 be removed or something?

Already done for plain images.

For k-p not fixable from this point.

Bug#498828: rt61pci needs one more millisecond to initialize

2008-09-13 Thread M. Vefa Bicakci
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686
Version: 2.6.26-5
Severity: important
Tags: patch

Hello,

It is known that the rt61pci module needs one more millisecond to
initialize after the wireless card's firmware has been uploaded.
This problem was fixed with the following commit in 2.6.27-rcX
series:

=== 8 ===
commit e6d3e902088ac5da77b074f513e3cb80422ff471
Author: Ivo van Doorn [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Sun Jul 27 15:06:50 2008 +0200

rt2x00: rt61pci needs another millisecond after firmware upload
=== 8 ===

If this patch is not applied, then rt61pci becomes unresponsive after
one brings the interface down and up.

The appended patch fixes this issue. It applies (with an offset)
to Debian's kernel sources (2.6.26-5).

Regards,

commit e6d3e902088ac5da77b074f513e3cb80422ff471
Author: Ivo van Doorn [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Sun Jul 27 15:06:50 2008 +0200

rt2x00: rt61pci needs another millisecond after firmware upload

After the hardware has indicated the firmware upload has completed
and the device is ready, we should wait another millisecond to
make sure the device is really ready to continue.

Without this timout, bringing the interface down and up again will
fail due to incorrect register initialization.

Hello,

After installing this new kernel image, hwclock could not work now.
For example, hwclock --systohc will report
select() to /dev/rtc to wait for clock tick timed out
As a result, /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh will fail and the system clock
may be incorrect. But, if --directisa is used, the problem is gone.
Is this a duplicated or related bug with #277298?

Thanks.

During boot on my Etch machine (Dell PowerEdge 830 with an Intel Pentium D CPU
2.80GHz, kernel 2.6.16-2-686-smp), there is a message about select() timing out
on /dev/rtc. That message displays twice, a few more messages, then there is a
message about trying to set the system clock again. I've looked through the
syslog and dmesg, and these messages are not in there. Or else I'd post the
exact messages. :)

Ah, a google search found the exact message for me:
select to /dev/rtc to wait for clock tick timed out

But no solution.

That leads to this: When I start up VMWare server, I start getting these
messages in the syslog:

Since VMWare is the only app at the moment that uses the RTC, during its
execution is the only time I get those error messages.

Someone on the VMWare Forum suggested adding 'nohpet' to the kernel boot
parameters, but that did not fix anything.

In another bug report (#283524) Laurent Bonnaud suggested trying the genrtc
module, but putting that in modules conf in place of rtc did not seem to fix
anything.

I also tried acpi=no on the kernel boot command line.

So far, nothing has helped.

Package: util-linux
Version: 2.12r-12
Severity: grave
File: /sbin/hwclock
Justification: renders package unusable

Using manual command:
hwclock --show
waits a few seconds and fails with the message:
select() to /dev/rtc to wait for clock tick timed out
and so is the --hctosys command.

Etch kernel here is linux-image-2.6.17-2-686 version 2.6.17-9.
Booting the same hardware to sarge + 2.6.17 or 2.6.18 is fine and its
hwclock works as expected (so not a hardware bug).

I found this after tracking why I had a 1 hour time shift at boot. I
normally use Europe/Paris for my local time, but I had to work around this
bug by setting the system timezone to GMT (I hope this is temporary).

Playing manually with hwclock I also discovered --directisa, which when
added makes it work but I guess this is for debug only and should not be
used in production.

Happens every time. Notice that the clock tick seems (?) to arrive
just after it gives up. This only happens if I'm using 2.6.24.

Here's how it looks in strace:

open(/dev/rtc, O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 3
ioctl(3, RTC_UIE_ON, 0) = 0
select(4, [3], NULL, NULL, {5, 0}) = 0 (Timeout)

close(3)= 0
write(1, ...got clock tick\n, 18...got clock tick

exit_group(1)

Hardware is a Fujitsu p7120 lifebook.

When resuming vom ACPI S3 (I use s2ram to make the machine fall

which is repeated until I turn off the machine. Further logins or
running programs is impossible, so I have to turn the machine off/
reboot it.
The hard drive of this computer uses a Hidden Protected Area - this
feature seems to be connected with the error message above (at least
ThinkWiki says so, cf. http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/
Problems_with_ACPI_suspend-to-ram, last entry there).
The problem went away with linux-image-2.6.22-3-686, but
unfortunately it reappeared when I upgraded to linux-image-2.6.24-1-686.

Subject: linux-image-2.6.22-1-sparc64: sbus drivers not autoloaded, boot fails
Package: linux-image-2.6.22-1-sparc64
Version: 2.6.22-2
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line ***
I upgraded linux-image-2.6.21-1-sparc64 to 2.6.22-1-sparc64 on my SBus-only
Sun Ultra 1. It appears that sbus driver autoloading is not working (may be a
problem with discover, udev or something other like that). However, due to this
problem, the drivers on initramfs are not autoloaded either and so sun_esp is
not
loaded and my root disk does not become visible and boot fails.

Rerunning mkinitramfs -k shows that the module files are present on initramfs
and
just the loading is broken.

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Hi folks,

I've just installed a new Lenny system from a recent Lenny netinst
CD. I've had an issue with random system freezes that doesn't appear
to respond to a remote login or even alt-SysRq. However, this only
seemed to happen in multiuser mode --- I've had no problem at all with
a single user login. The logs don't seem to tell me much, although
there seems to be a lot of things regarding acpi and the cpu scaling
in the second or two before the point where the freeze presumably
happens. Typical output looks something like:

Jan 7 20:53:00 mercury kernel: input: Power Button (FF) as /class/input/input3
Jan 7 20:53:00 mercury kernel: ACPI: Power Button (FF) [PWRF]
Jan 7 20:53:00 mercury kernel: input: Power Button (CM) as /class/input/input4
Jan 7 20:53:00 mercury kernel: ACPI: Power Button (CM) [PWRB]
Jan 7 20:53:00 mercury kernel: input: Sleep Button (CM) as /class/input/input5
Jan 7 20:53:00 mercury kernel: ACPI: Sleep Button (CM) [SLPB]
Jan 7 20:53:01 mercury kernel: Marking TSC unstable due to: cpufreq changes.
Jan 7 20:53:01 mercury kernel: Time: acpi_pm clocksource has been installed.
Jan 7 20:53:01 mercury kernel: lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven).
Jan 7 20:53:01 mercury kernel: Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -145741813 ns)

There is often something to do with the avahi system as well in there,
but that appears to be quite common in the log. Lines similar to these
always seem to appear in the second or two before the end of the log
for that session.

To investigate the issue I booted to runlevel three several times. I
initially set the runlevel to be identical to runlevel one and
gradually introduced new services for each new boot. I tried several
combinations of the acpi, cpufrequtils and avahi scripts, and tried to
coax the machine to freeze. It did a few times, and the only common
element seems to be the presence of cpufrequtils in the start up. The
load on the machine doesn't appear to be a factor.

Of course, this sort of testing does take a long time, and it's quite
possible I've missed something. The freezes appear to be completely
random, so it's also possible I haven't waited long enough for a
freeze to manifest in some of my successful tests.

If you have anything you want me to try, please let me know.

the system halts during boot, most often during attempt to detect
unexistent /dev/hdb.
in the rare cases the boot process passes this hop, it finally hangs
when hald is been actived.
this happens only with the 2.6.17 kernel, in the 686 flavour. 486 works ok.

The fix for wishlist item #389918 breaks the functionality of the traffic
shaping of shorewall and other firewalls.
The option CONFIG_NET_CLS_ACT is set to yes, but the suboptions are not.
So no modules are built at all and all act_* kernel modules alre missing.

Bug#469901: marked as done (linux-image-2.6-486: Upgrading from sarge leaves you behind with an old, unsupported and probably soon unsecure kernel)

Package: linux-image-2.6-486
Severity: important

I'm not sure if this is the right package to file the report against.
But as this package probably should have been installed during the
upgrade I chose it. Be free to reassign the report.

This system had installed an up-to-date version of sarge with
standard kernel packages (kernel-image-2.4-k6 version 101sarge2,
kernel-image-2.4.27-4-k6 version 2.4.27-10sarge7). I upgraded it
to etch (aptitude update; aptitude dist-upgrade). The upgrade did
not touch the kernel nor did it warn me that I have to upgrade the
kernel myself.

So after the upgrade I end up with a system which has an (in etch)
unsupported and unmaintained kernel which never will be updated by
security updates and thus will be unsecure very soon. A standard
Debian user probably will not realize this fact and will feel secure
with his upgraded system.

If you upgrade from sarge to etch also the kernel should be upgraded
to a maintained version or at least there should be a clear warning
that you have to upgrade the kernel yourself.

Regards

Uwe

This is for the package version from backports.org, so it might be a problem
with the backport.

I get a kernel crash reported in pageattr.c when I load ATI's proprietary
display driver (fglrx). It seems to come in two variations. I'm not sure if
it is an ATI problem or a Linux problem. I have also filed a support request
with ATI (ticket #737-1031255).

As per etch release notes: Default encoding for etch is UTF-8. Section
2.2 on release notes:
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/release-notes/ch-whats-new.en.html#s-system-changes

This is not true for GNU/Linux kernel where you can find that
CONFIG_NLS_DEFAULT is set to iso8859-1. This prevents uaing utf-8 charset
for mounted filesystems for example samba (smbfs), and maybe others.

Etch has already being released with this, but IMHO this should be fixed
from now on.

Thanks.

Hello,

I did wonder why the k7 flavor of the 2.6.23 linux-image does not show
up in debian/sid for a while now. As I did find out the k7 flavor has
been dropped. Is this correct? The question now is which linux image
should one install instead? The 486 or the 686 flavor?

To make this clear the meta package linux-image-2.6-k7 should IMHO
depend on the preferred current linux image.

Thanks,
Gert

Hi,

Linux image 2.6.23 has been in sid for some time now.
In fact, the current version of alsa (1.0.15-3) seems
to depend on the next version of the kernel for correct
operation; with kernel 2.6.22, not only did sound fail,
whenever flash tried to emit sound it hung my iceweasel
(well, I guess that's the quality you get with non-free...)

Anyway, 2.6.22 is no longer good. Long live 2.6.23.

Thanks for the good work,
and have fun,
Shai.

Hi folks,

I've been tracking down a build failure in the current lenny
multi-arch i386/amd64/powerpc/source DVD. What I've found is an oddity
in the Sources.gz file: the stanza for the source package
linux-modules-extra-2.6 does not list the powerpc packages generated
it in the Binary: field. This seems to be the case for both lenny and
sid. Is that a bug in the package, or somewhere else (e.g. dak)?

Package: hotplug
Version: 0.0.20040311-8

With the packaged 2.6.4 kernels on ia64, the presence of a firewire card in
the system with nothing attached to it is enough to cause the driver stack
including ip1394 to be loaded by hotplug... *before* e1000 gets loaded. This
causes eth0 to be assigned to the firewire channel instead of the system
primary NIC, with predictable results.

My short-term hack was to add e1000 to /etc/mkinitrd/modules and regenerate
the initrd, which causes the e1000 driver to load very early and win the race
to claim eth0... I've also been told about nameif which is an interesting way
to work around changing eth* names.

However, I really don't understand why the whole firewire module stack is being
loaded when there is nothing attached to the interface card at all? Can we
have that not happen by default?

Package: kernel-image-2.6-686-smp
Version: 2.6.18+6

I have dual Opteron server based on TYAN S2882-D Thunder K8SD Pro
mainboard. Disks are IDE, SATA, SATA, SCSI RAID 5 on Adaptec 2130S PCI-X
controller.

When booting standard kernel, I cannot have SATA and SCSI disks mounted
automatically from fstab. Seems, that in the middle of booting process,
the SCSI disks simply switch their positions.

First the SATA takes sda+sdb and SCSI takes sdc until the time of fsck.
Then, upon mounting, SATA takes sdb+sdc and SCSI moves to sda.

As the disks have different partitioning, I get either fsck errors or
mount errors, whatever I set the fstab.

The only way is to disable automatic mounting and perform the mound
manually after the whole bootup process.

If I use custom compiled all-in-one kernel (without modules), everything
keeps stable: SCSI takes sda, SATA takes sdb+sdc, definitely.

I attach kernel log files from Debian (2.6.18) and from custom
(2.6.19.2) kernel.

*** Please type your report below this line ***

I'm using a HP Compaq desktop computer which has an embedded Gigabit Ethernet
PCI in the motherboard. It works without problem up to kernel version 2.6.14,
but upgrading to higher versions make it stop working. When trying to dhclient
from 2.6.15 or 2.6.16 I get some PCI Bus Error messages and cannot connect to
DHCP Client, while the same version of the whole system with a lower version
(I've tried 2.6.8, 2.6.12 and 2.6.14 work perfectly).

lspci -v shows:

:40:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5751
Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 01)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company: Unknown device 3006
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 169

Capabilities: [50] Vital Product Data
Capabilities: [58] Message Signalled Interrupts: 64bit+ Queue=0/3
Enable-
Capabilities: [d0] #10 [0001]

Please ask for whatever information you could need. I can also test things if
you don't have hardware available for testing and you need it.

Greetings,
Miry

Please reassign to correct package.
All I know is upon shutdown -h, the screen, just before the Power down
message, is left with lots of
  1-1.1:1.0 cannot disable/reset/enable port 1(error=-108)
or something messages.

If we, before shutdown -h, first umout our card reader and unplug it
from the USB socket, we won't get the aforementioned messages on the
lingering on the final power down screen, but see instead via dmesg
various:
sdc : sense not available.
sdc : status=0, message=00, host=1, driver=00
sdc : READ CAPACITY failed.
Buffer I/O error on device sdd, logical block 0
sdc: Mode Sense: 00 00 00 00
sdd:3 0:0:0:3: rejecting I/O to dead device
unable to read partition table
sdc: Write Protect is off
sdc: assuming drive cache: write through

Anyway, it is not every user who's monitor stays on after one's
motherboard's power is off, so I might have seen messages others
don't.
