2.6.32-5-amd64 processes stalling

2012-06-28 Thread David Brodrick

Hi,
I have encountered a likely bug which I cannot find any exact duplicates
of, but I thought I could mention it to you before submitting a bug
report, to see what you think.

I've had problems under 2.6.32-5-amd64 on both a HP Proliant DL120 G7 and
a Supermicro X9SCL-F. The Supermicro box runs a Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU
E3-1270 V2 @ 3.50GHz.

The problem is that processes on the machine stall for a few seconds to a
few minutes for no obvious reason. The stalls can include lightweight
processes such as vim or alpine, sometimes when writing a file, sometimes
just editing text (I've had four stalls already this far into the email).
I run sync from cron periodically and dmesg shows the occasional complaint
about it hanging:

INFO: task sync:32577 blocked for more than 120 seconds
.. trace ..

Other sessions continue to respond while this is happening. I read in
other bug reports to run echo w > /proc/sysrq-trigger which I have done,
the output is here:

http://ozforecast.com.au/temp/dmesg.txt

The first sysrq trace is just testing, the second was while a process
(this alpine instance) was stalled.

I retired the HP machine because I assumed this problem was caused by
hardware problems. I didn't notice the problem on the Supermicro as a
fresh install, but now that I have all my software on here it is also
playing up. The machine is not particularly loaded (load averages about
1.5). Some of my software downloads a few dozen small gif files per
minute and runs imagemagick on them, so there is a little IO but it is
pretty trivial really. There is plenty of contiguous space left on the
disk:

FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 1.8T 98G 1.6T 6% /

Any thoughts on where I should go from here?

Sincere thanks,
  Dave

Bug#679449: shared memory problem on armel

2012-06-28 Thread Ben Hutchings
I've marked this wontfix, as it's a limitation of the ARM architecture.
Mapping the same shared memory twice in one process is stupid, anyway.
Just disable the test on armel and armhf.

Ben.

Bug#655385: [squeeze openvz] "Cannot allocate memory" when doing "cat /proc/self/mountinfo" inside a vm

2012-06-28 Thread Ola Lundqvist
Hi Jonathan

Thanks. Yes, but in this case the advice is to use the available
.rpm packages and alienize those to .deb.

Yes, that would be interesting. Here's how to do it:

cp /boot/config-3.2.0-3-amd64 .config
make deb-pkg; # maybe with -j4

Bug#674243: [3.0.0-1 -> wheezy regression] SNB: Kernel crash when closing the lid

2012-06-28 Thread Sylvain Archenault
I also tried the new kernel that was uploaded in sid yesterday, 3.2.0-3
(3.2.21-2), and it crashes as well.

I don't know what differences there could be between this one and the
one I built from git. Maybe I should try to rebuilt the exact version
Debian is shipping? I'm not sure how to do that though.

dpkg -i ../; # as root

Kernel built from this is working.

Ok, good. Please attach your .config for comparison with Debian's.

The only two kernel that crash are

linux-image-3.4-trunk-amd64 Version: 3.4.1-1~experimental.1
linux-image-3.2.0-2-amd64 Version: 3.2.20-1

3.2.21-2 doesn't crash?

So you're asking for extra kernel modules to work around a libvirt
deficiency, not even a missing feature in qemu?

I think this is ridiculous.

Thanks. Let's recycle this bug to track that.

Do you remember when the NULL pointer dereference went away? (E.g.,
does the 2.6.32.y kernel from squeeze reproduce it? A squeeze kernel
should work fine on a wheezy/sid system.)

nothing seems to have change since 2010: I don’t see a
NULL-pointer-dereference, but when both touchpad and trackpoint are
enabled, the pointer sometimes gets stuck for a short while while dmesg
tells me:

[ 55.444165] psmouse serio1: TouchPad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at

I can prevent the problem by disabling the touchpad in the BIOS. This is
on 3.2.0-2.

Thanks for checking. I assume by 'experimental' you mean 'sid'.

Can you reproduce this without the virtualbox drivers? If so,
please attach full "dmesg" output from reproducing the bug in such

Do you still have access to this hardware? If so, what kernel are you
using these days and how does it behave?

If 3.x.y kernels reproduce this, we should reopen it upstream. If they
don't, we can try to find what change fixed it and apply that to stable.

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

Alan Cox then closed the bug with resolution INSUFFICIENT_DATA
(I guess he was waiting on the 3.4.y log).

Since the BIOS setting is not easily discoverable, I do not consider
it an adequate workaround. Would you happen to have a fixed DSDT
available to test? The people at linux-a...@vger.kernel.org might be
able to help with that. Please cc either me or this bug log if
pursuing that so we can track it.

I'd also be interested in how the 3.4.y kernel from experimental
behaves. The only packages from outside squeeze that should be needed
for this test are the kernel itself, linux-base, and initramfs-tools.

Thanks for your help and patience,
Jonathan

Debian's squeeze kernel currently only has the five patches marked [1].

The patches marked [2] have been backported and tested but not applied
(waiting on advice from knowledgeable folks such as you :)).

If someone makes a backport of the patches marked [3] as well, would
you be able to look over or test the combination? That would be much
appreciated. If that's not possible, your advice would still be
welcome but we will need to use a more minimal set of changes.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Bug#678731: linux-2.6: Please build dummy_hcd and g_mass_storage modules

I do agree.

bertagaz and I have spent a bit more time testing and comparing the
available options. Our results are summed up there:
https://tails.boum.org/todo/automated_builds_and_tests/USB/

tl;dr --> as far as Wheezy is concerned:
  * qemu-kvm emulates just fine a USB 2.0 mass storage device, and
knows how to boot from it; personally, I'd rather use that than
a dedicated kernel module.
  * with qemu-kvm on the command-line: no need for an additional
kernel module
  * with a libvirt stack: a missing interface in some abstraction
layer makes it a pain to use the qemu-kvm USB emulation of
removable mass storage devices.

We are going to request the missing interface to upstream libvirt,
but it's unlikely the result thereof is ready in time for Wheezy.

So, with my Tails developer hat, we would be happy to use
g_mass_storage at least from now to the Wheezy+1 release.

> I don't know; would be interested to hear other people's opinions
> on this.

I'd be interested too!

Cc'ing the Debian Live mailing-list, as there may be folks there who
have experience on this topic.

Perhaps debian-boot and/or debian-installer should be added to the mix
as well, what do you think?

Hi.

Done.
http://bugzilla.intellinuxwireless.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2370

The problem is that I think it fails too using WEP encryption.
In the dmesg attached you can read:

[35089.612272] BUG: Bad rss-counter state mm:880133a4db80 idx:1 val:-2
[35089.612283] BUG: Bad rss-counter state mm:880133a4db80 idx:2 val:2

Thanks for your time

Bug#679436: add "drop_capabilities=..." support, like kinit

2012-06-28 Thread Kees Cook
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.106
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

This adds knowledge of the "drop_capabilities=..." option that kinit
supports. When set, it gets passed to run-init's new "-d" option.

This lets a system owner drop capabilities (like CAP_SYS_MODULE and
CAP_SYS_RAWIO) before the system init starts.

Thanks,

-Kees

Bug#679354:

2012-06-28 Thread Ignacio Vicario Esteban
Checked with kernel linux-image-3.2.0-3-amd64_3.2.21-2_amd64 taken from
experimental branch: the same behavior.

Bug#679391: Duplicate of Bug #637560

2012-06-28 Thread Aribert Biel
This is a duplicate of http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=19;bug=637560.

So it persists in kernel 3.2.x

Scrap that please, this is not the right way to apply the patches. The
following commands should actually work (assuming you're on sid and have
the latest 3.2 kernel installed):

sudo apt-get install linux-source-3.2
tar xf /usr/src/linux-source-3.2.tar.bz2
wget http://people.canonical.com/~mlankhorst/drm-abi-patches.tgz
cd linux-source-3.2
tar xf ../drm-abi-patches.tgz
for patch in patches/*; do patch -Np1 -i $patch;done
cp /boot/config-3.2.0-3-amd64 .config
make deb-pkg

Then there should be a linux-image-3.2.21-.deb in the parent
directory that you can install with dpkg. Michele, could you do that?

Cheers,
   Sven

Bug#679395: linux-source: cifs mount of a subfolder of a Windows 2003 Server share need access rights for the share itself

2012-06-28 Thread Aribert Biel
Package: linux-source
Version: linux-image-3.2.0-2-686-pae
Severity: important
Tags: upstream

With kernel 3.2.xx you will no longer be able to mount a subfolder of a
Windows 2003 Server share if you don't have access right to the share itself
(of course the user must have access rights to the subfolder).

This is also a problem when using some NAS Devices, which give a user only
access rights to a subfolder of a share.

The reason of this is known upstream (see the 8 th reply to
http://samba.2283325.n4.nabble.com/Trouble-with-mount-cifs-while-smbclient-
works-Ubuntu-12-04-tp4631671p4631800.html) but doesn't seem to be easily
fixable.

This renders debian in some cases unusable as Windows Client (mounting as
Domain administrator always works ;-)

Reverting back to kernel 2.6.xx fixes the problem!

Bug#679372: DOMU hangs on high load (dd)

2012-06-28 Thread Michael Grosseck

Package: linux-image-2.6.32-5-xen-amd64
Version: 2.6.32-45

Hello everybody,

I liked to clone a xen domu installed on a LVM. So I made a snapshot of the
appropriate volume, created a new volume and than I tried to copy the snapshot
with dd.

# dd if=/dev/vgvms/lamp-snap of=/dev/vgvms/lamp-new bs=1024k

But after a short while there was no response from the only existing domu
anymore. In the domu kern.log I got a lots of messages like:

Incomplete upload found in Debian upload queue

2012-06-28 Thread Debian FTP Masters
Probably you are the uploader of the following file(s) in
the Debian upload queue directory:
  linux_3.2.21-3.debian.tar.xz
  linux_3.2.21-3.dsc
This looks like an upload, but a .changes file is missing, so the job
cannot be processed.

If no .changes file arrives within 23:27:09, the files will be deleted.

If you didn't upload those files, please just ignore this message.

Greetings,

Your Debian queue daemon (running on host franck.debian.org)
