Seems as if the x-server does not really crash but ends in black. Computer is accessible by SSH and x-forwarding works! Same happens on another notebook (identical in construction) and another with this graphic chip after restarting after a successful new installation using the net-iso-image. Using a older DVD-ISO without network connection for install results in a working system - updating this to 6.0.1 kills it in the same way. Its likely its related to a known bug with the intel-drivers other distributions had some times ago based on x-server-org incompatibility and new kernel setting. Re: Bug#619711: console-setup: breaks copying keymap to initramfs
reassign 619711 initramfs-tools thanks On Sat, Mar 26, 2011 at 12:49:24PM +0100, Mario 'BitKoenig' Holbe wrote: if a system's keymap needs to be loaded during the initramfs stage, initramfs-tools' /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/keymap looks for /etc/console-setup/cached.kmap.gz and copies it to the initramfs. I had no idea that initramfs-tools does this. I think this was wrong even with old version of console-setup because in some situations cached.kmap.gz will not correspond to the actual configuration and in some versions of the package it was even possible for this file not to exist. console-setup 1.71 changed the name of this file to /etc/console-setup/cached_${CHARMAP}_$backspace$VARIANT.kmap.gz i.e. something like /etc/console-setup/cached_ISO-8859-15_del.kmap.gz The new version of console-setup tries to guess good values for several configuration options if values are not provided in its configuration files. Because of this, it is possible (when the system environment changes - locale and/or terminal settings) that a new keymap will be required even when the user has not changed anything in the configuration files of console-setup. Hence, it would be impossible for console-setup to tell whether cached.kmap.gz can be used or the keymap has to be regenerated. There are several alternatives to fix this bug like * symlinking the new name to the old * moving the keymap-copying from initramfs-tools to console-setup * updating initramfs-tools to honor the new keymap name It will be difficult for initramfs-tools to tell what is the correct name of the cached keymap. Symlinking the new name to the old is unreliable so I'd prefer not to implement this. Because of this in version 1.72 of console-setup a new option of setupcon is implemented --save-keyboard. Suppose you want to save the keymap in /tmp/initrd/etc/console-setup/cached.kmap.gz. Then simply use the following command: setupcon --save-keyboard /tmp/initrd/etc/console-setup/cached.kmap.gz Alternatively, instead of --save-keyboard you can use --setup-dir. I will explain this second option in a separate bug report. Both new options of setupcon are for now undocumented because I want to know first that they will be useful. Bug#620041: About the new option --setup-dir of setupcon
In the new version of console-setup (1.72) setupcon has a new option --setup-dir (for now it is undocumented). If you want to configure the console (both the font, the encoding and the keyboard) during the initrd phase, this can be achieved easily in the following way. Suppose /tmp/initrd/ has the files of the future initrd image. Then run the following command: setupcon --setup-dir /tmp/initrd This will create an extremely simple script /tmp/initrd/bin/setupcon that you can use in order to configure the console. Additionaly, in /tmp/initrd/etc/console-setup/ the files required for the configuration will be copied. Notice that among these files, there will be device files for tty1-tty6. The configuration script of Ubuntu for the console uses mknod to create such device files. The current method of console-setup is simpler to implement (because the code is shared between Linux and kFreeBSD), it will not be, however, difficult to change initrd/bin/setupcon to use mknod and to remove the device files from the initrd image. Please tell, if you want this change. Lastly, setupcon will create a file /tmp/initrd/morefiles. This file doesn't have to be included in the initrd image. Instead it lists the utilities that must be included in the initrd image. Depending on whether kbd or console-tools is installed this will be /bin/kbd_mode /bin/setfont /usr/bin/loadkeys (notice that this is a symlink to /bin/loadkeys) or /usr/bin/kbd_mode /usr/bin/consolechars /bin/loadkeys One advantage of the early console configuration is that there will be no need to change the font during the execution of the boot scripts, the screen will not flicker and the full history will be preserved on the console. In order achieve this the boot scripts of console-setup have to know that the console has been already configured by initrd. Please, advice how this can be achieved. I suppose the following is one possible method: 1. initrd creates an empty file /tmp/console-is-configured 2. the boot scripts of console-setup do not configure the console if they see such a file. 3. They, however, remove this file (so these scripts can be used normally after the system boots and /tmp is not poluted with unnecessary file). When I boot the HURD without passing -no-kvm-irqchip on the command line, the system usually will print hd2: irq timeout: status=0x50 hd2: irq timeout: status=0x50 hd2: irq timeout: status=0x50 hd2: unexpected_intr: status=0x58 [and so on] at boot time and not get past that. If lucky, the system boots up but still hangs (not responding to keyboard input) at seemingly random moments. Based on a hint from guillem, I tried passing -no-kvm-irqchip on the kvm command line. And now it works great! Known problem? Ideas for tracking it down? Jonathan $ : host $ uname -a Linux elie 2.6.38-rc3+ #2 SMP PREEMPT Thu Feb 3 17:51:50 CST 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux $ (cd ~/src/linux-2.6 git rev-parse --short HEAD) 831d52b $ dpkg-query -W qemu-kvm vde2 libaio1 libvdeplug2 iproute \ bridge-utils etherboot-qemu qemu-utils bridge-utils 1.4-5 etherboot-qemu 5.4.4-9 iproute20100519-3 libaio10.3.107-7 libvdeplug22.2.3-3 qemu-kvm 0.13.0+dfsg-2 qemu-utils 0.13.0+dfsg-2 vde2 2.2.3-3 [1] I was installing the hurd using a Debian installation CD-ROM (see http://www.debian.org/ports/hurd/hurd-cd) like so: wget http://people.debian.org/~sthibault/hurd-i386/installer/cdimage/mini.iso qemu-img create hurd-install.qemu 3G kvm -m 512 -net nic,model=ne2k_pci -net user \ -hda hurd-install.qemu -cdrom mini.iso -boot d Puzzlingly, the result would hang (and not respond to keyboard input) at seemingly random moments. Sometimes right after Enabling FXSR during bootup, sometimes after the text auth was printed, sometimes later. When it hangs, it is fairly easy to nudge it back into working again: 1. Hit ctrl-alt-2 to get a console. 2. Run info registers I doubt the details matter --- it is just that some nudging got it working again. By doing so and occasionally rebooting, I eventually got a working installation. Even after that, though, I was not able to boot hurd, instead receiving the message described above. processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 16 model : 6 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) II P360 Dual-Core Processor stepping: 3 cpu MHz : 800.000 cache size : 512 KB physical id : 0 siblings: 2 core id : 0 cpu cores : 2 apicid : 0 initial apicid : 0 fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 5 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt pdpe1gb rdtscp lm 3dnowext 3dnow constant_tsc rep_good nopl nonstop_tsc extd_apicid pni monitor cx16 popcnt lahf_lm cmp_legacy svm extapic cr8_legacy abm sse4a 3dnowprefetch osvw ibs skinit wdt nodeid_msr npt lbrv svm_lock nrip_save bogomips: 4588.54 TLB size: 1024 4K pages clflush size: 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 48 bits physical, 48 bits virtual power management: ts ttp tm stc 100mhzsteps hwpstate processor : 1 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 16 model : 6 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) II P360 Dual-Core Processor stepping: 3 cpu MHz : 800.000 cache size : 512 KB physical id : 0 siblings: 2 core id : 1 cpu cores : 2 apicid : 1 initial apicid : 1 fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 5 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt pdpe1gb rdtscp lm 3dnowext 3dnow constant_tsc rep_good nopl nonstop_tsc extd_apicid pni monitor cx16 popcnt lahf_lm cmp_legacy svm extapic cr8_legacy abm sse4a 3dnowprefetch osvw ibs skinit wdt nodeid_msr npt lbrv svm_lock nrip_save bogomips: 4588.54 TLB size: 1024 4K pages clflush size: 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 48 bits physical, 48 bits

Under 2.6.32 this worked smoothly with rt2870sta. On upgrading to 2.6.38, I ran into two problems: 1) it is not automatically detected; I had to explicitly load rt2800usb. 2) ping latency is around 600ms. I see that the ralink staging drivers were disabled a few revisions back - perhaps they could be re-enabled since they work better? == Under 2.6.32 == richard@violeer:~$ uname -a Linux violeer 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Wed Jan 12 04:01:41 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux richard@violeer:~$ iwconfig lono wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. wlan0 Ralink STA ESSID:wlan.anjou.terraraq.org.uk Nickname:RT2870STA Mode:Managed Frequency=2.442 GHz Access Point: 00:0F:CB:A0:0C:70 Bit Rate=54 Mb/s RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Link Quality=100/100 Signal level:-45 dBm Noise level:-83 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 richard@sfere:~$ ping -qc10 violeer PING violeer.wlan.anjou.terraraq.org.uk (172.31.59.138) 56(84) bytes of data. --- violeer.wlan.anjou.terraraq.org.uk ping statistics --- 10 packets transmitted, 10 received, 0% packet loss, time 9013ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.973/1.094/1.490/0.141 ms == Under 2.6.38 == richard@violeer:~$ uname -a Linux violeer 2.6.38-1-686 #1 SMP Wed Mar 16 17:37:47 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux richard@violeer:~$ iwconfig lono wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:wlan.anjou.terraraq.org.uk Mode:Managed Frequency:2.442 GHz Access Point: 00:0F:CB:A0:0C:70 Bit Rate=18 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:on Link Quality=67/70 Signal level=-43 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:2 Invalid misc:6 Missed beacon:0 richard@sfere:~$ ping -qc10 violeer PING violeer.wlan.anjou.terraraq.org.uk (172.31.59.138) 56(84) bytes of data. --- violeer.wlan.anjou.terraraq.org.uk ping statistics --- 10 packets transmitted, 10 received, 0% packet loss, time 9006ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 509.111/603.472/630.232/47.090 ms == lsusb output == Bus 001 Device 002: ID 148f:2070 Ralink Technology, Corp. This will allow people like me with a Broadcom BCM4322 (14e4:4322 and 14e4:432b) to use the in-kernel b43 driver instead of the proprietary wl driver. I tested it and it works very well, with two caveats: - the rate seems to be limited to 11M at present - I had to patch b43-fwcutter to be able to extract the necessary firmware Nevertheless, it seems to work better in a lot of ways, so it would be nice to have the option. Please increase CONFIG_NR_CPUS on sparc to 256 to accomodate these cases. I've verified that this change leads to a tiny increase in the size of the compressed image (less than 1KB). Unfortunately, bumping this number breaks the ABI, so it's most likely not going to be suitable for the squeeze point release, but at least we'll get it into testing and unstable kernels. Bug#620072: /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server uses unsupported /dev/tcp bashism
Package: nfs-kernel-server Version: 1:1.2.2-5 I casually tried to set up an NFS server, just to see if I can get it working. I installed nfs-kernel-server via aptitude, edited /etc/exports, and finally tried to start the NFS server daemon. This is the output of the startup command (slightly edited for privacy): foobar:/etc# /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server start Exporting directories for NFS kernel daemon...exportfs: /etc/exports [1]: Neither 'subtree_check' or 'no_subtree_check' specified for export foobar. Assuming default behaviour ('no_subtree_check'). NOTE: this default has changed since nfs-utils version 1.0.x . Starting NFS kernel daemon: nfsd Not starting: portmap daemon is not running (warning). OK, I then check about portmap: foobar:/etc# ps aux | grep [p]ortmap daemon 19692 0.0 0.1 1796 548 ?Ss 19:39 0:00 /sbin/portmap Seems to be running. I then have a look at /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server: [...] # See if portmap or rpcbind are running (cat /dev/null /dev/tcp/localhost/111) 2/dev/null RET=$? if [ $RET != 0 ]; then echo log_warning_msg Not starting: portmap daemon is not running exit 0 fi [...] What is this /dev/tcp/localhost/111? After some googling I find that this is a bashism, but the init-script is marked as a bash script at the top: !/bin/bash I then consult man bash and find the following line: NOTE: Bash, as packaged for Debian, does not support using the /dev/tcp and /dev/udp files. If my analysis is correct, please modify /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server so that it checks for portmap presence in a portable (or Debian) way. Bug#620072: Upgrading bash package solves the problem
Hi all I was able to solve my problem by upgrading the bash package from bash 3.2-4 to 4.1-3. The note I posted in the bug report is now gone from bash's man page, apparently with Bash 4 /dev/tcp is now supported on Debian. /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server works like a charm and I already have my first NFS export up and running. Please accept my apologies for submitting this bogus bug report and causing any unnecessary work.
