Bug#600959: boot warnings too fast to read and not saved in any file nor dmesg

2010-10-22 Thread jidanni
BH == Ben Hutchings b...@decadent.org.uk writes:

BH This looks the same as #561764, reported by... you.

I see. Anyways here's a little discovery I made. If it is not
technologically possible to put such messages in files like dmesg, then
at least they could be left on the screen:

On one of my computers, the desktop with the detached terminal, the
messages are still visible with ShiftPgUp. (In contrast to the laptops,
where the farthest as ShiftPgUp reaches is the swap message. I.e., the
first few items from /sbin/init to before /etc/rcS.d/S08checkroot.sh are
not in any logs nor left on the console still.)

Using a pencil from the desktop, I see they were roughly:
INIT: version 2.88 starting
Using Makefile ... runlevels
Starting hotplug...
Synthesizing hotplug...
Waiting for /dev ... fully pop...
And then the swap message, which is the first to be left on the top of
other consoles too.

Bug#598323: linux-image-2.6.35.6: Servers reboot on heavy load on DRBD+OCFS2 partition

Hello!

Sorry for such big delay - I was ill and then on vacation.
I you still have an interest in this problem - I have new results.

ocfs2 is already included in the kernel package and you should use that.
OCFS2-1.4.4-3(from testing) - it is a userspace utility like mkfs.ocfs2.
Of course I use driver from kernel.

While update(aptitude safe-upgrade) first node I get kernel panic.

This panic shows Tainted: G D which means there was a previous oops
message. You need to record the first one.

Well I not got it twice.

I can confirm what on configuration above(all testing + kernel
2.6.36-rc5) I don`t got a reboot. iozone complete successfully without
any problems so yes - it is a kernel relaited problem. I retest it on
latest 2.6.32 from testing - and got reboot.

So... what should I do now?

I didn't think much changed xen-wise between these two intervals but I

I assume that the versions of xen-hypervisor* and xen-utils* have not

Update: It's not in SSH/crypto but a network problem

I tried netcat over network and the file also got corrupted (5x OK, 1x
corrupt, 1GB file - former swap file, so half random data and half
zeroes). There are ~10 bytes corrupted in the middle of the file,
very close together (on one page in vbindiff) - so probably one
packet/fragment/frame. I also have tcpdump record of the whole
connection - but nothing apparently fishy there.

Right now I'm testing without netfilter enabled and so far so good
(also had to reboot so it might have fixed itself).
Memtest done without a problem via memtester on 75% of memory, proper
 memtest86 will be done tonight.

Any suggestions where to go next? I'm thinking of making a 1GB
plaintext file so that the corruption will be readable and searchable
in a data stream and I can inspect the corrupted packets - but what
 to look for?

Hello Jan,

I'm observing this bug every day I resume my pc from hibernation,
then running some big network transfer ; I notice that because, using
SSH as network transport, it detects any data corruption.
Once the SSH transfert failed, the subsequent ones works … until next
hibernation / resume cycle ! I'm not sure whether it appears on a normal boot.

Fred.

Hello there, with versions above 2.6.32-23 of

the following bug:

Does the problem occur with -25/-26 when it is used in the dom0 or the
domU or both?

We only use paravirtualized guests so I guess we can say both since we
use the same kernel for dom0 and domU

Do you get any output on the domU console corresponding with the
migration attempt? (perhaps increase log level with echo 9
/proc/sysrq-trigger before the suspend attempt)

we just tried and the domU gave this output on its console:

We cannot suspend any domU machine so migration and save are broken,
because they both use the suspension. On /var/log/xen/xend.log I have:

[snip, thanks]

reverting to 2.6.32-23 made the suspension work again

I didn't think much changed xen-wise between these two intervals but I
will check. I assume that the versions of xen-hypervisor* and xen-utils* have
not
changed?

Ian.

You assume right :) we only upgraded the kernel

Bug#597658: Wouldn't it be better solved the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf?

2010-10-22 Thread Klaus Umbach
Wouldn't it be better, to put the module in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf,
instead of disabling it completely? So those who are able to use it, can
still load it and do not have to build their own kernel.

This module lowers the CPU usage of kcryptd from 90% to 25% on my machine,
when writing to disk. So it would be great to have it.

I understand that this problem may be related to the lost of
connectivity problems we had in bugs 597865, 596635, 598057.
As we escaped from *-23 kernel to solve these we met this other
problem also related to netfront smartpoll not being disabled

anyway we'll keep the *-23 kernel for the time being till the additional
patches will be merged with the debian kernel

Bug#601017: e1000e fails dhcp during netinst boot

2010-10-22 Thread Anthony L. Awtrey
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-26

Booting the netinst (or PXE) image on a Panasonic Toughbook CF-19m4
fails to get a DHCP address. If you run these commands:

 # modprobe -r e1000e
 # modprobe e1000e

you can retry automatic configuration a few times and eventually get an
address.

lspci says the network card is:

8086:10ea Intel Corporation 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 06)

I found this upstream bug:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15944

which lead to this mailing list:

http://marc.info/?t=12735390277r=1w=3

which lead to this patch:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/davem/net-next-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=627c8a041f7aaaea93c766f69bd61d952a277586

After taking a look at the 2.6.32 linux source, it does not look like it
would apply cleanly. Hope this helps!

Tony

2010-10-22 Thread Jon Daley
I am not clear on why this is marked won't fix - is the upgrade path that
I found that proper way to do it?

e.g. Whenever the dkms build doesn't work due to kernel changes, uninstall
virtualbox-ose-dkms, and then reinstall it, so it picks up the new
changes?

No-one has explained exactly what change affects VirtualBox, so there is
no way we can revert it. And we are not going to make an ABI bump.

e.g. Whenever the dkms build doesn't work due to kernel changes,
uninstall virtualbox-ose-dkms, and then reinstall it, so it picks up the
 new changes?

Or use 'dkms build' to force a rebuild. (I'm not sure exactly how to do
that.)

Ben.

Bug#600155: [50/66] r6040: Fix multicast list iteration when hash filter is used

2010-10-22 Thread Greg KH
2.6.32-stable review patch. If anyone has any objections, please let us know.

From: Ben Hutchings b...@decadent.org.uk

This was fixed in mainline by the interface change made in commit

  for (i = 0, dmi; (i  dev-mc_count)  (i  MCAST_MAX); i++) {
Any reason for the dmi in the above line? As far as I can see it is a
 nop.

Look closer at the for loop please.

thanks,

Bug#601040: /usr/src/linux-kbuild-2.6.32: installed as dangling symlink

2010-10-22 Thread Jeffrey Sheinberg
Package: linux-kbuild-2.6.32
Version: 2.6.32-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

The symlink,

/usr/src/linux-kbuild-2.6.32

was installed as a dangling symlink, because on my system /usr/src/ is
not on the same filesystem as /usr/lib/,

$ realpath /usr/src
/fs/dc/usr-src

$ realpath /usr/lib
/usr/lib

Here is how the symlinks command reports it,

dangling: /fs/dc/usr-src/linux-kbuild-2.6.32 -
../lib/linux-kbuild-2.6.32

Please install as an absolute symlink, eg,

# ln -s /usr/lib/linux-kbuild-2.6.32 /usr/src/linux-kbuild-2.6.32

Thanks,

Jeffrey Sheinberg

It doesn't, but it doesn't do any harm either. The loop has been
rewritten in mainline.

Agreed, it causes no problems, but it seems like it was intended to be
the dmi init, i.e.

for (i = 0, dmi = dev-mc_list; ...

I suppose it doesn't really matter but either removing the dmi in the
for loop or moving the dmi init in there would make more sense to me.

I really should learn to explain myself fully. Sorry for taking up
your time.

Thanks,

Jack

This is not a supported configuration. You should bind-mount
/fs/dc/usr-src to /usr/src instead of using a symlink.

Here is how the symlinks command reports it,

 dangling: /fs/dc/usr-src/linux-kbuild-2.6.32 -

Debian policy §10.5 says we should use a relative link here.

Ben.
