Bug#648155: nfs-common: nfs mount hangs when kerberos ticket expires. Squeeze used to renew.

2011-11-09 Thread John Hughes
Package: nfs-common

Version: 1:1.2.5-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

We use krb5 nfs4 for mounting our home directories.

On squeeze this worked well.

On a sid/wheezy system the nfs4 mount hangs when the kerberos ticket expires
(but is still renewable).

In the syslog on the client we see:

2011-11-09 Thread Philip Ashmore
Package: linux-2.6

Dear Maintainer,

# vserver wheezy64 build -m debootstrap --interface wlan0:192.168.10.103/24 --

It succeeded but when I tried to start it,
# vserver wheezy64 start
I get EOF

I wonder what you need this for -- it shouldn't be necessary and the way
rfkill_init_sw_state() works might cause unexpected behaviour. I
recommend leaving that out, if you do leave it out rfkill will set the
desired state of the device as soon as the device is registered.

looking at the the output of the kernel ring buffer (dmesg) I see the following.

The bug sounds like it comes from the openvirtuozzo patch.

Which is not available in this package.

Are you sure?
The patch contains this hunk in the ChangeLog:

What is the last version that worked on this system?

Not sure. Right now it keeps hanging randomly after several minutes. May
also be a hardware issue. I'll try to build some other kernel versions
elsewhere. memtest86+ worked fine for quite some time.

Bug#648155: linux-image-3.xx nfs4 mount hangs when kerberos ticket expires. Squeeze used give EPERM

2011-11-09 Thread John Hughes

This is a kernel bug not a nfs-common bug.

Using the squeeze kernel (2.6.32-5) in place of the current unstable
kernel what happens is that attempts to access the nfs4 mounted system
get an EPERM instead of hanging and no horrid messages are written to
the log.

Bug#648191: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: latest squeeze kernel doesn't boot on Dell Optiplex GX270 if hyperthreading enabled

2011-11-09 Thread John Hughes
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-38
Severity: normal

Previous versions of this package, for example 2.6.32-31, had no problem
booting on this hardware.

Version 2.6.32-38 spontaneously reboots during the boot process unless
hyperthreading is disabled. (Says something about activating 2nd CPU.
I'll try and get a serial console hooked up tomorrow to get the exact
message).

Bug#648155: Acknowledgement (nfs-common: nfs mount hangs when kerberos ticket expires. Squeeze used to renew.)

2011-11-09 Thread John Hughes

This seems to be Ubuntu bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/794112

There it is suggested that updating nfs-utils could fix the problem. I
don't see how, and anyway, is there a more recent version than what's in
sid?

Bug#648155: linux-image-3.xx nfs4 mount hangs when kerberos ticket expires. Squeeze used give EPERM

2011-11-09 Thread Daniel Kahn Gillmor
On 11/09/2011 08:44 AM, John Hughes wrote:
This is a kernel bug not a nfs-common bug.

Using the squeeze kernel (2.6.32-5) in place of the current unstable
kernel what happens is that attempts to access the nfs4 mounted system
get an EPERM instead of hanging and no horrid messages are written to
 the log.

I can confirm that i'm seeing this bug in 2.6.39 (from backports.org) as
well. It's particularly bad because if two users are connected to the
kerberized mount, and the ticket of one of them expires, access for
*both* users ends up hanging this way.

Interesting that it's not present in 2.6.32; i haven't been able to test
that because 2.6.32 doesn't support any modern encryption types for
krb5, and the domain i'm administering is restricted to modern
encryption types.

I'd be happy to set up test systems to debug this, including trying
kernel patches if anyone can suggest something worth trying.

Bug#648207: Please add support for newest Dell touchpad

2011-11-09 Thread Laurent Bigonville
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 3.0.0-6
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I own a Dell Latitude E6510 and unfortunately, the touchpad is not
recognized properly, causing the vertical scrolling to not work.

A series of patches that fix this issue has hit the linux-next branch,
could you please apply them to the debian kernel.

2011-11-09 Thread Eugen Sarychev
After about two days of testing I can say, there is probably no bug in the 3.1
kernel. Now I'm testing the 2.6 with blacklisted ohci_hcd module.

gregon@et:~$ lsmod | grep hcd
ehci_hcd               32081  0
usbcore               122674  2 ehci_hcd
Any suggestions, what could be the next step, if this module is the root of all
problems?

It would tell us who to contact for help.

Unfortunately nothing not already applied jumps out at me in git
log v2.6.32..v3.1 -- drivers/usb. So for tracking down the cause,
the simplest next step would be to try a few versions between 2.6.32
and 3.1 (maybe starting with 2.6.37 and bisecting from there; see [1])
to narrow down what fixed it.

By the way (just noticed in passing): kernel maintainers, does
v2.6.37-rc4~62^2~3 (USB: EHCI: AMD periodic frame list table quirk,
2010-11-08) look like a good candidate for backporting to stable? I
can't see why v2.6.32.y would not be affected by it.

Thanks much,
Jonathan

I can't tell from your attached png because not enough of the oops is
included.

It looks like that screenshot is from a virtual machine emulated VGA
console.

To catch future issues like this, I recommend running virtual machines
with a virtual serial console so that their kernel's textmode output can
be cleanly recorded and transmitted in full.

Bug#647095: CPU hyperthreading turned on after soft power-cycle

2011-11-09 Thread Jonathan Nieder
Hi Jiri,

Jiri Polach wrote:

On Ben's advice I am trying to locate the commit that causes the problem to
appear more precisely using 'git bisect'. However, too many of generated
revisions are unbootable so I have to use 'bisect skip' frequently.

Ok, so I've looked over the log at http://bugs.debian.org/647095, and
this seems totally weird. Have I described the symptoms correctly below?
(Warning: I am making some guesses, especially at step 5. In case of
doubt, see the bug log just mentioned.)

1. Disable SMT in the BIOS.

2. Boot a bad kernel. /proc/cpuinfo (correctly) shows one entry
   per core.

3. shutdown -h now. Enter BIOS. SMT is still disabled.
   Don't save.

4. Boot any kernel. /proc/cpuinfo shows two entries per core.

5. shutdown -h now. Boot any kernel. /proc/cpuinfo still shows
   two entries per core.

6. shutdown -h now. Enter BIOS. SMT is still disabled. Save.
Now /proc/cpuinfo will (correctly) shows one entry per core.

Reproducible for Jiri with v3.0.4.

Result of bisecting: v2.6.38-rc1 exhibits the problem. v2.6.37 and
many of the topic branches merged in the 2.6.38 merge window work ok.
Some other topic branches do not boot at all.

Jiri: if you have gitk installed, then git bisect visualize can help
get a sense of what's in the middle of the regression range.
gitk --bisect --first-parent v2.6.37..v2.6.38-rc1 might be a good way
to find mainline commits to test before finding a topic branch to delve
into.

x86 people: do the symptoms seem familiar? Any hints for tracking it
down?

Thanks and hope that helps,
Jonathan
