Bug#431285: linux-image-2.6.18-4-686: displays unnecessairy FUD during install

During installation, the package displays irrelevant and panicky

Detecting if Grub or LILO is the boot loader is easy to do and
should be done before this unnecessairy information screen is
 displayed.

Further more the installer could check by itself if the
needed changes is already included in the configuration file
instead of requiring a user to do so.

please paste aboves output plus:
cat /etc/kernel-img.conf
dpkg -l lilo grub
cat /etc/fstab

hmm not much info attached.

Booting with 'root=UUID=...' fails, it just hangs at Waiting for
root file system... and you can't boot your system anymore unless
you fall back to root=/dev/... syntax.

 It's a problem of initramfs-tools 0.88.
 It works fine with 0.87b.

please attach the output of the reportbug script,
you are not using MODULES=dep by chance?

another high probability error is vol_id,
i'll revert that change soon as i'm fed up of reports against it
and afair to your irc log you where using mdadm,
where it has trouble to recognize.

Because I don't have any more. ;) Booting with 0.87b works fine and
as soon as I run:

dpkg -i initramfs-tools_0.88_all.deb
update-initramfs -c -t -k $(uname -r)
reboot

the system fails to boot. When booting via grml live-cd, downgrading
to initramfs-tools_0.87b_all.deb, running update-initramfs and
rebooting again the system boots without any problems.

Does not work as the affected system can't boot at all with the
setup that does not work. ;)

So regarding /usr/share/bug/initramfs-tools/script:

* The difference in /proc/cmdline is just the root=UUID=... stuff,
no further magic (don't have the full line by hand now).
* Regarding /proc/filesystems: the kernel talks ext3 (the filesystem
  used on /).
* lsmod output should be irrelevant and I don't have it by hand
* cat /etc/kernel-img.conf -

# Kernel Image management overrides
# See kernel-img.conf(5) for details
do_symlinks = Yes

you are not using MODULES=dep by chance?

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Hi,

Since 2.6.21, sound on my Shuttle SN25P system (with ICE1724 sound device),
stopped working properly. I have to use 2.6.20 in order for it to work.
Any sound seems to gets played at a very low frequency.

At boot-time, I can see alsactl complaining but I could not find the logs.

Current pre-2.6.22 trees don't work either.

Thanks in advance.

Bug#431314: ALSA: snd_hda_intel: Intel HDA from SantaRosa platform not recognised

2007-07-01 Thread Didier Raboud
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.21-5
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Hi,

with newer versions of the Linux kernel, it is not possible to get any sound
from this card:

$ lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio
Controller (rev 02)

It is a Dell Latitude D630, running the brand new Santa Rosa platform from
Intel. Sound works under 2.6.18, but only with two sliders in alsamixer and
no sound from internal speakers (only headphones).

This is the error given by the kernel on boot time :

hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to polling mode...
hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode...
hda_codec: No auto-config is available, default to model=ref
hda-intel: no codecs initialized

And it does not work...

I'm running 2.6.22-rc6 too and this kernel does even not solve this issue. I'm
ready to give any necessary information.

Best regards,

Didier Raboud

xen 3.1.0 + patches for 2.6.18-4

Hello,
I#ve the problem that I need xen 3.1.0 but the binaries as welll as the
sources from xensource.com doesn't contain the patches required for booting
my machine 8for instacne IDE controller JMB363). The xen kernel in debian 4.0
(etch) will boot -the required patches are applied - but has only xen 3.0.3.

I'm asking if you have already xen 3.1.0 deb-packages or could you please so
kind to help me to patch xen-3.1.0 in order to get it booting on my machine.
kind regards,
Oliver

This could be caused by #427643, because all the necessary files to get the
UUID (and LABEL in my case) links are not copied into the initramfs.

we are waiting for Xen to land in 2.6.23 in upstream vanilla,

 otherwise Xen is doomed.
with recent hardware kvm can do process migration. :)

Hi,

then... Similar bugs already reported upstream:

0003207: ALC883 hda-intel no sound via the speakers, only sound comes from the
shared SPDIF/Headphone jack Aspire 9810 laptop. [0]

0003075: No soundoutput on my Speakers nor on Headphones. [1]

0003153: snd-hda-intel, 9205, Dell D830, no sound through speakers, only
headphones, tried latest CVS, no dice. [2]

I'll check if completion on these bugs is needed.

Maybe this is useful to the next guy installing Etch (or some other
  post-2.6.16 kernel) on a Blade 150 (or 100).

Can you confirm that with a 2.6.16 kernel the problem is not
 reproducible?

Yes, I can confirm that. linux-image-2.6.16-2-sparc64 worked well and
without the video=atyfb:off boot parameter.

Does the machine completely fail to boot if you don't pass
video=atyfb:off to the kernel? (ie: are you able to login somehow, for
 instance via ssh?).

Yes, it hangs very early in the boot process after the messages:
Remapping the kernel... done.
Booting Linux...

No harddisk activity after that, no ssh, no ping echo, no nothing.

Greetings,
 - Thomas
