Therefore it seems to me that it would make more sense for the kernel team to maintain it. Sure. Would you be willing to hand over or share maintainership? I would like to share maintainership. Here's the debdiff for the changes I'd like to make now. We should probably import nfs-utils into a VCS somewhere, but I'm not sure how best to do that with a v3.0 package. One approach is git-buildpackage + the following in debian/rules: clean:: [ ! -d .pc ] || [ ! -f .pc/applied-patches ] || QUILT_PATCHES=debian/patches quilt pop -a [ ! -d .pc ] || [ -f .pc/* ] || rm -rf .pc Above (slightly more convoluted) is what was applied to the JACK[1] packaging yesterday, after discussion[2] in the Multimedia list. Off course it depends highly on your preferred VCS habits, but I guess as kernel hackers you would want to use Git so I suspect it won't be far off from your wants. Bug#561203: threads and fork on machine with VIPT-WB cache
On Tue, 2010-04-06 at 08:37 -0500, James Bottomley wrote: (5) Child process B is waken up and sees old value at x in oldpage, through different cache line. B sleeps. This isn't possible. at this point, A and B have the same virtual address and mapping for oldpage this means they are the same cache colour, so they both see the cached value. Perhaps to add more detail to this. In spite of what the arch manual says (it says the congruence stride is 16MB), the congruence stride on all manufactured parisc processors is 4MB. This means that any virtual addresses, regardless of space id, that are equal modulo 4MB have the same cache colour. Bug#561203: threads and fork on machine with VIPT-WB cache
On Tue, 2010-04-06 at 13:57 +0900, NIIBE Yutaka wrote: John David Anglin wrote: It is interesting that in the case of the Debian bug that a thread of the parent process causes the COW break and thereby corrupts its own memory. As far as I can tell, the fork'd child never writes to the memory that causes the fault. Thanks for writing and testing a patch. The case of #561203 is second scenario. I think that this case is relevant to VIVT-WB machine too (provided kernel does copy by kernel address). James Bottomley wrote: So this is going to be a hard sell because of the arch churn. There are, however, three ways to do it with the original signature. Currently, I think that signature change would be inevitable for ptep_set_wrprotect. Well we can't do it by claiming several architectures are wrong in their implementation. We might do it by claiming to need vma knowledge ... however, even if you want the flush, as I said, you don't need to change the signature. 1. implement copy_user_highpage ... this allows us to copy through the child's page cache (which is coherent with the parent's before the cow) and thus pick up any cache changes without a flush Let me think about this way. Well, this would improve both cases of the first scenario of mine and the second scenario. But... I think that even if we would have copy_user_highpage which does copy by user address, we need to flush at ptep_set_wrprotect. I think that we need to keep the condition: no dirty cache for COW page. Think about third scenario of threads and fork: (1) In process A, there are multiple threads, and a thread A-1 invokes fork. We have process B, with a different space identifier color. I don't understand what you mean by space colour ... there's cache colour which refers to the line in the cache to which the the physical memory maps. The way PA is set up, space ID doesn't factor into cache colour. (2) Another thread A-2 in process A runs while A-1 copies memory by dup_mmap. A-2 writes to the address x in a page. Let's call this page oldpage. (3) We have dirty cache for x by A-2 at the time of ptep_set_wrprotect of thread A-1. Suppose that we don't flush here. (4) A-1 finishes copy, and sleeps. (5) Child process B is waken up and sees old value at x in oldpage, through different cache line. B sleeps. This isn't possible. at this point, A and B have the same virtual address and mapping for oldpage this means they are the same cache colour, so they both see the cached value. James (6) A-2 is waken up. A-2 touches the memory again, breaks COW. A-2 copies data on oldpage to newpage. OK, newpage is consistent with copy_user_highpage by user address. Note that during this copy, the cache line of x by A-2 is flushed out to oldpage. It invokes another memory fault and COW break. (I think that this memory fault is unhealthy.) Then, new value goes to x on oldpage (when it's physically tagged cache). A-2 sleeps. (7) Child process B is waken up. When it accesses at x, it sees new value suddenly. If we flush cache to oldpage at ptep_set_wrprotect, this couldn't occur. * * * I know that we should not do threads and fork. It is difficult to define clean semantics. Because another thread may touch memory while a thread which does memory copy for fork, the memory what the child process will see may be inconsistent. For the child, a page might be new, while another page might be old. For VIVT-WB cache machine, I am considering a possibility for the child process to have inconsistent memory even within a single page (when we have no flush at ptep_set_wrprotect). It will be needed for me to talk to linux-arch soon or later. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#576274: additional info
I will continue to test new kernels as they come. This has been a long standing issue. In early 2.6.32 kernels I had an error message right after Grub. This went away with later versions. At the same time my own compiled kernels (from recent linux-source-2.6.32) had a blank screen right after Grub (instead of the error message I got with the precompiled kernels), but otherwise booted fine. I just couldn't get them to display anything. I think they put a lot of work into the Intel graphics driver in the kernel recently. That is why the error message dissapeared. I think the screen blanking only comes after a pm-suspend. Usually when browsing the web. I tried both pm-suspend with and without --auto-quirks. I don't think it has anything to do with Xorg.conf, since I both tried with and without one. So it comes back down to the basic kernel. And I don't think I configured anything there at all, which leads me to think that it might be a real bug after all. I did check for a bit if other people did report this already, but didn't find anything matching my problem very good. Could you keep the bug open for recent kernels please? Maybe someone else will come forward with the same problem. I will see about 2.6.33 from experimental. My internet connection is currently a little slow, so I might only do this in a week or two. Thank you so far for bearing with me. Hi debian-kernel@lists.debian.org, I would like to tell you about a very reliable program I take part in since seven month. I made 510% profit at the moment. they are reliable Hong Kong traders company, working on stock, derivatives, and Forex markets. Their performance is very stable, they make up to 3% daily and they pay investors up to 2.5% daily. HYt fund is really transparent, publishing their trading performance and offering phone, chat, and email support to its members. I think they are the the group to work with in 2010. Compiling linux-image-2.6.26-2-openvz-amd64 from scratch?
Hello, i already wrote two topic about that question in the Debian Users Forums, but was hinted to ask here ... http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=30t=50777 http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5t=50798 In summary, i would like to compile my own version of linux-image-2.6.26-2-openvz-amd64 So far, i got the source and found a big patchfile: debian/patches/features/all/openvz/openvz.patch But sadly, applying it to the kernel source produces errors: patch -p 1 debian/patches/features/all/openvz/openvz.patch Hunk #8 FAILED at 758.Hunk #10 FAILED at 993.2 out of 13 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file fs/exec.c.rejHunk #2 FAILED at 352.1 out of 8 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file fs/read_write.c.rejHunk #4 FAILED at 535.1 out of 7 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file fs/super.c.rejHunk #1 FAILED at 157.1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file include/linux/page-flags.h.rejHunk #1 FAILED at 10.1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file include/net/af_unix.h.rejHunk #1 FAILED at 33.1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file init/version.c.rejHunk #5 FAILED at 326.1 out of 11 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file ipc/shm.c.rejHunk #4 FAILED at 303.1 out of 6 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file kernel/posix-timers.c.rejHunk #12 FAILED at 1183.1 out of 18 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file kernel/signal.c.rejHunk #8 FAILED at 986.1 out of 12 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file kernel/sys.c.rejHunk #4 FAILED at 84.1 out of 6 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file mm/mlock.c.rejHunk #4 FAILED at 448.1 out of 4 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file mm/mremap.c.rejHunk #14 FAILED at 3994.Hunk #16 FAILED at 4036.2 out of 25 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file net/core/dev.c.rejHunk #1 FAILED at 81.1 out of 2 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file net/unix/garbage.c.rej So, my question is, how can i re-compile linux-image-2.6.26-2-openvz-amd64? At best, what steps are required in detail? I did the following to far: apt-get source linux-image-2.6.26-2-openvz-amd64 I found a wike that recommend the following: # ../kernel-patches/all/apply/openvz# make menuconfig But there is no such file "kernel-patches/all/apply/openvz" anywhere on my computer ... But the above debian/patches/features/all/openvz/openvz.patch But that cannot be applied ... So, can anybody help me to get that kernel compiled? Thank you very much! At best, what steps are required in detail? I did the following to far: apt-get source linux-image-2.6.26-2-openvz-amd64 I found a wike that recommend the following: # ../kernel-patches/all/apply/openvz # make menuconfig But there is no such file kernel-patches/all/apply/openvz anywhere on my computer ... But the above debian/patches/features/all/openvz/openvz.patch But that cannot be applied ... So, can anybody help me to get that kernel compiled? Maybe we should look at the Mandriva kernel source to see whether they have a bug fix that isn't included in the mainline kernel. I thought that the driver might be a usb gadget, but neither the Mandriva nor the Debian kernels have that configured. 'USB gadget' drivers are used on USB devices that run Linux, e.g. on some ebook readers. They are not used on PCs. Attacked is the Mandriva /proc/bus/usb/devices file. Note that my device uses rndis_host as its driver, but the kernel messages from my old/present kernel which I sent yesterday indicate that rndis_host fails to get the ethaddr. Yes, I understood that. It is possible that my kernel lacks access to the necessary firmware. I am attaching a listing of the Mandriva /lib/firmware directory. [...] No, no firmware is required. Your advice above is just not enough to get me out of my dark pit ... It stops already at It is possible to apply extra patches to the tree before starting the build, as i just dont know, what to invoke how exactly. And we talk about additional patches, right? The only patch i could find is the mentioned ../openvz.patch. But i cannot understand what to do know, invoke binary or binary-arch, debian/rules source or make -f debian/rules.gen setup_i386_none_686 and what from that needs to be changed for openvz.patch And a debian/bin/test-patches just does not exist in my source!
