I have this problem on my old computer: Intel Celeron, 1100 MHz with a
Trident Microsystems CyberBlade/i1 video board. I've included this
information because the reported problem does not exist on other servers
used in production (more powerfull).

I'm using Gnome as a desktop environment. When I select the pop art
squares screensaver the system freeze after a few minutes. This was not
a problem with linux version 2.6.17, but only with 2.6.18* version.

The X session does not respond to any combination of keys,
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace included.

I don't have the knowledge of debugging kernel crashes. If you can tell
me how to do that I would be glad to offer more information so that this
bug gets corrected.

reportbug script for linux-image

2007-03-04 Thread Bastian Blank
Hi folks

There was some calls to add reportbug scripts to all the linux packages.

They should add the following informations to the bugreport if it is the
running kernel:
- lsmod
- dmesg

It should redirect any bugreport to the source package.

Do we need something else and what should we do with the latest
packages?

Bastian

Bug#407759: Should BLK_DEV_GENERIC be compiled into the kernel?

2007-03-04 Thread Toby Chamberlain
I am happy to confirm that this worked as described with the 4/3/2007 amd64
businesscard daily build - detected both the CD and the hard drive when
generic.all_generic_ide was set.

Many thanks for your time.
Toby

Could you please try again with the current version of the installer from
[1]? With the latest kernel, the generic module should now accept the
all_generic_ide parameter.

You will need to boot the installer with:
  install generic.all_generic_ide=1

TIA,
FJP

Comments/Problems:

The install did not find the CDROM drives. This is because of the new Intel
965 motherboards, which has drivers
that are not compatible with Debian. (Take a look at
http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/asmo-na/eng/products/linux/tech/319373.htm.
The same problem occurred when I tried to install the newest version of Debian
3.01r4 Sarge. I have tried to download
new drivers for the motherboard for Debian 3.01r4, but all the drivers
currently available from Intel is for audio, graphics, and
network for the board. From the newsgroups and forums, this problem seems to
be coming more and more prevalent as
Core 2 Duo processors are become more popular. The fix that I found at
comp.os.linux.setup was to use all-generic-ide or
linux acpi=off all-generic-ide. It seemed to work for other people, but it
did not work for my machine.

You will need to boot the installer with:

I am happy to confirm that this worked as described with the 4/3/2007

That is great to hear! Thanks you very much for confirming.
I think that means we can close this BR. Let's hope there will soon be
kernels that make this no longer needed.
