Bug#584744: linux-2.6: radeonfb builtin on sparc and powerpc
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.32-10 Severity: important Hi, the sid kernel has radeonfb builtin on some archs: debian/config/powerpc/config:CONFIG_FB_RADEON=y debian/config/sparc/config:CONFIG_FB_RADEON=y This is likely to conflict with the fb provided by the radeon drm driver with kms. Maybe they can be made =m instead? Cheers, Julien signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#583949: 2.6.32-3-amd64 can't read DVDs/CDs (sometimes)
I am seeing this bug too on both AMD64 and Alpha architectures. Sometimes DVD plays up with error messages (similar to those given by original reporter; see below) and doesn't seem to recover until a reboot. When the errors start typically I can get the disc mounted (unlike the original reporter) but can't read much from it. My hardware is as follows: AMD64 machine running Debian testing: kernel: 2.6.32-3-amd64 (Debian kernel) SATA controller: 00:09.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] SATA Controller (non-AHCI mode) (rev a2) DVD drive: Lite-On ATAPI iHAS120 6 7L0F I tried an old unstable installation (it hasn't been upgraded for 2 or 3 months) that is still hanging around on another partition. It has the 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 Debian kernel and it seemed to work okay, but I really need to test it further to be really sure as I have since discovered that the disc errors may take a few disc changes before they start to appear. Alpha running Debian unstable: kernel: 2.6.34 (compiled from www.kernel.org) SATA controller: 0001:03:09.0 RAID bus controller: Silicon Image, Inc. SiI 3114 [SATALink/SATARaid] Serial ATA Controller (rev 02) DVD drive: Lite-On ATAPI DVD A DH20A3S 9P54 On the Alpha I took it back to a 2.6.32.7 kernel and still could get the disc errors to appear. To take the kernel back any earlier I will probably have to create a patched kernel (udev didn't create the necessary system disk device nodes when I tried an even earlier kernel -- missing system calls maybe?). This Alpha also has an old Compaq IDE CD-ROM drive which I use for booting. It has also taken to spitting out errors since about 2.6.32 kernel or maybe 2.6.31, but I have really never cared since I only use it for booting and that is working fine. Example of the DVD errors I am getting on the Alpha: [240094.915157] UDF-fs: Partition marked readonly; forcing readonly mount [240094.960079] UDF-fs INFO UDF: Mounting volume 'SPARTACUS', timestamp 2000/11/02 17:15 (1000) [240099.128045] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE [240099.128045] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current] [240099.128045] sr 2:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Forgot to mention: sysprof or oprofile profiles of slow and fast runs might be interesting, at least if the CPU is pegged during the runs. Here are 2 sysprof runs: - UMS / fast: - kernel 11.25% - X 77.20% - KMS / slow: - kernel 90.28% - X 5.79% Unfortunately, there's no information about where in the kernel the cycles are burnt. This information should be available with sysprof 1.1.x and a kernel with the performance counter/event framework. I think it could confirm my suspicion below, reassigning to the kernel. Would be great if you could try if it's better with a 2.6.33 or 2.6.34 kernel. Anyway, this probably means it's an issue in the kernel, not the X driver. May be solved already in newer kernels, there have been some AGP performance improvements which I'm not sure have made it into Debian's 2.6.32 DRM backport. BTW, does booting the kernel with radeon.agpmode=-1 work around the problem? It'll make things slower in general but it looks like it should help for this problem, which would further confirm the above. The test runs at 65FPS with radeon.agpmode=-1 (~3-4x faster than without this option, but ~4-5x slower than without KMS). -- Sylvain -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. If there is going to be another kernel rebuild before lenny, it would be great to enable these drivers. As cards are sparc-specific, it is sufficient to enable them for sparc. Also, it would be nice to apply the attached simple patch, which adds the PCI ID of a card I have in my SunBlade 1000 [1], it appears that it's the same chip (same device ID), but manufactured by a different company. I've sent the patch to David Miller to be included upstream, however haven't heard back yet [2]. It appears that CONFIG_FB_XVR500 and CONFIG_FB_XVR2500 are no longer set in newer kernels than the kernel shipped with Lenny (linux-image-2.6.26-2-sparc64-smp). This causes workstations to because unresponsive at the console when the kernel attempts to handoff the console output to the framebuffer in newer versions of the kernel (linux-image-2.6.32-3-sparc64-smp). In order to fix this problem, I had to use a serial console on the workstation and recompile the kernel with both options re-enabled and everything works fine. I tried to copy those missing scripts from the kernel source into linux-headers-2.6.18-1/arch/ia64/scripts, but I get some other warnings then: make -C /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.18-1-mckinley/ M=$PWD gcc-4.1: /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.18-1-mckinley/arch/ia64/scripts/check-segrel.S: No such file or directory objdump: '/tmp/out19575': No such file /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.18-1-mckinley/arch/ia64/scripts/toolchain-flags: line 19: [: !=: unary operator expected gcc-4.1: /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.18-1-mckinley/arch/ia64/scripts/check-text-align.S: No such file or directory gcc-4.1: no input files readelf: Error: '/tmp/out19575': No such file gcc-4.1: /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.18-1-mckinley/arch/ia64/scripts/check-gas-asm.S: No such file or directorygcc-4.1: no input files objdump: '/tmp/out19593.o': No such file /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.18-1-mckinley/arch/ia64/scripts/check-gas: line 10: [: !=: unary operator expected Copying the entire arch/ia64/scripts/ directory from a source tree seems to fix all the issues. No errors in the logs, no oops, no BUG, nothing - just a hard lock. No keyboard LED response and no sysrq functionality worked. Sometimes the system wouldn't complete the boot process without freezing. Sometimes it would last three minutes or so before freezing. I could reproduce the lockup with cat /dev/zero file. Every time, within 10 seconds, the system would freeze. After a lot of trial, error, and searching, I discovered that the e_powersaver module was being loaded and the lockups went away if I unloaded it. The kernel build help text indicates that the module shouldn't ever be used, and is highly dangerous: This adds the CPUFreq driver for VIA C7 processors. However, this driver does not have any safeguards to prevent operating the CPU out of spec and is thus considered dangerous. Please use the regular ACPI cpufreq driver, enabled by CONFIG_X86_ACPI_CPUFREQ. I have blacklisted this module and suspect that it should be blacklisted by default. It seems possible that Debian bug #563941 is related to this issue as well, but there's not enough info in the report for me to be sure. Bug#584784: also applies to unstable
On Sun, 2010-06-06 at 23:18 +0200, Willi Mann wrote: Kernel panic - not syncing: To avoid data corruption io_map_base MUST be set with multiple PCI domains. has been applied on all PCI MIPS systems since Linux 2.6.24. Are you quite sure that this was introduced by the kernel upgrade and not a qemu upgrade. Yes, I didn't change the qemu version, it's really only the kernel that changed. Attached is the dmesg output of the working kernel, version 2.6.32-9. OK, it looks like this is due to an botched switch from IDE to libata drivers on MIPS. The qemu emulated HD controller is now being handled by the ide-generic driver whereas it should have been switched from piix to ata_piix, and ide-generic triggers this panic for reasons I don't fully understand. This will get fixed, but not immediately. Ben. -- Ben Hutchings Once a job is fouled up, anything done to improve it makes it worse. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.34-1~experimental.2 SCSI_IPR depends only on PCI SCSI ATA, but ipr.c now uses writeq() which is not defined for all architectures. Bug#584846: linux-2.6: Detects only 64MB and fails to boot on Intel Green City board if e820 hooked by GRUB2
Package: linux-2.6 Severity: normal In the course of other testing, I need to boot systems using GRUB2 from a USB drive. To support systems that can't find their boot drive if the drive numbering changes, I use GRUB2's drivemap command like this: set root=(hd1) drivemap (hd0) (hd1) chainloader +1 boot This results in GRUB2 hooking the e820 interrupt to reserve memory for its hook of the BIOS disk interrupt. However, note that this problem *also* occurs if GRUB2 hooks e820 and does not run drivemap (part of the testing involves allocating persistent memory for other purposes). This works fine with most OSes. It works with the Linux 2.6.26 kernel shipped in Lenny (specifically, linux-image-2.6.26-2-amd64 version 2.6.26-22lenny1). However, if I try it with 2.6.32, as shipped in unstable or backports, it fails to boot. From what I can see of the boot messages, and from the rare occasions when it manages to give me a shell in the initramfs with a working keyboard, it looks like Linux only detects 64MB of memory, goes nuts with the OOM killer on processes essential to booting (udev, for instance), and usually ends by panicing because it can't find something to kill. (Not surprising when booting a 16-way or 24-way SMP system with only 64MB of RAM.) I've manually verified the e820 map provided by the GRUB2-hooked interrupt (after booting a kernel that *does* boot), and it looks perfectly correct; thus, I don't think the problem lies in GRUB2, but in the kernel. Given the nature of the problem, it proves fairly difficult to extract the boot messages, but I can try to gather more information if you have a suggestion for what to look for. I may be able to bisect this in the future. - Josh Triplett -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0.4 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-bpo.3-amd64 (SMP w/16 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
