Bug#303918: acknowledged by developer (closing 303918)

2007-09-18 Thread Steve M. Robbins

 This is an automatic notification regarding your Bug report
 #303918: Patch to support IT8212 on-board RAID controller,
 which was filed against the kernel package.

 It has been marked as closed by one of the developers, namely
 maximilian attems [EMAIL PROTECTED].

 You should be hearing from them with a substantive response shortly,
 in case you haven't already. If not, please contact them directly.

So the note in the bug report says presumably fixed. Did you
find something in the kernel package to make you presume this?

Thanks,

Bug#442508: coreutils: dd demolishes my computer

2007-09-18 Thread Toni Mueller

Hi Mike,

On Mon, 17.09.2007 at 20:04:24 -0400, Michael Stone [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 there's nothing especially unique in dd that would demolish a computer.

there's still the difference in behaviour between dd and cp, the latter
causing no such problems. With demolish I wanted to say that it
really breaks the regular system's operation, and that it required me
to reboot the machine, which is a shame, imho.

Since we don't even know for sure what command line you used that caused
you a problem, I can't really help with that. I can tell you that I use
dd all the time and don't have issues anything like you described.

Bug#133574: Benefits of Hoooodia

2007-09-18 Thread Chang Owens
The hdia plant in the Kalahari Desert could become the newest
weapon in the war against obesity. According to C.B.S.

Hdia Gorrdoonnii Diet Pills is the Fastest, Most Effective weightreduction
Supplement Available for fast results

1.Hdia gordonii is herbul -- it is not a drug.
2.Hdia has appetite suppressant abilities.
3.Hdia tricks the brain into thinking you've eaten.
4.Hdia gordonii is not a stimulant.
5.Safe for most people.
6.NO side effects.

Key results of Hdia reported include a reduced interest in food,
delay in the time after eating before hunger sets in again, feeling
full more quickly, and a general feeling of well-being.

 Could you try it and see if the ordering is correct with the newer

 It seems that the unstable 2.6.22-1-486_2.6.22-3 solved this issue,
 as you can see from the logs attached.

Closing the bug: since no one replied to my previous mail, I assume
it's all OK.

I have been using sshfs over fuse for quite some time without
problems. Noticed a high load this morning, and found the oops below.
Known fixed issue upstream: http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/1/29/210 ??

I'm not sure of what triggered this oops. At the time of the fault,
the system was pretty idle, and I don't think my net connection or the
ssh connection went down at the time.

 Hi,

 During the last few months it became clear that I'll no longer have
 lots of free time to devote to Debian, as I used to. As I did not
 significantly contribute to either kernel or sparc port maintenance in
 a while now, I would like to formalize this fact by resigning as a
 kernel team member and sparc port maintainer.

 I would like to thank everybody I had a pleasure to work with on these
 subprojects. It was fun and I mostly had a great time, but the life is
 changing and it's time to move on.

 Please note that I'm NOT resigning as a Debian developer. I'll
 continue to maintain my packages and will be glad to help out with
 sparc stuff, whenever I can.

 I believe it would be useful for me to keep svn access to the
 debian-kernel repository, but I'll leave it to kernel project
 admins to make a final decision.

 Best regards,

Thanks for all of your work Jurij. I've enjoyed working with you and
you're welcome back anytime. Speaking only as 1 admin, I see no reason
to remove your access if you believe having it maybe useful.

Package: linux-image-2.6.18-3-686
Version: 2.6.18-7
Severity: normal

It seems that the kernel has some races in opening/closing of serial
ports. Simple C program below just opens/closes a port in a loop.
When I run the program, I begin to get the following in dmesg even
though the port is not connected (idle):

irq 4: nobody cared (try booting with the irqpoll option)
 [c014037f] __report_bad_irq+0x2b/0x69
 [c014056c] note_interrupt+0x1af/0x1e7
 [c013fb83] handle_IRQ_event+0x23/0x49
 [c013fc5c] __do_IRQ+0xb3/0xe8
 [c01050e5] do_IRQ+0x43/0x52
 [c01036b6] common_interrupt+0x1a/0x20
 [c0101b91] mwait_idle+0x25/0x38
 [c0101b52] cpu_idle+0x9f/0xb9
 [c03186fd] start_kernel+0x379/0x380
handlers:
[c020e07b] (serial8250_interrupt+0x0/0xdd)
Disabling IRQ #4

In addition, when two copies of this program are run simultaneously on
my hyper-thread Pentium 4 box, each of copies start to randomly fail to
open the port with errno=5 (Input/output error).

Note that I've tested this both with standard PC port ttyS0 and with
serial ports of MOXA multi-port serial board (ttyM*), and [mis]behavior
is the same. Also note that opening /dev/null instead of serial port
doesn't have the problem.

Here is the C program:

#include stdio.h
#include unistd.h
#include errno.h
#include fcntl.h

int main()
{
  while(1) {
int fd = open(/dev/ttyS0, O_RDONLY | O_NOCTTY);
if(fd  0)
  fprintf(stderr, %s\n, strerror(errno));
else
  close(fd);
  }
}

# Linux kernel version: 2.6.21v3

if you are using PATA you'd need to use at least 2.6.22,
better use 2.6.23-rc5 you can find appropriate sources
on buildserver. use deb-src deblines:
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianKernel

please report back on newer kernel.

K3b does not cause kernel panic on 2.6.22. I had not upgraded due to
problems compiling the nvidia driver which now seems fixed. Apologies
for wasting your time. Bug report closed :)

I still find it strange that k3b was the only application to cause the
kernel panic. The 2.6.21 driver worked flawlessly with all other apps I
have installed including k9copy.

Thanks again.

Bug#440720: needs to be fixed for Lenny

2007-09-18 Thread Bernd Zeimetz
severity 440720 grave
thanks

After more and more people ask about installing Debian on an Ultrasparc
III machine I'm rising the severity of this bug to make sure this is
fixed for Lenny. It would be good to have a feedback from teh kernel
team if it is possible to boot a non-SMP kernel on UltraSparc III (and
more recent) US cpus at all.

Bug#406902: kernel NFS data loss

2007-09-18 Thread Paul Szabo
On 24 Jul 07 I wrote:

 The patch below (against 2.6.8-16sarge7) seems to solve the problem.
 ... [patch for fs/exportfs/expfs.c] ...

Seems to me that this has been incorporated (or done) in
linux-source-2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch2 .

Earlier, on 20 Jul 07 I wrote:

 ... I noticed what I thought were oddities. ... Do you think the
 following patch against 2.6.8-16sarge7 code would be useful?
 ... [patch for fs/nfs/dir.c] ...

That does not seem to have been added to
linux-source-2.6.18.dfsg.1-13etch2 . I am still not quite sure what
needs lock_kernel(), and anyway my patch did not actually solve
anything, so that might be OK.

Cheers,

 This is not that bad with the libc6 from testing, but this is definitely
 NOT fixed.

BTW, lebrun.d.o, also an USIII, running 2.6.23-rc6 plus the aforementioned
patch still created unkillable dpkg-query processes.

Thanks for the hint, saves me the work to give it a try. Building seems
to work on US II CPUs, though, and aptitude doesn't crash as described
below:

Outside of the chroot:

- login as user != root (we're using nss-db here didn't check if that
makes a difference, but I guess you have a similar setup on lebrun)
- use su or sudo to become root
- run aptitude -u (for example...)

 frozen.
Running the same under strace requieres you to kill -9 the aptitude
processes, but it doesn't freeze the machine.

The machine doesn't freeze with a libc6 from lenny.

A patch to aufs has been sent to the bug list for #441307.

Once this patch is applied the aufs module will build for the
vserver-x86 arch/flavour.

Kapil.
