firmware-ipw3945 and firmware-ipw2x00
Dear firmware-ipw3945 maintainers, I am writting message for ask why firmware-ipw2100 and firmware-ipw2200 weren't packaged? According to intel's FAQ[1], the firmware binaries can be redistribute without cost (free as in beer). There are restrictions against modification or redistribution of modified binaries, but can definitely redistribute the originals. And on Intel's download page[2] show other linux distros such as Arch Linux, Fedora, Gentoo and T2-SDE all has the fw/ucode packaged, but Debian only packaged the driver. So I think the firmware-ipw2x00 suitable in non-free, but I am not sure if any potential issue that we cannot package them? We tried applying the suggested patch from novell against the 2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch1 kernel source and continue to see the problem. Turning off vdso at boot or dynamically does work for us. The problem didn't appear when running the linux-image-2.6.21-2-k7 (2.6.21-6) kernel. Sam, what kernel did you apply the patch to that worked for you? Re: something recently got broken for 2.6.22
On Thursday 30 August 2007, Sven Luther wrote: On Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 09:44:37PM +0530, Ritesh Raj Sarraf wrote: So nobody had responded to my problem. Probably were busy or had never seen the issue. Notice that this kind of information is probably better handled through an actual bug report instead of a mailing list post. I had that habit to file a bug report when I found something odd. But lately I had to change my habit. I think talking to a developer about an issue before filing can help (some act to the email soon, some don't at all) Sometimes it also gives a feeling that for many problems, many packagers aren't very bothered. Probably are busy or it isn't on their priority list. I had had the kpartx issue (if the behavior seen here is exactly the same I got resolved for the other distrib) resolved sometime back. Either it hasn't been pushed or the packagers haven't pulled the latest changes. But still, will file a bug report and hope it is resolved. As a workaround, I removed the multipath-tools package and rebuilt my initrd images and everything worked back. This makes me believe that it must be the same issue. BTW, Debian's init in the initrd is very very minimal. I wonder if it can do root on multipath with what it currently has. This is something which sometimes makes me feel sad. We do only features which are available upstream. And sometimes it even makes me drop Debian as an option when I need to setup a box for a client. I have had bad experiences with using Debian for a client where the e1000 driver wasn't properly patched. And it wasn't because we only stick to what upstream commits. In a way it is good but that makes us far behind the competitors. Fedora and Ubuntu are good at including patches which are at times very important for a device's/feature's functionality. And if you bring such issues, you're expected to patch on your own and fix it. Well, I can do that but if I am ending up with doing patches and rebuilds, what's the point of using a distribution. I wonder if we do new technolgies within Debian too. Are there DDs working on things like root on multipath or similar new features in other areas? Or are people only bothered about syncing upstream and packaging ? And please. I'm not cribbing. I make an effort to do things that can be done to help improve the OS. Debian is a great volunteer effort and some people here are great to interact with. It is just that as a whole, you don't see a complete package. (Since i am banned from debian mailing lists, if you consider this mail legit, please consider bouncing it to the list). This is surprising and bad news. Debian already is lacking resources who can dedicate time to root cause and feature implementations and you say that you've been banned. Till now, looking at this page: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianKernel?highlight=%28DebianKernel%29 I had the assumption that you still were part of Debian Kernel Team. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: linux-kbuild-2.6.18 Version: 2.6.18-1 Severity: important I'm building proprietary Linux module with complicated directory structure. Particulary, ther is a directory with a library being built inside it (i.e. lib-y is non-empty, obj-y is empty). Linux kernel Makefile runs modpost regardless of emptyness of obj-y variable; so I see the following command being run: scripts/mod/modpost -m -i /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.18-3-amd64/Module.symvers -I /path_to_the_library_dir/Module.symvers -o /path_to_the_library_dir/Module.symvers I do not have any problems with it when I use self-compiled kernels (even when I compile them with kernel-package) or with RH kernels. However, when I use kernels from the Debian etch, such as linux-image-2.6.18-3-amd64 with linux-headers-2.6.18-3-amd64, the modpost command fails with error Can't open file. modpost command from linux-kbuild-2.6.18 tries to detect the type of the object and fails to do it when there are no object files passed to it. I propose to fix Debian modpost script to call any one of the available real modpost scripts. Another option may be to create an empty file using the file name specified in the -o option and exit (it is the behaviour of the real modpost). Bug#440229: initramfs-tools: multipath-tools installation makes kenrel unbootable
Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.90a Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable I found that post install of multipath-tools if an initrd image is updated, the kernel goes unbootable. On looking at the failure, it shows that the root device was held busy when in initrd's /init it tries to mount the device to /root The workaround was to remove multipath-tools and regenerate the initrd image. IIRC this bug was related to kpartx. I had seen this issue on my laptop and with the workaround have been able to avoid this bug. -- Package-specific info: -- /proc/cmdline root=UUID=5857aa08-5dc3-4b46-b286-76bb2e291468 ro selinux=0 -- /proc/filesystems ext3 fuseblk ext2 reiserfs vfat -- lsmod Module Size Used by nf_conntrack_ipv4 19596 1 xt_state4288 1 nf_conntrack 62280 2 nf_conntrack_ipv4,xt_state nfnetlink 7576 2 nf_conntrack_ipv4,nf_conntrack iptable_filter 4800 1 ip_tables 14212 1 iptable_filter x_tables 16196 2 xt_state,ip_tables michael_mic 4352 6 arc43840 6 ecb 5376 6 blkcipher 8068 1 ecb cryptomgr 5312 0 ieee80211_crypt_tkip12032 3 af_packet 24968 4 nls_iso8859_1 5952 1 nls_cp437 7616 1 vfat 13888 1 fat50460 1 vfat nls_base9024 4 nls_iso8859_1,nls_cp437,vfat,fat reiserfs 72 2 ext2 63816 1 usb_storage78528 5 appletalk 37344 2 ax25 53648 2 ipx29732 2 p8023 3904 1 ipx nvidia 7252212 26 binfmt_misc12936 1 cpufreq_ondemand9740 1 cpufreq_userspace 6464 0 cpufreq_powersave 3648 0 acpi_cpufreq 11080 1 freq_table 6464 2 cpufreq_ondemand,acpi_cpufreq rfcomm 39832 6 l2cap 26048 5 rfcomm capability 6728 0 commoncap 8832 1 capability ppdev 10500 0 parport_pc 35940 0 lp 12836 0 parport35848 3 ppdev,parport_pc,lp button 9808 0 ac 7044 0 battery11908 0 ipv6 265988 14 snd_atiixp_modem 17288 0 snd_via82xx_modem 16392 0 snd_intel8x0m 18508 0 snd_ac97_codec 94692 3 snd_atiixp_modem,snd_via82xx_modem,snd_intel8x0m ac97_bus4096 1 snd_ac97_codec slamr 375236 0 ungrab_winmodem 4224 0 fuse 43732 5 dm_snapshot18340 0 dm_mirror 22848 0 dm_mod 53952 2 dm_snapshot,dm_mirror kvm_intel 20556 0 kvm59120 1 kvm_intel sbp2 23944 0 loop 18756 0 snd_usb_audio 77056 1 snd_usb_lib17216 1 snd_usb_audio snd_seq_dummy 5572 0 snd_seq_oss31232 0 joydev 11392 0 snd_seq_midi 10112 0 snd_seq_midi_event 8704 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi snd_hda_intel 241112 2 snd_seq48176 6 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_midi_event snd_pcm_oss41216 0 snd_mixer_oss 17280 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_pcm74116 7 snd_atiixp_modem,snd_via82xx_modem,snd_intel8x0m,snd_ac97_codec,snd_usb_audio,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm_oss ipw3945 195108 1 snd_timer 22916 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm snd_rawmidi24640 2 snd_usb_lib,snd_seq_midi snd_seq_device 9548 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi ieee80211 33416 1 ipw3945 snd_hwdep 10628 1 snd_usb_audio iTCO_wdt 12452 0 iTCO_vendor_support 5636 1 iTCO_wdt pcspkr 4928 0 hci_usb18076 6 usbhid 28640 0 i2c_i801 10512 0 psmouse38416 0 sdhci 18508 0 rtc14680 0 ieee80211_crypt 7616 2 ieee80211_crypt_tkip,ieee80211 bluetooth 53092 15 rfcomm,l2cap,hci_usb uvcvideo 33544 0 hid27072 1 usbhid i2c_core 25408 2 nvidia,i2c_i801 snd50948 21 snd_atiixp_modem,snd_via82xx_modem,snd_intel8x0m,snd_ac97_codec,snd_usb_audio,snd_seq_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_seq,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_hwdep serio_raw 8516 0 snd_page_alloc 11464 5 snd_atiixp_modem,snd_via82xx_modem,snd_intel8x0m,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm soundcore 9376 1 snd mmc_core 28036 1 sdhci rng_core6724 0
