Bug#614342: linux-source-2.6.37: intel backlight patch
Package: linux-source-2.6.37 Version: 2.6.37-1 Severity: normal Tags: upstream sid patch It is a known issue upstream that on Intel GPUs when DPMS blanks the screen the backlight stays turned off when the screen is turned back on. Chris Wilson committed a patch for this to upstream here https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22672#c42 which can be downloaded here https://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=43272 and I can confirm that this patch fixes the issue with 2.6.37. Upstream it will be part of 2.6.38. -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.37def2 (PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=de_AT.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_AT.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#611750: 2nd update (Re: Bug#613790: pm-utils: eeepc 1005 PE recently stopped resuming from hibernate)
Le Fri, 18 Feb 2011 22:56:20 +0100, Emmanuel Charpentier emm.charpent...@free.fr a écrit : [ I Cc 611...@bugs.debian.org, which mi bug report seems to be a duplicate of... ] and also 611551 (and perhaps others)… Dear all, A couple more data points : 1) I tried Sebastian Andrzej Siewio's 2.6.30 partially unpatched kernel, to no avail : my eee 1005PE still rebooted when trying to resume from hibernation (yes, I first rebooted on this partially patched kernel *before* hibernating...). I'm agree. 2) restoring a 2.6.29 kernel from snapshots.debian.org solved the problem (for some small value of solution). ok. Hence : 1) At least on some eee hardware, drm-i915-overlay-ensure-that-the-reg_bo-is-in-the-gtt-prior-to-writing.patch is *not* the sole culprit. 2) Temporarily pinning the linux-image-2.6.32-5-586 package to 2.6.30 may alleviate the problem, but cuts you off the opportunity to auto-upgrade to a future and hyothetical 2.6.31 package. Is there a way to configure apt to still auto-update if possible but to avoid 2.6.30 ? Question : Did someone tried to recompile the 2.6.30 package with the *three* drm-i915 patches reversed ? I used to recompile my kernels (after all, I'm following Debian on and off since about 1998...), but I'm no longer aware of the current official procedures to do so (any pointer to a *synthetic* doc ? ) and somewhat reluctant to undertake this on a netbook... :-). I'll try, but at first, I'll do a try to suggestion of bug #611551 (disabling kprobes), then if I don't succeed restoring hibernation on my eeepc, trying 2.6.32-30 kernel without 3 drm-i915 patches disabled. I already have to recompile my own kernel to apply a patch about my ethernet interface (also a problem about hibernation, see #577747). I'll post results here (probably by end of week). regards, Fred. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#614221: linux-image-2.6.37-1-powerpc: 2.6.37-1-powerpc does not but on iMac G3
Hi, 2011/2/20 Ben Hutchings b...@decadent.org.uk: On Sun, 2011-02-20 at 10:17 -0300, Gunther Furtado wrote: Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.37-1 Severity: critical Tags: d-i Justification: breaks the whole system Hi, First of all: I cannot run reportbug while running the package I am reporting this bug because I cannot boot from it. I suspect this is due to my changes to framebuffer driver selection, which you obviously noticed. The problem is that on PowerPC systems we cannot assume hardware support for a text mode (as on PCs) and so we must select from the following sets of framebuffer drivers: 1. Generic drivers using firmware or standard registers (FB_OF, FB_VGA16, ...) 2. Specific drivers without support for GPU acceleration (FB_INTEL, FB_NVIDIA, FB_RADEON, ...) 3. Specific drivers with KMS and GEM/TTM (DRM_I915, DRM_NOUVEAU, DRM_RADEON) The type 1 drivers generally allow switching to a different driver for the same hardware. But once we have loaded a type 2 or 3 driver there is no way to switch without rebooting. Previously we built-in several type 2 drivers, which meant KMS was not possible. However, current X drivers for Intel, Nvidia and AMD/ATI hardware require KMS and GEM/TTM so we cannot continue to do this. We need to load type 3 drivers, but they are so large that we don't want to make them built-in. Also, the AMD/ATI Radeon driver requests firmware for 3D acceleration, which is not available at the time built-in drivers are initialised. Therefore, I'm trying to build-in type 1 drivers that cover all PowerPC hardware. Apparently that doesn't work. Do you see any messages from the kernel, or just a blank screen? Sorry I didn't mention it in my previous message but it seems that your suspicions are correct: The boot messages start to appear until the last to lines that mention FB and tty1 (i am not close to my box right now but they have very similar structure to the ones that appear when I successfully boot 2.6.37-trunk-powerpc). What happens next is complete silence for about two or tree minutes and then the machine reboots for itself. cheers, Ben. -- Ben Hutchings Once a job is fouled up, anything done to improve it makes it worse. -- “Estes aprazíveis pensamentos tornam de tal modo leve o meu trabalho que nunca estou tão ocioso como quando a ele me dedico. Bug#613790: 2nd update (Re: Bug#613790: pm-utils: eeepc 1005 PE recently stopped resuming from hibernate)
Hello, I've tried a self-compiled Debian 2.6.32-30 kernel without kprobes, as suggested in bug #611551, but it didn't work for me, after hibernation, my eeepc (1002HA) didn't resume, but returned to Grub menu after few seconds. I've then tried a self-compiled Debian 2.6.32-30 with the 3 drm-i915 related patches reverted : drm-i915-free-hardware-status-page-on-unload-when-physically-mapped.patch.bz2 drm-i915-overlay-ensure-that-the-reg_bo-is-in-the-gtt-prior-to-writing.patch.bz2 drm-i915-sdvo-always-add-a-30ms-delay-to-make-sdvo-tv-detection-reliable.patch.bz2 But I had the same result, the hibernation is still broken :-( At now, I've returned to 2.6.32-29 which is OK. I've tried one time to do a git-bisect to find a bug, but I don't know if it's usable with a Debian-patched kernel ? Bug#614221: 2.6.37-1-powerpc does not but on iMac G3
Package: linux-2.6 Severity: normal I'm experiencing the same problem in my iBook G4 with an ATI Radeon Mobility 9200. After running the bootloader (tried both Yaboot and GRUB2, single or multiuser), some text messages appear and the screen is clared a couple of times. The following text is printed in white over black lines on a white screen: setup_arch: bootmem arch: exit Two more empty black lines and the system gets stuck in there, rebooting itself after a couple of minutes. In a normal boot (Squeeze/Sid 2.6.32), the screen used to be cleared black and the penguin logo appeared. With 2.6.37 it does't reach this point. Thanks -- System Information: Debian Release: wheezy/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (200, 'experimental') Architecture: powerpc (ppc) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-powerpc Locale: LANG=ca_ES.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=ca_ES.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#614515: linux-image-2.6.37-1-amd64: Random kernel crash when waking up from suspend to RAM
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.37-1 Severity: normal Tags: sid Since I upgraded to the SID version of 2.6.37 kernel image, I experienced randomly crashes when waking up from suspend to RAM. This crash occurs in the gpu module (i915). The screen indeed light up to a black screen, with just a white cursor _ on the top left of the screen, and nothing other than hard reboot can be done. The system manage to write the crash report in log (attached at the end). This problem doesn't seem to occur with the last image from experimental (linux-image-2.6.37-trunk-amd64 version 2.6.37-1). I may just have been lucky with the experimental kernel, as there seems to be only few difference between experimental and SID kernel (the only difference that may be related to the problem is that the SID version do not activate ACPI_PROCFS), but I switched back to experimental kernel and did not experience any freeze until now. Just tell me if you need more informations.
