Recent firmware changes needs review
Hi The recent changes for firmware removal needs a review. Criterias: - Anything gone. - An allmodconfig build using the orig sources should not fail because of this changes. Quick tutorial for genorig.py: - It gets the version it should build an orig for from the changelog or from the -V parameter. - It takes one or two parameter. The first is an _upstream_ tarball (e.g. linux-2.6.22.tar.bz2). The second is an optional _upstream_ patch (e.g. patch-2.6.23-rc8.bz2). - It needs to be called from the root of the linux-2.6 checkout. - The output is written into ../orig, not ... BTW, lebrun.d.o, also an USIII, running 2.6.23-rc6 plus the aforementioned patch still created unkillable dpkg-query processes. BTW, I got around to changing the input/output-device on lebrun today, so I'll be able to get register dumps in case it goes dead. I'm not sure if those problems are related :) The register dumps would be needed if the kernel fails to initialize the CPU Fabio told me that break+p output might be useful in this case too, I'm just repeating :) In any case, I let it run some more, and then when it went more or less dead, I tried to press the said key combination on the keyboard - to no avail. Break+p would be Ctrl+Pause+p? Didn't work, and Alt+Pause+p also didn't work. Bug#444271: Slow hard drive performance on IOP32x (ARM)
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12 Severity: important Several users of Debian on Thecus N2100 have reported (see [1] and [2]) that their hard drive performance goes down significantly after moving from the original firmware to Debian. It goes from something like: | Timing cached reads: 424 MB in 2.00 seconds = 212.00 MB/sec | Timing buffered disk reads: 158 MB in 3.01 seconds = 52.49 MB/sec down to: | Timing cached reads: 60 MB in 2.00 seconds = 29.95 MB/sec | Timing buffered disk reads: 60 MB in 3.07 seconds = 19.53 MB/sec This also happens with 2.6.23. I found that Intel has some patches for the DMA engine that are required to get the original speed. I'm not sure, but I think recent versions of the 57xx chips even come with TSO firmware embedded in the device. Manoj, unless your chipset is an ancient 5701 rev a0, it will work fine without kernel-supplied firmware. So time to get Managemet draft a letter to Customers and explain 'em that all there systems get switched to Ubuntu cause of a driver debian doesn't feel is free enough. Back in the days I helped run a several hundred machine shop (well, university CS labs), we had out own software deployment system -- and used to do our own kernel compiles. My take is that large shops have people competent enough to add in self compiled kernels, and image them through the server farm, or set up their own local apt repo. It is the people in the middle who might not be able to deal with it. manoj -- Say twenty-three-skiddoo to logout.
