Bug#681161: [squeeze] General Protection Fault or Invalid Opcode in mm/slub.c:2969

Sure, doesn't look very interesting but this is what precedes "cut here" in /var/log/syslog: Jul 11 09:58:06 archibald wpa_supplicant[1290]: Failed to initiate AP scan. Currently running Memtest86+ v4.20 off a Clonezilla CD. It hasn't finished a pass but it's onto test #6 (30% through the pass) with no problems. > Have there been any other weird symptoms recently, or is this the > first time? There were some weird issues with Clonezilla. We tried to set up a basic Debian plus a few, then clone it so I could try a new version of Upstart, with ability to rapidly reset (this is a dedicated testbox). Weird stuff happened with the restore process, so I formatted and started over, fresh install. Subsequently backed it up again, haven't restored. There was a weird glitch on reboot after Clonezilla, but that's not unusual; cold boot worked. There was also an unusual screed on bootup once, but it disappeared before I took good note of it. If it happens again I'll try to track it down in syslog. Nothing seems noteworthy to me, but I'll let you be the judge. That's allocated with kzalloc earlier in the same function and the pointer is not modified after then, so this looks like memory corruption, due to bad memory, other misbehaving hardware, or a kernel bug. In the current configuration, does memtest86+ report the memory to be ok? Have there been any other weird symptoms recently, or is this the first time? Thanks again. Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.32-45 Severity: important Tags: squeeze The issue appears on the internet in a few places, including the Debian bug tracker, but I'm not sure how to add to the existing bug report, sorry! Bug #643741 appears to be similar to this. Bug can currently be repro'd reliably by typing 'sudo apt-get upgrade'. System beeps and a bit of information is dumped to all my gnome-terminal sessions; /var/log/syslog reports variously Invalid Opcode and General Protection Fault each time. Hm. "page allocation failure" usually means that (some particular kind of) memory has been exhausted, so a lot of different bugs could produce that same symptom. So I am worried about lumping all these cases together. > Attached are 2 dmesg logs from homer. Thanks. If I remember correctly, you set vm.min_free_kbytes = 65536 and the problems went away. The page http://www.acc.umu.se/~maswan/linux-netperf.txt you mentioned says: It might also be a good idea to increase vm/min_free_kbytes, especially if you have e1000 with NAPI or similar. A sensible value is 16M or 64M: vm/min_free_kbytes = 65536 However, you are using r8169 here, not e1000. Any leads towards finding the resource hog, source of fragmentation, or other cause would be welcome. We need to be setting the sysctl appropriately automatically. Btw., I had a short mail discussion with Jonathan, and he asked me to release source packages, too, in order to make it easier to trace and reproduce my steps. He also told my how to so and where to put what source package files in the repository, so I'll try to do so. It may take some time though. Bug#681089: firmware-linux-nonfree: Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5722 dropped packets
Package: firmware-linux-nonfree Version: 0.35~bpo60+1 Severity: normal With standard squeeze kernel seemingly once a day the nic stops working. Looking at the switch port it seems the nic is transmitting (or retransmitting) something as fast as possible. A simple ifdown/ifup seems to cure for rest of working day. The latest backport kernel 3.2.20-1~bpo60+1 and firmware-linux-nonfree_0.35~bpo60+1 the nic does seems to be stable. iperf reports 1gb performance. However the count of dropped packets is not zero. I have changed cables and switch ports. There is another other gigabit nic on the switch. This is a nVidia Corporation MCP77 and this has no errors or dropped packets. I also have tried the module 3.122n from Broadcom. The nic stops working after a few minutes with the switch port showing rapid transmission sympton as per 1st para. Interestingy the 3.122n module does not update the firmware files in /lib/firmware... $ cat /proc/version Linux version 3.2.0-0.bpo.2-amd64 (Debian 3.2.20-1~bpo60+1) (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 4.4.5 (Debian 4.4.5-8) ) #1 SMP Fri Jun 29 20:42:29 UTC 2012 lspci: 11:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5722 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express $ sudo ethtool eth0 Settings for eth0: Supported ports: [ TP ] Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full Supports auto-negotiation: Yes Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full 100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full 1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full Advertised pause frame use: Symmetric Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes Speed: 1000Mb/s Duplex: Full Port: Twisted Pair PHYAD: 1 Transceiver: internal Auto-negotiation: on MDI-X: Unknown Supports Wake-on: g Wake-on: g Current message level: 0x00ff (255) Link detected: yes $ sudo ethtool -k eth0 Offload parameters for eth0: rx-checksumming: on tx-checksumming: on scatter-gather: on tcp-segmentation-offload: on udp-fragmentation-offload: off generic-segmentation-offload: on generic-receive-offload: on large-receive-offload: off ntuple-filters: off receive-hashing: off $ sudo ethtool -i eth0 driver: tg3 version: 3.121 firmware-version: 5722-v3.07, ASFIPMI v6.02 bus-info: :11:00.0 eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:21:5a:d3:d0:0c inet addr:192.168.2.10 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::221:5aff:fed3:d00c/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:123154 errors:0 dropped:26 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:131936 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:15913111 (15.1 MiB) TX bytes:107913843 (102.9 MiB) Interrupt:19 $ sudo modinfo tg3 filename: /lib/modules/3.2.0-0.bpo.2-amd64/kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/broadcom/tg3.ko firmware: tigon/tg3_tso5.bin firmware: tigon/tg3_tso.bin firmware: tigon/tg3.bin version:3.121 license:GPL description:Broadcom Tigon3 ethernet driver author: David S. Then, you may try the gspca-2.15.18.tar.gz from my web site: wget http://moinejf.free.fr/gspca-2.15.18.tar.gz tar -zxf gspca-2.15.18.tar.gz cd gspca-2.15.18 make su make install reboot You may then try cheese. For skype, don't forget to force the use of the v4l library: export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype If the problem is still there, I'd be glad to get some traces. For that, as root, do: echo 0x1f > /sys/module/gspca_main/parameters/debug then, unplug/replug the webcam, do some capture until the problem occurs, and send us the last kernel messages starting from the webcam probe. The camera works again in Cheese, at least some of the time. Other times, launching Cheese immediately crashes GNOME, which restarts the X.org server. However, with Skype 4.0.0.7, it only shows a green square, instead of the camera's output. > 4. This produces a severely distorted image for a few seconds, then Cheese crashes; GNOME itself survives. Meanwhile, Skype 4.0.0.7 shows a black square, instead of the camera's output. Bug#681011: Removed package(s) from unstable
We believe that the bug you reported is now fixed; the following package(s) have been removed from unstable: linux-kbuild-2.6 |3.0.0-2 | source linux-kbuild-3.0.0 |3.0.0-2 | amd64, armel, armhf, i386, ia64, kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, s390x, sparc --- Reason --- ROM; renamed to linux-tools -- Note that the package(s) have simply been removed from the tag database and may (or may not) still be in the pool; this is not a bug. The package(s) will be physically removed automatically when no suite references them (and in the case of source, when no binary references it). Please also remember that the changes have been done on the master archive and will not propagate to any mirrors (ftp.debian.org included) until the next dinstall run at the earliest. Packages are usually not removed from testing by hand. Testing tracks unstable and will automatically remove packages which were removed from unstable when removing them from testing causes no dependency problems. The release team can force a removal from testing if it is really needed, please contact them if this should be the case. We try to close Bugs which have been reported against this package automatically. But please check all old bugs, if they where closed correctly or should have been re-assign to another package. Bug#571980: [SPAM] Re: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.33-2-amd64: impi oops on intel motherboard

If so, what kernel do you use, and how does it behave? Yes, it runs 3.2.0-2-amd64, it seems to behave like a champ. At least I didn't spot an IPMI-related Oops recently (but I don't reboot it that often). Xav Ours are sitting on a shelf, powered off. I can use one to test a specific kernel if wanted. Bug#677016: resume failure: kobject_add_internal failed for BAT0 with -EEXIST
On 10/07/12 05:31, Jonathan Nieder wrote: Eugen Dedu wrote: Making a git bissect inside these versions will take me ages, especially that the freeze is not easily reproducible and it is difficult during a test to be sure that the freeze does NOT appear. Fair enough. When's the last time it happened? Is the error always "kobject_add_internal failed for BAT0 with -EEXIST"? It appeared last time two weeks ago, when I was still using 3.3. Since then I have been using 3.4, and no problem so far. There were two errors: - "kobject_add_internal failed for BAT0 with -EEXIST" and no other message - the error with the recursivity, the acpi function and so on (the image I posted). But probably they are related, since BAT0 (battery 0) is surely to acpi. I tried searching the web for that message but you seem to be the only one getting it in this circumstance. :) Alas. If you can still reproduce it occasionally with some kernel, please report the symptoms to linux-a...@vger.kernel.org, cc-ing either me or this bug log so we can track it. Be sure to mention: - precise steps to reproduce, expected result, actual result, and how the difference indicates a bug (should be simple enough) - how reproducible it is - which kernels you have tested and what happened with each - full "dmesg" output from booting an affected kernel, as an attachment or link - acpidump output, as an attachment or link - any other weird symptoms or workarounds Hopefully someone there can suggest a way to figure out what is happening, for example by applying some patch or enabling some debugging feature to be ready for when it happens next. Thanks again for a clear report, and sorry I have no better advice. No problem for me, I am glad that it works on 3.4! So if you prefer, you can close this bug. -- Eugen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? On 10/07/12 05:33, Jonathan Nieder wrote: Eugen Dedu wrote: First, note that I have indeed a problem with the battery, since the icon of gnome is not working properly: it shows an empty battery, whice it is fully loaded, or viceversa. Is this more reproducible than the resume failures? This is 100% reproducible. For ex., right now I have 2 horizontal lines instead of 3, and my battery is 87% charged. Moreover, it is charging, but the icon does not show the "fire" (meaning it is charging). -- Eugen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
