Bug#579694: firmware-nonfree: Please include rtl8192su/ r8192s_usb firmware into the (unreleased) firmware-realtek binary package.

Hi

OK, very good. Now what I wish to do is essentially all the remaining
 steps of http://blog.xff.lt/2009/12/28/canyon-cnp-wf518n2-usb-wireless-linux/
but with only modprobe, no kernel compiling. With 2.6.33-2-686 all the
.ko files seem to be there, but no matter how much I modprobe, ifconfig -a
 never shows the device.

The USB ID might be missing, Greg has pushed many new ones into 2.6.34-rc
over the weekend. A quick way to check if a previously unknown USB ID would
be supported by a given kernel module is:

$ lsusb
[...]
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:8171 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
[...]
# modprobe r8192s_usb
# echo 0bda 8171 /sys/bus/usb/drivers/r8192s_usb/new_id
(ideally you connect/ hotplug the USB device only after this step)

In my case
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=c0087580b8d414f6874cfe93d2653212842fcb44

but there are also
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=d615da093eb0f691a73a754589e2a4a24a6f1ca7

and one more between 2.6.32 and 2.6.33
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=488d3749620779ab2668c0dba2962836e51e3cd6

Be aware that r8192s_usb is a staging driver:
r8192s_usb: module is from the staging directory, the quality is unknown,
you have been warned.
...and this really applies. While it works quite well, unless you unplug,
it is pretty noisy with debug and function tracing enabled. Furthermore
even ignoring the mandatory porting to mac80211, it would have a long way
to go, until it may get a chance to move out of staging into net/wireless/.

Are there ANY reports for successful login with amd64 kernel and
32bit userspace? I have tried everything and i didnt get anything to
work.

So IMHO the package could present a popup in the postinst in its i386 variant
and a detected amd64 kernel that it wont work in that constellation.

Package: lm-sensors
Version: 1:3.1.1-4
Severity: normal

I have dell studio 1555 after suspend sensors don't show temperature of some
devces. As a result after some time devises reach top temperature and system
turns off, because of overheat(fans don't working). Full shut down is needed I
am not shure if it is problem of this package but problem is serious.

In an xdm (or some other window manager perhaps) window, do
$ cat /proc/acpi/ibm/video

Voila. The screen goes black, the keyboard becomes useless, and even the
# (sleep 44; reboot)
job you had running on tty1 never completes. I.e., the system is
rendered inoperable. The only thing you can do at this point is hold
down the power button until v... it powers down. Then power back up
and let it recover its ext3 journals etc.

Notes: you have to run this experiment in xwindows. Doing it on tty1
just prints a few lines of text.

Package: qemu-kvm
Version: 0.12.3+dfsg-4
Severity: important

I've installed qemu-kvm under Debian Squeeze and I'm unable to run any virtual
machine. Everytime I try to run an ISO file, this is what happens: http://m
..friendfeed-media.com/e247ae46b58a9d2e48b98305af1c3437d8ca1365 If I use qemu
instead of kvm, it works but is extremely slow!

There is no newline character after #oldline\nnewline in the /etc/crypttab

The \n is needed as whitespace is removed at lines 856 and 857.

Proposed patch included.

Severity: wishlist

dropwatch is a program to improve our ability to detect
and understand packets that get dropped within the (network)
stack.  See https://fedorahosted.org/dropwatch/ for more info.

dropwatch depends on the kernel-side option NET_DROP_MONITOR:
http://lxr.linux.no/#linux+v2.6.33/net/Kconfig#L238
This enables a netlink-based protocol for monitoring of
dropped network packets.

Arguments for inclusion:
*) Detection of packet drops in the network stack becomes
much more precise.
*) The runtime cost of enabling this feature should be
minimal, in the common case where no userspace applications
have enabled the dropwatch tracepoints. More info can
be found in the upstream patch submission:
http://marc.info/?l=linux-netdevm=123609949307113w=2
*) Fedora ships NET_DROP_MONITOR=y and the dropwatch package,
so the config option has received a fair bit of testing.

Bug#502845: [Pkg-iscsi-maintainers] Bug#502845: linux-image-2.6.32-1-amd64 / open-iscsi amd64 login hang

2010-05-03 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf

Are there ANY reports for successful login with amd64 kernel and
32bit userspace? I have tried everything and i didnt get anything to
 work.

None that I am aware of. For most of my testings, the focus was only on a 64
= 64 or a 32 = 32 config.

So IMHO the package could present a popup in the postinst in its i386
variant and a detected amd64 kernel that it wont work in that
 constellation.

I think README.Debian should be enough. The way open-iscsi currently is in
Debian, a user will be required to go and have a read of the README.Debian
doc. Having it in postinst scripts will only convey the message at install
time.

PS: I have already committed the content to the package. A new upload should
be soon this week.

Regards,
Ritesh

Bug#579694: firmware-nonfree: Please include rtl8192su/ r8192s_usb firmware into the (unreleased) firmware-realtek binary package.

2010-05-03 Thread jidanni
OK, say I don't want to wait for a .deb containing
 http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=c0087580b8d414f6874cfe93d2653212842fcb44
to be available, even in debian-experimental distribution.
Can I just write a shell script containing modprobes etc.,
thus being able to avoid becomming a kernel hacker here at age 50 with my
rural modem line?

...and this really applies. While it works quite well, unless you unplug,
it is pretty noisy with debug and function tracing enabled. Furthermore

Certainly I could just give a modprobe parameter to get it to shut up?

even ignoring the mandatory porting to mac80211, it would have a long way
to go, until it may get a chance to move out of staging into net/wireless/.

Ah, advanced topics... I'll just modprobe what ever I'm told to.

Bug#580050: linux-image-2.6.32-3-amd64: kcryptd crashes under heavy I/O

2010-05-03 Thread Juha Koho
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-9
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Hello,

I have the following setup in my system: 6 x 500GB drives with software RAID6 +
encryption (luks) + LVM. This is a new installation and I'm having troubles
with encryption. Every once and a while kcryptd crashes and system becomes
unresponsive. Well it responds to ping and currently running applications will
continue running (if they don't need disk access I suppose) but I'm unable to
ssh to the box anymore or run any new applications.

These crashes (always?) happen when there are lots of I/O going on. Ie. I can
reproduce these crashes easily.

I have tested this with latest stable kernel version 2.6.33.3 but the problem
persists.

I don't know if this is related to this or a different bug but I also noticed
that when I transfer lots of files over nfs from my previous system about 5% of
these files are corrupted. Ie. checksums do not match. Sometimes I need to
transfer these files several times before everything is transferred ok. I'm
able to transfer these files to my other box with no problems. Data gets
corrupted only when transferring files to the box having this kcryptd problem.

Nothing appears in system logs after the crash but I was able to get the
following using netconsole:

software RAID6 + encryption (luks) + LVM. This is a new installation

These crashes (always?) happen when there are lots of I/O going on.

Bug#580074: linux-image-2.6-686: acerhdf module: automatically start the fan control

2010-05-03 Thread Debian Bugs
Package: linux-image-2.6-686
Version: 2.6.32+25
Severity: normal

Although the acer fan control kernel module seems to be available (acerhdf), it
did not work out-of-the-box. To automatically start the fan control you would
need(?) do [1]:
sudo 'echo options acerhdf kernelmode=1 /etc/modprobe.d/acerhdf.conf'

Using an Acer Aspire One 150L ZG5 BIOS 3310, but perhaps all kernels need it
(this is an Intel Atom based netbook).

Failing to do so results in a continuously spinning (small, noisy) cooling fan
irrespective of temperature, unnecessarily draining battery on the netbook.

This is awesome. ON the non-xen kernel, nouveau works nice. It also does
 extended display. xrandr works.

So the problem is only seen with nouveau + Xen kernel (2.6.32-4-xen-686)

I am again attaching the dmesg logs. This time, there's no kernel errors.

Reassigning to the kernel, thanks.

Bug#580155: mount: Unclear message - mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd.

2010-05-03 Thread Jari Aalto
Package: mount
Version: 2.16.2-0
Severity: minor

A typical situation:

$ umount -fl /home ; mount /home
umount: /home: not mounted
mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking.
mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd.
mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified

Hm?

$ ls /etc/init.d/*stat*
noting

Eh?
$ /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server stop ; /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server start

That should do it, let's check:

$ umount -fl /home ; mount /home
umount: /home: not mounted
mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking.
mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd.
mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified

No kidding? ..it appears that the magic happens in:

$ /etc/init.d/nfs-common stop ; /etc/init.d/nfs-common start
$ umount -fl /home ; mount /home
BINGO!

SUGGESTION

If possible, please improve the error message to point to restart

/etc/init.d/nfs-common

under Debian, because the message start statd isn't very helpful.

Bug#568207: Test results with 2.6.34-rc6

2010-05-03 Thread Chuan-kai Lin
I tested 2.6.34-rc6 yesterday (with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.11.0-1
and xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.6.901-3), and the new kernel showed some
improvement. Even with an external monitor attached to my ThinkPad X30
laptop, the X server starts correctly and provides a stable graphics
display on the internel LCD screen. In other words, with 2.6.34-rc6, I
no longer need to unplug the external monitor before starting X to avoid
the blank screen problem.

Unfortunately, some problems remain:

 * Extensive rendering artifacts at 24bpp (16bpp is fine).

 * Flashing and jumping (horizontally) images on the external monitor.
It looks like the kernel driver failed to properly configure the VGA
output DAC. Switching the external monitor off-and-on with xrandr
has no effect on the problem (i.e., it does not help).

For now I am staying with 2.6.34-rc5.
