Sure, doesn't look very interesting but this is what precedes "cut
here" in /var/log/syslog:

Jul 11 09:58:06 archibald wpa_supplicant[1290]: Failed to initiate AP scan.
Jul 11 09:59:06 archibald wpa_supplicant[1290]: Failed to initiate AP scan.

Jul 11 10:07:06 archibald wpa_supplicant[1290]: Failed to initiate AP scan.

I should probably look at disabling wifi on there as we don't use it.
The ten lines preceding "cut here" in dmesg show:

Currently running Memtest86+ v4.20 off a Clonezilla CD. It hasn't
finished a pass but it's onto test #6 (30% through the pass) with no
problems.

> Have there been any other weird symptoms recently, or is this the
> first time?

There were some weird issues with Clonezilla. We tried to set up a
basic Debian plus a few, then clone it so I could try a new version of
Upstart, with ability to rapidly reset (this is a dedicated testbox).
Weird stuff happened with the restore process, so I formatted and
started over, fresh install. Subsequently backed it up again, haven't
restored. There was a weird glitch on reboot after Clonezilla, but
that's not unusual; cold boot worked. There was also an unusual screed
on bootup once, but it disappeared before I took good note of it. If
it happens again I'll try to track it down in syslog.

Nothing seems noteworthy to me, but I'll let you be the judge.

This is presumably

kfree(sshdr);

in sr_media_change. That's allocated with kzalloc earlier in the same
function and the pointer is not modified after then, so this looks
like memory corruption, due to bad memory, other misbehaving hardware,
or a kernel bug.

In the current configuration, does memtest86+ report the memory to be
ok?

Have there been any other weird symptoms recently, or is this the
first time?

Thanks again.

What would be most useful is the first oops (it should say "not tainted")
starting a few lines before the "general protection fault" and ending a
few lines after the "end trace".

mm/slub.c:2969 is BUG_ON(!PageCompound(page)) in kfree(), indicating a
free of a bad pointer.

Thanks and hope that helps,
Jonathan

Bug#681161: linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64: General Protection Fault or Invalid Opcode in mm/slub.c:2969

2012-07-10 Thread Chris Angelico
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-45
Severity: important
Tags: squeeze

The issue appears on the internet in a few places, including the Debian bug
tracker, but I'm not sure how to add to the existing bug report, sorry! Bug
#643741 appears to be similar to this.

Bug can currently be repro'd reliably by typing 'sudo apt-get upgrade'. System
beeps and a bit of information is dumped to all my gnome-terminal sessions;
/var/log/syslog reports variously Invalid Opcode and General Protection Fault
each time. Full syslog available if of value.

Will take the system down for a reboot shortly, as suggested in syslog:
Jul 11 10:34:09 archibald kernel: [ 4720.459224] Fixing recursive fault but
reboot is needed!

Hope this is of value!

Ok, cloning since this part seems to still affect 3.4.y. If you get a
chance to contact upstream about it, I'd be interested.

I'd rather get it fixed in 3.2.y since we will be maintaining that for
a while. Would you be interested in pursuing that (by testing it and
contacting upstream and cc-ing us when it next happens)?

If not, that's fine and we probably should close it.

Thanks again.

--- Begin Message ---
Package: nfs-kernel-server
Version: 1:1.2.6-2
Severity: important

After upgrading nfs-kernel-server, it fails to start, complaining that there
are no exports.

  service nfs-kernel-server start
Not starting NFS kernel daemon: no exports. ... (warning).

I do not have any changes to /etc/exports, it is true, but do have exports
defined in /etc/exports.d/*.exports, and these are valid exports.

By commenting out the check for an empty /etc/exports (introduced to resolve
#673798) in /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server, nfsd starts and all is well again:

if [ -f /etc/exports ] # && grep -q '^[[:space:]]*[^#]*/' /etc/exports

This check should probably be either be reverted, or it should at least iterate
it through all the /etc/exports.d/*.exports files before deciding there are no
exports.

Thanks, both.

If either of you gets a chance to try the latest 2.6.32.y kernel from
squeeze (it should work fine on a squeeze or wheezy/sid system), then
that would be interesting.

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

Bug#495919: [lenny vserver] page allocation failure

I think the network driver itself is not related to the problem,
it's just that it wants RAM and can't get any.

It's always about transfering data at a high rate. I think it
happens when you're writing that data, and so the page cache also
fills up.

The machine I had this on, and now homer, only have 2 GB of RAM.
The disk might have a problem keeping up with what the other
end can send.

Bug#495919: [lenny vserver] page allocation failure

Hm. "page allocation failure" usually means that (some particular
kind of) memory has been exhausted, so a lot of different bugs could
produce that same symptom.

So I am worried about lumping all these cases together.

> Attached are 2 dmesg logs from homer.

Thanks. If I remember correctly, you set

vm.min_free_kbytes = 65536

and the problems went away.

The page http://www.acc.umu.se/~maswan/linux-netperf.txt you
mentioned says:

It might also be a good idea to increase vm/min_free_kbytes,
especially if you have e1000 with NAPI or similar. A sensible
value is 16M or 64M: vm/min_free_kbytes = 65536

However, you are using r8169 here, not e1000. Any leads towards
finding the resource hog, source of fragmentation, or other cause
would be welcome. We need to be setting the sysctl appropriately
automatically.

Hope that helps,
Jonathan

Btw., I had a short mail discussion with Jonathan, and he asked me to
release source packages, too, in order to make it easier to trace and
reproduce my steps.

He also told my how to so and where to put what source package files in
the repository, so I'll try to do so. It may take some time though.

The patch is an attachment to the archives of the openvz users mailing list.

Bug#681089: firmware-linux-nonfree: Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5722 dropped packets

2012-07-10 Thread Berni Elbourn
Package: firmware-linux-nonfree
Version: 0.35~bpo60+1
Severity: normal

With standard squeeze kernel seemingly once a day the nic stops
working. Looking at the switch port it seems the nic is transmitting (or
retransmitting) something as fast as possible. A simple ifdown/ifup
seems to cure for rest of working day.

The latest backport kernel 3.2.20-1~bpo60+1 and
firmware-linux-nonfree_0.35~bpo60+1 the nic does seems to be stable. iperf
reports 1gb performance. However the count of dropped packets is not zero.

I have changed cables and switch ports. There is another other gigabit nic on
the switch. This is a nVidia Corporation MCP77 and this has no errors or
dropped packets.

I also have tried the module 3.122n from Broadcom. The nic stops working after
a few minutes with the switch port showing rapid transmission sympton as per
1st para. Interestingy the 3.122n module does not update the firmware files in
/lib/firmware...

Not a lot :(

Well, I already saw these errors -71. One case was a cable problem.
An other one occurred with skype only, while vlc worked correctly.

So, it would be interesting to know if the (almost) last driver works.
Then, you may try the gspca-2.15.18.tar.gz from my web site:

wget http://moinejf.free.fr/gspca-2.15.18.tar.gz
tar -zxf gspca-2.15.18.tar.gz
cd gspca-2.15.18
make
su
make install
reboot

You may then try cheese. For skype, don't forget to force the
use of the v4l library:

export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so
skype

If the problem is still there, I'd be glad to get some traces.
For that, as root, do:

echo 0x1f > /sys/module/gspca_main/parameters/debug

then, unplug/replug the webcam, do some capture until the problem
occurs, and send us the last kernel messages starting from the webcam
probe.

Thanks.

The camera works again in Cheese, at least some of the time. Other
times, launching Cheese immediately crashes GNOME, which restarts the
X.org server.

However, with Skype 4.0.0.7, it only shows a green square, instead of
the camera's output.

This produces a severely distorted image for a few seconds, then
Cheese crashes; GNOME itself survives.

Meanwhile, Skype 4.0.0.7 shows a black square, instead of the camera's output.

I hope that the above already provides some usable answers.

Bug#681011: Removed package(s) from unstable

2012-07-10 Thread Debian FTP Masters
We believe that the bug you reported is now fixed; the following
package(s) have been removed from unstable:

linux-kbuild-2.6 |3.0.0-2 | source
linux-kbuild-3.0.0 |3.0.0-2 | amd64, armel, armhf, i386, ia64,
kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, s390x, sparc

--- Reason ---
ROM; renamed to linux-tools
--

Note that the package(s) have simply been removed from the tag
database and may (or may not) still be in the pool; this is not a bug.
The package(s) will be physically removed automatically when no suite
references them (and in the case of source, when no binary references
it). Please also remember that the changes have been done on the
master archive and will not propagate to any mirrors (ftp.debian.org
included) until the next dinstall run at the earliest.

Packages are usually not removed from testing by hand. Testing tracks
unstable and will automatically remove packages which were removed
from unstable when removing them from testing causes no dependency
problems. The release team can force a removal from testing if it is
really needed, please contact them if this should be the case.

We try to close Bugs which have been reported against this package
automatically. But please check all old bugs, if they where closed
correctly or should have been re-assign to another package.

Thank you for reporting the bug, which will now be closed. If you
have further comments please address them to 681...@bugs.debian.org.

The full log for this bug can be viewed at http://bugs.debian.org/681011

Hi,

attached is a patch for the build-linux-kbuild.sh referenced from
http://wiki.debian.org/HowToRebuildAnOfficialDebianKernelPackage

It adds support for -rcX kernels by doing version mangling from -rcX to
~rcX as needed by Debian.

Also it would be nice if the build-linux-kbuild.sh would be kept in the
SVN repository and a comment like the following be added to the script:

  # The latest version of this script can be retrived via
  # svn export /build-linux-kbuild.sh

package: linux-kbuild-2.6

hi,

the linux-kbuild-2.6 source package includes portions of code from the
linux-2.6 source package (i.e. everything in ./kbuild/*). this is bad
in terms of security support because it causes more work for the
security team and increases the risk of errors, omissions, and mistakes.

less significant, but also important, is that since the kbuild package
is separated from the linux package, the kbuild packages always lag by
weeks or months after a new kernel release; making it impossible to
build modules for that new kernel.

the recommended course of action is to update the linux-2.6 source
package to also build the kbuild binaries. thanks.

mike

Package: linux-kbuild-2.6
Version: 2.6.24-1
Severity: normal

The linux-kbuild-2.6 package (at least for version 2.6.24-1) is
missing the file debian/lib/python/debian_linux/__init__.py.
Without this file, modifying debian/control (such as for a local
version of the package, as I have done) and running pdebuild gives:

  dpkg-buildpackage: source package is linux-kbuild-2.6
  dpkg-buildpackage: source version is 2.6.24-1~zg1
dpkg-buildpackage: source changed by John Zaitseff

Creating an empty __init__.py file using "touch" fixes this problem,
as far as I can see (I'm not a Python guru---yet!).

It may be that empty files are not correctly handled by whatever
creates the Debian diff, so a file with a newline in it may be
necessary... but I am not at all sure of this.

Yours truly,

John Zaitseff

Bug#571980: [SPAM] Re: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.33-2-amd64: impi oops on intel motherboard

Thanks to both of you. Do you still have access to this hardware? If so,

Yes, it runs 3.2.0-2-amd64, it seems to behave like a champ. At least I
didn't spot an IPMI-related Oops recently (but I don't reboot it that
often).

Xav

Ours are sitting on a shelf, powered off. I can use one to test a
specific kernel if wanted.

Thanks,

Ian

Bug#677016: resume failure: kobject_add_internal failed for BAT0 with -EEXIST

Fair enough. When's the last time it happened? Is the error always
"kobject_add_internal failed for BAT0 with -EEXIST"?

It appeared last time two weeks ago, when I was still using 3.3. Since
then I have been using 3.4, and no problem so far.

There were two errors:
- "kobject_add_internal failed for BAT0 with -EEXIST" and no other message
- the error with the recursivity, the acpi function and so on (the image
I posted).

But probably they are related, since BAT0 (battery 0) is surely to acpi.

I tried searching the web for that message but you seem to be the only
one getting it in this circumstance. :) Alas.

If you can still reproduce it occasionally with some kernel, please
report the symptoms to linux-a...@vger.kernel.org, cc-ing either me or
this bug log so we can track it. Be sure to mention:

  - precise steps to reproduce, expected result, actual result, and
how the difference indicates a bug (should be simple enough)
  - how reproducible it is
  - which kernels you have tested and what happened with each
  - full "dmesg" output from booting an affected kernel, as an
attachment or link
  - acpidump output, as an attachment or link
  - any other weird symptoms or workarounds

Hopefully someone there can suggest a way to figure out what is
happening, for example by applying some patch or enabling some
debugging feature to be ready for when it happens next.

Thanks again for a clear report, and sorry I have no better advice.

No problem for me, I am glad that it works on 3.4! So if you prefer,
you can close this bug.

First, note that I have indeed a problem with the battery, since the
icon of gnome is not working properly: it shows an empty battery,
whice it is fully loaded, or viceversa.

Is this more reproducible than the resume failures?

This is 100% reproducible. For ex., right now I have 2 horizontal lines
instead of 3, and my battery is 87% charged. Moreover, it is charging,
but the icon does not show the "fire" (meaning it is charging).
