Bug#588863: linux-image-2.6-686: rt3090sta module requires /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat
Package: linux-image-2.6-686 Version: 2.6.32+27 Severity: normal The rt3090sta module loads but does not function if the file /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat is not present, thus breaking wifi for devices using this module. This file corresponds to the wrong kernel module name and is not distributed in any debian package. Note that the driver functions correctly if the file is present but empty. The file is reported as being optional for RT2860 but appears manditory for rt3090. Comparing rt2860/rt_profile.c and rt3090/rt_profile.c shows some differences in the implementation of RTMPReadParametersHook which is the function which reads the file. rt2860 has a retval value which does not appear to be used. The function only returns failure if it cannot allocate a buffer to read the ini file and its parameters. If it doesn't open the file the meat of the function is skipped and the function returns NDIS_STATUS_SUCCESS anyway. rt3090 initializes retval to NDIS_STATUS_FAILURE. This is unchanged if there is an error opening the file and is returned at the end of the function. This propogates through to abort the module. Output from dmesg when the file is not present: [ 26.470395] RX DESC f6496000 size = 2048 [ 26.471058] <-- RTMPAllocTxRxRingMemory, Status=0 [ 26.475292] RtmpOSFileOpen(): Error 2 opening /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat [ 26.475305] Open file "/etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat" failed! Ah, sorry, I thought the fix was clear from the bug report: Peter Palfrader has bisected it down to commit 1345126c "x86, paravirt: Add a global synchronization point for pvclock" which sounds very reasonable, IMHO. See http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1007.0/02385.html To be absolutely sure this is correct, I just built a kernel based on your 2.6.32-17 with commit 1345126c reverted, and that does indeed boot under KVM. The revert patch is attached. Please try it. I do hope this goes into next 2.6.32-stable as well, although the discussion following Peter Palfrader's bisect seems a bit discouraging. "that patch shouldn't affect anything outside..." Right. Well, it does. So please revert it in stable. The oops is reproducible and occurs at each boot, apparently while loading parport_pc as requested by /etc/init.d/cups. My printer is a USB printer and has been off the whole time. 2.6.33-2-orion5x from experimental exhibits the same oops (hence the appearance of experimental in a couple of package versions below). I've attached an excerpt from dpkg.log to show which packages were updated before the oops started happening. I'm not familiar with reporting kernel bugs so please let me know if I can provide additional information. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 2.6.32-5-orion5x (Debian 2.6.32-15) (b...@decadent.org.uk) (gcc version 4.3.5 (Debian 4.3.5-1) ) #1 Fri Jun 4 11:47:35 UTC 2010 ** Command line: root=/dev/sda2 ro ** Tainted: D (128) * Kernel has oopsed before. ** Kernel log: [ 26.650873] VFP support v0.3: not present [ 26.651762] registered taskstats version 1 [ 26.653704] rtc-rs5c372 0-0032: setting system clock to 2010-07-05 17:17:27 UTC (1278350247) [ 26.653844] Initalizing network drop monitor service [ 26.654085] Freeing init memory: 120K [ 26.857810] udev: starting version 158 [ 27.790004] SCSI subsystem initialized [ 28.245090] libata version 3.00 loaded. Without this patch bonding seems to work with my ax88178 based, but when making this device the active no packets are transmitted. Switching back to the primary active device (e1000) works - no errors, oops, panic. When applying this patch to the current squeeze kernel sources (2.6.32-15), compiling and installing it, the ax88178 based adapter works as expected in bonding mode active/backup. This works also on a lenny system with the backported squeeze kernel. It would be nice if this patch could be included in squeeze. P.S. Possibly this is related to bug 444043. This happens on 2.6.32-3-686, 2.6.32-5-686, and 2.6.33-2-686 from experimental, but not at all on the earlier squeeze kernel 2.6.30-2-686. Soon after this the system locks up completely. This makes the b43 driver in the current kernels more or less unusable for me. There appear to be two competing forked projects writing these drivers, one by Manu Abraham (which I think is the original), and one by Igor M. Liplianin. I currently run the former, while the latter has been recommended to me recently. Both appear to be in active development. I make no attempt to recommend one of the other, in fact, it seems very hard to judge which is the best. I have also been told that it is unlikely that these drivers will go into the mainline kernels any time soon. In spite of these difficulties, the driver is important for DVB-support in Debian, and so I hope someone better qualified than me can take a look and choose one for packaging. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0.3 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable'), (90, 'unstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: linux-2.6 Source-Version: 2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of linux-2.6, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: firmware-linux-free_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/firmware-linux-free_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb linux-2.6_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1.diff.gz to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-2.6_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1.diff.gz linux-2.6_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1.dsc to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-2.6_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1.dsc linux-2.6_2.6.35~rc4.orig.tar.gz to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-2.6_2.6.35~rc4.orig.tar.gz linux-base_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-base_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb linux-doc-2.6.35_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-doc-2.6.35_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb linux-manual-2.6.35_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-manual-2.6.35_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb linux-patch-debian-2.6.35_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-patch-debian-2.6.35_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb linux-source-2.6.35_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-source-2.6.35_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb linux-support-2.6.35-rc4_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb to main/l/linux-2.6/linux-support-2.6.35-rc4_2.6.35~rc4-1~experimental.1_all.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. Bug#588426: linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64: fail to boot in a kvm virtual machine
Vincent Danjean writes: > Package: linux-2.6 > Version: 2.6.32-16 > Severity: important [..] > PS: the severity can be increased if lots of people experiments the same thing > or lowered if this is specific to my configuration. At first, I thought that the severity was appropriate as this bug doesn't break *all* systems, and the kernel is somewhat special in that most bugs will affect "the whole system". But I must admit that I was a bit surprised when 2.6.32-17 was uploaded without a fix for this problem. It makes me wonder if the severity shouldn't have been higher after all Just to be clear: This bug does break all KVM based systems, making them completely unbootable, and requiring console access to fix. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of KVM based hosting solutions around where this will be a severe problem. Is KVM a supported "hardware" platform i Debian? I would expect so. If it is, then please raise the severity of this bug high enough to reflect this. Thanks, Bjørn -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
