Bug#486322: gdb: Failed to read a valid object file image from memory

2008-06-15 Thread mat974
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-6-686
Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-18etch6
Severity: important

It is somewhat a pity that bug #401482 still exists in 2.6.18.dfsg.1-18etch6 --
18 months after the problem has been reported first. I'm using a 32-bit kernel
on a 64-bit AMD Sempron.

How many years will it take until 2.6.23 is included in the stable distribution?

It is not even possible to debug simple programs like hello-world.c without
getting the error message Failed to read a valid object file image from
memory.

Bug#486394: linux-modules-extra-2.6: Please add speakup modules

2008-06-15 Thread Samuel Thibault
Package: linux-modules-extra-2.6
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hello,

As discussed on the linux-boot and linux-kernel mailing lists,
for accessibility purpose it would be useful to have speakup
modules compiled for the debian installer, and thus to add them to
linux-modules-extra-2.6. Here is a patch that does so.

Cheers,
Samuel

Bug#410807: Patch for kernel BUG at drivers/xen/core/evtchn.c:481

2008-06-15 Thread Ian Campbell
Hi,

I believe this issue is fixed by
http://xenbits.xensource.com/xen-unstable.hg?rev/914304b3a3da

Without the patch (2.6.18.dfsg.1-18etch1) I was able to reproduce the
problem by repeatedly starting 4 guest domains in parallel[0] in a
around 5-6 hours or 288 iterations (first time I repro'd it was a couple
of hours, I wasn't counting time or iterations that time).

With the patch applied on top of the svn kernel
(2.6.18.dfsg.1-21.0.hellion0) the test survived overnight, around 16
hours and 850 iterations.

I've attached a version of this backported to the Etch kernel (some of
the function names differ). I also attached the svn diff-of-a-diff
against revision in r11588, 2.6.18.dfsg.1-22.

This issue is already fixed in the Lenny/Sid kernels which use the
paravirt_ops kernel port which has completely reimplemented event
channel code.

Cheers,
Ian.

Hi,

My on-motherboard Ethernet adapter,

01:05.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8001 Gigabit
Ethernet Controller (rev 13)

is fully functional using the sk98lin driver but only partially
functional using skge: it appears that the latter is unable to put the
card in promiscuous mode.

Symptoms where observed when bridging: using the skge driver, the
bridge does not see any incoming packets on the interface handled by
skge except when the destination MAC is broadcast or the card's
address itself (this makes the bridge hopelessly unusable, of course).
Using sk98lin, the bridge behaves normally (so it's not a config
problem or anything).

What is the reason for removing sk98lin, anyway? Maybe skge is better
for some people, but isn't it safer to compile both? (Surely there
must be a more intelligent way of closing bug #404196, so that both
drivers are available when configuring modules manually but only skge
will be used automatically! Just deleting sk98lin from the config
seems a bit overkill, doesn't it?)

Happy hacking,

Package: linux-image-2.6.24-1-amd64
Version: 2.6.24-2
Severity: normal

In 2.6.24, the budget-ci module can't load the driver for my TDA10045H
front-end, saying that tda10045_attach is missing.

During loading of my DVB card driver, budget-ci, I get:

Feb 3 01:25:08 noddy kernel: DVB: Unable to find symbol tda10045_attach()
Feb 3 01:25:08 noddy kernel: budget-ci: A frontend driver was not found for
device 1131/7146 subsystem 13c2/1011

This also happened in 2.6.22-3, although 2.6.22-2 was fine.

Re: initramfs-tools: how to to avoid nuking tmpfs?

 Hi,

 http://iki.fi/lindi/darcs/vtgrab-initramfs/

is a kludge that starts rvcd :6100 in the beginning of
initramfs. rcvd allows me to control virtual consoles over network
so that I can e.g. fix a system that has stopped at fsck using

 twiglet -c target.somewhere.org:6100

(rcvd and twiglet are part of normal debian vtgrab package.)

never heard of but ok why not..

The ugliest part is that init-bottom/vtgrab currently does

 echo 'exec chroot ${rootmnt} ${init} $@ ${rootmnt}/dev/console
 ${rootmnt}/dev/console' /conf/param.conf

indeed very ugly.

so that run-init is never run and tmpfs is not nuked. Can you think
of a cleaner way to have programs started from initramfs persist?

no there shouldn't be. look at udev. it restarts early after.
as initscript, shouldn't give harm as either the rootmnt works
and the initramfs console is uninteresting or you are there..

I tried looking at /usr/share/doc/initramfs-tools/copyright for
upstream mailing list, do they have one? If they do, I could forward
 my question there.

cc'ed above :)

best regards

Bug#486433: please bring back prism54

2008-06-15 Thread Jon DeVree
Package: linux-image-2.6.25-2-686
Version: 2.6.25-5
Severity: important

I know the prism54 driver is old, doesn't support WPA, and has plenty of
other problems. But the p54pci driver is not a complete replacement for it.
The softmac firmware you have to use (even with old fullmac cards) doesn't
allow you to do master mode.

Please do not disable it unless it doesn't work at all anymore.

It's an ingenious solution to a problem that
should never have existed in the first place.
