I have been facing this weird problem of the touchpad hanging up. I had to
modprobe psmouse to set it right. At this point of writing the report am using
gysnaptics through this
http://wiki.debian.org/SynapticsTouchpad#Debian_squeeze.2C_kernel_2.6.32-4_and_later.2C_Xorg_7.5
 .
The touchpad was working perfectly fine since I installed squeeze onto my
laptop, which was in Feb 2011. I had not installed gysnaptics till date. When
I peeked into dmesg, I saw the error message of psmouse.c bad data from KBD
bad parity .

  Hi kernel maintainers

  supported
in wheezy. This is fully true and I do not object to the close of the
  reports.

What I would like to bring up for discussion is what would be required from
the openvz project to get back the support for openvz in the Debian kernel
again for the next stable release.
 [...]

As a necessary (but not sufficient) condition, you and the OpenVZ
project would have to support OpenVZ in the *current* Debian stable
release. The last release based on 2.6.32.y was made in March. For
our OpenVZ kernel configurations we had to revert all the scheduler
fixes made in 2.6.32.29 due to conflicts which we obviously do not
have the necessary knowledge to resolve.

I must have missed that. I try to follow debian-kernel but I do not read
all the emails. Yes this would be a necessary condition. I fully agree
with that. I'll discuss this with the openvz project.

It seems to me that the OpenVZ project does not support longterm
releases other than RHEL. That's fine by me, just so long as no-one
 pretends otherwise.

I'll check that with the openvz project, to see if they can make this
promise.

And all the above was previously discussed in
 http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.kernel/71880/focus=71908.

Thanks for the reminder. :-)

Best regards,

Bug#647400: linux-image-3.0.0-1-686-pae: Alcor Flash Card Reader / Writer recognized, but SD cards are not detected

2011-11-02 Thread Frederic MASSOT
Package: linux-2.6

Hi,

I installed a internal multi-card reader Alcor Flash Card Reader / Writer on

When I plug an SD card, the green LED of the card reader lights up, but nothing
appears in the logs.
The insertion of the card is not detected by Linux, the cards are not available.

I tested the same card reader with Windows, and cards are read

I also have an external card reader that plugs into a USB port. Linux detects
the card and can read them.

This card reader also has a USB port, when I plug a USB key is recognized,
mounted and accessible.

Regards.

- this only seems to happen when there is a partition on the LUN, using LVM on
the
DM device directly doesn't seem to trigger that bug
- you'll have to fix the vserver patch when the two dm patches are applied
(not the issue here, but wanted to mention it before you fall about it)

Package: linux-2.6
Version: 3.0.0-3
Severity: normal

Hi,

I installed a internal multi-card reader Alcor Flash Card Reader / Writer on
my computer, it is recognized, the icons of readers appear in Nautius.

Regards.

The system is a file server, sharing a 4,5TB ext4 partition via NFS. Is was
installer a couple weeks ago (and was very stable), but it panic-ed twice
since it became
a file server last week.

Coincidence or not, both hangs ocurred on days of low usage (a holiday and a
weekend).

Bug#647436: Failure to boot on plain /dev/sdaN unless scsi_mod.scan=sync or rootdelay=60

2011-11-02 Thread Octavio Alvarez
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.99
Severity: critical

Hi. On a freshly-installed squeeze, and then upgraded to wheezy, upgrading to
kernel 3.0.0-1 (amd64) makes the server fail to boot.

I set to critical because it matches the breaks the whole system criteria on
reportbug. The server was running lenny and squeeze perfectly.

This is what appears on screen:
 transcription
[0.376354] pci_root PNP0A08:00: address space collision: host bridge window
[mem 0x000c8000-0x800d] conflicts with Video ROM [mem 0x000c-0x000cafff]
Loading, please wait...
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/b5b45032-88a2-49d9-a598-1e53d3aed2ab does not exist.
Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox [blah blah].
Enter 'help' for [blah blah]..

/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off

-

Partition is plain /dev/sda6. No LVM.

Following the suggestion of BTS #616689 (thanks babilen!) I added
scsi_mod.scan=sync and removed rootdelay=60 and the server rebooted correctly.

Bug#647249: linux-image-3.0.0-2-amd64: Dell Inspiron Mini 1018 is no longer able to enable wireless

2011-11-02 Thread Fernando C. Estrada
tags 647249 - moreinfo
thanks

Hi Ben,

On Wed, Nov 02, 2011 at 04:39:35AM +, Ben Hutchings wrote:
What do you get if you run 'rfkill unblock; rfkill list'?

Doesn't work (see below about the screencast), the output is the same:

0: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: yes
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes

But that problem was supposed to be solved by the dell-laptop module.
Your system already has that loaded.

I think so (dell_laptop), sorry for the bad reference.

~$ lsmod | grep dell
dell_laptop12943 0
rfkill 19080 5 bluetooth,cfg80211,dell_laptop
dcdbas 13256 1 dell_laptop
power_supply 13475 3 dell_laptop,ac,battery

What do you mean by 'reset'? Does the disabled state persist after a
 reboot?

Yes, reboot the computer doesn't work, the only way to fix it yet is login
at BIOS and reset to default settings (in the BIOS of this model the F9
key means reset to default settings), strange here is that wireless wasn't
been disabled before or after reset to default settings.

I guess a screencast [1] of this issue will be helpful.

[1] http://fcestrada.com/screencasts/647249.webm

In the attached file you'll find the output text of the screencast (with
some fixes about redirection of messages to stderr).

Thanks a lot for your help!

Best Regards,

P.S. I guess this is an upstream problem based on the following links:

Hi,

While performing stress testing on a KVM instance with IPv6, we noticed very
poor performance on IPv6 TCP connections, which basically came down to the bug
fixed by upstream commit 8e1e8a4779cb23c1d9f51e9223795e07ec54d77a[1]. Both, the
host and the guest were running 2.6.32-5-amd64 2.6.32-31 and the host featured
Intel NICs, using e1000e and igb. SSH sessions to the guest from outside would
effectively stall when large output was generated (e.g. ls -lR /) and
the problem would disappear when disabling virtio_net's gso (modprobe
virtio_net gso=0) or disabling the host's TSO using ethtool.

Furthermore, while trying to reproduce the behaviour on another system, we
triggered the bug fixed by commit 0aa68271510ae2b221d4b60892103837be63afe4[2],
i.e. a routed (not bridged) KVM instance using virtio-net would not get its GSO
IPv6 packets forwarded to the network, with the same poor performance as above.

After backporting and applying both patches to squeeze's version, IPv6
performance was restored to the same levels as IPv4 in both cases. You
can find the backported versions of the patches attached.

Thanks,
Apollon

Subject: [PATCH 1/2] net: Fix IPv6 GSO type checks in Intel ethernet drivers

Found this problem when testing IPv6 from a KVM guest to a remote
host via e1000e device on the host.
The following patch fixes the check for IPv6 GSO packet in Intel
ethernet drivers to use skb_is_gso_v6(). SKB_GSO_DODGY is also set
when packets are forwarded from a guest.

Severity: normal

Hi,
when using this kernel or linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 as a PV guest on Xen 4.1.1
the console is broken after suspend/resume or migration.

Steps to reproduce:

xm save squeeze squeeze.img
xm restore squeeze.img
xm console squeeze

The console won't accept any keyboard input but will still print kernel
messages. The machine is also still pingable. Ssh login still works but there
also
no input possible after login.

The problem doesn't show up with 2.6.32-35 so this is a regression.
Cheers,
 -- Guido
