Bug#593683: linux-2.6 - images does not conflict with pre-policy versions of bootloaders

2010-09-17 Thread Steve Langasek
reopen 593683
thanks

Hi guys,

s390-tools, lilo, and elilo are the only bootloaders for which Breaks: were
added in the recent upload. However, there are reports[1],[2] of serious
upgrade failures resulting from not upgrading grub before trying to upgrade
the kernel; and the grub in lenny definitely does not comply with the new
kernel hooks policy (/etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-grub only exists in
the squeeze versions). Is this an oversight, or is there some other
explanation for why grub was being left in an inconsistent state for these
users?

(Reopening the bug out of an abundance of caution; if lenny grub really
doesn't need to be added to the Breaks, please close again - but please also
let me know why, so we can write the release notes appropriately.)

Bug#597132: Simple workaround

2010-09-17 Thread David Baron
Simply remove extlinux. If one is not using this bootloader, get rid of it for
now. The kernel will now install.

Gets update bootloader warning. Re-run lilo or alternative just to be sure.

Bug#595223: dvb-scan with ordinary 2.6.32-5-amd64

2010-09-17 Thread Kloana

 Hi,

sorry for the delay. Today i checked channel scanning with ordinary
2.6.32-er kernel, and this is working just fine. Only with xen-kernel it
won't work!

I hope this helped to fix the problem, if you have further questions
don't hesitate to contact me!

Kernels after 2.6.18-6 hang up on ACER Aspire with Athlon X2

2010-09-17 Thread Hank J. van Leuvensteijn

Hello,

I've tried to find info on this problem, but don't know where to go. I
need some help.

I also don't know where else to ask this question, if there is a better
place, please excuse my ignorance and point me there.

My Aspire (desktop) with Athlon X2 4800+ hangs on boot after bringing up
the second processor on all kernels newer than 2.6.18-6 whereas 2.6.18-6
works fine, both processors up and sharing load etc.

I don't know what other info you need to help me, so I would also very
much appreciate some pointers there.

Thank you very much,

Hank J. van Leuvensteijn.

Bug#584881: Deadlock in md barrier code? / RAID1 / LVM CoW snapshot + ext3 / Debian 5.0 - lenny 2.6.26 kernel

2010-09-17 Thread Tim Small

Hi,

I recently posted the below message to linux-raid, but perhaps it should
have gone here first... Perhaps Neil Brown will have some bright ideas.

Common factors on all three pieces of hardware seeing the problem seem
to have been:

Lenny 2.6.26 kernel
Serial console
md with lvm snapshots
Dell hardware
4 or more cores

HTH,

Tim.

Hi,

I have a box with a relatively simple setup:

sda + sdb are 1TB SATA drives attached to an Intel ICH10.
Three partitions on each drive, three md raid1s built on top of these:

md0 /
md1 swap
md2 LVM PV

During resync about a week ago, processes seemed to deadlock on I/O, the
machine was still alive but with a load of 100+. A USB drive happened
to be mounted, so I managed to save /var/log/kern.log At the time of
the problem, the monthly RAID check was in progress. On reboot, a
rebuild commenced, and the same deadlock seemed to occur between roughly
2 minutes and 15 minutes after boot.

At this point, the server was running on a Dell PE R300 (12G RAM,
quad-core), with an LSI SAS controller and 2x 500G SATA drives. I
shifted all the data onto a spare box (Dell PE R210, ICH10R, 1x1TB
drive, 8G RAM, quad-core+HT), with only a single drive, so I created the
md RAID1s with just a single drive in each. The original box was put
offline with the idea of me debugging it soon.

This morning, I added in a second 1TB drive, and during the resync
(approx 1 hour in), the deadlock up occurred again. The resync had
stopped, and any attempt to write to md2 would deadlock the process in
question. I think it was doing an rsnaphot backup to a USB drive at the
time the initial problem occurred - this creates an LVM snapshot device
on top of md2 for the duration of the backup for each filesystem backed
up (there are two at the moment), and I suppose this results in lots of
read-copy-update operations - the mounting of the snapshots shows up in
the logs as the fs-mounts, and subsequent orphan_cleanups. As the
snapshot survives the reboot, I assume this is what triggers the
subsequent lockup after the machine has rebooted.

I got a couple of 'echo w /proc/sysrq-trigger' sets of output this
time... Edited copies of kern.log are attached - looks like it's
barrier related. I'd guess the combination of the LVM CoW snapshot, and
the RAID resync are tickling this bug.

Any thoughts? Maybe this is related to Debian bug #584881 -
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=584881

... since the kernel is essentially the same.

I can do some debugging on this out-of-office-hours, or can probably
resurrect the original hardware to debug that too.

Logs are here:

http://buttersideup.com/files/md-raid1-lockup-lvm-snapshot/

I think vger binned the first version of this email (with the logs
attached) - so apologies if you've ended up with two copies of this email...

Tim.

I think it is a reason, that LED indicators don't work at all:
i can press caps lock or num lock, but it doesn't affect at LED at all, it
affects only on keyboard behaviour. and this LED is my layout indicator.
it's too hard to work without it :(

By the way keyboard if Genius GK-04008/C and it worked perfect with old
computer (there was debian since debian etch). This bug is only with new
hardware. I tried to use this keyboard with old one and all is fine. New
hardware is: AMD Athlon II X2 215 with Gigabyte M52L-S3P. Old one was AMD
Athlon Dual Core 4050 with EliteGroup GeForce6100PMM2 SocketAM2.

Also setleds from VT shows nothing about caps lock. it's always off. Others
(num and scroll) it shows correct, but leds are always turned on.

By the way, my keyboard configuration:

  $ grep -vE ^#|^$ /etc/default/keyboard

Hi,

please consider cherry-picking the patch to mount cgroupfs at
/sys/fs/cgroup [1]. This patch will be in upstream 2.6.36 and has been
acked by the kernel cgroup and libcgroup maintainer.
Having it in the default Debian kernel would simplify running systemd, which
uses cgroups to monitor processes.
Without this patch, the cgroupfs for systemd will be mounted at /cgroup
and it would be preferable to not introduce another toplevel directory.

Thanks for considering,
Michael

Hi,

I get no DHCP offers on the r8169 device since the upgrade to 2.6.26-22lenny1.

Reverting to 2.6.26-22 does not fix the problem.

Reverting to 2.6.26-21lenny4 *does* fix the problem.

Please contact me for more info.

Your package contains new components which requires manual editing of
the override file. It is ok otherwise, so please be patient. New
packages are usually added to the override file about once a week.

You may have gotten the distribution wrong. You'll get warnings above
if files already exist in other distributions.
