Bug#520494: virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-1-686: userland vs. kernel module versions again

2009-03-20 Thread Shai Berger
Package: virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.26-1-686
Version: 2.6.26+1.6.6-dfsg-6
Severity: important

Hi,

This sounds a lot like a return of bug #502346,
but I opened a new one because the details of the
problem are different.

The effect is similar -- one needs to build the
virtualbox modules from source in order to use
the package, with m-a a-i virtualbox-ose; but
unlike in previous versions, the program no longer
suggests it, and a user needs to search the web
or some such to find this solution. Thus, the
'important' severity; while the bug doesn't
render the package completely unusable, it does
make it hard to use.

One more problem to consider is the version
numbering -- as you can see, the current version
of the compiled module offered in sid (and Lenny)
is 2.6.26+1.6.6-dfsg-6 (based on the kernel
version). The version m-a built for me is
2.1.4-dfsg-1+2.6.26-13 (based on VirtualBox
version), which is lower. I can see the problems
coming already.

Thanks,
Shai.

Bug#518412: linux-2.6 install errors due to incompatible depmod files [was Re: Bug#518412: initramfs-tools: must support relative paths in modules.dep ]

2009-03-20 Thread Michal Marek
Frans Pop napsal(a):
The use case here, which I suspect is not all that uncommon, is that I
built a kernel from upstream source on a (Debian unstable) system with
the new version of depmod and then installed that kernel on a (Debian
stable) system that has an older version of modprobe [1].

Backward vs. forward compatibility discussion aside, there is a reason
why most (all?) distro kernel packages run depmod at *install time* on
the target machine. There might be modules installed by other packages,
the format might change, newer depmod has a configuration file and
finally the files are not exactly small and can be recreated rather
easily. It might be a good idea to do the same when compiling kernels
manually and copying them around.

Doesn't Debian run depmod in the postinst of the kernel package - and
iirc, again on boot anyway?

In which case, you'd always have module files that match the version of
depmod in the host environment not the build environment.

Me neither.

The only file in /lib/modules/2.x.y-z (other than the modules) we
include in the kernel packages is modules.order.

The rest of the modules.* come by running depmod when the package is
installed; we also update it when any further packages containing
modules for that kernel are installed.

Bug#516734: linux-headers-2.6.26-1-686: For those of you who can live with 2.6.26..

2009-03-20 Thread Heiko N. Weinen
Package: linux-headers-2.6.26-1-686
Version: 2.6.26-13
Followup-For: Bug #516734

Hi!

For those of you who can still live with an older (2.6.26-1) kernel:
There are packages available with the missing header information.
Somebody just bumped them out of unstable but they can be installed
manually through downloading and dpkg -i'ing them:

First of all check out which package you need and download it:
http://packages.debian.org/search?suite=allsection=allarch=anysearchon=nameskeywords=2.6.26-1+headers+linux

Must match your kernel, naturally.

Grab a copy of the common headers, too:
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/linux-headers-2.6.26-1-common

Then install the dependencies listed for both normally, if you
don't have them already.

Now install both manually downloaded packages using sudo dpkg -i...

We should include this in stable updates. No ABI changes were detected
in a test build of the 686 flavor.

commit 68df3755e383e6fecf2354a67b08f92f18536594
Author: Linus Torvalds torva...@linux-foundation.org
Date: Thu Mar 19 11:10:17 2009 -0700

Add '-fwrapv' to gcc CFLAGS

This makes sure that gcc doesn't try to optimize away wrapping
arithmetic, which the kernel occasionally uses for overflow testing, ie
things like

if (ptr + offset  ptr)

which technically is undefined for non-unsigned types. See

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12597

for details.

Not all versions of gcc support it, so we need to make it conditional
(it looks like it was introduced in gcc-3.4).

Thanks Kir. I've filed a report to track this issue. (In general, we
try to have a bug report for each issue we fix in a stable update).

Can you elaborate on the impact of this bug? Does it break all virtual
servers that require udev, Gentoo being an example? I take it that
Debian virtual servers aren't affected (or we'd hear a lot more
screaming) - is that because they are typically configuerd to run
without udev?

 Ftp masters,
Any idea what's going on here? This is from auto-propagation from
security-master to ftp-master. I manually verified that the
md5sum/size of the orig.tar.gz matches in the pools on klecker ries.

Yeah, sorry about that. I just found a bug in dak to do with string vs
integer types which was causing this. I've manually re-injected the
packages the release team have made me aware of (including this kernel
upload).

Sorry for the problem,

team, considering yaird broken to not fully mimic initramfs-tools.

The kernel team has not responded to my latest questions targeted both
bug#518315 and the kernel team mailinglist. Might be because I am silly
to even ask.

  Ftp masters,
Any idea what's going on here? This is from auto-propagation from
security-master to ftp-master. I manually verified that the
md5sum/size of the orig.tar.gz matches in the pools on klecker ries.

Yeah, sorry about that. I just found a bug in dak to do with string vs
integer types which was causing this. I've manually re-injected the
packages the release team have made me aware of (including this kernel
 upload).

 Sorry for the problem,

No problem, thank you for the fix!
